hey, all. syrinx here. a few points of interst.

i got antiquities #99 this afternoon, and all i have to say is: wow. great stuff. ONE prob, tho. On _MY_ CD, ACOS comes before DLPM, while on the jacket, it's supposed to be after. Mike - is this a rare error?

If any of you want to get a hold of Echolyn's "Suffocating The Bloom" on CD, i found a place today that will sell it to you. They have about 550 copies of it, for about $22 plus shipping via UPS> I don't remember the name of the company, but the # is (208) 331-0671. If you get a machine, just say your name, what you want, and your phone #. They'll call you back. They did to me.

Other than that, that's just about it. Keep on rockin!

You know, the first time I heard DT I really didn't like it at all. The musicianship really, really impressed me, but I didn't like the songs. My initial reaction was something to the effect of "These guys waste enough riffs to feed a starving metal band for three months!" But I kept listening to the tape in the car (that MojoMan copied for me). I listened to the whole thing because I could never remember where the Metropolis bass solo was. :) And it started to grow on me. After a week or so, I fell in love with Surrounded. Then, I started getting into all the songs. Finally, I had heard Awake a few times, and had a chance to see them live at the Malibu - and I was sold. "Shit, they *can* do it live!" And, now, here I am, posting more than all but 6 of you. :)

OK, one more time. This is the Ytsejam, this is the #ytsejam on IRC. Any questions? :) Connect to port 2112 of server irc.dreamt.org. You can do this with the following IRC command:

We're usually there after about 9:00 pm eastern or so. See ya there!

Well, I can't be an eagle, 'cause I'm always getting shit on. :)

On another note, I'm listening to Satch on Rockline (and he is absolutely tearing! Stu and Jeff whatever-his-name-is, the drummer, are with him. Man, they rock!) and he said that this coming August, he's planning a tour similar to HORDE and Lollapalooza, except focusing on the guitar. He said that he and Bafu's brother Steve will be there, along with "other types" of guitarists, like Adrian Legg, etc. Keep your eyes open for this one!!!

I thought everyone may be interested in John's thoughts on Antiquities, since there has been talk of him recently, because of Antiquities. Here's a message he asked me to pass on to the jam:

Ryan, I'm not a bit offended by any comments about the quality of vocals pertaining to me on antiqities. I haven't even heard it yet but know what to expect. What your actually listening to is a cheezy boom box recording, someone must have stuffed under a chair or something , I thought I made it clear that I didn't want anything recorded because I hadn't sung a note in 2 years and was extremely unprepared, I could make a myriad of excuses but why bother, anyone who thinks it sucks is right on as far as I'm concerned. Like I told Mike Bahr, if anyone finds it entertaining, so be it (get your hearing checked) and if you don't (like me) just consider the source. Thanks, John

I don't have AQ (although I'm starting to think I should get it), but in LiT, on th second chorus, when he says life, it sounds like whenyour mouth overflows w/ saliva, and you have to slurp it back in... I don't know if we're talking about the same part...

Excuse my ignorance, but could somebody explain to me what the whole 'Please Don't Go'/'Mercy Fuck' is about? I never figured it out...

Not familiar with that one, but I have a boot of a show in June of '93 where, during TTT, someone(s) in the band tried to sing harmony vocals to the chorus and they were so bad that James started laughing. Actually, that was a purty crappy show for him, so he may have been laughing at himself, but it was amusing. :)

I guess there are going to be plenty of other people responding to that post about Dream Theater's songwriting, but I thought I'd put my two cents in anyway.

    Here they are:

$0.005 Dream Theater are the best goddamn bunch of songwriters I know. Their lyrics are some of the best poetry I have ever read, and their music kicks serious butt (to quote someone we all know).

$0.005 Operation Mindcrime does rock, but so do Images and Words, A Change of Seasons, When Dream and Day Unite, and Awake.

$0.005 When was self-indulgence outlawed? Are Dream Theater's songs self-indulgent? Hell yeah! And I love every second of them!

$0.005 You guys probably already know this, but La Villa Strangiato by Rush, while unforgivably incorrect Spanish, is sub-titled "An exercise in self-indulgence" so there.

Well, I'd put in another two, but I'm on a very tight budget right now. So long, and thanks for all the fish :)

Even better (well, at least close) --Kansas will be touring with Styx. I'm not sure when the tour starts, but it hits my area (St. Louis, MO) in mid-July.

DTC: When singing along with DT at home or in the car, and you encounter a high note that you can't reach, do you strain your voice and make a fool out of yourself, or do you lower it an octave and still screw it up? I never will sing like James... :)

It seems to me that the last saving grace of the Ytsejam is that it has not degenerated into the same miasma of putrescence that typifies the r.m.a.q. (ie., DT bashing, or in this case QR bashing). Although, there was that incident with Blind Melon, it seems that most of us on the 'jam are above this kind of purile band slamming. I am certain that Ed's intent was not to start some flame war concerning QR, but I must say in advance, that the whole topic bores me to tears. I would hope that we can continue to rise above the kind of "discussion" that folks like "Mindcrimer" partake in. So much for me. Soapbox mode off.

Well, you know, in the rec......qr newsgroup, the BIG flamewar is BANDWARS 96.... (or something).... and it's basically about a 70post thread on how DT (focusing on Petrucci mainly) are technically inferior to some shredders (and accd. to some, even to Queensryche), and musically way inferior to queensryche. That 'kind' of thread has existed way up about a year ago when I joined that newsgroup insinuated by a crosspost basically saying the same thing.... now in that newsgroup, the same 5 or so people from a year ago, are bashing the hell out of DT... and some even crosspost in the dt newsgroup.... in the end, I must say, there's no point in arguing against them, since they don't listen... one relief to me is that not much DT fans go berserk posting 70 posts about how "queensryche sucks and DT roolz"..... The attitude of hardcore QR fans has more or less made me think again about prog-metal fans, though.... >Just wanted to share this with you guys and see if anyone had some >intelligent comments to make about this guys opinion.

After reading the reply from John, I get the vague impression that he's not exactly happy with the guys in DT for recording him. Maybe a bit of dt-bashing going on over there. if what he says is true, that is a bit messed up, but when you go into an audition, you should expect to be recorded for comparison. I've auditioned andhave auditioned before, and it helps to have recoredings of all the auditioning people to compare after the fact, because to go on memory plain sucks. But, John sounds a bit bitter, and can you really blame him?

    Hi!

I just wanted to say, that I'm back. I had a little vacation and didn't get any jams for 2 weeks. It was really disappointing. :)

I saw Mr. JP on Friday the 22nd March. He did a workshop around here. What should I say. He IS god. :) At least he's my god. :) He played one of the songs, that will probably be on the next album and it was GREAT! More the IaW-thing. He had the whole band on tape (!) and played the guitar to it live. I liked the song very much but I failed asking him for the name of the song. Please don't hang me for this. I was so amazed, I couldn't think clearly. :) He also played Erotomania and some other stuff, he recorded for this workshop-tour. It was much slow material with nice guitar themes in it. NO, I didn't record it. NO, I didn't take photos, and YES I would like to shoot myself for not having done it. Maybe, I'll think first next time and then go there.

He told me to say HELLO to all of you. So it's done. :)

Jeff C - I said hello to him from you and he told me to say hello back! :)

Naturally I gave a Superior-CD to him. You never know... :)

He signed a card for me where he stands there with his guitar. Nice picture! NO! I don't sell it. :)

Mr. Damon M. Fibraio - please email me directly! I can't reach you by the address you wrote to the ytsejam. My address: basmer@med-rz.uni-sb.de

The last couple of days have been absolutely great. Friday, I got Sting tickets for Cleveland and Columbus. Saturday, I got my latest MST3K info Club newsletter. Sunday night, I got to see B.B. King in concert in Cleveland. Oh man, I hope I can still wail like that at 35, let alone 70! Finally, I got my AQ and the latest issue of Rolling Stone today. In it, there is an article on my man Vernon Reid: his album is supposed to come out in May. To give you some idea of my joy, imagine if DT's next album is coming out in May, and that's how I felt. Anyway, the reason I'm posting is because of a couple of things in the latest issue (May 1996) of Guitar World. First, it said in the Whammy Bar that "Relativity Records recently dropped its entire roster of rock artists and supporting staff in hopes of positioning itself as a force on the rap music market. Among the artists dropped were Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Gov't Mule (featuring Allman Brothers Band guitarist Warren Haynes), Alligator Gun, and Smackmelon. Reportedly, Satriani has relocated to Epic Records, while many of the other displaced artists are also 'looking for a home in the Sony family,' says Relativity spokeswoman Kerry Cooley. Vai's management politely declined to comment about the guitarist's plans, but confirmed that he is still hard at work on a new album." Comments? Criticism? Subscription info? (just kidding) Speaking of Satriani, do any Michigan 'Jammers know if tickets are still available for the Detroit show? The Cleveland and Columbus shows are sold out, much to my dismay. Second, there was an advertisement from Note Service Music featuring JP's Rock Discipline video. It's $49.95, and shipping is $5.00 for U.S., and $6.00 outside the U.S. Their phone number is 1-800-628-1528, extension 214 or 215. A while back, some 'Jammers had trouble finding it, I hope this helps. Finally, AQ is great. Acoustic Dreams was my favorite Prism Records release, until now. Great collection of songs and packaging. The 2 skulls kind of remind me of Pushead's "Sad But True" skull design for Metallica. Anyway, Mr. Bahr seems to be one of the few artisans who have eliminated the dichotomy that arises between quality and quantity. Besides, anybody in a band named Scoobacca has to be doing something right!

    Sincerely,
