Paul Cashman! Good idea on the MidCon thang....from now on, it will be
referred to as..............."Mytsecon"!!!!!! Maybe a good idea for seeing if
the ba nd or members can make it in late July/early August (the as of 4-26-96
9:15 a.m. approved Mytsecon window) around some sort of clinic they might hold
in Chicago (Guitar Center is in the heart of where we should hold the
event!!). Any way to talk to gear officials about this? SInista? Chew?
    Beuhler? LATER-

Hello! That's very interesting. I think that there is a lot of confusion
on the subject (myself included). Again, after that station played the
tune, the DJ mentioned the tribute thing (I was surprised too when he said
May 8), but never elaborated on the band, etc. I'm beginning to agree w/
what another 'jammer had posted in the last 'jam about it just being a mere
"cover tune" by a band. Again, my opinion was that the tune was alright. I
got a call last night from a friend who played in a Rush tribute band for
some time and we were talking in reference to the tribute and he said that
he was approached to play on it, but turned it down due to the fact that he
felt that he wouldn't be able to do a good enough job (trust me I'm gonna
double-check that story out - laugh. Rule #1, never believe a musician!).

Well, hopefully we will all eventually get the correct info.

Never read any of her stuff, but I saw her being interviewed on TV once.
She was a weird scary hippy woman, with weird scary hippy clothes, and long
black hair which reminded me of Alice Cooper. She spoke funny too.

I think this is an extremely BAD idea. Why?

Well, for starters, DT did us a big favour by recording and releasing the
ACOS EP. It was never expected to be a commercial success, and they did it
    just for us.

They simply cannot afford to release something else "just for us". They
are in desperate need of a commercially successful album, and a double CD
just won't sell well. Sure, it would keep us die-hards happy, but it would
really screw any chance DT have of becoming popular. I think this is a
critical stage in DT's career - they are on the verge of a breakthrough, and
they have a bigger chance than ever before of expanding their fan base.

A double CD would be commercial suicide right now.

    Anyone disagree?

I agree with Andrew Feyder. Double CDs are a little too '70s. It's hard enough
for me to listen to ONE DT disc and catch all the cool things going on. Also,
a double CD will take much longer to produce and then we'd be waiting even
longer for another release....finally, the cost would keep potential DT
converts form purchasing. Just a few thoughts. LATER-

Hey, I'm not crying TO you, I'm crying NEAR you!

Seriously, there were a lot of people that came from a long way (I had a 3
hr drive myself) to get there. Yes I got to see a great band in a less than
stellar performance (mostly because of the club and the limited set length).
The fact of the matter was that doors were supposed to open at a certain
time and they did not. Had the club management kept us a little more
informed, we probably wouldn't have had to wait outside so long, we'd have
joined you in that nice warm bar.

And something I'd like to get off my chest: While standing in line, There
were several times I had the thought "No band is worth this". I know,
    blasphemy, but hey - I was cold. I wasn't thinking straight. I didn't leave,
so obviously SOME band is worth that. :)

    >A DT DOUBLE CD!"

I don't think I want that. No offense, but what I like about DT is the way
their studio stuff is so cohesive, both as individual songs, and over an
entire album. I would rather have the set released as two seperate discs (a
la Use Your Illusion - but with better songs :)). Plus you have the fact
that no record company is going to try to market a $30-$35 studio set for an
    "unproven" artist.

Plus, how do you think all those people who thought DT was "self-indulgent"
for ACOS will react to a double studio album? :)

    Hi All ....

Me again. As for the petition, someone suggested to hold off and not do it. I have to disagree. John said that they had 20 songs written and were gonna trim them down to 70 mins. Do you really want to have to pay $25 to Mike Bahr for the rest of the songs?? ;) (Kidding, Mike) I would like to see them put everything they have on discs so we can enjoy it.

We have 66 people so far in 12 hours. :)

    > Although I'm sure you have the best intentions, I'm not sure how >good the idea of sending a petition to DT to get them to record a double >CD is. I think they might consider it badgering.

Yes, I agree with this; I don't think it's a big deal that they record extra stuff and then whittle it down to 70 minutes; this way all the quality stuff gets released. So we miss the mediocre stuff; what's wrong with that? And chances are, we'll hear some of that live through boots and released live material, like Bombay Vindaloo.

The other thing to consider is that by having extra material, that is potentially _less_ work for them to do for the album after this one; I personally would hate for the next album to be delayed because they spent extra time in the studio; I would much prefer the next album to be released sooner, and then have a shorter time period before the album after that.

ACOS was something worth getting worked up about; it was a song that had tremendous implications for establishing DT as a great progressive- metal band, and I think our effort was well spent in getting them to record it. But asking them to do twice the work now just so we can satisfy our insatiable hunger for DT seems kind of greedy and petty to me. And remember that a double CD is going to cost twice as much, keeping many potential new fans from hearing them since they have to risk twice as much on a band they might not know much about.

    Just my opinion.

John Petrucci specifically said to mail the record company about this. He said that they have 20 songs or so. someone else in the audience said, "Are you going to be doing a double disc set?". John replied with,"Write our record label about a double disc set and maybe they will support a double cd." John also said that they are writing Metropolis Pt. II and it should be on the new album. So I don't really think that the band is going to get upset because we wrote the label. Its not like were bugging the band. We are just fans writing the label to see if we can get the label to financially back a double set. It could be a possibility. This all came from John Petrucci's mouth. I'm sure other people that were at the clinic can back me on this. ------------------------------------- Name: Barker E-mail: rbarker@epix.net Date: 4/26/96 Time: 12:42:52 PM -------------------------------------

Hold on sir, first of all this song is definitely NOT in F sharp, but in F#. And your intro seem to be a little wrong you see, 'cause you really have missed out a few # and a couple of notes. Try cleaning your ears, that'll maybe help.

Well sir, this part is NOT hard to play unless you are a complete piece of shit. So may I come with a suggestion? LISTEN and UNDERSTAND their music before you come along and present your wrong material. I've played the extended version of "Learning To Live" for almost two years now, so I now that, and about every other Dream Theater song very, very well. If someone needs help with solos or tough parts, just mail me and I'll reply ASAP. I really get pissed off by jerks who think they've been clever, but who really STINKS! Eat shit, pal.

OK, Lately, *we* have been talking about our views of WDADU being influenced by DT's later stuff.......I *Love* WDADU, so *obviously*, I've been able to get past that roadblock ;-) btw, I think I&W>WDADU>Awake

Ok, so let me turn this around: What do you think about a band releasing a *GREAT* album, and then having everything that follows judged by that standard? I am of the belief that I like Awake the least of the LPs, because it followed my co-#1 all time favorite album (I&W tied w/ U2 Joshua tree) Also happens to me with the Scorpions...fave: Lovedrive vs. least fave: Animal Magnetism (the follow-up)

I guess it's like the aftermath of a LONG relationship....no matter how it ends, any future potential GFs will be judged against the good in the -ex (No, I'm not bitter........)

So what's my point? Am I forever going to judge DT based on the I&W? Am i not going to like future albums because they don't match up to that gem?

I'm rambling and babbling, sorry, exams, lack of sleep etc........ partha
