Seriously, I really loved those jokes !!! Jon, You rule ! That one about God being an engineer was my favourite.
BTW, can someone call *me* an asshole on the jam ? I feel so left out... No one ever flames me... :( well, except Scott Cook a while back... But that one wasn't so bad... (Hi Scott, you too rule...)

MISSING CONCEPT ALBUMS:
Marillion -- Misplaced Childhood Marillion -- Clutching At Straws Marillion -- Brave Marillion -- Afraid Of Sunlight (somewhat)
(I typed this before reading Jam #1498... But it never hurts to give Marillion that little extra bit of exposure they need so badly... Especially in the US)

If the amount of people signing is the problem... I could ask those guys on the Marillion list to sign it... There probably are some DT fans over there too. Everyone with a DT-homepage could put a link to the petition on it. We could spread the rumour through several prog-rock sites etc. Send the info to the DT-newsgroup... We could even post an article on the QUEENSRYCHE NEWSGROUP !!! (wouldn't that be fun) ;-)

Tomorrow it'll be 'Koninginnedag' in Holland (30th) ! That's when we celebrate our Queen's birthday... despite of the fact that she was born in Januari !!! (it was actually her mother's real birthday, our previous queen...). NDTC, just a fun fact... + a day off from work !!!

I think I'm going to unsubscribe due to a severe lack of flames in the last one or two Ytsejams... It's just no fun anymore... What's next ? DTC ?!? Gheezz...

It is a dark time for the rebellion...
I recently opened a copy of Entertainment Weekly to find that Rage Against the Machine's new album is number one this week. They also recieved good reviews from the critics, who defined their music as containing "angst" and "raw power." Is it just me, or does this suddenly defy everything the band stands for? Just a few months ago I felt like I was the only person who knew that the band existed. Also, Marilyn Manson is promoting their new album on MTV as the "kings of hard-core." It's a shame to see the bands I thought were truly talented and had a good cult following suddenly become another part of the 'alternative' bandwagon. I still enjoy their music, of course. But being a part of their fan base doesn't mean as much anymore. The reason I'm saying this is because during the past few months on the Jam, I have observed many elaborate schemes to get Dream Theater more exposure. Over the years, Dream Theater has managed to maintain a considerable following without becoming too popular. When their new album comes out in October, DT will find themselves in a sea of promotion, and they just might have a hit single on their hands. If that happens, and I do stress IF, we will suddenly have a TON of newbies on the Jam, each one more annoying than the last. The fact of a DT fan mailing list might lose its luster. Consider it "post-success depression." So..... savor every moment of pop-culture-free bandwidth, for it is Only a Matter of Time. (had to be said)
All of this, of course is IMHO.

Ordinarily I'd say this is blasphemy, but I just got this Ronnie Scott's gig and think there might be something to it, but only on this one. I've heard audience boots from the LatM and LiT and he sounds great. He doesn't sound so good on this London cover gig. He leaves out improvs that we hear on ACOS and pinches on several high notes which doens't happen on the CD. Anyone got any inside info? As a vocalist myself this would kinda be a setback as James' is probably my favorite singer. :(

My theory on this matter is that if they did re-record some of the stuff they didn't do enough (on LiT, LatM, etc). The cover tunes on ACOS I would have to agree sound a little too good for James, but Live at the Marquee and Images and Words: Live in Tokyo definitely have mistakes by James left on them. Before I saw DT live, LiT and LatM were the only live material I'd heard by the band and I was *very* aware of the fact that Mr. LaBrie is first and foremost a _studio_ musician. He's got a great voice, he knows how to use it well, but sometimes he just doesn't get a note quite right in a live setting. I think that some of the boots just caught him on a little worse of a night than did LatM and LiT, but there are spots on Live in Tokyo especially where I cringe a bit at the vocal delivery.

While I agree with you that QR doesn't improvise much in a live setting, I think you are being a little bit harsh on them for it. First off, look at the video and theatre spectacle that they put on *while* performing said music 'note-by-note'. You can't just decide to extend a guitar solo if you're playing along with a pre-recorded videotape. I give them great credit for being able to pull off the synchronization of the music with the video, while still performing the tunes 'note-for-note'. I also think that Queensryche has a different focus to their music than Dream Theater does. Dream Theater loves complex solos and all the little intricacies that they add to their music... Queensryche tends to go at it more from a 'composing' standpoint rather than a 'jamming' standpoint. They seem to have specific goals for their songs, and if the song fulfills that purpose then there is no need for an extended solo to show off Michael or Chris's guitar skills. They write good stuff, so I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that if they *wanted* to change the songs they are capable of doing so, but that they choose to leave the song the way it was originally intended.

Thank you for expressing this sentiment. Most of us will agree that some sort of background in music (degree, experience, etc) is beneficial, but just like has been said time and time before: it's no guarantee. I took piano lessons for somewhere in the neighborhood of 12 years... does that suddenly make my musical opinions/beliefs better than the average schmuck with no background whatsoever? I don't think so... Music is art... art is subjective... anytime you go waving your credentials around to try to impress someone to your point of view, all you are doing is saying, 'Hey, my _opinion_ is better than your _opinion_' ... which may or may not be true.

Here are some thoughts that have been on my mind lately... maybe one of them will stimulate some interesting conversation.
1) I realized that Rush is a good way to introduce people to prog rock... at least that's how I got introduced. First, I heard Roll the Bones... I liked it but I didn't go crazy over it. Then I got Presto; I liked it more than RtB, but it still didn't do it for me. THEN I got Counterparts... I loved it. I figure i liked it so much because I wasn't really expecting anything. But the point is that Counterparts prompted me to get Chronicles which introduced me to all the 'eras' of Rush's music. And ended up liking the progressive era the most... so I immediately tried to get a hold of 2112, FtK, Hemispheres, etc... After I got Rush overload, I needed to hear more prog, and I started to listen to I&W again. ( I already liked it, but this time I REALLY liked it). And as luck would have it, a couple weeks later, as telling my friend "Jeez I can't wait for the next album"... And my friend that it already had and he had seen an ad in a 'zine. Needless to say I immediately bought Awake. Oddly enough, the exact same thing happened w/ ACOS... same friend and everything... spooky, huh?
2) Am I the only one on this list that feels annoyed when people label us as the 'Genaration X'? (I figured this topic could go on here since the whole grunge thing is related to it... and since most of us don't particularly love grunge..). Supposively, we don't know what we want out of life, but I personally know what *I* want and what *I* want to do w/ my life ( Anthem's still in my mind, eh Scotch?:) ) So I feel rather insulted when they try to lump me in this huge generalization.
3) I've realized lately that when I'm thinking about getting into a serious relationship w/ a member of the opposite sex, I take a lot of consideration as to what her views on music are. Notice I didn't say 'taste'. I just figure that since music is such an important part of my life, my partner should at least see more in music than just a form of entertainment that you get in the background when you go to disco's... Am I nuts, or are there other musicians that feel this way?
just a thought...

I first heard Alanis on the radio with that "going down on you in a theater" song. I was immediately hooked - not because of her, but because of that bass line, which I guessed correctly was played by Flea. Since the new RHCP hadn't come out yet, and I was wearing BSSM out, I turned this song up everytime it came on the radio. And, you know, eventually Alanis' voice grew on me. Then more singles started coming out, and I gave 'em a listen hoping to hear more Flea. Well, there isn't any more Flea on the album, I found out, but by then I had grown accustomed to her voice. I really like the harmonies in that "Isn't it ironic" song.
The same kind of thing happened to me with the Presidents. Had I known the first time I heard "She's Lump" that the bass player only uses two strings, I probably would have written them off. But I heard the song and liked it. Then I heard that they only string their instruments halfway, and it was like, "Oh, cool."
Before you go jumping down my throat, did anyone ever say to themselves that people with AIDS can't or shouldn't play pro sports? Then what happened after Magic came out? It didn't matter, because we already knew he was Magic. Well, it's the same thing with me and these bands. I didn't know that Alanis was a babe, or that the Presidents don't string up their instruments, because I blissfully lack eMpTyV. All I know is that I like the way that stuff sounds. I don't know if they smoke crack or boil each other's brains, and I don't particularly care. They write stuff that I can tap my foot to and sing along with.
You should try this for yourselves. Try to not watch MTV for about three months, and just listen to the radio. You'll discover that there's a whole bunch of "alternacrap" out there that's really good. You'll get to listen to it without your opinions being tainted by "Oh, they're an MTV band" or whatever. I mean, Seven Mary Three, Everclear, Spacehog - there's some good sounding stuff out there. Just stop watching and listen. You'll surprise yourself.
