    Dude,

I don't know about you, but about the only way I'd want to have to transcribe Portnoy's stuff (If I even COULD do all of it) is if somebody were paying me by the hour (Then I'd have job security for at least the next ten years or so!)

    > Actually, many people believe that >Rage for Order is a concept album as well. Check out the lyrics on RFO, and >think about it. Lots of computer stuff, artificial intelligence, and of >course the love songs and a broken relationship (walk in the shadows, >london, etc..)

Walk in the Shadows and London are about vampires, and one of the band members was quoted as saying the inspiration came from Ann Rice novels. I don't think of RFO as a concept album, but as an album with many recurring themes. Unless if it is some big story about Vampires who don't love their wives anymore and are stalking someone else, who have murdered someone, but are trapped by their domineering computers, while making soldiers heartless, who have rebellious attitudes and are all spys. Hmmmm. It's possible, I guess.

    >Yeah, Promised land is like a start to finish, "I've been >awakened" CD. >Starts off with "I Am I," someone thinking he has his shit together, and >then, at the end of the CD, "Someone Else" lets him know that he is now not >what he thought he was. Excellent CD

Promised Land is my favorite cd of all DT and QR stuff, even though I prefer DT. Many people think it is in fact Mindcrime, part 2. I, for the record, agree.

In Jam 1499, Ed brought up the possibility that DT re-records live stuff ala Kiss before releasing it. Well, I have no idea, but I'd like to propose a theory. You mentioned how good James sounds on albums and on LiT and LatM, but he sometimes sounds like shit on boots. I thought about that a minute, and came up with

The Digital Dream Theater Performance Theory: The more rest James' voice has had, the better it will sound.

This of course leads to a corollary: The better John M plays, the less likely any of us are to hear it.

Yet I digress. The reason that I came up with this theory is the Christmas shows (or Hanukah shows, or Kwanzaa shows, or Late December shows, depending on your outlook). James, IMO, was in top form. I figured it was because he hadn't been singing every night for a month, and the chords had a time to rest. I would gather that most widely available boots aren't from the first couple shows of a tour. We could check boots and LiT and LatM against the tour lists to see if this holds.

    Seth,

I couldn't agree with you more (Moore!) about Derek seeming to fit in really well with the guys. When I saw Mike Portnoy do his drum clinic in Memphis (a dream come true--I got my picture taken with him, autographs, AND caught one of his drumsticks, and I'm a drummer), he said that Derek was fitting in great, and that he has the attitude now (I think "balls" was the actual word he used) that Kevin had when he was really into the band and music. He also said that they were all really clicking together in the writing for the new album (Are they finished recording yet?).

To all of you 'jammers, please read this and pick up the phone to call some of these radio stations even if you don't live anywhere close to where they're based. The Galactic Cowboys are a great band and it's important that we support them and Metal Blade Records. We oughta bug the hell out of them until they finally give in and give the GC's some well-deserved airplay!

The reason for this message is to ask you all for help getting the Galactic Cowboys' new album "Machine Fish" played on the radio. I'm so tired of hearing the same excuses from the programmers: the band is too small, the label is too small...when did it stop being asbout music? If they played them the band wouldn't be small anymore!!! In short, here's a few stations that are being worked on at the moment where we actually stand half a chance. Please help if you can!!!

(Note: I didn't really think this part true, I'm just trying to get into Digest 1500 :-)

Posted yesterday about why PMU was a hit--suicide message struck a chord in the lives of the messed up,..... Why didn't those same people take to TTT and AD? Well, in TTT, it starts out saying that "Need a new way...." which they like, but then goes on to a message of self-reliance (You'll find all you need in your mind....) WHich they hate....this MTV generation, as much as I am a part of it, and hate to say it, sometimes keeps looking for ways to get around doing things for themselves.....(I think that's going to get me in trouble, but oh well....)

ANd then, of course, in AD, their worst fears came true....DT was against suicide, and so could no longer be counted among the death-obsessed angst bands....

SO that's why TTT and AD didn't do as well commercially as did PMU

I used to. When I got I&W and listened to it, I'd take out AD, Surrounded, and WfS. It wasn't really because I didn't like them, but they had a tendancy to break up the "heavy" aspect of the CD. With Awake, I'd take out IF (A.K.A "The Death of Aaron Spelling" :) , TSM, (Ben) LSoaD, and SDV, and just keep the heavier stuff. Of course now I have some to realize that, heavy or not, most of those songs kick ass. I love that geetar in LSoad, and SDV is becoming one of my favorites (going through a tough relationship, SDV on repeat, 'nuff said). TSM is a perfect compliment to the rest of AMBI. AD is ok, not my favorite, but I still listen to it. Surrounded has some very cool parts to it (light ta dark dark ta light light ta dark Dr. Light, right Bafu? :) And WFS is just a cool song. Of course, I still skip IF, even with that ending. :)

    10. There's more to life than the Ytsejam...I know this surprises some of you...

    9. SOME people get mail other than the Jam.....DUH!

    5. Watching men argue about who's the biggest asshole is just too fun.

    4. Boys suck.

    3. After my famous post that only I had the balls to come up with I had to make sure I'm not a man trapped in a woman's body.

I have only seen Queensryche during the Road to Promised Land Tour and I thought it was an excellent concert. Although I agree with your statement that they play the same material live in concert, I think that they do it to attract merely-interested concert goers to purchase their CDs. In other words, they play the same material so people who aren't really familiar with their songs can go out to their local music store and pick up the exact songs they liked in concert. However much one may think they lack improvisationally during their concerts, you have to admit that they definitely make up for this with their visual presentation. IMHO, only Pink Floyd has put on a more visually stunning concert. Where DT stuns the concert-goer with its musical improvisation, QR stuns the crowd with awe-striking special effects. Both are masters at their forte.

Well, welcome to the 1500's. If I remember my history correctly (which I doubt), the 1500's saw the advent of the Renaissance, a time of great creativity and flourishing culture-- "rebirth", literally-- following the era of brutality and ignorance known as the the Dark Ages. Hint, hint.

    Only 612 more to go...

"Well there's egg and bacon; egg, sausage and bacon; egg and spam; bacon and spam; egg, bacon, sausage and spam; spam, bacon, sausage and spam; spam, egg, spam, spam, bacon and spam; spam, spam, spam, egg and spam; spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, baked beans, spam, spam, spam and spam; or lobster thermidor aux crevettes with a mornay sauce garnished with truffle pate', brandy and a fried egg on top of spam." -- the new Ytsejam motto

Oh, aboslutely it can't hurt, no question about that. Having not really been a part of the ACOS petition (I was there in spirit), I am amazed that it worked that time. Even if everyone on the Jam signs the petition, I'm not sure that ~1,200+ units is a worthwhile goal for the record company. For an EP, maybe, but not for a double disc. :)

04/29/96 - A good day to be alive, no? Ok, here we go: 1. Being A Musician Does Not Make You an Authority To no one in specific, I have seen the opinions of some people qualified by his/her standing in the music business. I don't mean to get personal, but so what if someone toured internationally? So what if their record was number one in Timbuktu? Tim Lodge mentioned the New Kids on the Block. Would we value their opinions any more than our own? And if the answer is yes, I believe we should look in the mirror and decide once and for all WHY we value a celebrity's opinion more than the common man's in this county. (EOS) End of sermon. 2. Shopping at Best Buy I went to Best Buy yesterday, and picked up a few new things. Deep Purple's new one, featuring a certain Steve Morse on guitar. If you like him, get this. If you like recent Purple, get this. If you love Ritchie Blackmore, and can't conceive of DP without him, save your cash. I also bought Triumph - Live King Biscuit Flower Hour. It seems that they are mastering and cleaning up the tapes from the 70's and 80's and releasing official, commercial-free concert discs. This one is circa 1981. In related news, the liner notes report that Mike Levine has secured the copyrights for Triumph's back catalog, and he will remaster and re-release the catalog on his own label. Also, they are to resume touring. I don't know whether or not this includes Rik Emmett. The third item I bought was Slayer - Serenity in Murder. Beware of appearances! The cd case has the "2CD" mark on it, ie: Satriani's set, that is in a single case fold-out array. However, there is only one disc inside. In the empty tray there is a cardboard cut-out imploring me to purchase cd-2 of the set when it is released. (It has been - this is an import) Silly me. 3. Damon and his Text Reader I used to sit at work in front of this guy a who had one of these. He used to hate .sig files/ASCII art because all he would get is "dash, dash, dash, dash" over and over. I sympathize, man. 4. Hockey Night in the USA I also sympathize with the guy who was bemoaning the fact that all of the Canadian teams are out of the playoffs. At least you all have CBC and FOX, home of the stupid glowing puck. Morons. 5. Styx/Kansas I am lucky because I live within walking distance of Merriweather Post Pavillion here in MD. I recommend that you MD list members (CALLING UMBC, HELLO??) at least purchase the 15 dollar lawn seats. 6. Alanis Morrisette I had the misfortune of having to listen to this in my wife's car yesterday, coming back from the Caps game. (Or, should I say, Pens game) I asked her why she bought this slab 'o mierda, and she said two reasons: a. It was free from the record club and b. She could actually sing better than AM, so it was an ego booster. I honestly can't understand the appeal here. Does anyone actually like her out there? If so, please explain. 7. End of Jam I have a theory. First of all, if you receive the digest one-by-one you can get a feel for how much space has been taken up. If you know the digest is generated ever 25,000 or so bytes, it's pretty easy to time it. Also, if you write a long enough post, you are almost guaranteed. We'll see. No calculations have been made, because I get the digest. 8. Good bye! Feel free to flame. 9. Hungarian is the Devil's tongue. If you don't believe me try learning it. (No offense - it's just very complicated!) -- Kevin (kwmadden@usa.pipeline.com) GO WINGS!!! "I got the Blues this morning..." - King's X or was it the Red Wings last night when they beat the Jets?
