Hi.. well i seem to be pretty much the same as Mr pat Griffin .. the
First DT cd i Heard was Awake ..back when it was released and back then
i was listening to stuff like Sepultura etc..so i obviously didnt like
it.. about a Year ago a friend of mine lent me I&W,and maybe because my
musical tastes had changed well i just loved it..at least
    PMU,TTT,Metropolis (my fave,right off the bat),UAGM...but i skipped
Surrounded ..another day and WFS,and LtL..then after some time ..i
started listening to all of the Cd exept Surrounded..then in Oct i
bought ACOS (oct nov..dont remember) and Then my favorite song changed
from Metropolis to ACOS .. then i bought awake and I loved it ... exept
IF.. :) so right now i like every DT song (on their comercial releases)
exept IF and Status Seeker.. :) Surrounded in LAtm Kicks ass..i think
Kevin Shouldve used piano effect instead of what he used on I&W (IMHO)
    well thats all folx.!

There have been a lot of offerings in the jam lately regarding Queensryches "Promised Land" album, and whether or not it's a "concept album".

Well, I bought the QR PL CD-ROM game a few weeks ago, and along with it comes a CD containing almost 100 minutes of the BAND MEMBERS explaining what it's about. I just thought I'd share some little peices of the interviews with you who care, so that you have a better idea where Promised Land is coming from. Believe it or not, PL is not really a "concept album", and is not related to Mindcrime whatsoever.

Most of this is based on their actual words, not my opinions. The quotes aren't exact, but very very close.

CHRIS DeGARMO - "We wanted to do something completely different this time, right down to the environment we'd record in. We thought the people who like the little head-space places we go to would find this interesting. The vibe of this album is sort of like stepping into a dark room, whereas on Empire there was still a bulb flickering somewhere. On this one we stepped in with all the lights off."

GEOFF TATE - " "Damaged" is basically me looking back through my life, who I am, and where I come from, and what made me who I am now...."

GEOFF TATE - "The song Promised Land for me is about coming to point in your life where you find out that this "brass ring" that you've made your goal is not all it's cracked up to be once you achieve it. Realizing that there are things in life that are much more important than just what you do for a job."

SCOTT ROCKENFIELD - "I wrote "Disconnected" as a peice, which ended up a bit different as a Queensryche song. Geoff could see the direction and feel I was aiming for with this one......."

GEOFF TATE - " (regarding Disconnected) I started to think about nature a lot, and how perfect it is in harmony, and how we as humans just sort of step in with disregard and being out of touch with it........"

I could go on, but you get the idea. Most of the songs are very personal to the band and their feelings about life. It's not like the older stuff where you'd pop it in and let it rip your head off or something. They concentrated on writing what they felt rather than "jamming". I have to admit, when I first heard it I didn't like it because it was so different from everything that they had done before, but now that I've gotten past that and actually gotten into the feel and lyrics I love it! If you're looking for a rock & roll album, brother, this aint it...it has a down feel to it, and exlplores some of the "not so happy" things in life...on the other hand, if you're interested in seeing the band members' personal perspective on life, and what their years of experience have left them feeling, check it out :)

    Peace, Buster

    >I am not making excuses for James on the nights he doesn't sing well, >because he needs no excuse. Expectations are difficult to meet, especially >for a following such as the one DT has built. But I guess I like to believe >that by virtue of the kind of fan I have typically seen the band attract, it >would be natural for them to say, "Hey, James had an off night, oh well." >Does it really comment on his entire live performance catalogue? The answer >is easy, no.

When I brought up this discussion it was not meant in the least as a put down of James' vocals. I frequently find myself defending him when the less-than-musically-inclined of my friends lay into him for cracks etc. I was simply concerned that my (apparent) illusion of DT being a more "pure" (for lack of a better word) live band was being shattered. I've heard many boots of DT and own several so I know that he has on and off nights and recognize the difficulty in being consistent every night in this extremely demanding genre. However, I'm quite against redoing any part of a supposedly "live" show to impress the consumer. After hearing the Ronnie Scott's "real" version, it's evident that not only James' parts, but guitar and drum work were also redone. If it's labeled a "live" album I'd like a purely live set. Call me anal, call me (as I prefer) a purist, but if it's redone in the studio it ain't live. Adam Pye - alpine@negia.net - http://www.negia.net/~alpine - IZZC #1426 - Ask for the bootlist!

Hey, I just heard my resurrection:) besides being a cool song, it also has a sample which let me make a unique and DT-related sig (see below) :)

Besides that, Instrumental is an awe-inspiring shred-fest... Especially in my resurrection when Kev and JP trade licks... damn those guys are fast.

Doesn't JP look like Ric Ocasek(that's the guy from the Carr's right?) in the pic? He's so skinny there...

I didn't see Jethro Tull's 'Aqualung' mentioned in the concept album thread... or maybe the guy who started it mentioned it, but I'm too lazy to check so oh well... I saw IM's Seventh Son mentioned as a concept album... is there a story involved?

Anybody know a way of typing out Ernie's laugh? Not me, the Sesame Street guy:)

Been lurking for a long time and thought it was darn near time to say something. I just bought LiT and it is great. Does anyone else think that Myung looks as if he is holding his breath during the entire concert. Breath!!! Now I don't mean this to sound like I'm ripping on Mr. Myung because he is an incredible bassist, but maybe he should take a breath or two every once in a while. Maybe he is some kind of supernatural being and doesn't have to breath. That would explain his super human playing. Hmmmm.

Hey does anyone know of a way that I can make lots o' money fast? Maybe selling magazine subscriptions or something.

Recently people have been asking whether on the boots James does not sing as well as on the official releases. Well quite honestly probably not. When Iron Maiden recorded Live after death it was recorded over something like 9 nights. After they recorded everything, they picked and chose the best versions of the songs. When doing a legitimate recording you have that liberty. I know Rush recorded La Villa Strangiato in one shot as a band but it also took them like 40 takes to get it correct, hence its brilliance. I don't believe that DT jams too much live, more than QR maybe, but not as much as many other bands. The style of music does not allow it as readily as say blues or jazz. Hell if Rush does something that is not on the album, live, then they screwed up. Some people just feel that the stuff that they put down on tape is the best it can get, so live with it.

P.S. Hey D-Man, did you notice that Kevin Moore lives on Harvard avenue? Pretty weird correlation between me and you eh????

I'm going to be physically ill. I just watched Kennedy interview Everclear on MTV. First, however, they cut in with the new Cranberries video. I like the Cranberries in their earlier stuff, but this video was vomitous. Began with the generic three chord opening riff that starts most "alternative" songs (it's either the generi-riff or the generi-arpeggio if it's a slow song these days) and then moved into a generic 4/4 beat with the generic 3 line verse followed by the repetitive chorus followed by another 3 lines of infinite wisdom and a couple more chorus'. But I digress (badly). Kennedy was talking to Everclear and found out that they're such amazing guys because they actually come out after the show and sign autographs to their millions of fawning fans. Kennedy, in yet _another_ comment of infinite wisdom, turned to the camera and fawned, "Now what bands do that these days? Gee." This brings on another point about the wonderfullness of DT. They could really be considered somewhat of rolemodels. You don't see 'em starting fights with other bands (Oasis), breaking up bars (Oasis), blowing their own heads off (Cobain), or killing/raping/maiming/gun toting (seemingly 90% of rappers out there). Plus they'll go to dinner with fans (Sherinian), talk to fans at length (all of them 'cept Myung, who is mute), sign multiple autographs apparently 'till they pass out (JP and MP I've been told) PLUS they're far superior musicians to anything on MTV today (or maybe ever).

Alright, down off the soap box. :) Take care...

i saw them on their last tour, and i thought they were incredible. i find it much more impressive when a band can recreate, note for note, the perfect, controlled music they recorded in the studio. QR doing this, IMHO, is impressive. in the studio, you can re-record. you can do multiple takes. on stage, you've only got one shot. it's cool that DT jams, i'm not trying to take away from that, but i think IMO you're way off base by knocking QR for their live playing ability. how can you possibly think that someone sucks because they play their music note for note? would you rather hear the guitarist(s) screw up?

    Hi jammers,

I recently saw some post on the jam about the way James sings, his live performance, etc... I would like to express my feelings about that, and give you the point of view of a great heavy metal singer (not me!).

If some of you know the brazilian band Angra, they must admit that their singer, Andre Matos is what we can call a very impressive singer, with a wide range of vocals. Just give a listen to their cover of Kate Bush "Wuthering heights" on their first album "Angels cry", and you will understand what I mean (even if their new album, "Holy land", is far better and a pure masterpiece!!). I had the luck to spend some times with Andre during their acoustic tour in France last week and we talked a lot. He is a huge Dream Theater fan. Once we talked about singers and I was congratuling him about his singing, how impressive it was, blah blah blah. And then we spoke about vocal technique and he said to me "I don't have half of the technique of James La Brie. He is undoubtely one of the best rock singer, if not the best. He is absolutely unbelievable". And this opinion is reliable, insofar as Andre has a long classical training behind him and he knows perfectly what technique means. If you are not a singer, you are not able to judge some aspects of the singing of a guy, because some things can seem easy while it is very hard to do. That is for the technical aspect...

I have seen DT many many times (I am in charge of their French fan club), on all the tours (I&W, Awake, ACOS). And I have never been disappointed by James singing. Yeah, of course sometimes he sang not as well as he is able to do it. But we all have some good days and some bad days, and some times you are ill. And even in the bad days, I think he is not bad. What amazed me the most is his capacity to change the vocal lines when he knows that he can't reach some notes (he sometimes did it on "Voices"), and to me that means he is a great singer. Unfortunately he wasn't at his best during the Awake tour, but I came to see them for the first time on the ACOS tour in Europe (June 95), and before the show he told me "I feel good and you can be sure that tonight you will hear some good vocals". And Damn God it was! After the first track, UAGM, my friends and I looked at each other: unbelievable. No need to speak to understand that we all thought that we have never seen such a good singer! And the rest of the tour was as good as this show. That was just to write what I think...
