Yes, that's right. A bunch of us on #ytsejam IRC are also using Vocaltec's
Internet Phone to actually speak with each other. Some of us have even
hooked up our guitars and/or keyboards and played "Name That Tune" via
I-Phone. And if you got a CD playing in your CD-ROM drive, the person on
the other end of I-Phone hears the CD.

I've been following the talk about sending mix tapes around to introduce
each other to the more obscure prog-rock/metal. It's a great idea, but I
came across an even better one. :) You don't have to spend time and money
making dubs and mailing them around. Granted, the sound quality isn't gonna
be all that great, but hey, it's virtually free! So get hooked up with
Vocaltec's Internet Phone and audition some CDs over on irc.dreamt.org:2112!

You can get Internet Phone at: http://www.vocaltec.com

Note: There are various internet phone programs around. There isn't a
universal standard, so two people have to have the same program by the same
company to be able to talk. Everyone on #ytsejam seems to like Vocaltec's
    program the best.

guitarist has crazy chops, but he doesn't have as many solo opportunities
    as JP does:(

I got what the knocking means on track 20 after the first 3 minutes on my
first listen. I'll explain it by email if interested.

I also highly recommend Dead Winter Dead. It was good from the first
listen. Same with SG. I was somewhat surprised since lots of prog takes a
few listens to get into. It is especially good if on the first listen you
sit down and read the liner notes and synopsis as you listen. It is quite
    heart-wrenching as advertised.

I just love how Savatage is breaking down the walls of music. The madrigal
round harmony things make me giddy every time, and I've never heard it done
before. Also, having the piano in so many songs that are otherwise very
heavy give the music a whole different feel. I love it.

My brother, who I recently converted, mentioned that this style should be
called "regressive" instead of "progressive" because the last time popular
music had any musical value was when motzart, beethoven, and tchikows
chicovs tchikovski that other guy were around. I'm especially proud of
my brother's conversion because he was nothing but classical and stuff
until he saw the light that is...Dream Theater. (sniff)

            Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!!!

What I would *really* like to see is a four-member jam (minus
Labrie) on MTV's Unplugged. That would be something. I love Labrie, but i
    f
he was there, they would play all the acoustic songs (ie. another day,
LSOAD, etc.) and the public wouldn't get a feel for what DT *really* is.

They could just jam or write some new stuff or do instrumental
medleys. Whoever has heard "Long Island Expressway" off Acoustic Dreams
knows what I'm talkin' about. That stuff rocks!

....And then...finish it off with "The YtseJam...acoustic". That
    *would* be something!!!!!

Yeah, I'd also like to see the guys go instrumental now that
someone mentioned it. It woule be pretty cool if they wrote songs
(including lyrics) for us all to sing to. Kind of like a Karaoke DT ;).
Thanks to the guys who mentioned it. IF they HAD to get a replacement,
though, I'd like to see Dickinson sing. LaBrie is certainly the best
    for the job with DT.
To the dude who asked about the U2 song at the end of Subcon.,
it's "Bad," from The Unforgettable Fire. This song is largely regarded
as one of U2's best (their Live Aid performance being arguably the best
performance of the song. I agree). I like it for its simple beauty.

    Message-ID: <199608050648.AA04654Icrl3.crl.com>

A few days ago we were talking on IRC/Dytsejam and Pam Wheaton (our
own Rockin' Cabbie) mentioned that she'd like me to plant a US flag at
the site of the Centennial Park bombing. There are a few spots near
the bomb site where people have created ad-hoc shrines, with flags and
notes, etc., to remember the victims -- I had been down there
earlier in the evening, as I live in Atlanta, and had seen the
    OUYOYOU\\\\

Anyway, I thought it was a great idea and everyone else on the DT
channel did too, so I figured I'd just plant a flag there for all of
us. Last night (Sun.) I finally got my chance, and at 9:12 p.m. I
pushed a medium-sized American flag into the ground to join with
hundreds of others at this particular shrine. If you see one on TV
that's closest to the weird "three athletes stuck halfway through a quarter
of a pie plate" sculpture, that's the shrine. There was at least one
pro Betacam team taping that site at the time -- dunno from where --
so who knows, maybe you'll see me on TV.

The members of this mailing list and the DT IRC server are among the
greatest people I've ever met, and I was proud to take this small
action on behalf of all of us, no matter what country you're from. Be
proud, folks, and think a bit tonight about terrorism and shattered
    dreams.

BTW, the timing was no accident; I got to the area of the bombing at
around five after nine EDT, and decided it would be appropriate to
wait until 21:12 to plant the flag. Many of us great people are Rush
    fans, too. :)

    On the video:

During the in car interview, they talk about how they recorded the album at Beartracks in Suffern, NY (right down the street from my house), in a few days. In reality, probably a couple weeks. The owner of the studio, is Jay Beckenstien, the lead sax player from the leading comtemporary jazz band - Spyro Gyra (I'm also a big fan of). Well, Jay was not too keen on doing the solos, nor the video at all (notice durring the studio footage, he finishes a solo segment and kinda winces at the way it sounded). They compromised of course, and all you see is Jay's shadow in the AD video, as he plays the sax. He did not want to be identifiable in the video. But that is understandable, 'cause he is not an official member, nor a prog. rock sax player. BTW, he is a real nice guy too. The house and the studio (same building) are made of stone walls. Notice in LiT, when Mike is playing his set in the studio. The walls behind him are stone. The studio was rennovated from what once was a corn mill or cattle barn, or something. Also: I used to work for the landscape company who maintained the lawns and plowed the driveway there. DT recorded I&W around the new year of '92. There was a big snow storm when they arrived at the studio, and we had just started plowing. All the guys had to carry the gear down the long hilly driveway, as we plowed, because they couldn't get the vans through the 8'' of snow!!! More too tell, but I don't want to waste bandwidth. :)

I am a member of both the YtseJam (duh) and Freaks, > and I find the 'jam to be much more interesting. The purpose of a mailing list though is to talk about a specific topic, not just to "shoot the breeze". If there's nothing DT related to say, then why do you have to say anything? If you wanna just shoot the breeze with other people on the list that you think are cool, then form another list, but this list has mutated (for lack of a better word) into nothing more than a gather place to talk about whatever people feel like. Years ago, if there was no DT info, people just didn't post, and I personally liked it much better that way. > like a bunch of essays put together. Our posts don't have to have a thesis > statement. The YtseJam has become less of a place to talk about DT, and more > of a place to talk with fellow DT fans My point exactly, and unlike you, I don't enjoy it -- I subscribe to a mailing list to talk about a topic, not just talk about anything because a group of people shares a common interest. > I seemingly know almost all of the name of the people who post now, > from reading and IRC. I just like seeing what people type; what they're up > to, etc. There is a time to analyze music and there is a time to relax. > IMO, school is the place to analyze. Ytsejam should not just be a "time to relax". Once again, there's a topic you're supposed to stay on. What if all mailing lists were just "hang-out" lists? Be pretty pointless to have mailing lists, wouldn't it? > The YtseJam also gives you a sense of belonging; like a special bond > with others. I feel that the YtseJam is more a family, and the Freaks is > more colleagues. I don't think it is that hard for everyone to put up with > a few minor annoyances. Nobody is perfect. Again, you can get a "special bond" and stay on topic at the same time. I'm on the Forgotten Realms mailing list (AD&D), and people know each other, but we don't just talk about anything -- we keep all conversations strictly on AD&D topics. No flame wars, no "hey, I just did <fill in the blank> today, isn't that cool?", etc etc. Once again, this isn't a flame, just an opinion. I've been on the 'Jam for ages (although I don't post often -- see comments above about posting only when there's something important to say), and I used to enjoy reading the posts. Nowadays, it's just people sending personal messages to each other over a list, and it has a more local BBS type of feel (if anyone has any experience with those -- not too many of them out there anymore, now that everything has been put on the 'net) I could also do without all the Metallica talk, Van Halen talk, etc etc etc. If I were interested in them, I'd join their mailling lists. Don't get me wrong, I like reading about NEW bands, and have gotten some great music from the list (Enchant, Shadow Gallery, etc), and that's fine to talk about IMHO, but people don't have entire threads about the bands

Anyway, this won't change anything, but at least I got it off my chest *grin* If anyone wants to comment, feel free, just keep in mind I'm not flaming anyone or anything, just stating my opinion.

    Dear fellow DT fanatics,

I think we are overlooking an important though about DT without vocals. Take the vocals out of DT and you take DT out of radio. There is no way that they would receive radio support without some lyrical content. What about bands like Crimson you say? Keep in mind that the older bands have been around since the late 60s or early 70s when the prog trend started. That music received its greatest media support at that time. Even monster acts like Rush would be doomed if it came to straight instrumental performances. Although I love YYZ and Where's My Thing?, Rush would not have made it as an instrumental band. Why? People need a lyric to stick in their head to identify a track by a band that they may not recall the name of. I seriously doubt that someone could walk into an HMV or Tower and say "Do you have this song?" and then hum sections of Erotomania or Ytsejam. Even Satch resorted to vocals on a couple of tracks from Flying In A Blue Dream. I may be mistaken, but I think that Big Bad Moon opened him up to a whole new group of fans. Fans who like to SING along with music. For a more current example, consider King's X. Take the vocals out of Over My Head. You wouldn't have much left that would be memorable. Those of us who know them would probably still remember the song, but it would just be another jam to many. I prefer songs that aren't instrumentals. The wondering, "What did he mean when he said that", is part of the enjoyment I get when listening to songs and I would greatly miss that. I agree that the guys have the chops to pull it off without James, but I doubt they could get enough radio support world wide to make a go of it in the long run. Besides, we'd all miss the dancing turtles who, slowly but surely, CAAAUDUPWIMAAAAY!!!! :)

    Cheers,

If you watch the part where Wayne and Harth go back stage to Alice Cooper, you can see him sitting in a chair drinking. Use your VCR and hit Frame Advance right after Wayne says "Sorry." You will see a long haired Derek sitting there. His name is also in the credits where it says, "Alice's Band." Just thought you guys would think it's pretty cool.

Point WELL taken. I agree, now that I think of it. This kind of thing would piss me off (hopefully it won't happen when I see the guys on the 28). Kind of like the huge ass smelly drunk guy that was yelling "rock 'n roll" and crap like that and falling all over everybody at the Maiden show early last Spring (he reminded me of the guy that puked on Beavis when he & Butthead went to the Creatures of Rock show). I don't think I posted this (sorry if I already did), but I just found out last night about a single that was released a few years back for Comic Relief in Britain called "I Want to Be Elected," by Mr. Bean and the Smear Campaign, featuring >Bruce Dickinson<. (for those who don't know, Mr. Bean is a British comedy show featuring comedian Rowan Atkinson - HILARIOUS stuff). Anybody know about this? If so, is it possible to get ahold of a copy? Sounds, well, interesting. Oh yeah, one last thing. Thanks to the dude who did/is doing the tape trade thing. I was here when it was done before, but didn't take part (much to my chagrin). I was going to ask about that, but it looks like you beat me to it. I'm interested in taking part. Thanks. Just watched episode two (The Chimes of Big Ben) of The Prisoner the other day. Not a bad show. A local video store has something like eleven tapes of various episodes. I heard a rumour that there was at one time plans for a movie based on this show. Anyone know about this? Man, sorry for the lack of DT content. I usually try and stay somewhat on topic, but I went off on tangents this time. Oh well, enough of my yackin'. Let's boogie!
