I would like to see Midnight step up to the mic. He certainly
has the range and he can write as well. God knows it would be a vast
improvement from his house painting gig. :(

I can understand their reasons then. The record industry can
be a stifling nightmare. When we did a demo a few years back, we had
people in our faces constantly. "try this...it should go like
this....that doesn't work" CHRIST!!!! It's our music let us decide!!!
If only life were perfect! :)
BTW, I would love to hear some Atomic Opera. Is it still
    available?

I guess I'll have to give my opinion on the subject of a new vocalist to
actually become a member of the "Jam" family... I think Labrie was
perfect for the band, and any replacement will have to lurk in his
shadows... (Blah, Blah, Blah)... It might be better if the guys just got
another guitar player to backup John P. and make up for no vocals...
Purely instrumental magic... It might somehow break the limitations (if
any) on everyone else in the band allowing better music... if this can
be achieved in the first place... I think it would be good to have a
couple of albums of pure emotions w/o lyrics... Just letting the music
do the talking... Thanx for your patience... Does any one know if any of
the members of Dream Theater read these postings???

    Greetings Jammers,

I'm gonna kill several birds with one stone, or reply to several
various topics in one post as it turns out in this case...

Replacements for James (if he ever left):

                    Ray Alder (Fates Warning)
                    Zak Stevens (Savatage)
                    Geoff Tate (Queensryche)
                    The entire Galactic Cowboys crew.

But, here's the important part of my post... might want to be sure and
    check this out...

*******IMPORTANT: Please Read*********Warning: Flames not included*******

Okay, on the last two Jams suddenly there is some mention of trading tapes
filled with obscure music so that Jammers can enlighten each other with
new bands that would otherwise be overlooked... this has actually been
done in a quite organized fashion about a year ago... and I'm the guy
    that ran the thing.

Anywho.. after it was all over I had some requests to do another one.
And it looks like there is some new interest popping up... so....

    The Tape Swap returns...

Here's how this is going to work:

    1. You e-mail me and tell me you want to participate... I'll start
my list in about two weeks when I get back up to school, so don't e-mail
me until then... the account should go up in 2-3 weeks, so if you try
mailing anything before then it will bounce because my site is currently
not connected to the net. The address will be the same as last time:

            tapeswap@reich.uark.edu

    2. Everybody participating compiles a 90 minute tape of their favorite
obscure music... Bands like Sieges Even, Galactic Cowboys, Solitude
Aeturnus, Shadow Gallery, Clockwork, Ivanhoe, Enchant, Cairo, Superior,
etc. are all good choices for this.... the idea is to compile music that
will appeal to a prog-metal fan that they may not have heard. Bands like
Queensryche, DT, and Rush are probably already well-enough known that they
wouldn't really be appropriate, but we're not going to be real picky...
also feel free to step outside the realm of prog, but don't stray too far.
Last time I got some tapes that would have a classical piece or a
rap/metal song or such... actually turned out pretty cool, but let's try
and focus on the prog-metal realm and keep at least most (over half) of
    your tape to that genre.

    3. You make three copies of your compilation tape complete with three
copies of song info (include band name, song title, and preferably album
it was taken from and maybe a little info on the band). This song
info should be included on separate paper, not on the tape insert,
just in case someone wants to erase the tape later and use it as a
blank. These copies will be done on the Type-II cassettes (the high
    quality ones, but not metal).

    4. After I have received the names of everyone participating, I mix these
up and randomly assign each person with three names to send their
compilation tape to. In return you get a tape from each of the three guys
I assign your address to. I've still got the match-ups from the first
trade, so I'll make sure there isn't any overlap with people receiving
tapes from the same people as last time.

    5. Everybody receives three tapes in the mail full of obscure prog-metal
and finds new bands to search out and enjoy. Your cost: three Type-II
cassettes and postage (total shouldn't be more than $10). Everybody pays
their own postage so no money will exchange hands... last time this
worked fine and everyone received all three tapes promised... no bad
traders reared their heads. At worst you are out postage for three tapes
and you end up with three quality cassette tapes that you can use for
    whatever you want.

    6. Sound cool? Good... in about 2-3 weeks I'll post a follow-up letting
everyone know to flood my mailbox and we'll get this thing off the ground
again. The address again will be: tapeswap@reich.uark.edu

When you *do* e-mail me, I'll need this info:

    1. Name
    2. E-mail address
    3. Complete mailing address

One last thing... USA people will be matched up with USA people, foreign
people will be matched up with foreign people... works out best for the
postage that way, otherwise a USA person might have to spend $4-5 mailing
a tape to someone in Europe and in return only receive tapes from 3 guys
in USA. Kinda sucks for the foreign people, but if the foreign response
is good enough I'll try to match people up within their own countries.

That's all for now... be on the lookout for the message in 2-3 weeks
letting you know to start signing up.

    DrX

    Hey Y'all,

I heard a joke and had to put it out here. If you are easily offended please delete now.

A teacher is in class with her students. She submits a small problem to them. She says to the kids, "There are two birds sitting in a tree. I pick up a rifle and shoot one of the birds. How many birds remain?"

Little smarty pants Johnny frantically waves his hand and yells to the teacher, "None, Miss!!"

"No, No, No" she replies. "There is one left - Remember, I only shot one of them".

"Yes Miss, but there is none left 'cause the other one heard the gun shot and flew away in fright!" The teacher replied, "It wasn't the answer I was looking for, but I like the way you are thinking."

The very next day, smarty pants Johnny comes running into the classroom and yells, "Miss, Miss, I have a small problem for YOU to solve". He continues, "You are in a shopping mall and you see three women and they are each eating an ice cream cone. The first one is licking her cone, the second woman is biting her cone and the third woman is sucking her cone. Which one is the married woman?" The teacher ponders her answer for a few seconds and replies, "The woman sucking the cone."

Little Johnny says, "No, Miss, it is the one wearing the wedding ring, but I like the way you are thinking!"

    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !! ! !! ! !

Sorry for the no VH content. I just thought we could use a joke!

After looking forever for carved in stone, I finally decided to get it off cdconnection (they have it for $13.17). But as I was picking up DWD I saw it on the front row at Hastings. I almost leapt for joy except that there were they hicks behind me I didn't want to make a scene.

Anyway, Shadow Gallery is extremely awesome. I was blown away. They are known as a DT clone, and that's probably true to a point, but anybody who A) wants to clone DT, 2) Has the ability to clone DT, and D) adds their own style, is plenty unique already. Their stuff is a lot more keyboard/piano oriented, and their lyrics have more religious content. Their main pianist (they have 2) is really good. Once again, I'd hate to say it, but this guy could play circles around Kevin or Derek. Their guitarist has crazy chops, but he doesn't have as many solo opportunities as JP does:(

I got what the knocking means on track 20 after the first 3 minutes on my first listen. I'll explain it by email if interested.

I also highly recommend Dead Winter Dead. It was good from the first listen. Same with SG. I was somewhat surprised since lots of prog takes a few listens to get into. It is especially good if on the first listen you sit down and read the liner notes and synopsis as you listen. It is quite heart-wrenching as advertised.

I just love how Savatage is breaking down the walls of music. The madrigal round harmony things make me giddy every time, and I've never heard it done before. Also, having the piano in so many songs that are otherwise very heavy give the music a whole different feel. I love it.

My brother, who I recently converted, mentioned that this style should be called "regressive" instead of "progressive" because the last time popular music had any musical value was when motzart, beethoven, and tchikows chicovs tchikovski that other guy were around. I'm especially proud of my brother's conversion because he was nothing but classical and stuff until he saw the light that is...Dream Theater. (sniff)

What I would *really* like to see is a four-member jam (minus Labrie) on MTV's Unplugged. That would be something. I love Labrie, but if he was there, they would play all the acoustic songs (ie. another day, LSOAD, etc.) and the public wouldn't get a feel for what DT *really* is.

They could just jam or write some new stuff or do instrumental medleys. Whoever has heard "Long Island Expressway" off Acoustic Dreams knows what I'm talkin' about. That stuff rocks!

....And then...finish it off with "The YtseJam...acoustic". That *would* be something!!!!!

Yeah, I'd also like to see the guys go instrumental now that someone mentioned it. It woule be pretty cool if they wrote songs (including lyrics) for us all to sing to. Kind of like a Karaoke DT ;). Thanks to the guys who mentioned it. IF they HAD to get a replacement, though, I'd like to see Dickinson sing. LaBrie is certainly the best for the job with DT. To the dude who asked about the U2 song at the end of Subcon., it's "Bad," from The Unforgettable Fire. This song is largely regarded as one of U2's best (their Live Aid performance being arguably the best performance of the song. I agree). I like it for its simple beauty.

A few days ago we were talking on IRC/#ytsejam and Pam Wheaton (our own Rockin' Cabbie) mentioned that she'd like me to plant a US flag at the site of the Centennial Park bombing. There are a few spots near the bomb site where people have created ad-hoc shrines, with flags and notes, etc., to remember the victims -- I had been down there earlier in the evening, as I live in Atlanta, and had seen the shrines.

Anyway, I thought it was a great idea and everyone else on the DT channel did too, so I figured I'd just plant a flag there for all of us. Last night (Sun.) I finally got my chance, and at 9:12 p.m. I pushed a medium-sized American flag into the ground to join with hundreds of others at this particular shrine. If you see one on TV that's closest to the weird "three athletes stuck halfway through a quarter of a pie plate" sculpture, that's the shrine. There was at least one pro Betacam team taping that site at the time -- dunno from where -- so who knows, maybe you'll see me on TV.

The members of this mailing list and the DT IRC server are among the greatest people I've ever met, and I was proud to take this small action on behalf of all of us, no matter what country you're from. Be proud, folks, and think a bit tonight about terrorism and shattered dreams.

BTW, the timing was no accident; I got to the area of the bombing at around five after nine EDT, and decided it would be appropriate to wait until 21:12 to plant the flag. Many of us great people are Rush fans, too. :)
