Hey all, I was gone for the summer, and didn;t have a chance to read
any Ytsejams, so I'm kinda lost on the news.

I was just wondering if anyone knew the release date for DT's
upcoming CD, and maybe the name of it and/or track listing. Sorry if this
has been answered before. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Last jam someone mentioned how oftentimes some members of the band who
is the subject of said tribute will make appearances on the album.
Remember, Ozzy appeared on the Sabbath tribute (my faves on that album
were the one Dickinson sang on and the Megadeth cover (I like "Paranoid"
    anyway). Cheers.

    Good Afternoon!

    >Date: Mon, 12 Aug 1996 23:42:03 -0700 (PDT)
    >From: "Paul W. Cashman" <vanyel@crl.com>

    >A report on the National Midnight Star, the Rush mailing list, says
    >that some Canadian record stores were mailed a letter asking them not
    >to order or stock WORKING MAN because Rush was not receiving any
    >royalties from the sales, and because (they said) the recording
    >quality wasn't that good.

That's the first I've heard about he royalties. However, it is
true that Music World, Tower and HMV won't touch the disc. Sam the
Record Man may, but I am still awaiting word on that.

    >This sounds to me like dirty pool. I didn't hear anything at all
    >wrong with the recording, and Terry Brown should deserve better
    >treatment from Rush. Hmm, a modern-day "Broon's Bane" here.

Agreed. Terry was as much a part of the sound that got them
noticed as the members themselves, and I can't help but wonder if this
    was done to spite him.

    >As for the royalties, I thought if the songwriting credits listed
    >Lee/Lifeson/Peart then it's a done deal; either the royalties get
    >paid or Magna Carta gets in legal trouble.

That's my understanding of the process as well. I have also
heard something to the effect that if artists use material from one
artist exclusively , with the intent of profiting from it, they must
seek the permission of the artist prior to the recording. However, I
was under the impression that the tribute originally had the band's
blessing and they had a change of heart after recording had been
    completed.
I feel that Rush/SRO's attitude to this whole thing is
completely immature. Christ!!! Wake up boys!!! The people on this
tribute IDOLIZE your music. They could have done a tribute to the
Beatles or any one of 1,000 other artists, but they chose you!!!
Rush should be flattered as hell that others have put their
energies into this work. In fact, many people who are not Rush fans
may wind up drawn to their work by the range of artists on the
    tribute.

    >If this is so, well..... As a protest, I -will- purchase TEST FOR
    >ECHO, but not until the second or third week of release.

I applaud that decision and suggest that many of us do the
same. I may even boycott their next Toronto stop and I haven't missed
a tour since AFTK in 1977.
I'm just thoroughly disgusted to think that the members of
Rush, who have brought so much inspiration to us all over the years
with their open-minded approach to music, have now chosen a path of
contempt and arrogance toward those who idolize them.
If the situation doesn't clear up, they could potentially
destroy Magna Carta and take all of MC's artists down with them. If
that happens, I will never forgive them. I will not buy TfE until I
have heard whether or not the band has backed away from their
aggressive posture. I have heard recently that they are pursuing a law
suit against Magna Carta and want ALL sales of the record halted.
As I said on IRC, so much for the Spirit of Radio. It is dead
    in Toronto.

    Cheers,

    Rick

While I don't think it sucks, it seems to be rather...
uninspired. The mix sounds really muddy as well. It's almost
like it's a demo or something. The rhythm section is pretty tight
almost throughout, however. James' vocals are the best on the
album, and I think Jacob's ladder is great (though I don't
really care for the original). Some parts seem like they were
being tried too hard, and other parts (Analog Kid) don't seem
near as tight as the original. AFter listening to it for over
a week, it's going to the bottom of the pile for a while.

since I already have DWD and Streets (my favorite SAVA album) I have read
that some don't recommend Gutter Ballet and I have only seen (I can't
remember the name) one CD with a skull on the cover, what is that called?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!

Hey, just bought Marillion's "Season's End" at a used store for $2.
    Pretty kewl, I must say.
While at said store, I saw an Iron Maiden 3 CD set in the imports
section called something like "Lords of the Twilight." It was going for
$74, I believe. I've never seen or heard of this one. Anybody know about
this? Is it worth the price? Thanks.

And about that Rush thing. If they really said that
(referring to what Paul got from the NMS) then they
really suck. If one of the members _had_ played on the
tribute, then perhaps they could've had _some_ creative
control over part of it. Now I'm kind of sorry that I
dissed the tribute (I did forget to add that I loved
CTTH by Fates). Good idea about postponing buying the
CD for a few days. We can always tape it off the radio
before it's released. Sonsofbitches. I'm going to boycott
the tour as well. (Well, that's going a bit too far...)

    Hi.
I just got "Critical Mass" in the mail the other day, and I'd just like
to add my voice to the mighty throng proclaiming, "Get this CD!" The
sound quality on this one is fantastic. It was well worth the expense.
If you can afford the $50 price tag, order it. If you can't afford it,
take out a loan and *then* order it (-8 Am I making myself clear?
Just about the closest thing I have to a complaint about it is the way
the bonus track is "hidden" at the end, so that you can't just index it
directly (BTW, Mike, how many drummers are performing on that? Even
    Peart would have to be twins to play it solo without overdubbing.);
however, that track, once found, is wonderful. Imagine alternating back
and forth between distant cousins of "Natural Science" (Hyperspace) and
the marimba part of "The Rhythm Method". That description still doesn't
quite do it justice, though. Maybe I should listen to the whole thing a
    couple dozen more times (-8

Has anyone ever heard of any of these guys? I've already gotten the Angra.

I know a lot of people on this list like Queen and Queen are an influence
to DT. On Saturday August 17 from 10-11pm EDT there is a Route 96 Queen
Concert "Budapest" and this is on VH-1.

    Hello!

Why Angra disk did you get?
In case it is "Angels Cry" : "Theatre Of Fate" by Viper is quite similar,
because the Angra vocalist/keyboardist Andre Matos was a member of Viper
    back then.

    Have fun!

I just figured out what "asdf" means (the compulsory subject for posts
    to ytsejam-request).

It's so obvious, and I feel very silly now. I always thought it was some
    cryptic acronym :-)
