I believe that Ken Tamplin was the original source to my info.

    >>>>>BTW, Santana follows the teachings of Indian (?) Sri Chimnoy.

He used to, when he was working with another excellent guitarist, John
McLaughlin (Mahavishnu Orchestra). I have read the info on his change to
Christrianity from several different, relatively recent sources. Carlos
remains a very spiritual type, and is rather unconventional.

    Hi,

I'd just like to 'Take the time' to say a few things aobut my favourite
band..Dream Theater, of course. I've been to both John Petrucci and Mike
Portnoy's clinics, and they have both been very good. I'm so glad that
the members of the band take time to go and have clinics, and I think
that it is nice that they sign and meet fans afterwards. I know that
they aren't as popular as some artists, but this sort of kindness is
rare to find in any artists nowadays, and it is good to see that there
are some people that actually care about the fans, and about the
musicans that look up to them as an inspiration. I'm looking forwards to
seeing them at more clinics, hearing all their new cds, and seeing them
hopefully in concert in Ohio sometime. Thank you Dream Theater for being
such an exemplatory band, both music wise and public wise. It's nice to
know that some musicians still care about the music!!

    Maria

I can't say I've ever heard of that one before. You might want

Myung on da boomin' bass, Michael "Abbey Mo-Fo Road" Portnoy on da kit
wif da booty kickin' scratch and electronic drum samples and John
"Strangs" Petrucci on lead wah and phaze shiftuh. Maybe they'll do a
song about responsible sex, or better yet, a rap parody of
    Shakespeare. "Hamlet Hamlet baby". ;)

You're not alone by any means though. Many people just can't warm up

I heard about this on ABC News, so it's probably not bullshit (like Good
Times). They said that it is set to be triggered when your computer thinks
it is August 22, and again on Sept. 22. To avoid any problem, they
suggested not turning on your PC tomorrow. I would add that if you reset
your computer's clock and date, that ought to work too.

for roughly $15, but hurry up, cause there ain't many left.

2 - People going to Derek's party. If you have a Ytsejam shirt or hat or
anything like that, wear it. If you see someone wearing a Ytsejam shirt
or hat, come up and say hi. Turns out that I missed a few people at JP's
NYC clinic because they weren't wearing Ytse. Most of us have no idea
what others look like, and I want to meet some of you. So, fuck what Mom

Just to give a different opinion, I ordered Mastermind I and III and they are both
great. Mastermind sounds like a harder version of ELP and they do sound progressive
but not very complex. Volume I was released in 1988 and it has that cheesy keyboard
sound that Greg Lake uses on "Brain Salad Surgery", but it is a good cheesy sound.
Some songs on the first album are a bit too cheesy (keyboard sound) but then there
are excellent songs that should please the fan of DT.

"Tragic Symphony" (Volume III) is even better, IMHO. Bill Berends solos are
restrained but full of passion. Songwriting is better too, and this is a concept
album that explores the depths of human emotion. If you are bored and have nothing
to do, check out the Mastermind page and download some of the sound bytes. The
samples should give you an indication whether or not you will like them. Tragic
Symphony is one my favorite concept albums and comes close to Savatage's "Dead Winter
Dead" and King's X "Gretchen goes to Nebraska".

Mastermind will play on Progday '96 which starts on August 30-September 1. Also,
will be playing Deus Ex Machina (Italy), Ars Nova (Japan), and several others. Deus
Ex Machina I hear is a really complex band and have many different instruments. The
vocalist is known for his incredible voice.

If you want to receive information on Progday '96, email Peter Renfro
(prognerd@vnet.net). Come out and hear some different progressive rock bands play
and get to expand your musical boundaries. I have found many prog rock bands that I
love, and I'm the type that likes the harder edge.

If any jammers are going to Progday and would like to share a hotel room, please
email me because I want to cut down on my expenses.

    Walter.

To be completely honest, I knod of like Awake over I&W, too. not to
slag I&W. It is most definitely a brilliant album. I just like the
sound of Awake better (those beefy guitars on songs like "Lie," "The
Mirror," etc. MAN! That just gets me going). "6:00" also. I used to
not like SDV a whole lot, but it really grew on me, and now is a
standout cut (though it is a bit on the depressing side ;). Also, you
can say what you want, but I like the drum sound on Awake better.
Glad to hear Working Man hasn't been pulled here. I'll be keeping my
eye out for it and pick up extra copies if I do (I'm not holding my
breath, though. The stores around here can be a bit on the iffy side at
    times). Happy listening.

Hey everyone! This is my first post in a long while so I'll try to cover
as much as I can. Not that I'm gonna steal Rick Terry's title for "most
    frequent poster" or anything. ;)

    In JAM #1769, WildKoba@aol.com wrote:

    > yo check this out- just saw in the news that there's supposed to be a mad
    > virus out tomorrow. it's called the "hare krishna" virus, and it ain't

    > michelangelo came about, a certain jammer fell prey to it, and i don't

The "Hare" virus is indeed dangerous. It worms its way into your
computer and plants itself in every program that you run from then on, as
well as any floppy disks that you use while infected. Every August 22
and September 22 it will display messages like "All Hail Hare Krsna" or
something like that. It can also overwrite important parts of your hard
    drive.

Staying off the net won't help anything... if you've already got it,
you're in a world of hurt. I think it's been out for just under a month,
so any downloaded files will be prime suspects.

I recommend everyone download McAfee's VirusScan for DOS/Windows/Whatever
and make sure you're all clean. (http://www.mcafee.com or
ftp://ftp.mcafee.com) I'd hate for anyone to come down with this one.

The reason I know about this is because we (Intel Customer Support) at
work have been scrambling furiously to find a fix for this virus. :)

    Regarding "Working Man":

I also sent E-mail to Magna Carta, and was told that they are not being
blocked in the US at all. They said that they under-estimated demand for
this CD and ran out of stock. They will press more CD's and get them to
    stores as quickly as possible.

Nobody should have to pay $25 for this tribute, when one can simply mail
Magna Carta a check for $15.98 (plus shipping) to get one in the mail.
I'll post their address if people want it.

    Regarding "Test For Echo":

So far, I've found 7 tracks from this album and I've put them on my FTP
site. If you have trouble connecting to the other sites with these
songs, point your FTP client to ftp://spiritone.com/pub/users/schnoor and
grab them from there. Hopefully this will take some of the load off the
    other servers.

I'm really starting to like Rush's latest efforts. I think it sounds a
lot like Counterparts (obviously) but with a newer twist. Some of the
songs have interesting rhythms that obviously depart from the standard
4/4 of most of RTB and CP. I'm looking forward to getting this album as
soon as it comes out. I was thinking of boycotting it, but I realized
that I wanted this album worse than I wanted RUSH to suffer for blocking
    Working Man. :)

Oh... and to whoever found the Ibanez website and the pic of John
Petrucci... there is no link to any picture site on his guitar. Of
course I had to to click all over the picture. Thanks! :)

Any takers for a West Coast YtseCon? I'm lookin...

I've set up a small segement of my home-page with info about our
subtle Rush protest, the why's, etc.
    http://www.crl.com/~vanyel/index.html#protest

(right before that is where I summarize what we know so far.)

This is NOT a boycott (at least I'm not going that far unless I hear
definitely the CD has been pulled/banned, and it apparently hasn't
been), just a bit of a delay. To the guy who said "It won't make any
difference," maybe it won't. But it will make me feel a bit better,
and some others, too, and if Atlantic notices a slightly unusual
"bump" in the sales pattern, well, gee, isn't that funny....

    WORKING MAN Atlanta-area report: :)

Best Buy: never had it, one copy on order, "try back on Friday,
maybe." (This is a different store than where I bought it.)
Best Buy #2: same story, basically.
MediaPlay (one location): three copies in stock. I may get them if
it really seems the CD is hard to find. Heck, I might hide them in
with the Hawkwind or something where they'll never be found. :)
HMV: "never heard of it." Checked the computer. At least one copy
was back-ordered but had not come in.
Tower: sold out. Copies on back-order, I was the third person to
inquire that day. They didn't know when (or if) they'd get it.
Info-desk clerk was fascinated by net.tales.

None of the above had Altura, annoyingly enough. HMV even carries
most other Magna Carta CDs, plus Ivanhoe. Oh, well. The cool guy at
Tower said 800-ASKTOWER could mail-order either one.

    Dear jammers,

Hey all! Just got back from Hong Kong last night, still feeling the jet-lag! Anyways, just wanted to remind you of Derek's birthday party this Friday night, he invites all jammers and wants this to be a pre-YtseCon!

The day: Friday, August 23rd The place: People's Pub How to get there:

Take the Long Island Expressway to exit 51N, or you can take Northern State Parkway to exit 42 (Park Avenue). Go straight, pass the firehouse, then make a right on the fork in the road to East Park Avenue. Travel for about a mile and you will veer into Jericho Turnpike. After one traffic light, you will see a large shopping center to your right. Go pass the shopping center and you will see People's Pub to the right. It's a small place, so keep your eyes out for it!

Wear your ytsejam shirts! There's no cover charge, so don't worry about that at all. So come along! Bring your friends! This event is gonna rock!

    Yours, Jeff =)

    Dear jammers,

Hey there! Here's an update for the YtseCon III! First of all, it will take place at the La Guardia Marriot (Queens, NY), on Saturday, October 12th from 1pm to 5pm. We have spoken to Dream Theater and management, and they say that they should be there.

The cost for pre-paid tickets is $20 per person. The cost at the door will be $25 per person. This will cover the cost of the conference room and other miscellaneous stuff (name tags, programs, etc.). If you would like to pay in advance, please send a check to:

YtseCon III c/o Jeff Chew 350 Broadway, Suite 703 New York, NY 10013

When you send a check, please include a note or letter that says your name, return address, e-mail address, and phone number. This makes things a lot easier for us when we send the tickets back to you, plus if we ever need to get in contact with you.

Due to the lack of reservations, we have decided to return the block of 75 rooms to the Marriot. So, we have arranged it so that you can contact the Marriot through their 800 number. If you need a room, call the La Guardia Marriot at 1-800-882-1043. *REMEMBER TO TELL THEM THAT YOU ARE GOING TO THE "DREAM THEATER CONVENTION"*. If you need to find someone to split a room with, the staff is still doing that (well, Greg is), so you can contact him at grc8@columbia.edu.

If you plan on flying to the YtseCon III, we have arranged something with Rich Worldwide Travel so you can reserve airline tickets through them by calling their 800 number. Please call 1-800-431-1130, and tell them that you are going to the 'Dream Theater Convention'.

If you can provide a ride to the YtseCon III, or if you are in need of a ride, please contact me by either e-mailing me or calling me and I will see what I can do.

Well, that is all there is for now! I hope to see you at the YtseCon III!

    Yours, Jeff Chew =)
