It really annoys me that everytime I post this paragrah on the Queen
Tribute the paragraph is deleted and whatever I type after the paragraph
is thrown into another message on the digest...

    Lets try again:

    ------------------------------

A QUEEN tribute record is schedule for the fall featuring Rudy Sarzo and

Tony Franklin on bass and Tommy Aldrige and Carmine Appice on drums. The

other roles of guitars and vocals will vary from track to track with

Marty Friedman (Megadeth)/James LaBrie (Dream Theater) - 'Sheer Heart

Attack', Robby Krieger (The Doors) - 'We Are The Champions, Robin McAuley

(MSG) - 'I Want It All', Glenn Hughes/Jake E Lee - 'Get Down Make Love',

Bruce Kulick/Eric Singer (Kiss) - 'Save Me', Neurotic Outsiders - 'I'm In

Love With My Car', John Bush/Scott Ian (Anthrax) - 'It's Late'. Other

names being tossed around Steve Vai, Heart's Ann Wilson, Jon Bon Jovi,

George Lynch, Bruce Dickinson, Melissa Etheridge and Paul Shortino. The

tribute is being supported by management, with proceeds being directed to

    the Mercury Phoenix Fund.

I hope it worked. BTW I added blank lines throughout the paragraph...

I put in an order at cdconnection.com quite awhile ago and when I check
the status the cd is always On Order. Well I wrote management and they
    replied:

Yes, sorry, there has been a problem with the distribution of
MVG9019 - as best we can tell, the manufacturer has terribly
underestimated the demand, and the supply is extremely short.
We hope that stock will be available in the next few days. We
are making a second (unprecedented) pass through our supply
          line.

If you prefer, we can simply cancel the item (without penalty)
          and send the Becker CD.

For those wondering about Syphony X.
If you like Yngwie you'll like these guys. I don't recommend getting their
self-titled album but Damnation Game is really cool.

    For those wondering about Eldritch
I've only heard a little of these guys. It sounds like standard prog metal to
    me.

I agree that they are a musically talented band, but I will
warn anyone who picks up DSB not to expect a James clone at the mic.
Although he isn't a screamer, he has a much different
technique than James and lack James' range as well. I found that his
vocals seemed a little low in the mix at times. I think I would
compare him to a non-screaming, on key Kai Hansen (e-Helloween, Gamma
    Ray) in terms of tone.
However, the rest of the songs are quite progressive and their
is a nice crunch to the record. I bought this a few months back and
    listen to it fairly often.

    >the above mentioned townsend and so forth). via e-mail if possible.
    >it may sound silly and of no importance at all, but i do want to
    >know.

I'm responding here so that all can get in on the discussion.

This is a very interesting question. It is very difficult to
tell where James falsetto point starts because his alto-soprano
crossover point is very clean. I think he could probably do a
portamento from a 32' octave C to a 4' octave C and it would never be
apparent unless it was played back at a greatly reduced speed many
    times.
In that respect, I would compare him to Mercury. They both
have a similar technique and I would love to hear James sing some of
the more challenging Queen tracks. I think DT could do a fantastic job
covering a number of songs from A Night at the Opera. I would love to
hear a studio cover of The Prophet's Song, Love of My Life, Bohemian
Rhapsody or even Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon. Not that I'm a Queen
    fan of course. :)
I am a huge QR fan. While Geoff still sounds incredibly rich
in his lower registers, he is starting to lose his command of the 8'
    octave range.
His voice sounds very strained to me on the live recordings
I've heard from the PL tour and, in basic tone, bears very little
similarity to his sound on Mindcrime. At some point between O:M and
Empire, Geoff's voice underwent some dramatic changes and a large
portion of his upper register access vanished, probably as a result of
the stress of touring for an extended time period. This is arguable of
course, but he did choose to sing the opening of Neue Regal an octave
lower during the last tour. It may have been for effect, but I truly
feel that he no longer has the stability to sing that high for
sustained periods without falsetto. Geoff has never had James vibrato
control either. If both had operatic training, then Geoff has long
since stopped using his. My perception of his work on the PL tour was
that he was generally strong, but strained at times in the upper
    octaves.
I can't compare James to Luc because the style of music is so
different. I really don't know if we have anything to base a low
register opinion of James on. Does anyone know of a demo where he
    sings low?
Townsend, on the other hand, is all force with the subtlety of
a runaway train. I don't hear one shred of training in his voice and
his screaming tends to mask any sort of crossover that he might have.
He is, in my mind, a most unaccomplished singer. He has 2 modes of
operation, screaming and non-screaming. His vibrato technique is
negligible and his improvisational ability is limited. In fact, I'll
stop here because I hate him so much that I can't do a purely
objective look at his voice. (particularly after hearing what he did
    to Natural Science)
James is a rather unique animal in rock. Few vocalists can
soar the way he does and I have yet to hear anyone with his breathing
    and vibrato control.
James if you're reading this, please sing the Canadian anthem
the next time you guys come through Toronto! I'd love to hear an
accomplished talent do some justice to it. Besides, it's been TOO long
since you guys were last here!!

The comparisons to Phil weren't screaming related. I think
though that Anselmo has a much better clean voice than Townsend. When
I say dynamics, I am only referring to his ability to compose melodies
with varying styles and in different registers.

    >opinion, it's just a difference of opinion. to be 21 (or 22) and have
    >an industrial record that can beat crap outta nine inch nails seven
    >days a week is something to cling to, unless you despise industrial
    >(which *i* for the most part do).

Unfortunately, I really don't consider most industrial to be
music. At it's best it is hypnotic; at it's worst it's unlistenable. I
hate NIN with a passion and anything in that vein would get a less
than favourable impression from me. Sorry if that offends anyone, but
    that's my opinion.

    >sex & religion. the only one was the last and that -- as susan
    >mentioned above -- was 100 per cent steve vai-cals.

The song to which I was referring was In My Dreams With You.
The entire song could have done without screaming and the following
track Still My Beating Heart, suffers from the same condition. The
point at which the backing tracks are faded out and he is allowed to
do an acapella is, to my ears, a crime against humanity. As I said
earlier, it comes across as all force with no ability. I will never
    understand why Vai did that.

Before you pass your final judgment on them, try to pick up a
copy of the first record somewhere. It is MUCH more melodic than the
material on Machine Fish and bears a closer resemblance to King's-X
and Atomic Opera. This was the first record I bought by them and it is
    my favourite by far.

For those of you who asked about the new DT album, I know they
finished recording this summer and have enough stuff for a double-CD.
But they are not sure if that's what they're gonna do. And Mike said
not to expect anything before 97. So let's hope it's gonna be a
    Jan-Feb release.

I saw the HORDE tour last month in San Bernadino, CA and unfortunately King
Crimson was not in the Lineup. The lineup that I saw (Lenny Kravitz, Dave
Mathews, and Blues Traveler) attracted a fair-sized Dead crowd and most people
were dancing through the entire show (it was a great show, BTW). I don't think
that DT would have fit into this particular lineup.

They may have fit better on the current "Metalapalooza" tour because of the
presence of Soundgarden and Metallica. Personally, I would rather see them at a
show similar to the upcoming "OZ Fest" tour (put together by Ozzy) that features
an all metal/thrash lineup. I could only imagine a festival tour with Rush, DT,
    Fates Warning, Queensryche, etc.

    Hasta.

Well, Alex DOES improv a little here and there. For example, my
understanding is that the solo for "Cold Fire" on the last album was flown
in from the demo, since Alex was so pleased with his first take. You're
right, though, Rush isn't a heavily improvisational band (when they do cut
loose, it makes me wish they'd do it a little more). That having been said,
I don't see how it hurts for other bands to improvise in playing the tunes.
    I know I do.

First of all, man its great to know there are DT fans out there!!!! (I was
beginning to think my friend Dave and I were the only ones :^) I have been
in love with this band since Images and Words (Dont care too much for the
vocals on the first one, but the music still rules!!!!) I own every cd I can
get my hands on by these guys, plus the "Live in Tokyo" video they put out!!!

Anyway I noticed some references to Deen Casstronono's playing on the rush
tribute CD and I would just like to ask that you not criticize too much
unless you can do better yourself. Partly because he is a personal friend of
mine, and and partly because I have seen him play many, many times... I met
him when he was a nobody playing in this band called the "Wild Dogs" From
Salem/Portland, Oregon (A friend of mine was singing for them at the time)
and believe me he is no slouch (I am also a vocalist/drummer/guitarist, in
that order) anyway, he did not get where he is today by being a bad drummer
so cut him some slack ok? there are a lot worse out there you know, just
    watch MTV sometime. ;')

To the guy who said something about the new Tourniquet stuff (heard
about it, but hasn't heard it yet), it is more in the direction of
Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance. If any of you all have heard their recent
stuff, and were disappointed, rest assured, things look GOOD on the
horizon. I heard that their new album is supposed to be one of, if not
the most aggressive (and judgin by the two new ones, possibly most
progressive, too) album they've done yet. The lyrics take on a much
darker tone than their more recent stuff (Vanishing Lessons/Carry the
    Wounded). Very interesting lyrical content.
I know this has been talked about before on the 'jam, but i just heard
an announcement on the radio (K-SHE 95 in St. Louis for anybody from
there) that teh Eric Johnson/Satch/Vai tour is not rumour, but fact.
Life is good. BTW, the track they played from Johnson's new one sounded
    really good.
Well, that's about all for now. Cheers.

P.S. Randall Braun, could you please e-mail me? I lost all my mail and
addresses recently due to a MAJOR malfunction by a family member.
    Thanks, dude.

I have this event marked down as happenning on the 23rd (next Friday), 8:00
PM, Elwood, LI (of course, I could be wrong, but that's what I got). I was
hoping for more directions and possibly someone who was either driving, or
wanted to share gas from Central Jersey area. I would greatly appreciate to
    hear anything more about this...
