A while ago, I was accused of posting a review of the Rush trib that was
"confused and ignorant." I responded, but I never saw it <I guess due to
the recent admin difficulty> so I would like to reiterate what I said.

My post was not confused, except for the fact that I confuse the rhythm guit
player on La Villa w/ Steve Morse. For that I apologize to Steve. My post was
not ignorant, as I have been listening to Rush since I was 4-5 years old. I
am not ignorant to their music. I am also a music student very familiar with
the concept of personal interpretation of an existing composition. I still
contend that most of the guitar playing on the CD, with the exception of
John P, Jim M, and James M, is a total wank-fest. Sure it's ad lib. Alex
Lifeson has not had an ad-lib solo in 15 years. His solos are well thought
out. If he did play an ad-lib solo, it was very carefully relearned for
live performance.

I thought my review was pretty objective. I stated what I didn't like
followed by what I liked. Some things are also growing on me, but NOT the
guitar playing, except by the aforementioned players.

My gripe with "The Trees": Rush has stated before that there is no serious
message in that song, and that Neil wrote it with a sort of cartoon in mind.
The way that the singer sings it makes it sound like it's life and death
drama. He is the very definition of "overwrought vocals" a term which I
personnally hate, but this is it. The guitar solo is also wank-y. I don't
think the keyboardist quite has the knack of the pitch bender either. If
you are going to divebomb, don't do it at the end of EVERY phrase. The
flourish before the keyboard solo is also annoying. You COULD call it
chromatic modality, but I think that's giving him a little too much benefit
of the doubt.

I love Analog Kid, Mission, Nat Sci, Closer, Red Barch, and Freewill.

Well, that's enough from me...

Magna Carta has an ad in the new Metal Edge for Working Man and another
release. The word "Rush" is absent from the ad. The music that inspired
Working Man is reffered to as "the compositions of Lee, Lifeson and Peart." I
think it is very strange that they can't even use the band's name.

Hi,

For anyone that wants to come to irc, here's what you need to know.
go to <irc.dreamt.org> under port enter <2112> And then in channel name you put
<#ytsejam> and that should do it! There are no special times when people are
there, but usually anytime in the mid afternoon and till dawn (eastern time)
someone is usually around.

Hey,

I've got a band which is right up there in talent with Dream
Theater, have great guitar work, drumming is excellent (although not
quite up to par with Mike Portnoy, but then again, who is?), and play
with lots of odd times, difficult phrases.
The band is LEVIATHAN. The only release I have of them is
"Deepest Secrets Beneath". It is truly excellent and a must-buy for all
DT fans. They play phrases like 6/8, 10/8, 6/8, 6/8, 5/4, etc. Very
original. In fact, in their thanks section, they have in bold, special
thanks to Dream Theater, probably for inspiring their music. CHECK IT
OUT, ALL!

well i love him, but i am not a fan.

you should check out strapping young lad (album is called "heavy as
a really heavy thing"), which is pure devin, from songwriting and
lyrics to all arrangements and most instruments. it's very
industrial, sometimes you can't tell if it's music or just noise, but
it's still very musical. the first song (s.y.l.) has to be THE anthem
of industrial metal. a live judas priest cover also included ("exciter"),
and he's brilliant on it.

some questions too, as i've been away from my homeland and thus all
computers for a month now (hitchhiking thru whole europe and blah
blah).

first off, any news concerning any new stuff from dream theater?

secondly, have any technique-fans out there done some statistics in
the vein of "how many octaves can james cover without getting
overwhelmingly falsetto-ish"? i basically want some comparisons to
the other singers (geoff tate, freddie mercury, luciano pavarotti,
the above mentioned townsend and so forth). via e-mail if possible.
it may sound silly and of no importance at all, but i do want to
know.

ok, later.

dt stands for devin townsend too, as if you never knew. (that much about apologies.)

since when hasn't his dynamics changed? devin townsend is still doing industrial. yes, he was 19 when the record came out. no, as far as i know, he doesn't have the lack of vocal depth to cover up. to compare him to phil anselmo is almost blasphemy to me.

well, obviously not that seriously. i just like devin's singing and songwriting lots more than phil anselmo's. it's not a matter of opinion, it's just a difference of opinion. to be 21 (or 22) and have an industrial record that can beat crap outta nine inch nails seven days a week is something to cling to, unless you despise industrial (which *i* for the most part do).

THE record you were talking about... which was it? vai's or magna carta's blah blah? just askin', cuz he never sang a pure *ballad* on sex & religion. the only one was the last and that -- as susan mentioned above -- was 100 per cent steve vai-cals.

ok, i'm outta here. been smokin' too much of black hash tonite. (just got back from my copenhagen-amsterdam-paris tour, y'know.) :-))

i was trying to think of what the cowboys sounded like to me (i really really disliked them, btw), and i figured it out. some of you might hate me, but whatever.......

galactic cowboys = echloyn (sans keys) + soundgarden (on a bad day) + megadeth ("youthanasia" era).

i like echolyn, sgarden, and other eras of megadeth. so you could say then i should like gc. but man, it just didn't happen. damn.

anyone have the address to the people's pub? i would appreciate it if someone forwarded it. thanks.

I can't remember if this has been brought up before, so bear with me. Would it do the band any good to take a summer and do some dates with either the HORDE tour or Lallapalooza? Here's why I ask.

I'm getting ready for the hell of first year law school, with orientation here in sunny Morgantown. This morning I ran into a guy with a T-shirt from the Pittsburgh HORDE show this week, with King Crimson. I asked him how it was, and the specifically how KC was. He said they missed about half KC's set, but that they were "different" and "pretty cool." He also said he had never heard of them before. Now, knowing what a great live band DT is, do you all think similar things might happen to them if they spent some time with one of these festival tours?

Just curious.

This is for any music lover:

Today I heard the advance single "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend" from the Aug. 20th release "October Rust" by Type O Negative.

I just wanted to tell everyone that this IS THE BEST STUFF I HAVE EVER HEARD BY THEM. Not to mention the best new material by any band this year!!!

They have improved dramatically from the already-brilliant "BLoody Kisses".

For those who hated them for Queensryche - give it a chance and BUY IT!!

For those who have never heard their music - give it a chance and BUY IT!!!

For those who love Type O Negative - What the fuck do you think??? :)

Hello there !!!!!

Some of you may remember a few weeks ago I ranted about a guy playing at a bar who said that he rejected DT's offer to sing with them. He said he was glad because Awake didn't sell well( in his eyes at least). Well Tuesday night I go out again, and this time to my shock someone screams out RUSH at request time. Now since it is just a guitarist and a singer I'm thinking no way. Next thing you know the guitarist starts playing "Tears" from 2112. They did the whole song, and I almost shit myself. I walked up to him later and told him that he had redeemed himself.

Wednesday night I am closing Manager at Waldbaum's in Melville N.Y. and I see this girl walking around in an Awake shirt. I was impressed. I walked up to her and said " I like the shirt" she said thanks. And to top it all off, she was attractive too. Man I love Dream Theater!!!!! Elen sila lumenn omentilmo, Mithrandir

Hello everyone, it's BABS. Wanted to let everyone know that Jeff Chew left a message on my voice mail yesterday. He wanted me to post to the list to remind you about Derek Sherinian's birthday party. It is being held at People's Pub in Long Island which is off the Jericho Turnpike.

He asked me to try to locate the pub's address and telephone number. Could someone, if they know the location and directions on how to get there, please post to the 'jam as soon as possible about it. Also, Jeff did not leave the date that this was to take place, but I assume it must be on Derek's birthday (does anyone know the correct date?).

Jeff is currently in Hong Kong (he will be returning a few days before the party) and does not have 'net access he would appreciate's any 'jammers help on this.

Thank you.
