Whew!!! I just caught up on a weeks worth of jams. Here are some
    of my thoughts:

Girlfriends and DT: I tried my best, but I still can't convert her. She
likes the occasional song, like WFS, LSOAD, AD, etc, and she can even
tell when I'm playing DT in the car by James's voice, but she's not a
fan. Maybe it is the song lengths. She's not a very patient person in
    general.

Song lengths: Personally, as a general rule, I prefer the shorter DT
songs. And I also personally enjoy playing a short (3 - 5 minutes),
well-crafted pop song than a long, drawn-out epic. Most of the time (and
remember my experience with 20min + songs is seriously limited)
they end up being tedious, self-indulgent, and blatently unnecessary (I
know, I'm probably inviting flames). But this has not been the case with
DT, at least not yet. I love ACOS and I'm sure I'll love MetII. Maybe if
bands would make their epics as musically interesting (not necessarily
meaning complicated) as DT does, I wouldn't mind as much. Oh well.

Double album: This was discussed a while ago. There are positives and
negatives about it. On the positive side: the more DT the merrier for us
die-hards. I would buy the album without hestitation. But is this really
the smartest move for the band business-wise? Probably not. As I said
before when this issue was raised, I believe Awake sold significantly
less than I&W and I have no idea how much ACOS sold. Regardless, there is
probably a lot of pressure on DT by the record label to "redeem"
themselves in the label's dollar-sign illuminated eyes. That being said,
double albums usually sell a lot worse than normal albums because they
are obviously more expensive to buy. Which isn't exactly going to open
the floodgates for potential fans to check the album out on a whim. Now,
regarding the idea of pulling a Guns N'Roses or a Bruce Springsteen by
putting out a double album, but selling them as individual CDs, that
might solve the problem I just mentioned. But it raises an entirely
different issue: namely, how many really good double albums have there
been? IMHO, the cases of GNR and Bruce illustrate the problem of having
several really good songs, and then they are surrounded by mediocre
material. Not to say that DT is even capable of putting out mediocre
material. But it could lend the album to be less focused. Personally, I
would like to see one album of absolutely kick-ass stuff than two albums
containing some kick-ass stuff, and some stuff that I could either take
    or leave. Just my opinion.

Yes. The three best CDs I've bought in the last year are Kevin Gilbert's
Thud, a Stravinsky set, and the new Tool. I've liked aenima since I've had
it, but I just started to really get into it in the past few days. This is
an amazing album...and I think it definitely counts as prog, for song
structures and intelligent lyrics if nothing else. It's heavy, dirty, and
bitter, and just tons better than all the other popular "alternative" type
bands I've heard...drums are pretty awesome, lots of double bass and tom
rolls that make me very happy, the basslines are very melodic, guitars
quite heavy, and the singer's voice has a really neat quality to it that
I've never heard anywhere else. And the cover is soooo cool. I feel like
I'm on acid every time i liik at it.

it doesn't come with lyrics, though, but you can find them at

Prices? I assume $12 if Magna Carta keeps the same way they've been

    Hi there troops!!!

I happened upon that sucky channel MTV the other day when they had the YackLIve crap on and I was stunned to see someone on there with a name of YtseJam333!!! I thought that was pretty cool. Someone mentioned a change in MTV's musical programming - hmmm, I wonder. Anyway it would suck if they did start playing cool s**T because our cable company is dumping the POC (Piece of Crap) next month. I am so sad (sarcasm).

For anyone going to Friday's RUSH show in New Orleans - if you see a tall, skinny guy with long hair and a DT Awake shirt, it's probably me. Don't be scared to say hi!! I am actually kind of scared to go down there as people are getting shot like crazy lately. Wish me well.

    That's all,

    Phillip

To answer your question, the lyrics really have very little effect on my opinion of a song. Back when I used to listen to a lot of Metallica, I used to look up their lyrics all the time and try to figure out what the hell the singer was singing about. Nowadays, on most of the music I listen to, I'd rather not have any singing on it at all. I just have a bigger interest in the music and sometimes it really seems as if the singing is just getting in the way of the music and just cluttering up the piece (this applies to DT and to the other bands I listen to). I remember reading for the first time, that DT at one point a few years ago was thinking about going as an all-instrumental band. Don't I wish. But this all really comes out because *I* have a problem with singing. I find it boring to listen to, I don't like to sing, and I can't understand why other people consider it so important (by the same token, I think classical music is great and I hate opera). I say if a band really wants to write lyrics, they should publish 'em as poems or something (btw, I don't like poetry either). It seems to me there's just no need to tie them into the music produced by a band. To me, it's all about the music, not about the lyrics (the images, not the words:)). I wish more bands would release albums that reflect that attitude and let the instruments take care of the singing.

This turned out to be a bit longer than I expected. It's just something that's been eating at me for a while.

Hey, since you seem to be having trouble getting ahold of good prog, I thought I might try and help out. My first suggestion is mail order. I know, now you ask "where?" Well Syn-Phonic is a really good mail order place (and record label!) Now I cannot tell you anything about their practices, but the guy who got me into DT and Prog in general swears by them. Another way of getting stuff is going directly through the record labels themselves, I know that Magna Carta (Shadow Gallery's label) will do mail order. Each CD is $15.98, just write to them. If you want the addresses to either of these companies, just e-mail me privately and I will send them to you, I am not sure if I am allowed to post them on the Jam or not. Onto your gripe about US audiences... I really hate to say it, but I do think the reason why prog has not caught on is that American music audiences are not as musically intelligent as european listeners. True that some of the popular stuff here is somewhat musically accomplished, but when bands like Genesis (when they were good) are amazingly popular only in europe, you need to start wondering whether or not American listeners have any idea about music. Now my generalization is only involved with the pop area of music. Avenues like Jazz and Classical are untouchable in their true musical power, but I don't see too many Jazz or Classical tunes making their way up any Top 40 charts around me.

In your query about that tune of yours... I first need to know if it was a Prog song, because if it was not , and it was a hard hitting type song instead with pauses covered by talking, it might have been "Liar" by the Rollins Band, headed by Henry Rollins one of the most intelligent writer/speaker/lyricists/publisher/actors out there today. Then again I could be entirely wrong here...

I just wanted to add in my two cents worth about EJ. It is true that he is not as hard hitting or rough as Satch or Vai, but I have to say his guitar work is amazing, expressive and powerful. Just because he doesnt use distortion doesn't mean he is bad, I have heard some classical guitar playing that has mad me weep because of the emotion expressed in it and in the awe of the player's ability. One thing though, before you entirely discount EJ, go pick up his "Ah Via Musicom" album. For me it certainly ranks up there as some of the best guitar work I have ever heard.
