Last night I was once again thrilled by DT, but not without the
usual annoyances that go with good shows.
I noticed that there didn't seem to be nearly as much 'Jammers
as usual. Actually, it seemed there were more fans of cheap beer than
DT. There were about four really bulky *dumb* guys that, right before
DT got on, started charging their way up front. They were the epitome
of crude. They were beyond wasted. They reminded me of a bunch of 14
year olds who after getting their first ever buzz off of a a couple of
beers, decide the next time to see how much they can handle, only to go
way overboard and make fools of themselves. They just kept shouting
FUCK over and over again and making no sense whatsoever. When DT took
the stage, they started hitting people-- not just moshing, but PUNCHING
people in the the back of the head. This infuriated me. I let two
young DT fans (13 & 14) tag along with me for the show and and I had to
get one of them out of the front so he wouldn't get hurt ( and I wasn't
even two feet from the stage too!).
Once I cooled off, I began to enjoy the show. This was my
second "Fix" show so I was already slightly familiar with the new
material. I tried so hard to listen tho the lyrics, but I just couldn't
make most of them out. My favorite is a tie between "Just Let Me
Breathe" and "Peruvian Skies". The intro to "Lines in the Sand" is
quite proggy. On the whole, the new stuff grooves and is very hard-
edged. I also love CIA9ITG! I didn't here anyone else shout "Please
Don't Go" during ACOS. That was kind of disappointing.
Hope all you guys hve a blast at Birch Hill tomorrow!

    - Jon Dery

Btw: Someone talked about a couple of wierd people at the front of the
line. You must of been talking about the two youngsters that I let come
with me. You're right, they were a little immature, but weren't we all
    at that age?!

and if you're interested in that, check out anyone who plays the
Chapman Stick or Warr Guitar. these instruments are designed for
exactly that, the ability to accompany yourself on bass and rhythm
guitar. there are some sound files of my playing on my web page,
    although not great ones.

jordan was in contact with chapman for a while, but was apparently
told by record execs that he needed a more normal looking instrument
if he wanted to get big.

I'm surprised I haven't seen John McLaughlin mentioned yet. He's
my favorite jazz guitarist; _Electric Guitarist_ is a masterpiece. He was
also the leader of the fusion band Mahavishnu Orchestra; their first two
albums (_The Inner Mounting Flame_ and _Birds of Fire_) are really nice. I
think many people who like Dream Theater will like his work. Mahavishnu
Orchestra is closer to rock, but I actually like parts of _Electric
    Guitarist_ better.

Don't tell me to grow up. That was an all-ages show, not just 18+.
The curfew might have been for the people under eighteen (which doesn't
include me). If you really have a problem with that (which I do), blame
the city of Providence and its government for the law in the first place,
or blame the promoters for having too many opening acts, or the second
opening act for playing too long. Don't hold kids responsible; there's no
reason why they shouldn't be able to see Dream Theater also. Put the
responsiblity where it belongs: the promoters, maybe the band for not going
on earlier (or the venue or opening acts). I know what it's like to be
shut out from everything when you're just as big a fan (and even bigger in
many cases) than some of the losers who go to these shows just to drink and
    hang out with their "friends."
Of course, if you were just kidding, don't take the above
personally. I just wanted to clarify something that has been in issue with
    me for awhile.

    Greetings, 'Jammers (tm)...

    Walter inquired:

    >Any jammers have any of Glass Hammer's CDs? I would like to buy their
    >first CD and it has been decribed as sounding like ELP. Also, what do you
    >think about the second album? I hear it sounds different than the first
    >and it is based on the writings of xian C.S. Lewis.

Glass Hammer is one of the more underrated bands out there. I saw them for
the first time in concert earlier this year at Dragon*Con
(sci-fi/fantasy/comics convention). Based on that *one* performance, I
    bought both of their albums.

The first album, "Journey of the Dunadan," is a concept album based on
J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" books. The technology and recording
isn't the best I've heard (had to turn up the volume on my CD player pretty
high to get a decent sound) but the musicianship and songwriting is
EXCELLENT. Lush keyboards, orchestrations, screaming guitars, powerful organ
sounds, and strong bass work, with a narrator providing accompaniment for
some of the tracks, helping to flesh out the storyline. Drums are both
acoustic and electronic, melded together smoothly. Recommended. The vocals
are only average to good, but these guys can PLAY.

The band's second album, "Perelandra," was even better than the first. It's
loosely based on C.S. Lewis's "adult fairy tales" series (_Out of the Silent
Planet_, _Perelandra_, _That Hideous Strength_). The band took advantage of
better technology for this one and it shows. The sound quality is much
better and the mix, which was good on the first album, is even better here.
Glass Hammer manages a very strong keyboard presence (with lots of different
keyboard sounds, some of them layered together to create cool effects) while
still giving the album a harder tinge than the first. The bass guitar has
more punch than on the first album, and the vocals are tighter as well. Most
of the drums are acoustic, though there are some programmed bits here and
there. There are several long songs, "Time Marches On" and "Lliusion" for
example, that have incredible playing almost all the way through. There's
even a neat organ adaptation of Mendelssohn's Fourth Symphony (4th
movement), called "Felix the Cat." Pick this album up *now*. DID YOU HEAR
ME? RIGHT NOW, MISTER!! (and Miss, for the female 'Jammers out there).

Glass Hammer can be contacted by emailing Steve DeArqe (one of the integral
band members) at dearqe111@aol.com, or visiting their webpage at
    http://www.mindspring.com/~dgpow/music/soundresources.htm. If you want to
know more about the band's live sound, albums, or want to find out how to
get one or both of these, let me know!

Just my $.89 (inflation, ya know).

    Cheers,
    Phil

OK. maybe a guitar can provide several ways of evoking emotions and stuff
through different techniques, but keyboards have their advantages as well.
Different patches or sounds, the way patches are programmed, the way somebody
treats each individual patch. Look at Hammond organs alone. They can provide
soft background chords, or you can overdrive the hell out of them and make
them sound just as mean and angry as JP's guitar. I've actually experimented
with distorting the sound of a synth and the results are very crunchy indeed.
There are many ways to approach the mod and pitch bend levers and with ribbon
controllers and touch sensitive strips becoming commmonplace now, more
expression is possible. The instrument alone is not what does it, it's the
person manipulating it. I truely believe that keyboards and guitars are
equal, they have their differences, but they are equal beasts, capable of
rhythm and lead. But, too bad the rest of the world doesn't see things the
    way I do.

You're all misunderstanding my original post.

My main premise here is not to compare guitarists to keyboardists. My gripe
is why keyboardists get the same respect guitarists get.

    Hello Ytseland!
Firday the 13th.. blank Digest (2105)... spooky...

One request: Could you PLEASE mention the record label etc when you
mention some band whose album you've just bought? For example,
I've seen quite many WCIGTR-questions (Where can I get that record?)
Would it be nicer if people wouldn't ask all the time those things?
Well.. At least I'm going to, because here where I live (a small town in
Finland) they don't know anything about some record unless it has
gotten into charts (=techno etc.) in the record store. But if they
knew what label carries the album you're looking for, they could get it.
    At least they would try.

    Ok, sorry about whining.
    Mikko

    Hey guys!

If you haven't checked out Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, you should pick
up one of their albums RIGHT AWAY. Bela Fleck plays acoustic and
electric/synth banjo and he is backed by Victor Wooten on bass and Roy
"Future Man" Wooten on synth-axe drumitar, which is a guitar-looking thing
with drum pads all over it that he uses to play live drum parts.
These guys are not totally jazz, but they're more a progressive
cross between jazz, bluegrass and rock. TO ALL BASS PLAYERS ON THE JAM...if
you haven't heard Vic Wooten, I hate to say it, but he makes Myung look
like a novice. This guy is ridiculous! I'd go so far as to say, overall, he
puts Stu Hamm and Billy Sheehan to shame. He's really melodic and has a
great tone, so check him out. Bela Fleck burns up his electric banjo with
jazz licks as well as many jazz guitarists.
One funny thing about them is that I saw them recently in Hartford
and this guy was getting his picture taken with the bass player. Then a
couple weeks later I saw the same guy sitting on the floor at RUSH. THEN,
last weekend, I saw the same guy again at DT at Toad's place. So these
three bands do have some connection.
If you want to get into them, try their new 2-CD set called "Live
Art." It's got a lot of cool jams and guest artists on it. Or from their
earlier days with Howard "I eat guys like John Popper for Breakfast" Levy
on harmonica and keys, try the album UFO TOFU. It's really cool stuff.
    Later guys!

    -Mike
