Once again, I am responding to a Bafu Vai post. God, wah's wrong wit me?

Bafu, what about classical guitar? Don't classical guitarists spend their
days learning already written material? I am talking about keyboardists in
the rock world, where guitar reins supreme. I can understand why guitarists
are so scrutinized. There's so many of them, and a lot of them imitate what's
already out there. Keyboardists are fewer in number and theerfore, what's to
imitate? There are no keyboard gods like Van halen and Satch. so, you have
almost brought your fate on yourself. Bigger heroes must stand on higher
pedestals. After reading your repost of what I originally said, I understand
how defensive somebody can get, but my whole premise has been stated time and
time again. It's a respect thing. I respect you as a musician, Bafu. I
respect JP, Vai, Van halen, Satch, and I don't know how many other
guitarists. But look at all the substandard people who are idolized by
guitarists. The guy from Bonjovi, for a while when Bonjovi was king, (bleh).
Sorry, guys, he's not all that. Flame me if you want, Bonjovi fans, but the
guy just writes cheesey love balads. Put him next to Vai, and he will be
burried. Helll, put him next to Keith Emerson, and apples or oragnes aside,
Keith will kick his ass on our cheesey instrument. And alternative is full of
substandardism. Just pick up a guitar magazine. outside of the G3 tour, and
the occasion Alex Lipheson story, what do you see? I will bet the top 40
alterna-guitarists. Who is the keyboard world going gaga over? Rap producers
and dance musicians. What has the world come to?

Also for the record, most keyboardists forgo music and learn by ear. It's
easier to learn to read music, because to listen to keyboard parts, which are
usually burried in the mix, and try to learn them exactly is hell on earth.
So, guitar is easier in that respect.

hey y'all. i just thought i'd share a little story with you. i managed
to work in a playing of "eve" during my presentation on music therapy for
my mind-body medicine class. it was well received. i think i made some
converts, although i did have to make it clear that they weren't a
new-age group... anyway, i thought it was good to work in a group that's
    clearly theraputic to me...

just to toss in my 2 bits on the keyboardist discussion, why hasn't
anyone mentioned ray manzarek (of the doors)? sure, he wasn't playing
anything too flashy, but then again, he was also playing the bass lines
at the same time... i was just listening to "riders on the storm" on the
    radio...

finally, hey bafu - i've got a SloppyJoe69 action figure, complete with
"flock of sheep" accessory. what's that worth?

hmm... i think i can go back to lurking for another year or so...

    peace,

guitar and force me to listen to your overdriven, power-chord playing riffs.
Please, oh please. I didn't mean it, I swear. I mean, I'm sorry that you
asshole rock musician guitar types won't let me into your bands so that I can

    >is why keyboardists get the same respect guitarists get.

You know, I think a lot of it has to do with image. Case in point:
there was this guitar contest on KSJO 92.3 here in the Bay Area
a year ago or so. Local guitarists came into the studio and played
some licks and the listening audience would call in and vote. There
was one guy who had a pretty cool tone--- kind of sounded like
Pantera. The only thing was that he kept playing the same thing
over and over and I didn't think he was that great skill-wise. This
girl came in and she was a shred his pants off, IMO; she sounded
like she took lessons from Eddie. But she lost, big time to this
idiot!!! I wanted to call in and say that the audience were all
smoking crack or something because she was *far* better. Only
because he had this cool distorted tone did he win. So much for
    substance over style.

I think it's much the same way with keyboardists; Keith Emerson
notwithstanding, I think that most people respect guitarists more
is that is "the cool thing to do". Kind of like why some women
(present company excluded) like bands simply because they're
attracted to bandmember X (I know someone like this. Sometimes
I wonder if the only reason she likes DT is because KJL is good-
looking). Well, Derek is kind of cute :^|>

And Mikko, thanks a lot for pointing out that it's Fri. the 13th
today! It didn't even occur to me. I'll probably end up in a head-on
at 70mph going down the freeway tonight... Damn drunks.

And I still haven't gotten my DTIFC package yet. Arrghhh!

under control. Hope the show kicks ass, and I wish Rudis/Morganstein were

    Damon M. Fibraio asked,

    >Saw this in a store, want to know what the consensus is on it. Sound quality,
    >overall performance. Forget packaging, I don't care. I would want to play
    >tracks off this on my show if possible. What do you guys think of Mind
    >Control?

Very good boot. It's a soundboard recording of the Japan PPV show. The nice
thing about it is that the instrumental section (which Roks Nads (tm)
something fierce) between LSoaD and The Mirror is all contained on disc one,
as opposed to the way the tracks were split up over two discs on the Wake
Up! boot (same show). The only gripe I have with it is that Mr. Myung's bass
sounds kind of farty throughout most of the disc. I give it a grade of A-.

[OK Heather, you can keep reading now. :-) ]

    Partha commented,

    >heard the song "nothing compares 2 U" by sinead o'conner yesterday....and
    >I LOVE that song.....just thought i'd mention it

Great song. Keep in mind that Prince wrote that song. (His name WAS Prince
    at the time.)

    >(heard madonna's "open your heart" today.....and i like that song too!
    >the 80's pop movement wasn't ALL bad, y'know)......

Ah yes, and don't forget such classics as "Live To Tell", and "La Isla Bonita".

    Brendan beseeched,

    >I wouldn't suppose there's anyone out there who would part with their

    >write me back.

I guess you haven't heard of the much-anticipated boot "Tapestry".

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Another thing Damon mentioned,

    >You're all misunderstanding my original post.

Entirely misunderstood, and the issue's been beaten like the deadest horse
ever. Get OVER it already, people. Jeez.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Mikko whined,

    >One request: Could you PLEASE mention the record label etc when you
    >mention some band whose album you've just bought? For example,
    >I've seen quite many WCIGTR-questions (Where can I get that record?)
    >Would it be nicer if people wouldn't ask all the time those things?

I'm simply grateful the even find out about new and unheard-of bands. I'd
think it would be too much to ask the kind Jam Album Reviewers (JAR tm.) to
include every little detail about a record unless an honest attempt at
finding the album failed. There's more to searching than just going to the
local record store and not seeing a slot for said artist. Here's my tip for
the day: Use the INTERNET to find it. Then, if you still can't find it, ask
for more specificity. There's something to be said for finding things on
    your own. :-)

This brings up my next question. Is Keith Emerson and Derek and Rick Wakeman
and Kevin More and all those guys really respected? In progressive rock and
metal circles, yes they are, but do they get the same respect Eddy Van halen
or Jimi Hendrix, or Clapton or Page get? My guess is no.

The guitar is the rock instrument of choice. Why? What makes guitar so
respected?> And what makes keys so ... disrespected? What is it about these
instruments that causes guitars to be the dominant force in rock. I want to
    know. I don't understand.

For those who might think that my post to bafu was a bit fucked up, I want
to say that I am sorry. Finals are here and I am mentally not in my right
mind, look, i can't even write. It wasn't meant to be taken totally

I was being sarcastic. Yes, I am a bitter musician currently, and I think I

before you flame me for writing such a fucked up post, read this and

i was gonna post something, but i forget. instead i'll draw attention to
the fact that the X-mas CD ROCKS, especially the U2 cover.
we all thanked mr elliot, but theres another group to be thanked... DT
themselves :) i just *know* they read this stuff, hehe, so thanks n stuff
:) seriously, what other band does something this cool for all their fans?
i had been on a kind of a DT recession lately, just cuz i've heard all of it
before and theres so much new out there to check out, but this really
reminded me why i'm on this list.. and i'm sure seeing them in concert (damn
you all who get to see em this year!!:) would refresh that even more. i
also saw the ORIGINAL import not re-release of WDADU yesterday for fifteen
bucks.. i may just have to go pick that up. well, have a good evening or
    whenever you read this :)

    remember: cows R good.

as for the "great controversy", being that i'm decent enough on both
instruments, i'll take a stand here.

the piano is a great compositional device- you get more notes, thus you get
more ideas, and more of a sense of texture with the piano. the guitar, though
limited in its note selection, is wonderful as a chordal friend. easier for
me to create riffs and all that on the guitar. so each has its own merits. i
do not and will not subscribe to the argument that guitarists are stupider,
or keyboardists are whatever- there's extreme examples of brilliant
guitarists, and stupid musicians as a whole- stupidity is not relegated to
instrument. any other input from the other compositional idiots (where's
scott daugherty been, anyway?) would be welcome

as for jazz every ytsejammer should know, i scanned the list someone brought
up, and they mentioned chic, and metheny and al dimeola, which is all good-
but you're missing some FUCKING ESSENTIAL NAMES!!!!!

    how's about coltrane? <aww, shit, i shoulda thoughta dat> the man's soloing
is the reason we got guitarists like jp and steve vay and the snatch boogie!
go fucking listen to "giant steps" and then we'll talk. or "love supreme". or
    "blue trane".

then there's this trumpet-playing guy, his name is miles, i think. i hear he
was REAL good with what he did. he's got this album called "kind of blue"
that like every fucking person this side of the universe should know- it's
like the pinnacle of improv, and it even features the afforementioned
    coltrane.

and lastly, though i myself am still not too too familiar with him myself,
there's this monk character who's got some nifty shit. he plays piano, i
think. though not as flashy as kevin moore or derek, and even though he
doesn't have THE HAIR, i mean he's still pretty good, from what i understand.
i have a "greatest hits" cd that features a good tune called "blue monk", and
i've performed with my band about a billion times another tune called "well
    you needn't".

i mean, there's plenty of other names i could throw, but if you're looking
for jazz, you CANNOT, i repeat, CANNNNNNNNN FUCKING NOT talk about dimeola or
metheny without mention of the big daddys like coltrane or miles.

thank you. enjoy the remaining shows, boys and girls.

    love,
    ytsegoon
