No way, man! I mean, you're right about the most of them, but I love the
Crowes' keyboardist (Eddie some-thing). I really dig Hammond organs, and he
is one of the best Hammond players I've heard. Perhaps not technically, but
he fits right in with the rest of the band. And I can't help it, I just love
the Crowes.

I don't know if they use a drum machine on their recordings, but I DO know
this sucker KICKS ASS playing live. His double bassdrum is really fast. I
can't keep up with him hitting on the table with my hands, so let alone with
my legs (but then again, I'm not a drummer).

Coming from the Turnpike:
from exit 11 (Garden State Parkway), take that to the Parkway South. Get
off at Route 9. Keep going for about 15 minutes. Birch Hill is on your
right about 1/2 mile after the Route 18 overpass.
from exit 9 (Route 18), go down Route 18 South. Follow that until you see
an exit for Route 9 south. The exit is about 20 minutes from when you get
on Route 18. Birch Hill is on the right.
from exit 8 (Route 33), take Route 33 East. Follow the road until you get
to an exit for Business 33 East / Route 9. It will be after a Satellite
store dealership (it has one of those 6 foot dishes on the top -- not hard
to miss). This is about 15 minutes from the TP. Follow Business Route 33
east. You'll eventually see Route 9. It's a fairly large intersection
with a car dealership on the left. Turn left at this light and continue up
Route 9 North. 20 minutes later you'll pass Birch Hill on the Southbound
side. It's one light after McDonald's in the Marlboro Shopping Center.
Take the jughandle to make a U-Turn and Birch Hill is right there.
from exit 7A (Route 195), take this to Route 537 East. You could take this
to Route 9, but you'll be traveling much further. From Route 537 East,
keep following the road until you pass a large shopping mall on your left
(Freehold Raceway Mall -- about 20 minutes away). Go to the next light
that's just past the bridge. Turn right here to go under the bridge.
Follow the signs to Route 9 North. 20 minutes later you'll pass Birch Hill
on the Southbound side. It's one light after McDonald's in the Marlboro
Shopping Center. Take the jughandle to make a U-Turn and Birch Hill is
right there.

The Rudess Morgenstein Project are NOT Einstein. Two completely different
bands. And for those of you who got to see the former, count yourselves
lucky, because I took an Einstein album for a test spin at a local record
store a couple weeks ago and........ I didn't buy it. But I'm funny like that.

That a DT fan might like? Hm. Well, I by no means am a "jazz listener" in
the true sense of the phrase, but I do listen to some stuff that is closer
to Jazz than anything else.
Al DiMeola- I love his older stuff. First pick would be "Elegant Gypsy".
Great songs with lots of "shred", played on a Les Paul and an overdriven
Fender Twin. Smooth. That's the album that got me started on good ole Al.
Next by him would be "Casino", then "Land of the Midnight Sun", and then
"Electric Rendezvous". In that order, I guess. I REALLY don't care for his
newer stuff. I can't remember any of the album titles because I've gotten
rid of any I might've owned. His newer stuff seems to appeal to the "adult"
contemporary jazz community. I don't know how else to describe it, but
there's nothing to catch my ear in the newer stuff. If you like his 70's
work, you might want to know that he used to play guitar with Chick Corea in
the band Return To Forever. Speaking of Chick....
Chick Corea is also popular among Rock fans. In particular, some of his
Electric Band albums really treat my ear right. And they give your need to
hear shred guitar quite a fix. Frank Gambale, sweep picker extraordinaire,
plays on some of those albums. Funny thing...back in my days at the
University of Miami Music School, I remember at guitar player saying, and I
quote, "Frank Gambale? That guy personifies bad taste." -Dan Warner. Well, I
never let that comment lower my opinion of Frank (except for Frank's solo
albums....blecchhh!). The two Electric Band albums that BUUURRRNNN (IMO) are
"Eye of the Beholder" and "Inside Out". They might take a while to really
get into, but once you do, you'll be listening to them for ever. Also, you
drummers should take note of Dave Weckl on these albums. Phenomenal.
John Schofield- He's really popular, but I don't care for his stuff. I don't
know why I feel that way. Maybe I didn't give him enough of a chance. Oh well.
Pat Metheny- Ahh, now that's some great stuff. I love most of what he's
done. Contemporary Jazz that's not cheese. You won't hear in-your-face
shred, but he definitely blows doors with that box and his tone. Outstanding
songwriting, IMO. My personal favorites are "Letter From Home", "Still Life
(Talking)", and "We Live Here". These albums listed are some of his more
recent works, dating back to about '89. Some of his older stuff is less
"contemporary" sounding, with a bit more of a jazz sound. From that era, I
really like the self-titled, "Pat Metheny Group", which has the classic tune
"Phase Dance". And if you eventually find you like music with a bit of an
ambient quality to it, I recommend "As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita
Falls". That actually was my first ever taste of Pat Metheny. Definitely not
for the first-time listener. It took me a LONG time to get into that album,
but now, I think it's my favorite. Only the title track is semi-ambient (all
20 minutes of it). The rest is very melodic, with lots of piano/synth sounds
to make the sound a bit more dense. Keep an eye out for track 4: "It's For
You"....it makes me melt.
Mike Stern- Jazz Fusion 100%. I recommend "Upside Downside" and "Time In
Place" for starters. Excellent songs with a Rock edge and burning guitar. I
once saw his band play at a restaurant/club called the Iron Horse in
Northampton, Mass. Man....I thought he was good...but not THAT good. His
live playing was unbelievable that night and gave me even more respect for him.
Alan Holdsworth- Although I never really got into him, Jazz and Rock guitar
players alike enjoy his music greatly. A friend once recommended "Metal
Fatigue" to me, but I never got around to checking it out. Probably worth a
listen.
Scott Henderson- Another Jazz-Fusion player along the lines of Mike Stern.
He plays (or played, I'm not quite sure) in a band called Tribal Tech, which
is very popular among Rock/Jazz oriented guitar players. I've heard their
stuff once at a party and it sounded pretty cool. He also plays on the first
Chick Corea Electric Band album, which is self-titled.
Well, that's basically how wet my feet have been and still are with respect
to Jazz and Jazz Guitar. If you grow to really dig that stuff, maybe more
traditional Jazz is also in your liking. I've found it to really be an
acquired taste for Rock-oriented listeners to get into. Give it time, and
maybe you'll have opened a whole new door of musical enjoyment for yourself.

Well, once again, an incredible concert... Lets see... we got to the
Strand at about 6:30 or so, so we ended up in an incredible
location... a few were 2nd row center stage, and I was 1st row in
front of Derek stage left, leaning on the stage... The opening acts
were awful. Einstein wasn't quite as bad, but the singer screamed
mostly instead of singing. The others were barly tolerable to me...
the lead singer was totally screaming... at one point towards the
end, she asked if people wanted to hear a jazz song instead of a rock
song... I was hopeful at this point, but it was barly different from
the other songs they did. I also hate them for another reason, which
I will get to later on in this message...
Anyway, DT was about ready to come on, and unfortunatly, some dumb ass
ended up right behind me... kept on talking all this BS like he knew
everything.. I was dreading what he was going to be like during the
show... Anyway. the curtains lifted, to the cool intro that they have
for ACOS, and everyting was great... The bass in the mix might
actually have been too high, you could finally hear everything Myung
played. Derek had on his YtseCon II shirt, and during Another Hand/
Killing Hand, he noticed my shirt, the origional Ytsejam shirt, which
looks fairly similar in the front... he looked down at the logo on
his shirt, looks at the logo on mine, then points down to the logo on
his again... I cracked up for nearly 5 mins at the point... During
Mirror/Lie, someone by us was really acting up shoving and everyting,
and decided he wanted to make it up on stage, so everyone around us
gave him a hand, and we nicly were able to get rid of him... At one
point, I think after Pull Me Under, people were crowd surfing and
being annoying in general, and the security guards actually pulled
them up on stage to take them away... At that point, James just looks
over at them, and starts waving good-bye, and I think everyone in the
front row was cracking up... As far as the rest of the set list
goes, I beleive it was the same as Toads... but here comes the really
shitty part, and the reason that I hate the opening acts... Because
they went on for soooo long, DT didn't have a chance to come on to
play Metropolis for the encore :( The curtains closed, and we were
waiting, when the lights come on and the security guards start telling
us to leave for the lobby... James and Mike came out and appoligized
for it, said it was beyond their control, and said that they would
make it up to us later on... (in other words, be at the Strand the
next time that they play there)
Lets see... new tracks... I really like how all of them sounded
after hearing them a 2nd time... Alot of them are heavier than some
stuff on I&W, but not as heavy as Mirror/Lie... I was really trying
to get some of the lyrics, but can't really remember too much of
them... The only one that really didn't impress me too much was Lines
In The Sand, but I think that that is because I didn't hear it
enough...
Anyway, I've rambled enough for now... I should get going to a full
weekend of programming for an Operating Systems final due Monday...

Hey, Bafu, I got (count 'em), two Andrew Miller action figures, both highly collectable and they don't even look like the same guy! Amazing, I bet your GI Joe guys couldn't do this!
I like to take my Bafu Vai (2nd edition, with weapon cache accesory) and have him gun down all the other action figures who oppose him. I've also got a Mojoman and Mithrandir action figure, and these are very collectable since they don't make em anymore.

Derek is using the korg trinity keyboard for the new album (i read that in a korg magazine) and derek endorses korg. i bought a trinity over the summer, and it is one kick ass keyboard. it has two sounds on it called "Dream Theatre" and "Metropolis." i was just wondering if even though they mispelled dream theater that these two sounds are from the band or what. does anybody have any idea?

One absolutely cannot say that a keyboardist/pianist is a better musician than the guitarist. It is simply not the case. It's like saying a brain surgeon is a better surgeon than a cardio surgeon...they are two different areas of specialization.
However, at the non-professional you and me level, I'd give keyboardists the upper hand - why? One word: TABLATURE!
Keyboardists for the most part learn how to read music and learn musical structure etc...any Joe Blow can learn to play guitar with tablature and totally ignore the musicianship altogether. I am a case in point. I have been playing guitar for 10 years...I'm not exactly a great player, but I love to dabble...I can read music - I learned by taking courses in school, but I don't practice reading music and I am really slow...but hey, with all of the guitar mags out publishing tunes with tab, I can cheat!
Guitar is much more accessible for someone who just wants to dabble with music without becoming a musician. If you want to debate keyboardists vs. guitar in terms of musicianship, you had better define musicianship first. Ie, I am a guitar player, but I am no musician...

Well, I finally have recovered enough to post about the show last night. Firstly, I'd like to apologize to anyone who was looking for me at Trinity before the show because I never ended up getting there. :) I got caught in traffic, and then was stuck waiting for someone who was bringing a ticket for someone else, yadda yadda yadda....
On a positive note, DT kicked my ass all over the Strand for the 3rd time. I must say, this time, they *really* looked like they were having fun up there. The new stuff rocked, the crowd was pumped about TKH and Ytsejam (it suprised me how much of the crowd was into the first album stuff...a lot of casual DT fans I know aren't even aware of WDADU).
But, for the second straight year, I missed out on an encore because of an opening act. Last year, it was the legendary "Pleasure-Crush-at-El-En-Gee's" incident; this year it was "Let's-add-the-Beth-Hart-Band-to-the-bill". Because of the 2 opening acts, DT didn't get on stage until just before 11:00. Unfortunately, RI has some sort of law that required the show to end on or about 1:00. So all us lucky attendees didn't get to hear Metropolis. James did come out and apologize, while pointing out that it was not their fault. He promised they'd make it up to us, and I for one plan to hold them to that. :)
All-in-all though, a totally killer performance. I *love* all the new songs, this album should be a killer. Derek really seems to add a different "sound". I noticed several times that his signature is firmly implanted on the songs now, and that's a good thing. I already can't wait for the *next* show......

Hey guys my name is Lucas Guarino. I'm a Boston University student from NJ. As you probably know I am new to this discussion but have been a DT fan for about a year now. Well enough of that, On to important things. I can't believe that Damon and Bafu are arguing over the superiority of instruments. Each compliments the other when used properly ie any DT cd. Yet to say that one musician is more skilled than another is to say that a poet is more skilled than a novelist or a realist painter more skilled than a sculptor. This is barbaric (why can't we all just get along :) ? ) Each instrument deserves respect. This superiority due to powerchords complex must be dealt with, however. There are guitarists out there who have absolutely no skill and the blind media public enjoys their music. I have never understood why but that is not the issue. It is unfair, however, to say that all guitarists and the instrument itself requires less skill to play because of this. If the mass public rejected these power chord imposters than they would not be successful and would therefore be banished to the poser dimension never to be heard from again. Keyboardists however can take a few synths and some triads and sound decent just like a guitarist with power chords can. Yet the general public is not as hooked on keyboard music (although they should be) as they are on guitar. Therefore, I believe that both instuments are equally difficult and the reason that guitarists are being bashed is due to the mass public acception of half ass poser imposters who should be silenced forever. Whooo! This concert kicked my ass SO HARD, I won't be walking right for WEEKS! It ruled... I shouldn't really bother with a setlist, since they've been posted enough (and I'm sure they will continue to be posted), and rest assured, ALL the songs kicked hard... just a few thoughts though:
Providence was designed by Satan. When he was drunk. We had no idea where the hell we were (came in from Route 6), and decided to just take a random exit in the downtown area. Turns out we were only a block away! Lucky us... We got lost on the way back too, but that's because no one in the car could hear.
The Strand is an awesome place! Lots of room, and good sight lines! I could stand back far enough to avoid the crush, yet see perfectly clearly! Well worth the ticket price. Go to concerts there if you can. It's the first time I ever saw the actual instructions to moshing posted on a door to a club... The backdrop behind the band was neat too, kind of an Awake cover type thing. Very good...
I particularly enjoyed watching the opening act's drummers and their pathetic excuses for sets being completely over-shadowed by the looming monolith that was Mike's set... mmm... big...
I think I was standing amongst Jammers, but I didn't say anything (duh). Anyway, I was on the right-hand stairs, right next to the sound board and light board. There were two guys with YtseJam t-shirts standing in front of me, slightly down the stairs. We were all annoyed, it seemed, at all the people trying to walk by us all the time. You'd think we were standing... on the stairs.. or something.. I was wearing a UConn hat and my ACoS shirt.
They didn't get to play Metropolis. I was pretty pissed. Of course, they didn't go ON until after 11:00. That kind of sucked, but it was worth it! At least I didn't have to stand around outside or anything. People with tix just walked right in.
Anyway, that's my little review. I have to go put some ice on my head or something. I haven't been beaten THIS savagely in some time!
