ANNOUNCEMENT--MOVE STATUS
Ytsejam finally has a tentative move status. Please read
these announcements--you *WILL* have to resubscribe to the
new list and if you ignore the messages you'll probably find
yourself ytsejamless. And you wouldn't want to miss your
daily allotment of Bafu Vai or the Bahr Scorpion Chronicles,
would you? :)
Feb 5 Subscription instructions will be sent out
Feb 7 Subscriptions will be accepted at the two new
addresses.
Feb 12 ytsejam@arastar.com will start forwarding to the
Anarchy-X list, people who have not resubscribed at
Anarchy-X will stop receiving Ytsejams. (Backlog
queue at Arastar Consulting will be moved to
Anarchy-X at which point 3-5 Ytsejams will probably
be generated, torture-testing the new site.)
Metropolis will also start at that time.
May 15 ytsejam@arastar.com will stop forwarding mail to
Anarchy-X and will be replaced with a bot that
tells users where to find ytsejam.
So watch for the next announcement on Monday. If you have
questions concerning the move, send them although I probably
won't have time to answer them until after that announcement
goes out.
If you want to check out Anarchy-X and have telnet capabilities,
try telnetting to bbs.ax.com and use the login "guest". I think
there's also a web page at http://www.ax.com/

Mr. Serious, I appreciate your critique of James voice, but this is still rock and roll we're dealing with. I'll admit that I do not have your credentials behind me....but I have dealt with alot of musicians in my life and know a few things about what singers have to deal with in a live situation. Any classically trained tenor who is truly in love with his voice tends to steer clear of rock. In live situations, rock singers are forced to deal with an extremely difficult sound environment. On stage sound monitors can only go so far in clearing up the sound environment. Rock musicians are forced to deal with odd echo effects from the PA reverberating through the hall, the screaming of fans, their own sound monitors screwing up, the strain of performing on a nightly basis...and a thousand other extraneous problems. In other words, comparing singers from operatic or even Broadway musical backgrounds to rock (especially prog rock and/or heavy metal) singers is more than a little bit like comp aring apples to oranges. True, classical training can help overcome some of the problems...but even those who do have classical training (such as Geoff Tate) tend to have alot of problems during tours. Also...as a fan I feel that sometimes classical training can rob a voice of its honesty and its originality. You might not agree with that....it's my own opinion, and we are each entitled to our own opinions. I am just sick of James bashing. As to his "greatness"....I would really be interested in knowing who YOU are comparing him to. I think that his voice enhances Dream Theater's prescence...on stage as well as in the studio. I do hope, that as a musician, he continues to work on his craft. But I would expect that out of anyone.

I think, to handle such situations, DT needs to write a song that is short, like three and a half minutes long, incredibly complex (to make up for the lost time), and really rocks.
That's right, just like Gentle Giant.

I'm gonna waste some bandwidth to give a big thanks to Brian Cox for organizing the tape tree. It sounds like a lot of work, and he really isn't getting a damn thing in return like most jammers that undertake projects like these. Oh what the hell, a big thanks to others who have done things for the Ytsejam. On an individual level, we've all probably done things to help out another 'jammer (or other DT fans we might know who are not on the 'jam), but these people seem to want to do something for the 'jam on a grand scale.
We do go above and beyond for other DT fans. If you ever saw someone on the street wearing a Metallica t-shirt, you probably don't think twice about him or her, even though you may love Metallica as much as the next guy. But when you meet another DT fan, chances are, you probably end up becoming friends with them before long.
Look for me on IRC. I'm E-Man.

Hello everyone,
This is regarding Edward Ju's posting on Jason Becker (Digest 1236). I too got a letter from Jason and ordered the cd and t-shirt. Being that I have everything of his so far I can vouch for Edward saying you owe it to yourself to listen to him. At least check out David Lee Roth's "A Little Ain't Enough" cd since Jason played on it. But his first cd, "Perpetual Burn" is a must have. He also played with Marty Friedman in Cacophony and did some guest solos on Dragon's Kiss (one of Marty's solo cds). He also redid a Bob Dilon song on Guitar for the Practicing Musician Vol. II (Meet Me In the Morning).
Well hope everyone gives his stuff a try. I'll post what I think of Perspectives when I receive it. Bye.
Seize the day! Irene

What's up jammers,
When someone asks me what type of music I like, I always say progressive rock, and then they say -- What's progressive rock? What does progressive mean? I know what I think progressive rock is, but how do you explain it to someone who has no knowledge of it. Can someone please come up with a good definition of progressive rock so that I can use it in the future to explain to people what it is?
Thanks a lot! ROB (GuitarM16@aol.com)
P.S. - BTW, please send in your vote to me for which band sounds the most like dream theater. I want as many people as possible to respond to this. I will post the results in about a week or so. Thanks a lot!! LATER!

Well, we can add two new people to the DT Fan Population. I was sitting in my car having lunch (hey, that's where the tunes are!) and (as usual) cranking Awake. These two guys walked past just as The Mirror was beginning. They went a little further, then stopped and turned around. They said "who is that, I gotta buy it!". I told them and they went on their way.
It just goes to show you,

Dear Dave (or whoever reads these),
I would like to request the band Dream Theater as the musical guest for an upcoming show. They are groundbreaker in the new movement of progressive artists in the music world. They are highly talented (several went to Berkeley School of Music) and have 4 fantasitc releases to date. Please consider them for a future show. Thank you for your time!

To all Ytsejammers- You know, I just got done sending a message to the Late Show. I'm not sure how it will all work out, but I think we are doing a great thing for Dream Theater. If is doesn't pull through, at least David Letterman and crew and the Late Show will know the name Dream Theater. That's a start. As far as I'm concerned, however, I would LOVE to see the boys on stage in the Good 'ol Ed Sullivan theater. Congrats, Ytsejammers on a job well done.

I think it probably is a good idea to wait until DT is promoting an album to petition the Letterman show. It would just be more practical for both parties involved, and it would be more likely that we get some action. Conan is a good idea for the present time, though. Conan has nothing to lose. Maybe we should just get Conan's address.
What songs could they play? Here are some TV-friendly possibilities:
Another Day 6:00 Innocence Faded Caught In A Web The Silent Man <new electric version> Lie <radio/MTV edit> A Change of Seasons <JOKE!!!> To Live Forever
Yeah, I know, I know: with the exception of AD and the Lie edit, they're still a litte long, but I think 4-5 minutes is a reasonable length of thime for a band to play. Especially since the show with them on it would be honoring a third party's request. Who knows? Maybe the new material will be grunge?

Hey 'jammers!
My copy (#77) of WDATU came in the mail today, and I'm listening to it for the second time as I type this. Since this is the first time I've ordered one of Mr. Bahr's projects without hearing from other people first, and since I always appreciated hearing others' comments about his CDs, I'll make some brief comments here.
First of all, the main reason I ordered this was to get another copy of Only a Matter of Time, and it is done pretty well and with decent quality, so this CD is already a winner in my book. 8^)
But I'm getting ahead of myself. If bandwidth will allow, I'll comment on each track. Keep in mind that my comments on quality come from someone who usually shies away from boots, and are purely subjective; YMMV.
1) A Fortune In Lies: The first thing I notice about this track is it seems awfully slow, but that may be because I'm used to WDADU, where they speed it up significantly. Acceptable quality, although it doesn't really matter since we all have LatM anyway (I can't help but laugh when James says "Euphoria").
2) Get Funky/Status Seeker: I don't particularly like this song, and I wouldn't be surprised if Mr. LaBrie doesn't either, as it doesn't fit his vocal style at all. I always thought singers might feel some pain when hitting high notes, but James sounds in pain as he tries to bring his voice down to Charlie's level. Oh well, it's precluded by a pretty cool jam.
3) Ytsejam: Yes. Now I don't have to go to the TV and watch LiT to hear a modern version of The Song. This is excellent quality, and is almost worth the price of admission itself.
4) The Killing Hand: Better than LatM, IMHO. James' voice is right on, and the quality is excellent (damn, I'm listening to this right now, and James' voice is _ON_. He can really impress me sometimes).
5) Light Fuse and Get Away: The worst quality track on the album, which is too bad since this is another one my favorites from WDADU. I'd comment on it if I could even hear it.
6) Mission Impossible/Afterlife: This is kind of a cool rendition of MI, and James gives some respectability to Afterlife; I think I like this version better than the one on WDADU.
7) The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun: Unfortunately, no long keyboard intro, and the quality is very poor. The performance is good, but I always have a hard time getting past poor quality.
8) Only a Matter of Time/March of the Tyrant: OaMoT is one of my all-time favorite Dream Theater songs, and although I think I still prefer the one on WDADU, this isn't too bad. Actually it has some minor differences that make me glad I have both renditions (one example is the cool instrumental at the end).
9) To Live Forever/Moon Bubbles/Showdown: My LiT video may be getting jealous, because this along with Ytsejam may not give me much reason to watch it anymore. Good quality, and very similar to LiT, except that there's another instrumental tacked on after JP's solo.
In short, I'm very happy with this disc. Considering how rarely they play these songs, I was pleasantly surprised to find only two recordings of substandard quality. The rest are more than adequate, and there's enough subtle differences (besides the obvious improvement in the vocals) to make me value this disc as much as, or more than, the original WDADU.
As always, great job Mike. Keep it up! And my sincere apologies for the length. There's a couple other notes I'd like to make about some songs, but I'll save it for another day.
Happy 'jamming!

"My Condescending Additude" is an accurate depiction of your entry on 1235. I think Mark is entitled to his harmless opinions no matter how redundant you may think they are. Your masters is a great accomplishment, but it doesn't make your opinions any more valid to someone with different views. I know where your where your coming from and some of your points are valid. But just as some on the jam have inverted your sphere, I take issue with your comments on Labrie. I have no idea what your credentials are outside of the classroom, but are you vocalist yourself? Have you ever performed technically challenging vocals 6 days in a row for over a year on a World Tour? Under all the pressures and obsticals touring entails? I've edited my original entry because the list was to long! Let me say that James is not a god, but he is not a machine either. He is only human. Even when he is not feeling up to par, he still gives it everything he's got. And my opinion is that he has developed into a great talent, CLASSICALLY TRAINED OR NOT..
To conclude, If you have done all he has then I stand corrected, but I doubt it. Because if you had you wouldn't be so concerned about poor diction or vocal control. You'd be to busy trying to catch your breath.

I strongly disagree with the who said "Rush was a watered down version of themselves only playing to an ALTERAHEAD croud." Presto is one of my favorite Rush albums. Nonetheless, what really got to me was the fact that he called Rush "symphonic" and implied that they were one of the leading Progressive bands. again, I must disagree. All British music aside, have you ever heard any _real_ Symphonic Progressive? by bands like PFM, , Le Orme, Il Balletto di Bronzo, Banco, Deux Ex Machina, Osanna, and Il Berlione? even mid 70s Genesis had that "Symphonic" style. heck, Yes sounded Symphonic compared to Rush of all bands. Really, Rush were just an incredibly talented pre-metal band with some Progressive leanings. Now, I don't want to debate this here, but if you want, I'll gladly answer all emails and messages posted on rec.music.progressive about the matter.

I'm surprised the new Tori album hasn't been mentioned here yet! a year ago the whole entire list loved her.:)
Anyway, Boys for Pele is great, and she now plays a harpsicord! great stuff!
One last comment. I awlays get the feeling that most of you guys really know little about early prog bands. it seems that you feel that Kansas and Rush were some of the definitive prog bands of the 70s and that isn't the case at all. most readers of rec.music.progressive feel Rush is an overpopular metal band and Kansas was too fake-prog and commecial at the same time to be consitered a prog great. Those who haven't experienced the excitment and beauty of such great prog albums like Genesis's _Selling England by the Pound_ or King Crimsons' _Larks Tongues in Aspic_ really haven't experienced what Prog is all about. (and even then, these two albums are really unrepreesntive of prog.)

To the fellow that said he is surpised that DT isn't mainstream yet...... (This is not meant as an insult or deragatory) Actually, DT will probably never be put on the radio or much of MTV, if that is considered mainstream. BUT, I did see Awake I&W and ACoS in Columbia House's music selection, and they only purchase the stuff that sells well. So I do believe a larger following is growing. BTW, I also saw Fates Warning in their, needless to say I was a little stunned when I saw those 2 bands in there. l8r Rob
