    POSTING RESTRICTION
Posting to the ytsejam mailing list is now restricted to
subscribers. This will not affect the majority of you, but if you
run into problems when trying to post to the list, please contact
ytsejam-owner@arastar.com and Jason, Ryan, or I will help you.

(This was done because SpAmKiNg just tried to post another
advertisement to the list (again) under yet another faked address.)

    YTSEJAM T-SHIRTS
Trey's shirt order deadline's almost here so if you want a new
Ytsejam shirt, you better order it soon. (I'm looking forward
to getting mine to go along with my Awake and Jason Giles
            DT Shirts :)

Jason Giles's Ytsejam (the black one with white lettering that
you've probably seen at concerts and at Ytsecons) will be
available as long as Jason can get 30 or more orders in. The
announcement follows. If you'd like to see this shirt in a
color other than black, let Jason know and he'll probably
consider making a forest green, maroon, or deep blue batch.

High all, I had a couple things I wanted to pass by you:

    (1) Is there interest in any more DT shirts from the same artwork batch? If you don't know what I'm talking about, check them front and back artwork on my web page at: www.crl.com/~jgiles/shirts.html In quick summary: Front has the majesty symbol with the words Ytsejam Internet Mailing List on the left breast... about 2" x 2". the back has a 7" wide DT logo, with the words "Let the Light Surround You" in glow in the dark greyish ink. All on black shirt, 100% cotton. They're about $14.00. Should I do another order?

[Jason needs at least 30 shirts ordered in order to do this, so send your orders in now :) -- kbibb]

    (2) I am open to new designs for new shirts, so long as they are not too complicated. Give me suggestions.

Well, that's all for now, thanks for listening! Comments, cliches, controversy, chatter, chit-chat, criticism to me at: jgiles@crl.com

    later,

LIMITED EDITION COMPACT DISCS Information and Update, Current to 2/2/96

    Hi There,

I just wanted to let you all know about the progress I'm making. First of all, I *think* the title will be 'Carpe Diem - LIVE will not allways be this way'. Why? Because many people mailed me saying 'Carpe Diem' was the best title and a LOT of people mailed saying the 'LIVE.....' was the best title.

So, I just combined the two :) People can allways refer to is as CDL or some- thing like that. If somebody thinks he/she has a better title, please e-mail me, the title is not final yet!

    PROGRESS :

As for the progress, I'm currently remastering the recording (with some really cool equalizers and denoisers and stuff like that) and I'm working on the booklet, what is turning out to become really really beautiful! There will be live shots (from the 'Bospop' festival itself) made by a professional photographer (sp?) and some other related stuff, all FULL color of course :)

    PAYMENT & SHIPPING :

I think the shipment of the cd's will start the beginning of April. I still have to sort out all the different postage prices, but when I'm done doing that I'll post a message to the 'Jam with all the info about payment etc... This will happen in about a week or two.

    LIMITED EDITION NUMBERS :

If people want specific numbers (they're all gonna be handnumbered), there's no problem at all. I will *try* to help everybody get his/her favorite number.

Well, I guess that's about it for now. I'll let you all know if there's new information about the project.

    What's up jammers,

When someone asks me what type of music I like, I always say progressive rock, and then they say -- What's progressive rock? What does progressive mean? I know what I think progressive rock is, but how do you explain it to someone who has no knowledge of it. Can someone please come up with a good definition of progressive rock so that I can use it in the future to explain to people what it is?

    Thanks a lot! ROB (GuitarM16@aol.com)

P.S. - BTW, please send in your vote to me for which band sounds the most like dream theater. I want as many people as possible to respond to this. I will post the results in about a week or so. Thanks a lot!! LATER! [Please send these to GuitarM16@aol.com and NOT to the list! -- kbibb]

John used his Ibanez USA Custom with the Picasso graphic to play the intro to The Mirror live. He barred the B chord at the second fret like normal, but he added in the low F# (fifth) to add the extra chunk like this :

Funny someone mentioned Iron Maiden lately. A friend of mine back home told me that Iron Maiden will be playing at Birch Hill with Fear Factory opening up. Date is Feb 20th. Tickets are $12.50.

<Sigh> I remember the days when IM used to sell out 20K seat venues. I don't think BH will be able to host a setup like what was on the Powerslave tour nor a 9ft walking Eddie...

Hi you people with discerning taste in music,

I've been lurking around on the jam for a while but I've never posted before, but now I feel I need to thank all the jammers for answering all of my questions via private email. Thanks!!!!! Now on to DT stuff, I'd love to see DT on David Letterman, but I do agree that many (OK all) of DT's songs are too lengthy to be played on such a small part of the show, but what if DT composed a new (shorter, but still DT) song specifically for the show. This would provide a large amount of marketable hype for the show, create a new source for Bahr's boots, and give every DT fan an orgasmic experience. If DT can improvise a song for every (or most) live shows, then they can surely write a song for Davey, besides it would give Derek a chance to defend himself from a compositional standpoint from all of these (rather unfair IMO) accusations that he sucks just because he is not Kevin Moore. I saw Derek perform live on the Awake tour and I thought Kevin had just gotten a haircut! Mozart could crawl out of his grave and take Kevin's place and people would still say that he is not as good as Kevin Moore. Get over it!!!! DT was moving in a more string oriented idiom anyway (look at the differnce between Metropolis and Lie). Also, to those people who are flaming trendy three chord songs such as Breakfast at Tiffanies, remember that music is art as well as mathamatical relationships. If a thought or emotion can be conveyed in one chord, does that diminish the beauty of the song? I think not. As a prog fan I know how hard it is not to trash people who trash prog as "self-indulgent tonal masturbation completely lacking in heart or soul and relying solely on memorized formulas and the permutations thereof". Those people are ignorant of the beauty of prog, but so are the prog fans who trash three chord feel-good music ignorant of the beauty of three chord feel-good music. Music is not a contest or an absolute measure of worthiness, it is an art and a science, but the cold sterility of science should NEVER outway the creativity and heart of the music. Remember the next time you trash Green Day or Coolio or Garth Brooks as simple mindless drivel, that they are making money with what they love and their music is touching the hearts and minds and imaginations of millions of people. What gives you the right to put down their artistic liscence of a beautiful and evolving artform? sorry to be such an overblown windbag, but i just had to get that off my chest. One question, does anyone know if John Myung has ever done a bass solo? (I'm a six-stringer and would love to see John cut loose and wail) Thnax for listening and everyone who doesn't like the music on the radio, START A BAND!

    >Did John Petrucci have his 7-string on the Music in Progress tour?

Greetings everyone. My name is Andreas Darmawan, but just call me Andrew. I'm from Indonesia, it's one of the asian countries just in case if you don't know.

Yes, I'm new on this list. Well not too new exactly, I've been following the mailing list since new year. I'm a big Dream Theater fan, AWAKE was my wake up call. To tell the truth, I'm jealous to all of you who had watch DT concerts. Maybe I'll have one when I'm already in US this fall.

I play in a band in the lead-guitarist position. We play all DT songs incl all solos. Our biggest problems are Metropolis & Take The Time. Those songs were really pain in the ass.

This time I would like to answer Matt's question. Petrucci didn't use a 7-string, he was using his custom Ibanez (the usual 6-string). Just pause the video if you don't believe me. The f**k, chopping, (I don't know how to say it) sound was the result of JP's 2 Mesa/Boogie Triaxis that runs together. Anyway just set your amp like this : Bass : 4.5 Middle : 5.0 Trebble : 5.5

First, press your temollo hard till some steps down and make the low strings shake. Then release the tremollo slowly to produce the long, weird sound.

The Mirror : it's a usual B chord. Just barre the 2nd fret and add F# on 4th string. Then sound it (with palm-muting, of course). You'll get the sound if you have the right distortion amp. I use a Mesa/Boogie V-Twin with a Jackson King-V Pro (w/ Seymour Duncan JB) and it just sounds great. If you want to get the same sound as JP's, go get yourself $2800 and buy 2 Triaxis, OK?

Well, gotta go now. If anyone would like to discuss or ask for advices or ask how to play DT's songs (tricks, tips, solos, etc) just e-mail me at : ilsjkt@indo.net.id I would be very greatful to answer DT mania questions.

    Hi Jammers!

Yes! after "Lurking" for 4 full months I finally have a post :) I met some of you before the El 'N' Gees (1st show). Jason, can you email me Jens Johansson's email address? Well, I got an internet account right after Mike Bahr's Subconscious Cd Sold Out :( Oh Well. But I did get AD #121 & WDATU #33. Great jobs on both Discs. The cover on WDATU was very professional.

I've been tie up with the Van Halen Mailing List because they don't put their messages in digest format, so I have to weed through the Bull! My VH collection is very big and all that is out there is new stuff, which is all the same set lists.

I'm trying to build my DT audio collection with some rare shows. I have a 1st generation copy of Dream Theater's Last Awake Show at the Strand, RI (8-3-95) recorded from a DAT player. My friend, who makes me copies of certain shows I request (I supply the tapes), recorded the show on his DAT. I haven't seen this show on people's lists so, I like to trade my only show that I believe many you do not have for some DT boots (2 tapes).
