Okay, the subject might sound confusing... but let me explain:
I just bought a new DT bootleg CD (quite cheap, for 15DM ($10)):
The cover just says "Dream Theater", on the back there`s a little note:
"Live in the USA", so I was quite surprised when I listened to the CD
and found out that it`s just another copy of the Saitama 1/24/95 show
(actually it`s not the whole show `cause it`s just one CD...).

Hello everyone, it's BABS. Yes, Scott is right on this one. Anyone who
wasn't around for this time, check it out. It's a piece of Americana. I
recently caught their MTV Unplugged gig and it was really fantastic. The
best part was when they were joined by Peter Criss (my personal favorite) and
Ace Frehley on stage. I think that their hopping onto the nostalgia kick is
pretty cool, kind of like a swan song for them - although I have a gut
feeling that those costumes are going to need to be let out a little in the
seams. Trust me I know, it's happened to me :P

Ytsejamers,
I've been on this list for about two years now and I haven't written
much but I have ejoyed being a part of the ytsejam community. I've been a
dream theater fan for about 4 years and have enjoyed every thing I've heard by
them including Mike Bahr's boodlegs and some of the other various bootlegs
that are out there. I'm from the Rochester area and I go to school at
SUNY Fredonia which is about 35 min south west of buffalo. Durring my time
here at fredonia I have been exposed to a great deal of new music, and one of
the local bands that I was turned on to is Without Warning. They record in
Japan under the Zero lable and I have to admit that I am very impressed with
their music. One day I decided to read the liner notes and came to realize
that they have recieved some help from Dream Theater, in particular John
Petrucci. It was great to see DT helping out a smaller band. If anyone knows
of any other bands that are endorsed by Dream Theater I would love to hear
about them because I love listening to new music and It seems that Dream theater
has great taste in music. If anyone would like to know more about Without
Warning I would be happy to give them some more information and even make

I must say that Ken Bibb is doing an outstanding job of moderating the

Ahhh. So that's why you never know what the words are until you look on the
inside cover. Personally, I like that because I never remember them so I can
just sing along whatever I want. Know would know because LaBrie has that way
of sluring paragraphs together :).
BTW, this isn't a slam of LaBrie. Like many others, I think he's a great
vocalist. My very first impression of him (from Awake - the first album I
got after WDADU) was that he was a strong vocalist and it was refreshing to
hear a great rock vocalist. But he does slur those words :).

No, he used a 6 string on The Mirror intro to Take The Time. If you take a
regular bar chord on the A string, second fret (sorry-I don't know the names

Progressive music as I see it has proven to be one of the fastest
developing fields of music. But it's listeners still pay attention to older
things. I am a huge Rush fan, one of their concerts changed my life. Yes,
King Crimson and DT have all proved to be Progressive giants. Despite
this, Progressive has a lack of attention because (as one person put it) "It
takes too much thought." And as another person mentioned, people find it
self-absorbed. (I agree 23:06 is a fairly long song, but still awesome)
What of Beethoven? Sony developed CD players just so you didn't have to
flip the tape when listening to his 9th symphony. Anyway, it's not a crime
to be self absorbed, is it? Maybe in the Soviet Union of the 80's it is,
but not here in the USA. Progressive is an ignored form of music
because of the features that distinguish it. It has an image problem that
prevents many from turning to one of the most creative and powerflu forms of
art. Let's not lose our listeners to rap, pop and dance music favored by
the general public. This is a real art form, not some kind of fad. We need
to establish that. Dream Theater has done it's part, and so have the other
legendary bands that have shaped progressive rock. It's our turn now.

Hi everyone,
Okay, I know this thread has kinda died down, but something just occurred to
me. Someone mentioned that the biggest reason why DT doesn't play stuff off
of WDADU is because not very many are familiar with them (which BTW is what
John P told me when I asked him if they'd play anything off WDADU that night -
Nov 4 94).
While I understand that, I must mention that no-one (including us 'jammers) is
familiar when they extend a song, add a new intro or play a new instrumental -
not that I'm complaining. I love all the stuff you can only hear at a
concert, BUT I do find that reason (that the audience won't be familiar with
the song) to be a bit of an excuse to not play WDADU stuff.
For any band members reading: if nothing else, in the future, please include
one WDADU in the set - at least us 'jammers will be familiar with the song.
And if nothing else, maybe those who don't know the song will look for it and
come across WDADU (and therefore buy a copy). If in fact the band isn't happy
with the songs (since they are older), why not take a little time (not
necessarily as much as for ACoS) to "update" a couple tracks, maybe even one
from the Majesty demo.
I for one would love to exchange a track that we commonly hear at a DT show
(whatever that song may be) for something rare (anything off of WDADU or the
Majesty demos). I'm curious to hear anyone's thoughts.

I just wanted to reply to the post by Joey about the form of DT tunes. I'm
not out to attack you, because I agree with some of what you said. I'm a
music major so I have taken quite a bit of Theory and Analysis, and I too pay
attention to the form of DT's songs. Ytse Jam is a good example of a tune
which simply exploits a couple of ideas in different guises (and there's
nothing wrong with that!).
My argument is this: you compared the form of DT tunes to that of Pearl
Jam, and I think there is a point to be made (I realize that you were just
making a generalization). My feeling is that DT is different because THEY pay
attention to the form of their music. They know when they want to repeat a
section or change it in a certain way. Pearl Jam, IMO, probably goes more
from the gut, or simply writes a song in the form of those that they've heard
for years.
Finally, I'd just like to say that, as humans, we need form - it helps
us to make sense of the world around us. Every piece of music has a form.
Form isn't bad, form is our friend!

I just got back from a local CD store in town. Unfortunately, I
found out that Galactic Cowboy's new album has been delayed till Feb. Bummer.
On the bright side, I decided to check out the DT section just
for kicks. Low and behold, right in front of my eyes was "Instrumental."
I quickly snagged it and I've only gotten a chance to listen to it once.
Wow!!! It's amazing. It's really interesting to hear Afterlife, TOWHTSTS,
and The Killing Hand w/o vocals (they sound better, but that's just my
opinion on Charlie). They have a song called "Resurrection of Ernie" that
kicks ass. For all you shedders out there, there's a three-part "Guitar
Player" spotlight that will blow your minds. It blew mine, and I don't
even play guitar. Buy this thing from Tim Lodge ASAP. You won't be sorry.

I just got it about four days ago and it is awesome. Make sure to read the
liner notes so that you are not suprised that one or two trax there was
nothing to be done about the inferior sound quality. I got AD with WDATU as
well. It rocks. Bruce D is great on Perfect strangers. I also got a copy
of Subcon. I was not Mercy Fucked and would like to know where it is in the
old version. I have a copy of the new version in which you can be Mercy
Fucked. I love the plese dont go thatevery one talks about. I also got TSM
single today. It was 9.99. The store also had (drum roll, BEN LAUSSADE,
that means you) WDADU on import. Out of print temporarily? I think not.
Oh yeah, one last thing. I made a dub of DT stuff for a convert of mine.
It is two 90 minute tapes and if you want a set list, so to speak, email me.
I would be happy to share. Another last thing. I am borrowing Shadow
Gallery's Carved in Stone and Enchant's Blueprint of the World. Both are
just great. I recommend both to the hard core prog-rock fan who is looking
for something new to add to the collection. Also, a plug for Season's End

i just wanted to say how cool it is that we have this mailing list. I go to
college in a little town in upstate NY and it's a lot different from LI
where they've gotten quite a bit of exposure. Barely anyone here likes my
music. It's all rap or sappy, mainstream music that I hate. Once i saw a
guy with an awake shirt and i know a kid who loves DT but doesn't even
friggin have ACOS. I'm glad i found a way to talk to people who listen to
my stuff. Does anyone else have these problems? BTW, for you headbangers
on the list, check out Down's CD(it's got Phil Anselmo and Pepper Keenan).

I just had to tell everyone that by this Friday, I will have john Petrucci's
insructional guitar video in my hands!! Its called ROCK DISCIPLINE and its
from REH Videos. I found the ad in the latest Guitar mag (the one where
they give the 50 most influential hard rock guitar songs since the beatles).
Anyway, I will let everyone know how the video is...when I saw Mike Portnoy
in Wichita for his drum clinic he said that the rest of the guys in DT are in
the VID too!!!

Hello,
A few digests ago somebody asked about Fates Warning Cds to purchase for
first time listeners.
Well, I would not really recommend their latest one - 'Inside Out'- its a bit
too sombre and depressing, I think the band was/are going through a rough
patch at the time.
If you want a recent FW cd try ' Parallels' - now that is well produced and
sounds really good - a thoughtful album.
Thier early stuff has been released as double CDs by Metal Blade records and,
as normal, it's their best stuff. Try 'No Exit'.
Also, there was an amusing comment about the band's picture in the Inside-
Out CD inlay. It gave me a fright to see how rough those guys looked. The
photos with 'Parallels' are more complimentary.
The best band pictures I have seen are the back of I&W - DT look really cool,
and the portraits of Rush on the Hold Your Fire cd.

I wandered in to the Record Store yesterday and I found the new Galactic
Cowboys CD. I think it came out yesterday. It is called Machine Fish. It
is about 70 minutes long and it sounds more like Space in Your Face than
the first album. I was wondering if there sound would change with Dane
leaving the band, but I never checked to see that he never wrote any of the
songs. Anyway, they sound the same and I think it is a good album. Oh
yeah! DT is the only band that they thank. I would recommend it if you
like GC and I am pretty sure everybody on here does.

Yeah...but it took me a year and a half to figure out what waas happening in
the beginning of Metallica's "Don't Tread On Me".
If you know the song, you'll understand it...if you don't...TOO BAD! :-)
The intro goes:

DUH DUH
The way I was hearing it for a year and a half was if the third "POW" was 1,
and the first two were pickup notes. I still think that that's what it's
sposed to be for the FIRST part pf the intro...but, then they (Metallica :-)
change it so that the _first_ "POW" is 1. Geez...I remember the day I
figured that out. I felt like a new man.
Those who have the TSM single...
In the TTT demo, during the key solo, JP solos along with him, not
unison-it didn't have anything to do with the key part-for about two bars.
IMO, that sounded awesome. I'd like to hear a long section where DS and JP
solo together. Actually, "at the same time" would be a better term to use.
