Ok people I heard about this song just today and someone said Mike P
was talking about it. Well what is it? I know it's a song but what
does it sound like? Is it coming on there new album? what about
metropolis pr2? I would really like all of these Q answered please
Im especially dying to know about Raise the Knife. Now on another
note I would like to talk about JP a sec. I hope he reades this. I
personally hate improvised solos. I love just a nice thought out
solo. I'm pretty sure that JP does this. I love it too. I am so
afraid he'll start improvising because of the negative input he get's
from his peers. Well please don't do it. Just stay with your roots.
I am really eager to hear the new album but it's going to be a long
time. Does anyone know what stylel it's going to be? More I&W or
Awake? Thank's everybody for reading. Pardon all of my errors it's
    late.

I wondering if anyone saw the headbangers ball a while back when James and
Mike were on the show promoting Awake. That was pretty cool. That was when
I saw the Lie video. Did they make any other videos for Awake? I guess you
couldn't make one ACOS. It would be a small length film. You could get
some little kid for the beginning and have him as Wilford Brimley at the end
as he sits down with his son. One more question, what's up with Metallica?
Are they ever coming out with an album or what? It better not be a bunch of
sellout shit. I better be going now, talk to chaps and chapetts later.

I forgot to mention the Metropolis mailing list in my last move mail :)

There are two lists that are going to start Monday night. You can subscribe
to one or both of them depending on what kind of a list you prefer:

    METROPOLIS

This will be a moderated, low volume mailing list. It will only
be available in both ACK and DIGEST modes although posts will
occur in "bursts" (ie it won't be as interactive or "chatty"
as ytsejam). Metropolis will concentrate primarily on news
concerning progressive metal acts with a focus on Dream Theater.

            To subscribe send:

            subscribe metropolis Your Name

to metropolis-request@arastar.com with a subject of "asdf".
("Your Name" would be "Ken Bibb" if you were me--the email address
is taken out of your message's headers)

    YTSEJAM

An unmoderated, high volume mailing list. It will be available
in both ACK and DIGEST modes.

            To subscribe send:

            subscribe ytsejam Your Name

to ytsejam-request@ax.com with a subject of "asdf". If you
run into problem with subscription on ax.com, send email to
ytsejam-owner@ax.com and Jason or Ryan will help you.

If you have questions, feel free to email ytsejam-owner@arastar.com and
either Ryan or I will answer your questions.

    One more time Ytsejammers!!

It's the bookworm here, and I'm just getting started with my papers' research. "Progressive rock on the radio" will be a tough paper to research for, but with your help, it might be a little less-painful. I've got one more question for you all to think about and hopefully answer (to my e-mail address). If you are a progressive rock fan, and like Dream Theater, can you send me a short stat sheet on yourself?? Include all the information that would make a research paper interesting!! How about these:

[PLEASE SEND ALL RESPONSES TO rtgood@students.wisc.edu NOT THE JAM! -skadz]

    1. Hair length ("only people with long hair listen to that....") 2. Age 3. Occupation / student rank (high school or college year) 4. sources for discovering progressive music (what do you use to find out about these awesome bands like Dream Theater?) 5. Other music liked. 6. other hobbies (fishing, underwater basket weaving, etc...)

Again, I must extend a large thank you to everyone who is helping me out. Let's see what we can do about progressive rock and the radio, eh?

Well, the high-end Trinity Keyboards have a Prophecy unit buint-in to them, so Derek could have ben using that. I prefer the prophecy stand-alone, though, as it has the very cool new wheel & ribbon thing going. If only it had a normal pitch bend/mod joystick or lever instead of the old-style separate wheels... :(

But hey, at only $1500 the prophecy is AFFORDABLE!!! :) I may get one in the next year. It's realy cool that Derek is using one.

My computer has been down for the last two weeks due to administrator conflict. I just spent 1 1/2 hours reading the last couple of weeks worth of Ytsejam postings. On to my point.

Anyone know of a place where I can get some of those more obscure DT tunes? I don't have anything to trade, unless you want copies of the TSM single, but I am attempting to build a collection. I know of a lot of songs, but unfortunately, I don't know how to get a hold of them. If anyone feels the pang of sympathy in his heart, please E-Mail me at BRussell@comm.sccu.edu and let me know if you are willing to work something out.

Also, are there any Jammers in the Southern California area? DT does not get a lot of airplay anymore around here (that I know of). They used to get a lot playing PMU, but I haven't heard them for a while. That brings up an interesting point; last week I was listening to Howard Stern in the morning, and one time as the show was coming back from commercial, the crew had Lie playing in the background. I thought that was cool. Anyway, if there are any jammers in So Cal, get in touch with me...

    Dear jammers,

Hey, what's up guys? Now, I've noticed that a lot of people on this list would do anything to get their hands on a DT poster. Now, don't you guys think that Dream Theater should make their posters more accessible to their fans? I had to do a lot to get my two posters! It'd be so much better if I could go into a CD store to look at and buy DREAM THEATER posters than having to flip through those pictures of Green Day and Blind Melon. I'm sorry, but that really pisses me off.

Well, wanted to get that out in the open. Do any of you guys agree?

    Yours, Jeff =)

Hello Jammers, Hope your semester is going well, because mine isn't. Anyway, I just watched John Petrucci guitar instructional vid last night. Its called ROCK DISCIPLINE and it fuckin rulz! For anyone who thought Petrucci was a total guitar god before, you'll be reassured and then some that DT's axeman is the greatest guitarist to EVER walk the face of the earth!! Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit, but I know he the best around right now. Why, well, his lessons on this vid are VERY comprehensive. They range in difficulty from easy-to-master to SUPER-DUPER-INHUMAN (namely, the sweep arpeggios that he called "fairly difficult"!!) Anyway, he has composed two little guitar pieces to demonstrate his theory on chord progression and left-hand excercising. WOW, although the two little ditties are about two-1/2 minutes each, they`re still very cool. Also, John agve us a back-stage tour of his tour equippment, setup and rigg and showed us how he programms all of his sounds and effects. AWESOME! For any guitar player who wants to drool and have a night filled with wishful thinking, this is for you. Personally, John Petrucci has a very cool persona. He speaks very down to earth yet you get the sense that his IQ is probably up there, I mean he's a very intelligent guy (unlike the Dave Mustaine who only becomes condesending during interviews and stuff). Anyway, I recommmend this video to everybody. Very coooool!

Today on MTV's Singled Out, the following questioned surfaced and I thought you might be interested in today's MTV mindset. This is what is important to the "Alternative" generation... *Sigh*...

Question: "In a band, which is more important? Music or Attitude?"

    Bimbo #1: "Music!"

    Bimbo #2: "Attitude!"

    Bimbo #3: "Attitude!"

"And what did you say, Hunk?"

    Fuckhead #1: "Attitude!!!"

Actually, this doesn't surprise me. Bush, Silverchair, Green Day...

Plenty of attitude. No music worth paying attention to though.

It pays to be "in". *Sigh*

I'm going to go cry now...

I hope Peter's post really helped alot of you who don't understand why James isn't an incredible singer to comprehend it! He had alot of VERY crucial information that one must know when evaluating styles like James'. I will breif them again for you but I suggest reading his post in Ytsejam 1245.

    1) James may not always have the best diction or turn all dipthongs (making words clear precise and understandable) because he is not trying to. Peter brought up the point that operas are written w/ the mind set that is more than half of the notes the singer must sing are at or near the limits of his range then he will not nearly be at best or even good voice at the upon the end of the preformance. Therefore around 7 high "C"s are written in an entire preformance. There are more than that in many DT songs. So by the end of the night he has hit maybe 40 of them.

    2) Peter also mentioned that James vowels aren't always correct. This is because in Italian (which is what most operas are written in) there aren't near as many near as many different vowel sounds. Take the long sound "e" like in "feel". This is a much harder vowel to make when hitting higher notes than "ah" as in "saw" or "ha ha". Try it yourself! Therefore to hit certain notes one must alter the vowel some. Which is why most operas are written in Italian because this doesn't have to be done near as much.

Trust me when I say that James is a GREAT singer. Do not critisize his singing ABILITY do that to his singing STYLE if you wish but he is a great singer!

    Hello jammerz!

I've just picked up Sieges Even's latest album called Sophisticated, and I was really impressed by the music. I'm a fan of the band since their 1990 CD Steps, and their 1991 work A sense of change is one of my favourite albums, but this one's even better! This CD is a fabulous mixture of jazz, funk and Dream Theaterish prog-rock. They changed their guitarist: Wolfgang Zenk replaced Markus Steffen, and IMO he's a better guitarist than Steffen was. In a word, every jammer has to check this out: this is something worth searching for! ( The only problem is that they're on a very small label, so their CDs are hard to find overseas - I'm Hungarian. ) Bye,

    > I'm a big Iron Maiden fan of the mid to late 80's, up till seventh son. > Has anyone heard the X Factor? Is it at all worth getting? If someone > could email me with info (the band members, the music quality, quality of > lyrics, vocals, anything) I would be very interested. Thanks a lot.

    Hello,

I am an italian Maiden fan from 1984 and I got X-factor about two months ago. Then I listened to Maiden gig in Italy in Palaeur,Rome. Do ya want some info on the album....this is really dofficult cos every Maiden fan has a different opinion about it. Well, this is MY opinion and surely will be different from what many people can think. So the album is very controverse, the classic maiden's sound has changed a bit with heavier guitars (frequently D-tuned), very emphasized bass and,of course, the same shitty drum style of Nicko Mc Brain. But the real new thing is the new vocalist, Mr. Blaze Bayley, who is many times greatly tone-deaf. His natural vocal style is a bit different from Bruce Dickinson's (close to Motorhead's Lemmy Kliminster) but Steve Harris told him to clone Bruce's style. So when Blaze screams and rocks (what he made in Wolfsbane) he sounds good, when clones Bruce he goes out of tone. But the main problem of "X-factor" (the X means Blaze,Steve Harris said) is the cheap song quality. There is only one great track,at the highness of the name Iron Maiden, and this is the opener "The Sign Of the Cross"; this 10 minutes song could be inserted in Powerslave, really. Then there are two songs, "Thy Lord of the flies" and "man on the edge", that are nothing more than pretty. The rest (except the good "Look for the truth") is very disappointing.

The track in which Mr.Bayley goes more out of tone is "Look for the truth" (intro part, I never listened anything like it!!) and the best-singed song is "the sign...", really ok (except a pair of faults).

When I have gone to the show, the band looked really better, specially Mr.Bayley, who sung in an acceptable way the new stuff, but really destroyed the all-time Maiden Hits specially "Hallowed.." and "Heaven can Wait" (does anyone said that this is a classic??). But the failure of X-factor (lack of quality of course, not lack of success) is surely the low song quality level and Mr.bayley has no responsability in that. There are some heavy problems:

    1) Mr.Steve Harris must try something different in songwriting or go home 2) Mr.Gers must get out from Iron Maiden and specially HE SHOULD NOT COMPOSE ANYMORE. Almost every track he made from when he got into Maiden is disappointing (one for all: Weekend Warriors from Fear of the dark). He is a cheap player (his rythm playing on stage is irritating) and a shit of composer. 3) If the Irons want to change their musical style, they have to change the drummer (even the Ac-dc may refuse Mr.McBrain). 4) and finally..if Irons intend to make another album like X-factor,i suggest them to go home without destroying a legend like Iron Maiden.

I hope that your doubts are cleared and I wait for your opinions. Bye Adrian "Ryo Saeba" Avecone
