Ken, this may affect some things in the future involving you and the
Ytsejams. I would suggest echoing this out to the next digest. Heck, send
it out now by itself.
[For those of you not following this, check out the web pages (if you
go to http://www.eff.org you can find a lot of info on this bill). I'm
including this here because mailing lists like this one will be forced
into using "G" rated language because there are under-18 subscribers
here. This bill will hopefully lose in the Federal Court system. If
not, I hope that some non-USA ytsejammers will take the list to a country
where freedom of speech is held in higher esteem than it is here--kbibb.]
-------------------------
President William J. Clinton today signed into law the
Telecommunications Dececy Act. This bill, which governs _all_
publically-accessible material on the Internet, is the most broad
censorship act passed by the United States Government since World War II -
or possibly some time before.
As of now, any material considered "indecent" - which, from a legal
standpoint, more or less means "not suitable for children under the age of
12" - is illegal. Discussion of abortion, by separate clause, is now
completely forbidden. Punishment for causing any material violating this
act to be transmitted is up to two years in jail and up to a $100,000 fine
"per incident."
There is a national protest starting on web pages; everyone
participating is turning their backgrounds black and their text white.
This is to stay in place for two days. After that, sites are encouraged to
carry the "Blue Ribbon" graphic in protest. (For details on this protest,
see http:\\www.eff.org\blueribbon.html. For more general details, see
http:\\www.eff.org\.)

Hi everybody! I've mailed Ken (and will mail Jeff Chew and Kevin
Laferriere in a few minutes) the new Cd update. I'll talk a little about
it in a moment, after the instructions. It's one you'll Want.
Here's how to get it:
EMAIL: send a message only saying:
get ytsejam bahr-update.960204
to ytsejam-request@arastar.com with a subject of "asdf". (Note
^^^^^^^
that the address is NOT ytsejam@arastar.com.)
If you have problems retrieving the file, send email to
ytsejam-owner@arastar.com asking for help.
^^^^^^
WWW: http://www.columbia.edu/~jc309/dreamt.html
http://www.cs.usm.maine.edu/~laferrie/music/dt/bahr.html
It's rather important... I think most of you will want to see it.
It contains complete track listings (final) for Antiquities AND Scenes
> From a Memory, which I'm about to open orders on. I am going to do the
production almost simultaneously on these two (except that AQ is mostly
done, just gotta send them one after the other for printing etc). In
order to do both, I need a huge influx of cash real fast. I can probably
handle just using the plastic and let the orders pay it back as they come
in (which is how I did Subconscious) but I like to try and keep the ole'
VISA empty in case emergencies come up... and I got this feeling. Let's
just say that between New York flu, Scorpions, and the Cowboys winning
the Super Bowl, my luck has been pretty low these days. :) So what I'm
going to ask is nothing really momentous.. just that if you've been
waiting to order WDATU or AQ and just haven't, or have been meaning to
get around to it, please do so now if you can. Better yet! If you're new
to the Jam or to my CD projects, great! Your interest couldn't have come
at a better time. I know some of you are tight for cash and have
mentioned it to me... don't sweat it, I'm not gonna drop anyone's
reservation anytime soon. I _could_ open SFAM ordering and that would
solve the problem neatly, but that goes against my honesty-preserving
policy of never accepting money for a CD until I'm physically pressing
that particular CD print run.
By the way... thanks to Charone Frankel for the cool Get Well
card. :) I did recover from venom fever... it's a curse I wouldn't wish on
my worst enemy. It acts like a flu or head cold, but no cold medicines
work on it! Arrrgh! Fortunately, it did not slow WDATU down one iota. I
simply had my girlfriend, sister, or buddies drop the mailings off every
day, like the tickin' of a clock. On schedule. I've packed up to #370 as
of tonight.
By the way, I need a small favour from fellow Jammers if you have
a lot of time and nothing to do with it. This is nothing that can't wait,
but since you are all over the world (though this mainly pertains to the
USA) it really helps if I try this. I'm trying to collect the new series
of Star Wars figures (Power Of The Force) for fun, and I've run out of luck
finding some of them. I already have about three Han Solos, Chewies, R2-D2s,
and Lukes. I only have one Leia, C-3PO, Vader, and Stormtrooper, so I need
more of those if possible. And I have none at all of the following:
Obi-Wan Kenobi, Froot Loops Han Solo (though I did order one), Boba Fett,
Luke in X-Wing gear, Lando Calrissian, Yoda, Imperial TIE Figher Pilot,
Han in Hoth gear, and Luke in Hoth gear. Usually, these sorts of things
can be had for 5 to 7 bucks at a target, wal-mart, or whatever, but the
ones here in Arizona are always picked clean by speculator-leeches.
So basically the favour I'm asking is this: if you happen to see
the ones I need, go ahead and buy it (if you can afford to... I won't
have anyone missing lunch on my account) and I'll re-imburse you via mail
if you can send it along. If you happen to find 3 or 4 of them (18 to 24
bucks worth) then I'll kick in the extra amount to reimburse you with a
CD, if you wish, so both options are open to you. By posting this
publicly, I stand a good chance of getting 4 or 5 of each of the ones I
need, which is about right since my friends need to get them too. :)
[Ken, I hope you won't mind putting this blatantly commercial post through. I
admit it gets a bit off topic. But it DOES pertain to a way people can
acquire my CDs, right? :) Anyway, if you decide to nuke it, I can see
why, though I'd hope you wouldn't. ]
Anyway I've said my piece, so down off the soapbox I go. Thanks
to everyone for spreading the word about my CDs!! I still have many CDs
to go before the old spirit is extinguished (or DT tells me that enough
is enough and to knock it off... though Scenes will be the last DT disc I
do for a good while, I hope they won't mind/care/choose to do anything. :)

Fellow Jammers,
Effective immediately, I will no longer be accepting orders for the Awake in
Japan '95 Video. I've been doing this for almost three months now and as of
Feb 5, I have done about 50 dubs, so I figure let someone who has a copy take
over for me. I want to thank everyone who has ordered a tape from me. I have
definitely enjoyed watching every dub that's been done.

Hi there,
Just a small mail from the Lowlands.
Mike multiple thanks for the WDATU CD. It's great. It seems every new
project you bring out in the open got a higher standard when it
concerns sound and booklets. Great front cover. Keep up the great and
good work.
I have two small questions. One question for Mike Bahr and one common
question concerning "Don't Look Past Me", which b.t.w. has become one
of my favourite old DT tracks.
1. I remember you promised us Under A Glass Moon, from the LatM show.
Will it be on one of the next CD's?
2. Does anybody know if James LaBrie has sung "Don't Look Past Me" in the past?
a. If so does anybody have a copy of it?
b. Or will it be on one of the next CD's of Mike?
c. Or will there be an official release, B-side or what so ever, in
the future?
Thanks,
Wilco Barg

When they played here in November it was to less than 2,000 people, but they
STILL got Eddie on stage! :-)
I wouldn't be at all surprised if Dream Theater end up playing larger venues
than Maiden in a couple of years' time.

Just received WDATU #293 and #294 a few days ago. Scott Hansen's review was
fine, so I'll save space and won't write another one.
Where does the name "Showdown" come from, Mike? Anyhow, the biggest surprise
for me, a great Instrumental! And the fadings are a lot better this time :-)) !

Hello again!
I listened to Machine Fish on Thursday and thought it well... sucked, compared to the first two albums. They changed their sound similar to King's X (listen to Faith... and Dogman), from crazy long songs to the usual rock song format. Sorry, but it's BORING and I'm disappointed, like nearly every time I listen to a new album.
Am I getting too biased or critical to enjoy the new albums of all the bands I used to like a lot? Or is that grunge/hardcore/shitty-primitive-rock-songs thing getting that strong?
Well, that saved a lot of money...
Bye, Steffen

Howdy folks, I'm brand new to the DT mailing list and after reading a couple of digests I have a couple of questions. First off, I hear ppl mentioning that they got WDATU through the mail. I've been looking for that and acoustic dreams for a while. Can someone help me?
[talk to mike bahr (durnik@indirect.com) about WDATU. AD is sold out, you'll have to get a dub from someone--skadz]
Also, am I the only one who noticed just how frickin difficult it is to find a DT t-shirt anywhere in Massachusetts? The ytsejammers in the room can sympathize with me. Also, three cool DT related things happened to me over the past month or so. First, I was in Newbury Comics out of boredom and went to the DT section. I found LaTM, WDADU, and the Lie single there. I was a happy puppy. Then about a week ago I found the import of the Silent Man single. I just think it was neat that they slapped a classic rock sticker on WDADU and I got it for $11, same thing I payed for the Silent Man. I'm just starting into Fates Warning now too, and if anyone knows any otherobscure, cool progressive bands please let me know. Reply to me personally or on the list, or whatever. I'm looking forward to the new album, and oh yeah, almost forgot is there ANY way to get the uncovered show on cd/tape/anything? I'd give my right leg for it. I'd appreciate any answers you guys could give me,also I just heard about the loss in the Portnoy family, I'd like to extend my sincere apologies and best wishes for them, and the band as a whole. Thanks, -John Fallavollita ssa96isi10@mecn.mass.edu (yeah I know its a pain in the butt of an address but its school issued :) P.S. If anyone from DT reads this mailing list I just want to thank you all for writing I&W so well, it helped me through a really rough time recently, but now "I'm standing here facing my soul, I'm learning to live." -DT

This is for Marc Respass and the other bass player:
For your information, the correct terms are doublebass or contrabass, not string bass, acoustic bass, or upright bass. I should know, I've been playing for 8 years. Please don't use those incorrect terms in my presence.

With the recent debate about James Labrie finally dying down I have come up with a topic that deals with James. I wonder why James doesn't write more of the lyrics? He is the singer but does he not have any good lyrics to contribute. A lot of bands let the singer do the majority of the lyrics not wanting to put words in his mouth, but DT seems the total opposite.

Ya know, I went to a used CD store and listened to Space... and was turned on by it's technicality and harmonies. I liked it at first. But now I've been trying to learn the songs and I'm completely turned off by they lyrics. I'm sorry, but MAN they're corny. I don't care who made those circles in the fields! I don't care about Mrs. Leslie. I don't want to hear a song whose only lyrics are "Space in your face" over and over again. Come on!!! These guys have incredible musical maturity, but I wish that maturity would be present in their lyrics.
Sure you could argue that they're just having fun and are more light-hearted than DT, but at least DT's music and lyrics are both intellectual. GC's music is complex, while its lyrics are childish.
They also, in my opinion, don't have a knack for making catchy riffs. (Definition: A song that goes through your head all day.) The exception: "No Problem". Other than that, for some reason they just don't stick in my head. Is it just me?
Note: I only own Space In Your Face, but if their newest album is just like this one, I'm not interested! Are there 3 albums by them now? Self Titled, Space in your Face, and Machine Fish?
To be Politically Correct, all of what I say is just my opinion and I welcome any and all criticism.

Oh, and if DT did their own CD-ROM, it would probably be a "gift" to the fans, a valuable resource, a new way to become more in touch with the band, and a statement that DT truly cares about their fans. This is but mere speculation, of course. If you don't care for Queensryche releasing this project, what do you think about JP doing a guitar video? I'm sure this would be exempt from "disappearing up his own arse [sic]. Whatever... G. Jack Thetgyi P.S. On a lighter note, Victor rocks!
