I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything about Mike Portnoy
doing a drum video. He first mentioned doing it in an interview in the
January '95 issue of Modern Drummer. He also said that he would probably
do it because John P. was doing a video, and that company wanted Mike to
do one too. Any word on John's video coming out soon? I was just
curious since this interview was over a year ago. These two guy would
    rock on videos!!!

    Hey all ....

Well, it's been a LONG time since I did this, so be afraid,
be very afraid. As Ken has mentioned and some of you saw from the last
few jams from arastar, I work here now. :) The only problem is that
I don't have an ax.com account yet. It's kinda like being hired to open
a store each morning and not being given the key. :) We are working
on it and hopefully it will be resolved soon. Once I do get access to
ax.com, I will make sure that the response@ibmmail.com thing disappears.

I have seen some posts and have gotten some mail about Metropolis.
First Metropolis is at arastar.com still. So to subscribe to Metropolis,

mail metropolis-request@arastar.com with the subject asdf. The body of
    the message should contain:

            subscribe metropolis yourname

Without the yourname part, it will error and you will not be subscribed.
Same process for this list but replace the metropolis in all cases
with ytsejam and the arastar with ax :)

Another note on Metropolis, there have yet to be any Metropoli,
so you haven't missed anything yet and are subscribed if it said
you were, just nothing has gone out yet.

Moving forward .... I'm glad to see lots of people on IRC these
days and so many people talking about it on the jam. It's fun just to
be able to talk to all these people online in real time (not that I talk
too much myself as pointed out in the #ytsejam Drinking Game) I have
a real busy schedule, so I usually just idle in the channel to keep it
going and shoot my mouth off every once in a while. So, come visit
and talk to us. I mean, how could you pass up an opportunity to talk
    to BafuVai in realtime?????

I have bought a bunch of CDs that were recommended by the jam,
and I am totally happy with all of them. I got Paradise Lost "Draconian
Times" which is awesome. I think its kinda like Metallica with a
prog touch, and its real good. Also got the new Thought Industry which
rocks. I was kinda suprised when I heard them because it definately
didn't sound like music that I would expect of the jam, but I like
em alot. If you like TI, check out 311, I think you will be happy.
Also got the new GC which is cool.

This week was DT stuff week for me :):) I got my copy of
WDATU!!!! It kicks ass. I love the cover art too. Big thanks go
out to Mike Bahr for another great CD. I also got my copy of John
P at NAMM, which I have only had a few minutes to watch so far, but
it seems real cool and the video quality kicks ass. Thanks to Dave
Wruck for this one!! The cool part is that I am still waiting for
more DT stuff. I have become way too much of a fanatic :)

More jam stuff. Ken said something to me the other day
which I thought was kinda funny, but very true. When the jam was
moderated, people didn't even try to post some of the stuff that they
are posting now. It was like the idea of moderation was more of
a deterent than the actual moderation. I saw this when I moderated
some jams. It was just basically cleaning up bounces and some
small trimmings. No real loss of posts because most people posted
alot of good posts. I just kinda think that the quality of the jams
has dropped a bit since we went unmoderated. Let's get some good
discussions and stuff going. And stop bitching about the
response@ibmmail.com thing. I will fix it as soon as possible. Also,
I do plan to kill threads if they get out of hand. Just some minor
moderation if things go too far. Take it to email if you really wanna
sit and argue about Eddie VH vs. JP.

One final sad note. As Augie posted, John's father passed
away last week. I was going to send a message to the jam, but I
didn't want a quick stupid note that said something quick. I wanted
to really write something and just ran out of time. We discussed on
IRC trying to get some notes to the Petrucci familty together and
I would send them home to be given to Mrs. Petrucci. If you would
like to send a note to the Petrucci family, not just John, email me
something, and in about a week, I will print them all out and send
them to my mom to give to the Petruccis. Please take this seriously,
because it is a time of grieving for the Petrucci family and I would
    like to show our support.

That's all from me for now.

First I'd like to tell you that your post gave the impression that you tend to only like music only if it has keyboards... but I hope it's a misunderstanding... anyways, don't worry, everything goes in cycles. The grunge days are almost over, and talent is slowly starting to show up in the media (although very slowly)... anyways my point is remember the first prog-invasion started in the early 70's, then in the late seventies came punk, then in the 80's talent (and keyboards) was found in popular music... then in the 90's came grunge, and we just had a punk revival...so my logic tells me that soon talent will be prominent in the air waves and surely DT will be big when that time comes...

I highly advise that you DO NOT play this game with an alcoholic beverage. As someone who has never taken a drink before, I don't know what my limit would be, but glancing at the rules, I would be *over* it in about 10 minutes! And I'm fairly certain that *anyone* would. You could get 'faced with "...any typo..." and "!!!!! in greeting." One person enters the channel, and from exclaimation points alone, you'd go though 2 beers in 30 seconds. Just a few more additions:

Ytse-Ben takes it and eats it. Ytse-Kurt says something intellegent D-Man changes the topic to "The Silent Version of The Electric Man Rules!!!" Gabbo changes the topic to "The polka version of ACoS Rules!!!" Gabbo DOESN'T ask you to "SIGN HIS PHREAKIN GUESTBOOK!!!" (assuming you haven't already.) A newbie calls "Dream Theater" "Dream Theatre" A regular DOESN'T as a newbie if s/he's a newbie. BlackSax is ever on for more than 5 minute without quitting from a "Ping timeout" Someone from an IP address gets auto-oped Someone kicks Skadz and DOESN'T fall victim to a "local kill" {I actually did that once...} bigman DOESN'T complain about his WWW Page, or sign on as "loser" Anyone lets a semi-innuendo go by w/o acting like Beavis or Butthead. Skadz speaks and no one is shocked. Someone picks their 'bejeezus' up after someone else slaps it out of them.

I'll leave it to D/E-Men to add any of these to their list, and I'm sure one of the IRCer will add it to their page. It's up to the two of them what drinking actions the above fall into.

Once again, I advise you all to play this game with non-alcoholic liquids, even caffene can be dangerous. For your sake, and the sake of those on IRC who would have to put up with your drunk/hyper ass, please... use water... and plug your computer in near a bathroom.

    Have fun all. Later.

I found a lyric or two and wish to print them here, hoping someone will pass them on to John. Best wishes from all of us to you, John.

"Never the Same" Lyrics by Brett W. Kull of Echolyn

*************************************** What can I say, What can I do for you? Some are here for but a moment then are taken in an instant to eternity. Remember life and what's been shared with you, that you have shared.

It's funny how we feel closer to the ones that we love when they're farthest away. You can feel them so near, just 'round the corner; the memory still clear.

"Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there, I did not die." I say to you I will see you again on the other side; someday.

"There's never endings, only discovery" I tell myself over and over again. Some leave their mark in our hearts then go.

It's hard to continue onward when forever comes down, it comes down so heavy, too final to forger. You've got to believe there's something more.

After the song is over the dance goes on, so dance away. When all has been said and dome remember what's been given, not taken away. But you struggle and you strain as the undertow pulls you down.

The years will spare the rod and soften the hardest blow... but I am never the same. With time comes a certain fading and erasing but I am never the same.

In each man there lies a start that has no end, a means to be more, a light that shines in its own special way.

Left with cold distance, I'll always be with you. We weather the cycle, I'll always be there. So fragile to balance, too potent to harness. Life charges past the mortal in man. Remember all the life you shared every day. There's never endings, but I'll never be the same. *************************************

That's it. I wish John the best. ____________________________________

Yes, Same guy. I talked with him a lot after the gig, and he was SIGHT readiing the short giog back in October. He was NOT impressed by DT that much (I was wearing a DT shirt). Actually, to do a DT covers compilation *might* be more trouble than it's worth. I know my band would be happy to chip in with Pull Me Under, Take The Time, The Silent Man, and Lie, since all of them have at least been rehearsed, and PMU and TTT have been played live by us. But to put together studio versions, even with a 4-track, the chances of a quality tape coming out of the other end is pretty dern slim unless we're using 8-track digital or something to that effect.

It'd be better if people who were in bands (I know this is not most of you) would record (from their mixing board) a live performance of a DT song. Better yet, if many if you who play different instruments outside of a band setting live close by each other, you should get together on a Saturday morning... by 6pm you should be able to play most any DT song for the compilation, if you can read tabs or music.

Anyone who's heard the Tori Covered tape that the REally Deep Thoughts people did, knows what I'm afraid of here... :)

    Dear Mojoman,

Some Jammers like Tori. DT covered her song "Winter," at the Ronnie Scotts Uncovered Gig. That track is on Subconscious. Obviously, DT likes Tori enough to cover one of her songs. That is why Tori is related to DT and that is one of the reasons why some Jammers talk about her. Any questions?

So, now he's stealing my subjects?? :-)

    >I would say that you can pretty much bank on the fact that anytime you hear >James singing a relatively high passage that it's in his falsetto voice. Your >falsetto voice has nothing to do with your body style or build, anymore than >your general vocal range does (whether your're a bass or tenor, etc.). > I'm not a concert singer but I do sing in choruses and some times the men >are required to sing in falsetto for high pitches, such as D or E above middle >C. I'll agree that the sound is a little weaker, but if you sing really loud it >can be quite strong, and James probably sings quite loudly while on stage. > So my conclusion is that high passages are always sung in falsetto, that >includes James, Goeff Tate, and certainly Ray Alder. Of course this fact >doesn't make the music any less fantastic, it's merely an observation. Trey, >I think you would be a good one to discuss singing, wouldn't you?

Okay...if you're not singing in falsetto, it sounds like a regular voice. If you ARE, it sounds like a guy in drag in that beer commercial trying to sound like a woman. But, it can be made to sound good. The only time I can recall James using falsetto (on the regular albums...live stuff and Acoustic Dreams don't count :-) is in LSoaD. In the first chorus: "Lifting shadows off a dreeeeeaaam..." ^^^^^^^^^^^ Dream is sung in a falsetto.

    >BRING BACK THE MODERATION! >John Hough - srvrip@qualcomm.com

/me slaps the bejeezus out John.

That's what shoulda been in the IRC Drinking Game...take a gulp if someone slaps the bejeezus outta someone. Two gulps if someone else picks it up. :-) Anywho...moderation is for metropolis@ax.com. This is the unmoderated list...so I Will Use As Many Lines As I Want MUWAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!

    >2. Ben L. recently commented about the German band Blind Guardian, saying that >he didn't like the singer, and that this opinion is based on some sound bites >off the web. Well, Ben's entitled to his opinion, but I think we should all be >careful of passing sentence on the basis of small take-outs that are usually >of pretty bad quality. Just imagine what somebody might think of Dream Theater >if all they had heard was a 30 second slice of something off the first album >with Charlie singing (OK, I know some of you like his voice). I rest my case.

Yeah...but that's a different vocalist. If I heard 30 secs of DT with Chucky D. singing, I probably wouldn't be writing this right now.

Whoa...Just read a newer Jam and somebody already mentioned the bejeezus thing...but, I don't feel like going all the way back there to delete it. Oh well.

    >> >> Okay folx, due to the popularity of the Ytsejam Drinking Game, E-Man and I >> thought we'd hop on the bandwidthwagon and respond with: >> >> The #ytsejam IRC Drinking Game > >I was counting the days until something like this happened, weren't you? >Sigh.

Call me vain, but I don't mind. I like to see myself mentioned in the Jam...whether it be about the status of my pants, or be it not. :-)

    >But man, I really can't figure out how to say "Borzilleri"-- does it rhyme >with "fury," "hairy," "artillery," or "Jedi"?

Ahh...that's an easy one! I'd like to hear you try to pronounce MY name! :-)

    Well, pieces out, wall.

    Ytse-Ben...it's what's for dinner.

I think, therefore I am. You think you think, therefore you possibly are. I am Ben Laussade....therefore I aren't.
