Hi all DT fans...
I'm a new guy here... And wanna say some words about the my favorite
band.
ple8se excuse my poor english :-o
I play guitar since 4 years and Petrucci is my 'REVELATION' (After
Nuno Bettencourt ;-) )! The amazing riffs, deep and cold !!! Mhhh, I like
that !!! About playing 'The Mirror', 'Lie' or 'Caught In A Web' on a normal
6 Strings : It's not a problem !!! Just Tune Yr 6-Strings Guitar like his
7-Strings (B,E,A,D,G,B,E) but forget the high E... These songs have gr8t
rythmics part that ya can play without the High E ! Okey, just sum problems
for the solos, but in these songs, the rythmics are the most exciting parts,
don't ya think ??? I have 2 guitars: My principal weapon is a Washburn N4
Paddok, tuning in a normal way and sounding Ultra Gr8t :-# I'm also using a
LAG Rockline with the 'Seven Strings tuning' for 'Mirror','Lie' and 'CIAW' !
Note that Special tuning needs special Strings, the best alternative for me
is the Dean Markley Medium (052 042 030 020w 013 011). With these strings,
the Floyd isn't to 'Light' and the bends aren't too 'elastic' ! So don't try
lighther strings ;-X !
About 6:00, The intro played by Kevin on CD is playable on guitar
but requires 2 hands tapping ! In fact, the left hand plays chords (E5 D5 G5
F5, ...) and the right hand plays the same chords but one octave up ! The
easiest and fastest way to play that intro on yr guitar is : Just play first
the chord without the chord 'one octave up'. Note that when ya play this
chords, play it in 4 differents ways for sounding like the original record.
Here we go with the beginning of the intro :
E5======= D5======= G5======= F5=======
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | ...
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
G---------9-9-------7-7------12-12------10-10-- ...
D-------9---9-----7---7----12---12----10---10-- ...
A-----7-----7---5-----5--10-----10---8-----8--- ...
D D D U D D D U D D D U D D D U (Down,Up)
Just Sound CooL and Easy to play , heh ? Now U can check the next
parts of that gr8t & Amazing Song...
The easiest songs (On Guitar) of AWAKE for me are : Scarred, 6:00,
The Mirror, the rythmics part of Erotomania (Solo, Mhhhhh, heheh, Hard !).
The best way tho play all DT songs is : Buying original songbooks (I&W,
AWAKE : Edited by J Petrucci on Warner B. Publications Inc). Internet Tabs
can help ya but don't give ya the exact Ways to Sounds like JP ! But It's
helpfull anyway ...
Bye and long live to DT !!!

Yet another one here, up in Cov! Been into them since 1990 just after
WDADU and as yet I haven`t seen them in concert...more's the pity! But I
have heard a lot of bootlegs of them, so I guess that does make it up a bit!
Well catch y'all later!
So until the next time...

Well, I got "The Moon Revisited" (Pink Floyd tribute) and "Tales from
Yesterday" (Yes tribute). I was somewhat dissapointed with the Moon,
none of the bands add much to the classic tunes, and the performance
of the bands lacks something. Only the band Enchant and some of the
last songs sound convincing. Tales from Yesterday however is a very
good tribute in my opinion. Note that before I got this CD I was only
familiar with two Yes albums ("The Yes Album" and "90125", which are
both excellent in their own way). What I think makes it a good tribute
is that the band sound much more convincing here. It is probably due
to the fact that the musical style of Yes is closer to the sound of
the featured bands. Also there seem to be much more freedom in the
interpretations. An example is "Starship Trooper" which originally is
8 minutes but Jeronimo Roads version is merely 5 minutes. Despite this
reduction they manage to capture the main themes and even adds some
wild keyboard solos not in the original (played by Adam Wakeman,
supposedly Rics Wakemans son (forgive my ignorance here)). A song that
I really like is Cairos version of "South side of the Sky". If the
original is just half as good I will really enjoy it.
One thing is for sure, I have not bought my last Yes album.
I have not found the Genesis tribute yet but I think that it will be
closer to "Tales ..." than "Moon" in quality. BTW the only Genesis
album I have is "Selling England by the Pound" which I think is great.

I'm not sure if it's been on the past few YTSEJAMs, since I've
been out of commission for a while, but has anyone got a recommendation

#1 - Portnoy: if by some slim chance you happen to read this, I'm terribly
sorry to here about your grandmother. I know you're not a fan of sympathy as
stated in C.O.S., but I just thought I'd express something to you here so you
know some of your fans care. It is true - no silent skies . . . so live another
day!!!
#2 - Can anyone give me an explanation behind To Live Forever - the source of
inspiration and the exact meaning of lyrical content?
#3 - Is anyone selling any copies of Acoustic Dreams or Subconcious on CD
anymore (beyond tape dubs)?
#4 - I just have to get this off my chest: It's disappointing to see that Kevin
Moore is getting so trendy with his switch to the subgenre of cynical, bitter,
egocentric, cold, empty, negative, depressing, wishy-washy, irreverent,
disrespectful, purpose-less,
fear/anger/confusion/doubt/hate/spite/rebellion/lust-filled absurdity music!
The kid had potential - a respectable talent both musically and lyrically! I
used to admire some of his work with Dream Theater. Oh well.
THAT'S ALL FOLKS!!! :)

I have the Yes tribute (listening to it right now), and I get some enjoyment
out of it. I think some peple don't realise why MC did these: to promote
their bands. People complain that some tunes are almost note-for-note covers,
but I think that is a little misguided. Like I said, I only have the Yes one,
so maybe it is an exception. It worked on me, though. After hearing Shadow
Gallery's "Release, Release" I ordered their last album.
Hope that helps.

I'm baaaack! muhahahaha My computer is functional again, and since Ken so
kindly dropped the digests to under 25K for us lowly AOLers, I'm subscribing
from here again.
And yes, it's that time again: I NEED SUBMISSIONS FOR THE FANZINE!!! I'm
already way behind schedule, and I have very little, so I'm absolutely
desperate for submissions. I'm particularly interested in reviews of all
three of the DT shows in New England, and whatever else anyone has to
contribute - reviews of cool, lesser known prog metal bands - there was a lot
of talk about Shadow Gallery and Ivanhoe in the past, I'd welcome stuff on
them as well. Please? Pretty please? Pretty please with whipped cream
around it and a... um... well, never mind.
For the benefit of those of you who are new and have no idea what the hell
I'm talking about, I publish a bimonthly Dream Theater fanzine (that also
covers other bands in the prog/power metal vein, preferably underground)
called Metropolis Watch; in fact, the issue after this coming will mark my
second anniversary. I have support from the band, and they all get copies of
each issue, so if you'd like them to read your words, here's your chance. ;)
The zine is $1.25 US/$2.00 foreign for a single issue, or $3.75/$6.00 for a
6 month, 3-issue subscription. Since Mike Bahr hasn't been stalked and
brutally murdered after posting his home address on a regular basis <G> I
will take a chance and post my address as well; email me if you have
questions.

you want a good notation program- go with either encore, or finale. encore is
a lot easier (imo), and i did wfs on it. but if you have the time to learn
finale, i received an excellent copy of elp's karn evil 9, very impressively
done.
encore also contains a guitar tab thingy, so you might like that, too.

re: fw
well, i tried, i have to adnit it, but fates wasn't for me (must be like rush
isn't bafu [i think]). and i did hear some keys throughout (so i thought),
and i have been told a few times that an old friend named kevin moore plays
keys on stuff on parallels and ps (and another buddy named james labrie who
does backing vocals, i believe). i know there's no key player, and that is
precisely why i was curious as to who was playing them.
the ryche fw connection- well, "point of view" imo has that degarmo/tate
harmoniztion sound going (which isn't necessarily bad- i wish i could
harmonize like mr. degarmo), and another example is "apparition" (which i
HATED); had that "rage for order" geoff tate singing. if i wanna hear rfo,
i'd rather put THAT on, personally. oh well, just a lowly opinion.
re: 7 strings v. down-tuning, with a new twist!
someone posted that jp uses the 7 on 6:00.........oh really??????
anyhow, 7's are awesome (i want one, for 5 years now- got dicked over while
trying to buy one last week, but i don't want to get into it now). i expect
to hear it a lot on their new album.
now for a twist- this is for all you tori amos fans, so listen good, yes.
on utp, the tune "the waitress", anyone hear the low guitar in the chorus ("i
believe in peace, bitch....")?
is it downtuned, or is it a 7? it fits the role and plays the register of a
7, but is it or are we being fooled? maybe it's a distorted bass with A LOT
OF TREBLE, but i doubt that. answers??
well, that's it.

I know this is late, but here it is anyway. James LaBrie has the most

By the way, he's a Neil Peart in the making.

Is this the same band where the lead singer, Jesse DuPree, plays the chain-saw
during the "Lumberjack song"? I saw these guys open for Aerosmith and although
it's eye-catching, it's hard to take those guys seriously. Hopefully you're
referring to a different band entirely. (Actually you might be, seeing as the
band I am talking about is spelled Jackyl, I think...) Don't flame me, as this

Actually, I think he's talking about "At Fate's Fingers," the instrumental
verison of "At Fate's Hands" (which is a GREAT tune). And it's a
little funny--Kevin Moore "wasn't too bad."
(Though admittedly, Kevin plays a pretty small part--he's only a guest,
after all.)

Hi again,
I'm writing this regarding my previous letter about AOL users petitioning for
the IRC. Well I found out from another jam member, GHS Rocker, that you can
get the IRC through some other software called GNN (Global Network
Navigator), which I understand AOL bought instead of creating the software
themselves. That has web browser, e-mail, newsgroups and IRC. Their number
is 1-800-815-6112.
So it looks like that may be one way to go in order to get on the #ytsejam
IRC. It still would be nice if they'd have made it simpler and just included
access in the program itself, but oh well. Just wanted to note this.
Thanks. :)
Seize the day,
Irene
