Well, I guess you can add Dave from Bath to the list of UK people (even
though I'm working in Malmesbury!!) Seen DT once (Cardiff St David's Hall
about 2 years ago); have this horrible tendency to be away through
work when they're in the UK :-(

Other favourite bands (of a similar style): Marillion, Arena, Queensryche
    and Kings X.

    And now back to work....

I remember a while ago on the Radio 1 Rock Show, just before 'Awake' was
released, they played '6:00' (it was the first time I got to hear any 'Awake'
material). They were also having a 'session' with Dave Mustaine.

When asked what he thought of the DT song, Dave did a 'snoring' noise. So I
don't actually think he likes them after all :-)

I don't think you shoul d worry since after listening to aCoS DT has already
learned more about the studio way and can take charge of their sound...

BTW... you guys know how somebody was talking to Derek(I don't remember who)
and he said that they didnt play any songs from WDADU because they were 8
years old... what if by the year 2000 they stop playing songs from I&W?
spooky thought, huh? I doubt it'll happen, but you never know...

    Hey there jammers -

I am going absolutely crazy with all this snow on the ground and thought of an interesting new thread. I believe that similar riffs in DT's music has been discussed, but how about same riffs from different bands' music??

I can think of a couple off the bat:

The bass line from Bush's "I don't want to come back down. . . " song & Bon Jovi's "You Give Love a Bad Name" EXACTLY the same (both in B minor)

The opening riff in Styx' "Suite Madame Blue" and Zepplin's "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" (Styx is in B minor, Zep in A minor)

I have a couple of more, but let's see if anyone get's them. Let's use our imagination too =)

    Hello jammers

I have a QR cd for sale if anyone is interested. It's a U.S. only promo cd called "Evolution Calling" and is a compilation from 1990 featuring tracks from the EP and first four discs. The track listing is: best i can, i don't believe in love, revolution calling, walk in the shadows, take hold of the flame, queen of the reich, the lady wore black, the warning. All this for the unbelievably low price of $20 including postage. If you are interested please email me privately and don't post to the jam.

Thank you Elliott. I was wondering why that sounded so wierd on TDoE. I thought the tape skipped or something. When DT did ACoS at the shows, during Carpe Diem when James sings: "We can learn from the past, but those days are gone" and James holds out the "gone" and over dubs "We can hope for the future but there may not be one" how's he do that? Does he just hold out the "gone" like he does in TDoE and blow off the last line? Or something else?

    >he odd measures are quite simple, not as in Learning to Live : I >cant even play the intro along with 'my' drummer

Suggestion: Put on some earmuffs, and/or earplugs so you can't hear the drums, then play straight quarter notes. :-)

Hello ytsejammers! My name is Alessandro, I'm 21 and I'm from Italy. This is the first time I write to ytsejam and I'm very happy for having joined the mailing list. I have received my first digests and, at the beginning, I felt a little "confused"... all those messages!

I listened to DT for the first time in 1992; I bought I&W without knowing nothing about the band and what kind of music they did. What a risk! :) It was a great surprise... I must say it! The music on that CD grabbed me since the first time I listened to it. It was so unusual to me; I had no great knowledge of progressive music and I had never listened to something like I&W before. Amazing!

So I'm here to discuss with you on everything about Dream Theater and I'd like, expecially, to know if there are some Ytsejammers from Italy or from Southern Europe.

If you're out there, why don't you Email me?

I can see much clearer now I'm blind "Ora che ho perso la vista ci vedo di piu'"

John Myung is practically a bass god, up there with Michael Manring, Jonas Hellborg, Geddy, and Jaco. Check out his line doubling Petrucci at 12:30 into ACoS. Anyone know if he's still using a Tung? My brother swears he can hear Bach influences in Mind Beside Itself, especially Erotomania. I think I can, too. James LaBrie is as good with the vocals as Petrucci and Myung are on guitar and bass. he is the only singer for DT. My condolences go to Mike Portnoy. Mark

Actually, Monument has no keyboards. Those are guitar synths. The keyboardists that do appear are Kevin Moore on At Fates Fingers and Mark Castiglione on Quietus. There might be some more, but those are the most prominent ones.

I'd like to briefly respond to Debbie Seeger's and Dave's (forgot last name) rebuttal to Stefan's post (Digest 1216) regarding how we as listeners should treat rock musicians. Dave, I'm 100% on your side. I couldn't have said it better myself. The way in which DT (along with Rush and Yes for that matter) inspire me is indescribable. Whenever I listen to them, I constantly feel that I have some connection with the music coming out of my speakers. Part of the beauty of any of these bands is that MOST fans are die hard, meaning that we possess that certain fire and passion which moves us in countless ways. We say to ourselves, "How is it that these people can come together and actually compose material with such intricate and definitive patterns and mood swings? How at one moment in a song can there be this nasty hard-edged-sounding section which gets the vital signs going, and yet a minute later something that's so light and airy, almost supernatural that it can move you to tears"? (Take Learning to Live, or The Gates of Delirium by Yes, or The Camera Eye by Rush and you'll see what I mean, Debbie and Stefan) I wouldn't call this behavior childish; more like an extremely undying PASSION which animates us all and spills over into others areas of our lives. So if by chance we should be so lucky indeed to come in contact with anyone in a group who has inspired us in such a way as this, by all means don't feel intimidated to say something like: "Moreso than being able to meet you is the way that your music has reached and inspired me." Something like that. I have no doubt that any successful band member would be pleased to hear such a statement. And, does it really matter what others who may overhear you say such a thing think? Understand; this is your fire, this is the way you feel, so go ahead and express it!! It doesn't imply that these musicians "are better than us," just simply that they've evoked emotions within us that are unparalleled in nature. We're not making them "big-headed ego-maniacs," we just want let them know how we feel, let them know how much their music has gotten across to us. Sure Debbie, obviously I'm not implying that you said this, but if one were to say something like "Mr. X, you're the greatest guitarist ever," or something not terribly meaningful like that, it's possible you'd get some sort of cold response in return. Artists don't really give a damn whether or not you think they're the best; they want constructive feedback which they're actually able to respond to: things such as songwriting, technique, and the like. BTW, comparing Jeffrey Dahmer or O.J. to recognized figures such as musicians or artists?? Not quite. Music has affected me a bit more, personally. Well, thats about it. I'm a bit out of breath considering this is my first post. Hope it's a pleasure to the eye. Later...

Yer SHITtin me! Gene Hoglan rocks! That's a BUMmer.

You know, I did the same thing. Get Hemispheres. That's the one that I really like. 2112 and MP just don't excite me.

He said that the song he heard was "the one with the video". Maybe he just got insanely jealous of DT's talent. :-)

Hello Dream Theater fans...My name is Tony Massaro and I play guitar in a band called Torman Maxt. As fellow progressive music fans I'm sure you're probably as sick of the commercialism and lack of artistry in popular music as I am. Bands like Dream Theater, Rush and Queensryche make music really worth listening to and have had a major influence in the development of my song writing style.

I am a bit leery of writing this letter as a form of promoting my own band, but I was hoping for some understanding and sympathy by fellow music fans and musicians who know of the struggle that good bands who don't play mainstream music face. We have an album out now that's called "Just Talking About the Universe...So Far" that was released on our own Mars Hill Records Label. We have received some great reviews world wide as well as some decent mail order sales, but have had almost every "music industry/major label" door slammed shut in our face because we're not commercial and have songs with "too many parts". I was just hoping for a sympathetic ear from some fellow progressive rockers.

If you are interested in checking out our home page, the address is:

Also, I would love to hear music written by any of you out there who play in a band, whether you have a CD or a demo, or even just a live garage recording. I know that there are many excellent bands out there that haven't gotten a legitimate chance to show what they can do. I think it would be real cool to start a network of fellow musicians to present ideas and concepts to each other about song writing, lyric writing, recording, manufacturing CD's, etc.

I hope to hear from you soon...

    Tony massaro
