    Hello Jammers,

the other day I was reading a mag from some months ago and I
encountered the prog/symfo band World Trade who are on the Magna Carta
label. I listened to the CD at my local shop and I can't tell whether
I like it or hate it. The music is rather soft with a prominent bass
guitar, while the guitar is most of the time in the background. The
vocals sound really good but the melodies are very weird. It will
probably take some weeks before I buy the damn thing (money), but if
anyone has the album let me/us know what you think. Regards!

    Gerralt Partiman.

What do you mean? The song? It appears on the first album, When Dream and
Day Unite, originally released on Mechanic Records and currently out of
print although you may find an import. Alternatively, Mike Bahr has put
together When Dream and Today Unite - all the tunes from WDADU played live
and sung by LaBrie (except Ytsejam of course).

Brian "master transcriber" Wherry has a MIDI version of ytsejam that he's
gonna send me and that I'm gonna put up on my ftp site - accessable via my
web page (which loads the fastest because there's nothing on it as I
prepare to redo it). I'm gonna split up the parts too and make them
available in Emagic's Logic format as well as MIDI.

    Hi Jammers,

I know that there are several musicians on the jam, and I have a
question to those. I recently got email from a companie called
FederalRecords, wich plans to release a CD compilation with several
"newcomers". The company claims to be in contact with major labels. I
wonder if anyone in this list also got mail by them, or has heard
    anything about them.

Thanx for every information you can give me in advance,

    till later

Bombay Vindaloo on the album "Guitar's Practicing Musicians". It's like
Volume 3 or 4 or 5, but I was wondering if it was anything like the Live at

OK, I guess I dug myself into a bit of a hole here.

Part of what I was trying to say is that there's a right way and a wrong
way to approach a band member you admire. I've done it the wrong way (if
anyone wants to hear about the time I met 4/5 of Fates Warning you can mail
me personally.) I wouldn't be surprised if some of you have made the same
mistake. I also realize that comparing bands to people like OJ and Dahmer
(I'm from Milwaukee, OK?) was a bit too much.

Maybe I'm just too damn intimidated that I can't write like DT or others
that I admire like them. So what. I'm musically inclined, but not
particularily talented. Does this make me a lower form of life that
someone who has a recording contract? Of course not. I'll shut up now.

the tape tree thing is coming right along. remember that thursday
is the last day to submit your name.

i have enough DAT>analog and analog>analog people, so all i need now
are more "leaves" that is all you do is send your blanks and return
postage to the "limb" above you. as it is now i dont think anyone
will have to make more than 4 or 5 tapes. the leaves dont have to
own any equipment or make any tapes, so if you want a tape of the
12/29/95 birch hill dream theater show, be sure to email me soon
    and let me know.

i will be posting the entire tree structure early next week probably
and i will be notifying the DAT people before that so they can go
ahead and get their DAT blanks sent to me.

    later..

HEY! Could someone be SO kind as to dub some of these nice little
bootlegs for me? I'm willing to pay (although not extraordinary prices,
as I'm trying to save up for one of those guitar effects procs ...).
if anyone would be so kind ... also, does anyone know where I could look
for bootlegs of DT around the washington dc area? i'd like to know ...
    thanks!

ok - now for commentary on a song or two -

did you hear the neato trick petrucci does on "To live forever"
(the Lie single), where he's sliding his hand down the G string, hitting
all the harmonics on the way down? I think it's pretty cool, it's
something new to add to my 2years and growing guitar arsenal ;).

ok, no more from me, i gotta go practice. !!

Mike: Your mail finally arrived after months of floating round the
system. I'll mail you a copy when we finish recording. Send me a snail
    mail address.

If anyone else is interested in our little DT/Q'ryche/Marillion type band
and wants a copy, mail me, or check out the WWW Site at:
            http://iamac.st-andrews.ac.uk/ExMachina/
for more info on the band.

I lost access to my account for a while, but seeing as the University is now
employing me, I'm back. Seems like there's UK Jammers coming out of the
woodwork everywhere. You'd be amazed how many DT fans there are in a town
this small, but most of them aren't on the Jam.

Lastly, my condolences to Mike Portnoy. I went through the same last
May, so you have my utmost sympathy.

Time to go, there's still far too much pre-production to be done....

[I corrected a few typos in the interview--kbibb]

    Hi there...

Wouuaw !!! What a surprise when I was buying the new HARD ROCK 'Zine, January Edition : I read 'DREAM THEATER INTERVIEW' !!! Yeeees !!! And not a small one, SIX PAGES !!!, including 3 snapshots, and a list with indispensable CDs for all of you, Progressive fans...

Sorry, the interview is in French, so I translate the essential (And what I can) ;-)

Hard Rock : On ACOS, we found a lot of covers, but not all of them you've played. The Choice of the songs weren't too hard ?

M.Portnoy : Oh Yeah, It's was very difficult ! At the start, we've choice to put just some of them on ACOS, and our label (Warner) just wanted include one or two covers. Then we said "Forget it ! Let's make a full cd man !!!"

H.R. : For the concert, you invited a lot of guests, especially those from the progressive scene : Steve Hogarth, Steve Rothery, Steve Howe, Steve Hackett...

M.P. : All the Steves from progressive rock were there... (laugh)

H.R. : Okey, but it wasn't by chance...

M.P. : Yeah, it was depending their own occupations ! When the rumour about our special concert was know by many guys, a lot of them contact us. A the beginning, this concert was organised because many guests were free in London that day. And not necessary guys from the progessive scene. For information, we have contacted Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne and Glen Tipton from Judas Priest...

H.R. : What about the missing covers on ACOS ?

M.P. : All titles we played with guests don't appear on ACOS coz we wanted that CD still be only played by DT ! But we played "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" from The Beatles with Steve Hogarth, "Easter" from Marillion with Hogarth and Steve Rothery, "Damage Inc" from Metallica with Barney Greenway from Napalm Death -A very interesting one-, and a last intrumental medley (20 minutes long !) with Steve Howe, including exclusively titles from YES : "Machine Messiah", "Close To The Edge", "Starship Trooper", "Hearth Of The Sunrise" and "Siberian Khatru". So, we played some songs with our traditional line up : "Tears" from Rush, "Red Hill Mining Town" from U2, "In The Dead Of Night" from UK and "Winter" from Tori Amos.

H.R. : You've choice to play a title from Genesis, epoch Phil Collins ! It's surprise me !

M.P. : Yes, it's strange ! I prefered to play something like "Firth Of Fifth", "Supper's Ready", "In The Cage", from the epoch Peter Gabriel. But when we worked that medley, "Turn It On Again" was THE perfect conclusion !

H.R. : Will DT play another gig like that ?

M.P. : Yes, I think so. The idea of this first secret show in London was mine ! If it only depending of me, we'll play a gig like that between each albums and/or at each new tours ! Since this concert, fans say "Argh, We need another one like that !" (laugh)

Tired ! End of Part I... So live another day !

    Hey all you Ohioans!!

I just heard from a friend (and drummer) that Mike Portnoy is tentatively scheduled to do a drum clinic at Hauer Music in Dayton this summer. That is all of the info that I have for now. My friend is going to let me know as soon as he finds out more...

I just thought you'd like to know *before* it happens...

    Hello Jammers:

I have recently acquired quite a few bootlegs, and I am curious as to the names of some of the instrumentals that they play live.

First of all, I know that the instrumental before TTT is Puppies On Acid, and The solo at the end of TLF is Moon Bubbles. How about that Jam on Lost In the Sky? Anyone know? Also, could anyone direct me to a bootleg which has Barfbag on it? Thanks alot.

On with the new and improved jams!

    -Scott

I just picked up the new Alex Lifeson solo project, "Victor". I had heard that his band consisted of Edwin from I Mother Earth and Les Claypool from Primus. That's only partially true. Edwin sings on 5 tracks and backs on one. Les only plays on one track. There are three instrumental tracks, three tracks with Alex on lead vocals, and one with someone named Dalbello(female) on lead. Anyone know who she is? [I answer this in a separate post--kbibb] The first song is very heavy, kinda repetitive, and not very representative of the rest of the album. Not bad, but a large surprise coming from Alex, who wrote or coed every song. Second track sounds a little like Presto-era Rush. Pretty good, IMHO. Edwin sings very well here. Third track has Dalbello on vox. She sounds ALOT like really old Geddy when she isn't at conversational level. Unusual song. Has some rhyming slow parts which change into Roll the Bones-sounding guitar riffs. Nice guitar solo about halfway through. Fourth track is an instrumental. Heavy on the synth and keys in the intro. Got a little Satch flavor to it, but not near as technical. Fifth track is Alex's first on lead. Kinda spacey keyboard intro for about 2 and a quarter min. til the guitars kick in. Very mellow and trippy. Alex's vocals are a monotone speech kinda quiet. The backup vox come in for the last verse. Cool sound. This one doesn't rock much, but it's still good. Nice guitar solo outro. Sixth track rocks a little more. Has a cool bass call-guitar response groove to it. Noticeably good drumming by Blake Manning. Anyone know any more about him or Bill Bell(guitar)? Seventh track is a funky little instrumental with a great bass guitar groove. It's got some samples of women bitching about men's personal habits. Kinda funny in a weird sort of way. Alex's voice tells them to SHUT UP! at the end. He completely flips out. Eighth track is another instrumental. Kinda eastern sound to the intro. Mellow and laid back. Alex uses some cool effects. Ninth track ROCKS! This one has Les on bass, but you can't really tell. It's very heavy and kinda industrial. Edwin goes back to his usual raspy vocal style. Tenth track uses a poem called (surprisingly)"Victor" by W.H. Auden for vox. No guitar. Just keys, bass, horns(?), and Alex on vox reading the poem in a semi-monotone. I don't like this one much. The last track rocks in a little more Rushian style. I like the intricate background guitar on some parts of the chorus. Edwin manages to squeeze both of his vocal styles into this one. Overall, I would probably recommend this to anyone who is a major Rush fan. There is a lot of Rushian influence, but it is DEFINITELY not Rush. It's only moderately progressive, but it covers an intriguing amount of musical ground. If you pick it up, let me know what you think via email. Enjoy!

    Later, Andrew
