36 year old Lisa Dalbello is a Canadian singer/songwriter who Kerrang!
described as being "the elite of the elite". She's probably best known
among Ytsejammers for having penned "Gonna Get Close To You" that
Queensryche covered on "Rage For Order". She's also written songs
that have appeared on Heart and Helix albums and has contributed
backing vocals on a number of albums (including one by Cher).

The easiest-to-find track by her band "Dalbello" is "Black on Black"
off of the "9 1/2 Weeks" soundtrack. (It also appears on her album
"She" (with a Queensrychian intro)--I don't remember if the cool intro
    is also on the soundtrack.)

She looks kinda like a black-haired Michelle Pfeiffer in some of the
black-and-white pix that I've seen of her.

I believe it was Ben Laussade <Ktulu> who had the idea for the letter writing campaign to get DT onto the David Letterman show. I think this sounds like a good idea. I can't imagine a thousand letters getting to Dave all about the same thing and him not saying anything about it. It's not like Letterman <or his producers> have to worry about which band is going to earn them the most money! And if we get no response from Dave, we try Conan. Now there's a guy with nowhere to go but up!

    > What aspect of Dream Theater music is it that you like? [deleted]

Oh, cool, essay questions. Those are my favorite. The first DT song I ever heard was "Pull Me Under", on the radio. At the time, I was trying to learn more about metal music, and I was trying to learn to like. Actually, by this time, I had succeeded fairly well, mainly because of the likes of Metallica and Sanctuary. Anyway, the chunky chords at the beginning of PMU were really fun for me - I especially like low-pitched, slower tempo metal. But later, when they brought in some progressive aspects - I stopped digging it and started drooling, cause I've always been a progressive fan (my fav band is Kansas). Then the chorus arrived and I was very intrigued. The melody of the chorus is catchy, the words are image-provoking ("Pull me under, Pull me under, Pull me under - I'm not afraid"), and there are many passages that reminded me of the Bible (not that I'm a Christian, but I am a philosopher, and I do respect the Bible as a philosophical text). So, I had my heavy metal, I had progressive elements, it was just plain catchy, and the lyrics seemed to be the work of a fairly intelligent mind. I went out and bought the album.

Hi ! Someone asked what aspect of DT music you(I) find the most attractive. Well no essays from me =) The complexity and the heaviness, and the way they work together. 'Nuff said. Oh and I love the keyboard work. First time I ever really heard something like that.

Well..someone asked what song Vanilla Ice ripped off. It was of course the immortal Queen's 'Under Pressure'. Queen lives forever !!! =)

A bit has been stated about people not caring for the intro to ACOS. Since I know that people care, here's my two cents. I am of the opinion that the intro is quite cool. Many decent songs have some calm before the storm and to me, no intensity is lost at all by starting with the new intro. However, I am not really that much of a fan of the "outro" and what gets to me is why do they play the "outro" live !?!

ACOS, at least live, really needs a loud climax and one feels a bit guilty about going crazy when the song (sans outro) ends because you are being discourteous to the band and specifically to JP's mellow playing. But at that point one needs to really vent appreciation. My vote is keep the intro and sack the outro.

    Hi there,=20

Here is the second part of the Mike PORTNOY's interview, Written in HARD ROCK Magazine (January 96 Issue).

H.R. : Does Dream Theater is the principal group with the label "New Progressive Guys" ?

M.P. : I Hope so... In fact, I'm sure ! Currently, the progressive scene grows very fast, but it doesn't touch the 'Big' public contrary groups like Queensr=FFche. Most of new groups are signed on small labels. In fact, we have a lot of chance to play that kind of music and to have a deal on a major ! Anyway, have a look to our sales, and let's recognize that there are people asking this kind of music. I Hope others labels will sign that kind of groups because, at the moment, only some small ones -Magna Carta, by exemple, who's signed Magellan & Shadow Gallery- searchs & signs progressive groups. These news goups have many probems to be know by people, but it's gr8t that these labels exist !

H.R. : What's the thing you bring to the progressive music ?

M.P. : From the opposite direction than older progressive groups, we make longer songs, with a lot of instrumental and technical sections. That were things who are missing these last times... We are influenced by the metal and pop scenes ! We get ideas from the senventies and we adapt them to the nineties. Most of others groups stay prisoner in 'THE' style.

H.R. : English papers say that you're 'snobbish intellectual guys' !

M.P. : I think progressive disturbs english journalists, and it's put me in a temper !!! They says we are pompous ? There are pompous ! These men who're listing to White Zombie (laugh) ! We are much eclectic as them ! Look our fans: 1/3 of them are 'real & hard progressive guys',rather 'Old', with influences like Cactus and Gentle Giant. 1/3 see us like great instrumentists, and the rest of fans : The hard-rockers, who are fans of Metallica, Alice In Chains,... They came at our Gigs 'coz they like one of DT songs they have listened on radios.

H.R. : We often reproach to progressive bands the fact that they're too concentrate on their technical parts, and not on their stage performances.

M.P. : Well, it's a problem doesn't directly concern us. We try to keep a certain skill of energy on stage. Many progressive groups do so many things and there aren't able to move. I remember when I've seen Rush on stage : Geddy Lee sings, plays bass and keyboard in the same time !!! Each musicians are so concentrated that they can't do more on stage. From the opposite direction, groups like Queensr=FFche or Pink FLoyd turn it for their own advantage : They present to the public wonderfull light-show, big screens,... When we play live, we always try to be as energetic as possible. Even when I play difficult parts behind my drum, I 'headbang' like a devil (laugh).

    End of Part 2

Tired and bored to write in english (Sorry for mistakes ;-@)... Next soon... Bruno

P.S. : New about Dave MUSTAINE : He's working on his first solo project ! He says : "I'm doing that because the music I wanna play now can't be compatible with MEGADETH". MegaDave has called Kelly Luma, bassist of SHRINE, Jim De Grasso, ex SUICIDAL TENDENCIES behind the drum with ALICE COOPER while the Sud American "Monsters Of Rocks" and Lee Ving, the singer of the punk group FEAR. Are you Scarred ? heheheh !!!

It has often been observed that one of the rules of bands performing live is that the "releases" or "the singles that were made into videos" must be touched upon from time to time(or in Van Halen's case, at every single show). I don't think DT will EVER stop playing PMU, Another Day, TTT, or Metropolis. However, I do see WFS, UAGM, and Surrounded biting the dust in the years to come. Who can tell about LTL...

    1. I read recently that John P. sings backup live on "The Silent Man", but I noticed that on "Voices" (on CIAW live cd), there are backup vocals in the "I'm kneeling on the floor..." section. Is this John P. also? 2. When DT plays "The Silent Man" live (listen to CIAW live cd), who plays rhythm guitar during the brief solo section (just before James sings "Sin without decievers, A God with no believers...")? this is regarding the post about DT not wanting to play WDADU songs.

think about the bands that have been around 'forever'. the rolling stones, pink floyd, the eagles, etc. all play songs that are much, much older than 8 years. imagine playing stuff that you wrote 20-25+ years ago? talk about things getting old.....

by the way, just got my copy of the japan ppv video. COOL! the quality is much better than i had expected.. i thought the band's performance was good, but james' voice sounded like it was completely trashed. there was a few times that it almost sounded like he was in pain.... it's gotta be rough to have to sing as high as he does night, after night, after night.......

by the way, didn't i already say that? i'm interested in any progressive bands, especially unsigned/'unknown' ones. i already ordered superior's CD. i recall a few bands mentioned that ytsejammers are members of. if anyone has info on any of these bands, email me. i'm always looking for a new CD to buy....
