I like that JP is playing 7-string. There's nothing cheesy about that at
all. Classical guitarists often play 7-string classical guitars in order
to get more lower register. What about long-neck guitars or baritone
guitars? These are also used often by classical guitarists.

Downtuning, on the other hand, I am not a big fan of. Dimebag Darrell
said once in his GW column 'if you tune down to D your riffs will be
heavier than shit!' <I'm paraphasing.> BULLSHIT! If you tune down to
D your riffs will be a whole step lower! Heaviness, in my opinion, is
measured by the composition, not the pitch. Downtuning you guitar to
make your riffs more heavy doesn't help you at all. It's pseudo-heavy.
It's the easy way out. If you want to write heavy riffs, you need to
be dumped by your girlfriend, or lose your best friend to a drunk driver,
or be told you only have a certain amount of time left to live. Well, not
really. You just need to be a good enough composer to present these feelings
to your audience musically. Then your riffs will be heavy because of what
you put into them, namely YOU. Listen to the Pull Me Under intro. Heavier
stuff cannot be written! Just because Soundgarden uses tunings like BBEEBE
people think they're heavy. I don't think so.

Downtuning to match the key of another song or musician, however, is pefectly
acceptable. What if you are jamming with a piano or keys player whose next
song is in D? By all means tune down! That's just a really inconvenient key
for an E guitar. Basically what I'm saying is: tuning down for heaviness is
not good. Tuning down to match keys w/ another player or to play EXACTLY what
is in your head is fine.

    Steve Z

p.s.: I like dimebag; don't get me wrong...

The current issue of the German "Gitarre & Bass" magazine contains an
article about the JMP-100. Since you're from Belgium, you might be able to
get (and read?) it. If not, send me a message and I will find out the specs
(I don't play the guitar myself, but a friend of mine does and I
occasionally browse through his G&B magazines...)

and I have all their releases. Their also an incredible live-band. Is
it because the band has a german label, that you gays don't know them?
If anybody has news about the band, please let me know!

P.S - Don't tell me that they've opened for DT once, I allready know that!

It's been a REALLY long time since I've posted here, I guess I've just been
sitting back enjoying all the commentary on the holiday shows, wishing I
    could've made the trip there.

    >The radio presenter asked him what he thought of Dream Theater and
    >he slagged them off!

Well, I know that Megadeth like King's X. I read some interview with I
think it was either Marty Friedman or Dave Ellefson where whoever it was
said that there wasn't a lot of music he found interesting these days, but
that he had some King's X in the CD player in his car, and "they're really
good". So it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Dave Mustaine was into
some progressive bands... My thought upon reading Ben's message was "So?"
    <shrug>

If 6:00 was the first DT song I'd heard, I wouldn't like it either, except
for that cool instrumental bit in the middle where James flails his hair in
all directions, running around the stage like a madman.

ain't it grand how one week we're talking about "torman maxt", and
POOF!!! there appears mr. t. massaro of the same band.

    only in america.

re: wfs transcription. i ran out of manilas, so i will need the manilas from
all you boys and girls sending me stuff at this point (the first 10 orders
are ok, so don't fret). if you can add the postage, that's fine, if not, no
    problems. ok??

oddly, with all these talks about myung as a "bass god", a friend of mine.
who was at the malibu (1st dt experience), wasn't impressed with him at all.
but he's more a jazz guy, so i guess it's understandable. i dig him.

conrad- fuck you and your 85 degrees. you dog!

    re: dave mustaine:
i'm surprised he has even taken the time to answer your dt inquiry in the 1st
place. whatever happened to the "great asshole" reputation he's earned
throughout the years. when i saw him in 92, some guy threw a cap with the
message, "pick here, please." you guessed it, he put a pick there, but it was
    no guitar pick.

all i could say is i hope he didn't have a cold, cause that guy sure would
have. and all night he kept saying, "shut up you asshole, or i'll shove my
guitar up your ass to some guy."

    fallen angel, perhaps?

    that will be all.

This is obviously my first post, so don't all laugh at me now.
I wanted to respond to the letter that Dave Plotkin so graciously took the
time to write to all of us. You said it all, Dave. Being a DT fan (or a fan
of any other band, for that matter) is not all about cranking the music up
and headbanging (although on some of their songs it's sort of hard to
resist), it's about the feelings in us that these beautiful melodies evoke.
The thing that I like most about my favorite musicians is the way that they
bare their souls when they play. When James LaBrie sings about some sort of
betrayal, or unrequited love, or just feeling wonderful if that's what the
song is about, we feel his emotion. It doesn't matter if Kevin Moore wrote
the lyrics to Space-Dye Vest. When I listen to that song I hear two separate
people expressing their pain- one through his piano and the other through his
voice (which is gorgeous). On more uplifting songs such as LSOAD I hear John
M's joy at meeting someone who understands him and touches him so deep
inside, and I am happy for him that he has such a person in his life. And
the way James takes those words and makes them his own, it's almost too much.
I am not ashamed to say I come close to orgasm whenever John Petrucci plays
one of those preternatural guitar solos. Even though I could not play guitar
to save my life, thanks in part to the size of my tiny hands, I can almost
feel his fingers moving up and down those frets at lightning speed as he
releases all his ecstasy, misery, anger, excitement, or whatever emotion is
possessing him in that particular instant.
And Mike Portnoy, well, what is there to say. He's got four limbs that
do the work of eight or nine. Talk about your coordination, not to mention
strength, agility and sense of rhythm. And it's not just the mechanical
movements either. Being able to hit a cylinder with a stick is nothing if
you are not putting your whole mind and body into it. That dude must have a
whole mess of stuff going on up there in his noggen.
So that pretty much sums up the way I feel about Dream Theater and that
godly level of excellence that shines through on every album they make. It's
a shame that they don't want to live forever because the world will never get
    enough of them.

To all you DT fans out there
                                            Love,
                                                  Charone Frankel

I have a something I want to ask. Not a poll or a survey...more like an
    essay question, except more interesting.

What aspect of Dream Theater music is it that you like? Or, since
you may have gotten to the point where you like it all: What aspect of it
drew you in in the first place?

By this, I don't mean how you first HEARD of DT, but when you _did_ first

WHOA!!!!!! My email is packed! I am responding to all the email regarding my
DT Doom2 level in here, because I just do not have the time to reply to all
the mail of been getting about it...here are some answers to your questions:

    1. No, the level will not work for Doom1...it is for Doom2 only.

    2. The level should be completed in approximately 3 weeks. It's a lot of
work, a lot of hours, and I am getting the sounds together for a friend to
       help me edit them in.

    3. I am saving all of the email requests for it, and will attatch the file
in my replies when the level is complete.

    4. To those of you who asked about editing Doom2, I am sorry but I do not
have the time to teach you. I downloaded an editor called Edmap1.31 from a
bbs and taught myself how to make levels...you're probably going to have to
do the same. It is NOT easy, and I really couldn't teach you via email.

    5. I will try to send you some of my completed levels soon, but keep in mind
they are for deathmatch, so many of them don't have monsters in them.]

    6. For those who requested the Queensryche level, I will be sending that to
your email. I have heard that it doesn't run properly on some systems
(because of the detailed lines in it) but so far my friends and I have
encountered no problems running it. Also, the Queensryche level doesn't
have any modified sound clips or actual band images...the Dream Theater
       level will.

    7. If you have sent an email to me requesting DT level, then YES you are on
the list. I had considered charging a small donation for the level($5), but
i have since changed my mind. As a fellow Ytsejammer, I feel that it should
be distributed freely to anyone who loves Dream Theater as much as I do!

That's all for now, and please be patient with me folks...I'm working 2 jobs
and I've been sick, so it's hard to find the free hours needed to create
this stuff. The release will definitely be in early February!

    Hello Jammers !

I'm a new subscriber, 20 years old and coming from France. I'm very
happy to listen all these news about the BEST band 'round the world
(because in france DREAM THEATER are not popular at all !). So thank
you all ... Now, I want to ask all of you some questions :

       - Does anybody knows if DT is going to tour in Europe, and if they're
going to, where and when ?!?
       - I would like to know more about the Ibanez USRG models. I've seen one
in the 94' Ibanez Catalog - J. Petrucci had a purple one with a flamed
maple top. For me it's the best looking guitar I've ever seen. So, if
you have technical datas such as available colors, pickups, hardware
and the price in the USA, don't hesitate !

Everyone thinks James doesn't like bootlegs, but if you listen to just before
TLF on Lost In The Sky, he doesn't sound too mad.

Its kinda dumb that they don't want to play any songs off of the first album
because its 8 years old. Come on! I mean Metallica still plays songs from
Kill Em All (12 years old), and I can't think of any off hand, but a lot of
bands still play old songs. Besides, AFIL, Afterlife, The Killing Hand, and
The Ytse Jam are some of their best songs!

Someone said could you imagine The Mirror on a six string-remember the intro
to Take The Time on Live In Tokyo or most other live shows from that part of
the tour? BTW, is that "Puppies On Acid"? I never knew what POA was.

WDATu shipments are slowly picking up steam. I've packed up to
copy number 200 and I'm getting them mailed with all possible speed.

I want to publicly thank everyone who has been helping out with
dubs of Subcon and Acoustic Dreams for the Jammers... your service is
    very much needed and appreciated.

I had an interesting experience today... it sure livened up a
dull evening... the way a bomb going off can liven up a nearby funeral! I
was making copies of tapes for a few people... Olaf Bode, Chris King,
Jaison John, and so on, and I reached for my CD rack and noticed that the
CD I was going for (DT) was sticking out of the rack a bit. I tapped it
back into place but it wouldn't go. All this while watching TV so I
wasn't paying attention. Well, I figured some dirt or trash had gotten
wedged in there, so I pulled out the CD and stuck my hand in there to
fish it out. WHOA! I was stung TEN TIMES in less than two seconds by a
SCORPION that had taken up residence there!! Talk about freaking everyone
out who was relaxing at my apartment at the time! Just remember, all you
snow-bound Jammers, that living in Arizona has its hazards too! :)

Got stung in the fingers on my fingering hand too. It's hard to
type. I don't know if I can play bass this weekend, but I imagine I will
be able to without TOO much difficulty. It was only mildly poisonous, and
the poison control center had an easy time of it. It's only after an
episode like this that I realize how much we take those services for granted.

OK, on to other things. Dream Theater is, as you all know now, on
a short break prior to beginning the creation of the new album. Expect it
roughly by September. They have stressed that they plan to visit every
possible tour location this time, so I doubt any of us will miss out. The
more I get the lucky priviledge of speaking to any of them, the more I am
impressed. No egos here. I think many of you who are lucky enough to go
backstage on their shows, will find that the best approach to talking to
them is to chat freely about any and all topics. I mean, you gotta
figure: they get to talk about themselves/the band/the songs at EVERY
after-show. As professionals, they indulge our desire to Know More, and
do it with general good cheer. But deep down inside, we all want to make
a great impression on them, and the best way to do that is to just be
yourself. Don't suck up to them, don't put them on a pedestal, don't use
the time as a chance to point out their errors on the albums, and try not
to dwell too much on interview-type conversation as there is usually an
interview somewhere that's already answered it. Just be as natural as you
can (which I admit is DAMN HARD when you're thrilled to meet someone) and
remember friendliness comes off better than interrogation. :) After all,
when the instruments are put away, they do other things, just like we do
when we turn off the CD player.

Since I had been receiving mail of the nature of "how should I
act when I go backstage" and "what should I say if I get to meet them"
fairly consistently lately, I decided to post this to all so that those
who were wondering about it anyway could find out.

Anyway, there was only one final thing that I could offer today.
First off, the orders for Antiquities are coming GREAT, and Scott Herman
has surpassed his Antiquities cover with BETTER covers (if that's
possible) for Legends/Critical Mass and Scenes From a Memory. I can't
WAIT to show it to everyone. And if at all possible, please resist the
urge to mail me asking on the status of your WDATU order, unless I say
I've sent through 200 and you're like number 40. Or something to that
degree. I promise, cross my heart, they're getting sent as fast as I can.
All a request like that does is make me stop taking down the orders for
the day, dig up the orders bin where the Cds are, cram through all the
sorted orders looking for a specific one, to find out it's still gonna be
awhile before it's sent. I really appreciate the incredible patience you
on the Jam have already shown to me in these efforts.

    Take care all!

I finally got a Subconscious CD (thanks Jerry!), and I love it.
One question, though . . . whose idea was it to put Pacman on the cover? :-)

    Subject: ACOS CD Project UPDATE!!!
    Message-ID: <9601151224.AA26949@brulez.si.hhs.nl>

    LIMITED EDITION COMPACT DISCS
Information and Update, Current to 1/15/96

    1. Introduction

Dear Ytsejammers, for those who don't know me (hmm... that's most of you),
my name is Marcel Berkhout and I am the second guy (you all know the first
one) on the Ytsejam list to make bootlegs. I'm from Holland, keep that in
mind if you find any typos :)

Like Mike Bahr I'm not out to scam all of you and make huge amounts of money.
I'm really into bootlegs and this is the perfect way for me to broaden (sp?)
    my horizons (wow!)

As you can see I took the liberty of copy-ing Mike Bahr's update-style.
I think it's something you all are familiar with and easy to read.

    2. What is .................. (still looking for a good name, hint!, hint!)

This was my 4th Dream Theater concert of the year and probably one of the
most memorable 'cause they played ACOS!!

It was recorded on the 8th of July this summer during an outdoors festival
called 'Bospop' (Please don't ask me why it's called that way). Dream Theater
didn't headline the festival, but judging from the amount of people wearing
DT t-shirts most of them came to see DT :)

A friend of mine recorded the show with his portable DAT-recorder and some
great mics, so the quality of the recording is great, especially for an
outdoor show. Aahh hell.... might as well tell you all the truth.... the only
negative thing I can think of is that there are some people (with no vocal
ability whatsoever) can be heard from time to time during the 'easier' and
'slower' songs (LSOAD and Another Day). I hope this doesn't bother to many
    people.

Because DT didn't headline the festival they only played for 70 minutes.

    The setlist was :

    Intro
    Under a Glass Moon
    Lifting Shadows of a Dream
    Voices
    A Change of Seasons
    Another Day
    Pull me Under
    [encore]
    6:00

The booklet will contain actual pictures from the festival, all FULL color
of course! I have some cool ideas for this :)

    3. What is the release schedule?

YES! I have reached the magic number of 100 copies! I'm still not sure about
a release date, but I think it will be around May or something like that. I
need that much time 'cause I have to start making plans first now. I have to
contact the person who took the photos at the festival, the person who prints
    the booklets, etc. etc.

I'll post regular updates to the 'Jam with the progress.

    4. How much will .......... (fill in name here) cost?

I'm not out to compete with Mike Bahr, so my prices will be exactly the same
as his. ($25 base cost) I'm not sure about the postage yet, but I think that
it won't differ much from Mike's prices.

    5. The reservations

Note that the numbers are not CD numbers. Please e-mail me if you see any
    mistakes/typos.

    6. Famous Last Words

To conclude my update I would like to thank everyone who reserved a copy. I'm
really surprised that I didn't get any reservations from Japan. Usually there
is a huge order from the land of the rising sun.

I hope that I can manage to get the project rolling fast now, because there's a lot of work to do for me.

If you have any questions about the project, feel free to e-mail me any time.

    Thanks,

    Marcel Berkhout
