Hey all!

Even though I'm not on the list (for now) anymore, I thought you should
see this.

This appeared in yeterday's University of Illinois at Chicago's student
newspaper. Timely, eh?

"A Change of Seasons"
Dream Theatre <---- (!!!)

Dream Theatre is a five-piece band with a definite penchant for intricately
played, complexly-arranged heavy metal. "A Change of Seasons" compiles the
twenty-three minute long title track (a long-time Dream Theatre concert
staple) and a number of carefully chosen covers of the band's favorite
classic rock songs.

Throughout the album, Dream Theatre performs with the precision of skilled
surgeons. Each of the title tracks's seven different parts are played with
impeccable technique and the band does a nearly flawless recreation of Elton
John's "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding." Ultimately, however, this
precision leaves little room for any real excitement or spontaneity to shine
through. The band compromises emotion for musicianship and consequently robs
its songs of their ability to move the listener on a personal level.
Listening to "A Change of Seasons" is the musical equivalent of eating a rice
cake -- it leaves you with nothing but a bland aftertaste when it's over.

Two Stars --Phil Mole

This from the man that gave "Hempilation" (the reefer benefit album)
three stars on the very same page.

I agree with him partially about the covers. I love them, but they are
rather straighforward (esp. James). But a ricecake? I don't think so.

By the way, there is a listing of a Phillip Mole at UIC under:
pmole1@uic.edu How about that? :)

Toodles!
Glenn

P.S. I just decided to resubscribe!! (I had to change accounts recently)

hi everyone...

i will be sending out the tree strcture probably tomorrow. i have contacted
the DAT branches, and will be sending them the DAT tapes soon. after that
the taping from DAT>Analog and Analog>analog will start.

I have decided to provide DATs that already have fadeins and fadeouts at the
appropriate points to make it easier on the DAT>analog tapers and also so
everyone will have a consisent tape. i will also be sending both DAT and
analog printed j-cards that the branches can copy and send along if they
want. please use the ones i send out instead of a custom one so everyone
gets the same thing.

i will also put a postcript file of the j-cards on my web page in the next
couple of days.

i plan a major overhaul of the web page this weekend, so all of you that have
been looking there for the tree, sorry it is so lame right now :)

the correct url is this: http://www.metronet.com/~lerxst/

i will probably put the tree structure at this:

http://www.metronet.com/~lerxst/music/tapes/tree.html

if it isnt at that direct path, it will be somewhere under the tape page.

anyway, if you need to give me a different email address for you or anything,
email me. if not, dont bother me until after i post the tree structure. :)
this has been alot more work that i thought it would be. :)

later...

Hi all!

This posting concerns the UK jammers, If you're not one, you can skip this.

I read from the Metal Hammer (Jan.1996) that Queensryche's CD-ROM will not be
released in the UK. The same goes for three other similar products, one being
Pearl Jam and the other two I cant remember at the moment. Now ain't that a
drag....

Okay, my turn to offer a new goodie to the Jammers. As some of you know
the Namm show was held this weekend in LA. John was there at the Lexicon
setup promoting their gear (mainly the PCM-80) and did a mini-clinic
kinda thing to show how stuff works and the bass player in my band got it
all on video - front row. We're willing to make copies for people for a
small price, somewhere between $5 and $10 to cover cost of tape, S/H, and
a little to help cover the costs of the plane ticket and event ticket.
I'll get an exact price when I find out how much S/H is and which VHS
tape is prefered ( I like TDK HiFi). This is not in stereo since it was
shot with a portable camera but is pretty damn good quality - so good you
can see almost every movement of his fingers and the time on his watch.
He does a couple mini jams to show the capabilities of the Lexicon EFX
processor and plays to a tape of some stuff he recorded as well as a tape
of Erotomania. The way the camera was directed and the proximity to John
pretty much cut out the background tapes but every note he plays is
crystal clear - especially during the maniacal runs at the end of
Erotomania - good for guitarists trying to figure it out. As an added
bonus he's wearing our (or should I say Jason/Trey/shirtmaker/whoever)
                *YTSE JAM* shirt!!!!!!!!
The cameraman (my bass player Rich) also got in one comment about Wanted:D or
A in to which John responded "that's not me!!!"
If no ones interested, it won't hurt my feelings but it's kinda neat to have
around (especially for trades:)). Like I said, the quality is real good -
only one bad thing: when his dynamics crescendoed or heavy distortion kicked
in, a little bit of distortion in the mic/TV speakers is noticeable but
doesn't cover anything up.
It's 4:30 in the morning so excuse any of my typos and please e-mail me with
any questions or if you'd like to get a copy.

Dave

I think that is the way a lot of us hears DTs music (Bens way of hearing
it...), ie: the polyrythms, I think that if you took all that polyrythmical
stuff out of there they would sound like the "normal" progressive rock group
(okay, they have the melodies, but,...). Imagine The Mirror or Ltl without
the polyrythmic stuff, they would really loose the feel (the songs), and the
mood would be quite different, imagine MP playing along with the guitar
straight 4/4 instead of changing the drumpattern...

This does not limit itself to MPs playing, obviously there are parts played
by the other guys as well, for an example in Ltl (actually all over I&W)
that impose a different time signature.... (okay correct my english musical
terms if they aren't correct, I know my music in swedish terms....:-))

Okay, don't take this the wrong way, you guys who don't consider yourselves
as musicians, this is NOT a way of showing off. 8-0 (WOW!)

Greetings and new books to all in Madison, or Wisconsin in general. I'm
here at UW-Madison, and am probably the only Dream Theater fan on campus.
I'm writing this so other DT fans will post or privately-e-mail me to prove
me wrong. Prog Rock is not very popular up here, and I want to find a few
other people to chat with....or, so I know that there are a few fans of
great music in the upper-mid west.

Hello!
First of all I'd like to tell you that I'm new on this list, so I
may ask silly questions. Excuse me. If the questions I ask have already been
discussed on the list, just guide me to a FAQ or a previous digest, as I
didn't have time yet to read them all.

So, does anyone know whether DT or any of the progressive bands are
going to play in Eastern Europe, especially in Hungary in the near (or far)
future? Of course I'm checking the local media regularly, but I could start
gathering some money for the tickets, if I knew it earlier. I'm interested
in all types of progressive bands, not only the big and famous ones.
Anyway these bands seem to be neglecting our area though there are
quite a few fans out here. I can hardly remember any of them playing in our
country.
Queensryche played here in 1991 as the opening band of the Monsters
Of Rock festival (before Motley Crue, Metallica and AC/DC). But they hardly
played 45 minutes, the sound was far from perfect and I couldn't arrive in
time, so I only heard two or three song. Shortly, it was a disappointing
experience.
The nearest location DT played live was in Vienna, but I couldn't go
and see them because I don't have much opportunity to travel abroad.
I know this is a small country, so we might not fill a huge stadium,
but certainly work it out with a smaller one. I'm looking forward to seeing
them here. But until they realize we're also the part of the civilized world
I must be satisfied with the Hungarian progressive bands. There are quite a
few of them and they're not bad at all.

Here's another essay about what aspects of DT's music I like. Well, I
read about DT in the Hungarian edition of the Metal Hammer Magazine around
the time their first album "When Dream And Day Unite" came out. (WDADU was
the album of the month in the August 1989 edition of Metal Hammer beating
Black Sabbath, Blue Murder and Annihilator.) But I wasn't interested in them
as I was into other kinds of music at that time. I didn't even hear the
album or any of the songs.
The first DT song I've heard was "Take The Time" from the "Images And
Words" album. I've seen the video in Headbanger's Ball and it just caught my
attention. Then they reached the keyboard solo (-- Kevin Moore rules), and I
was simply washed away. It's still my favourite DT song and best keyboard
solo I've ever heard. I think somebody else also mentioned the keyboard work.
That's my favourite too. It cooperates perfectly with the heavier aspects of
their music brought in by the other instruments. And the other thing is that
I listen to a wide range of music, not only progressive, and I like the
pieces from different styles and trends mixed in their eclectic songs.
Since then I keep gathering DT material and I'd like to see them live,
I hope I will soon be able to.
Any Jammers from Hungary or the Eastern European area? Or anyone around
the world who feels him/herself to be in connection with Hungary or
Hungarians? Pleez, mail me. Also in Hungarian if you speak. I've just seen
Jeremy Lakatos' name in digest 1232. Hello! You must or your ancestors must
have been Hungarians. I've found another one named Mantia Andras from Romania.
Hello to you too!
Another question: I've read on the Jam about the new Ytsejam T-shirt
release. I'd like to have one, but it seems I've run out of time to order
it. I'd like to ask how often it is available. I could start gathering the
money in time, if I knew.

Greetings

minutes of each. There WAS about a half hour of band interviews.

Well, Ben. You rule. I remember finally figuring out what was going on and

Dream Theater's writing ability. It just sounds so great and grooves but it

In 'jam 1233, <koggie@> wrote about tapping in a Shadow Gallery song being
some kind of code. I thought the same about the 1st verse music on UAGM. I
thought since Rush was an influence it might be a YYZ morse code type of
riff. So I pulled out a Morse Code chart and sure enough I got an M and an
A right off the bat. I started to think I was going to decode it as
MAJESTY. That would have been cool, but alas, after the MA it totally
disentigrated into gibberish. Oh well, it was exciting at the start.
Someone get an address for the Conan O'Brien show, and we'll hit them both
about booking DT.

Wow. I thought i had to post this.
        I just got a copy of "Milan 1993" (recorded 11/15/93), and it's
awsome. Anyway, I know supposidly there's only been one "recorded"
version of _EVE_ (and it's on Subsconscious (sp)), but i've found another
one. It's just labeled on the disc as "Instrumental", but it's Eve, in
full form. It's a great disc. They also do...

Disc One:

Metropolis / Mission: Impossible - Afterlife / Under A Glass Moon / Wait
For Sleep - Surrounded / Ytse Jam/Drum Solo / Take The Time

Disc Two:

To Live Forever / Another Day / Only A Matter Of Time / Pull Me Under /
Eve / Learing To Live

if you can pick this up, it's great, and worth whatever you pay for it.
Trust me on this.
