The accent difference is also noticable when you compare his singing with
the between-songs patter. I see this a lot with foreign bands, they seem
    to
lose their "accent" (Bruce Dickinson, for example) when singing. I
    remember
reading an article on this once where a vocalist (don't remember who)
    said
    that he did it deliberately.
    >>

Joe Elliot from Def Leppard said this once(it may have been one of the
other band members). They said that rock music comes from America and
you can tell the difference between American rock bands and others, and
that they tried to sound American because it was true to their roots or
something. It was an interesting comment, anyway.

Rip....write those lyrics so we can write some moosic.

    >my main point was that
    >this phenomena often comes about in james' singing. not that he's any
    >less emotional, but that it can be clouded.

From my point of view, it's easier to detect an unemotional singer
than it is an unemotional anythingelser because the music is coming straight
from you, rather than being channeled through something else like a guitar
or drums or something. But, just like Myung's way of showing emotion is
perfection, James' might be singing the way he does. They show HIS emotion,
but might not always show the emotion of the person who the lyrics reflect.
Like, James could be sad one day, and be screaming in anguish during a song
with happy, upbeat lyrics. That's an extreme example, but it gets my point
across. One of my favorite James-songs is SDV. In that song, he uses lack of
emotion for emotion in that he sounds like somebody who's just given up and
doesn't care about anything anymore. That's a cool thing. Yet ANOTHER
thing, is that with lots of DT songs, there isn't much place for emotion in
the lyrics. Take Metropolis. Those lyrics are particularly unmoving. It's
just a faery tale. It's hard to even find a place where super-emotional
    singing would fit in.

    >no, this wasn't a flame . . .

If people are ignorant enough to think that your post is a flame, then let
them take the pointless time and effort to write you about it. It's plenty
easy to ignore somebody like that.

    >Hey! That guy stole his .sig from the same guy I did! I mean, uh, that
    >is...

    Uh-oh. Do I have to report a double-robbery?

    >But I think a majority of young kids would buy a DT ablum just
    >because they opened for VH.

The fact is that kids my age and around my age aren't Musically Mature
enough to enjoy and understand Dream Theater music. So what if they bought
    it? They wouldn't like it.

Maybe in Regards to Rush Tribute Albums, someone should tell the guys that other bands have had tribute albums before they were dead and gone.

Lets see...There was Die Krupp's tribute to Metallica (...and most of the songs were even ok...except every single d**n version of One...*shrug*)

and the Black Sabbath Tribute Album...(so those are the only two I can think of right off hand...:>)

    Hi all

I know there are some Kyuss fans on the Jam, so here is the latest news that I have about one of the best bands (RIP) I ever heard or saw:

The ex-Kyuss guitarist Josh Homme has formed a new band called Gamma Ray (that will surely lead to some trouble, especially here in Germany). Their first single will be coming out State-side on the Ruin label at the start of July. They will also be appearing on one of the small stages at Lollapalooza.

And now a couple of words to clarify some things that arose out of my last post to the Jam (political correctness and so on). It may come as a surprise to some of you to learn that I actually like the music of Dream Theater. In fact, they play some of the best music I have heard, but I do not/will not love either the music or the band. There are very few things that I love in this world (my girlfriend, for example, and most of my family), and I find all of this stuff like "I love this song" or "when I first heard Awake I really cried" quite puke-inducing. The guys in the band are good musicians and they play some good stuff - nothing more, nothing less. They are not gods. Get real. Get a life. I received a load of stuff saying that I should listen to "blah blah" by "Blah" and then I would "love them", and if I didn't, then I must be dead. Well, I guess I must be dead (at least that would explain the smell in my bedroom in the mornings).

Ben - thanks for an intelligent reply, and I quite like Oasis too.

Has anybody heard the debut album by the British band "Dearly Beheaded"? Let me know what you think, as I'm toying with the idea of buying it.

I jus read something about "Alice In Chains" doing an Unplugged show. Does anybody know if MTV have transmitted it yet or if they plan to? Sounds too good to miss.

I'm off to piss on my wheaties (whatever that may mean).

stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de)

    Hey all ....

Someone disagreed with me on my post about dubbing released material. I was more saying don't dub whole albums. I definately think making mix tapes for people who you are trying to convert is a cool thing, I just don't want people handing copies of albums that can easily (or sometimes not so easily) be bought in stores out to other people. If you wanna try and get someone in to a new band or two, make them a mix tape including some of the songs from the band, don't just dub a whole album. I remember 8 months ago or so, someone organized a project where people traded mix tapes of some of their favorite prog bands which people might not know. It worked real well from what I heard. The reason I remember is that their were 2 Shadow Gallery songs on the tape that D-Man got and he played them for Brian Wherry and I on the way to the Birch Hill show and I was blown away, so I bought the album. I would much rather see people making mix tapes with Shadow Gallery, Ivanhoe, Braindance, Glass Hammer, etc on them instead of just making a copy of Carved in Stone or something for someone. With a mix tape like this there is more of a possibility of gettig in to a lot more bands than just one and it gives the person just a teaser of what the whole album would have.

Someone else (can you tell I can't look at the jams while reading this?) said that a lot of people are assuming that most High School kids are in to Alternative rock and we are wrong in doing so. Well, I don't think we are, for a few reasons.

First, what exposure do most people have to music by the time they are getting in to HS? Basically the radio, MTV, and friends. Most of these friends are also influenced by the radio and MTV. What is played on MTV and the radio all day? I know probably 50% of the people on this list, got in to DT because of hearing Pull Me Under on MTV. At that point MTV was still playing alot of "Glam" and Metal bands and rock was definately more prevelant than Alternative music, so Pull Me Under was just a step up for them, not a leap like it is from most of the alternative music today.

Second, most people don't have the money to explore different kinds of music until HS because they don't have the cash to go out and but tons of CDs of different music. I own over 300 CDs now, I know that before I hit 7th grade, I couldn't afford to buy Ice Cream from the Ice Cream Man without asking my parents for cash. How could someone who isn't employed be able to go out and buy CDs from all these bands that we love?

Basically, the point is that most kids up to and usually through HS are exposed to one kind of music and its whatever is being played on MTV and really don't spend the time to explore when they like what they hear. So the assumption definately isn't unjustified.

    Well, that's all from me.

Hey everyone. I posted a while back asking for Jammers' homepages that had music samples, either solo work or band stuff. I got a handful of responses, but there's got to be more of you out there... I just know it. ;)

If you don't remember, I am planning on putting up a page with links to those pages. All of you can get more hits on your web page and I can get more hits on mine too. :) We'd all be helping each other out!

So, once again, if you have a musical project (band or solo or whatever) and you have samples of your music on a web page, please e-mail me with all the info about it. Don't worry, I will include all submissions. Besides, something I don't like, someone else WILL like, so I won't exclude anyone based on my personal tastes.

I do have a feeling that if/when I make the announcement that the page is up, I'll make the announcement and a zillion people will e-mail me, telling me about their web page. I *would* like to get more than a few up for the debut of this page, so once again, I ask any of you with music samples on your homepage to e-mail me with the URL of your homepage and/or the URL of the page that the music samples are on.

-As some have heard, I am a huge advocate of the Magna Carta bands. If you are into prog-rock, I suggest Magellan, Shadow Gallery, World Trade, Cairo, Enchant and Tempest. If you like Jethro Tull, I strongly suggest Tempest.

-As for Marillion, I think most 'jammerz will agree with me, check out Misplaced Childhood, I believe it to be their best work.

-I understand your annoyance of paying money to see VH drunk, but It wasn't just the DLR days. When Van Hagar came to Detroit a couple of years back, all the members in the band were wasted. Eddie even had trouble playing. Apparently, they apologized at the show the next night and said they would make up for it by making that show one to remember, but that doesn't give the people who paid to see them the night before any solace.

-I really enjoy Jars of Clay. I find them to be more in the vein of Toad the wet Sprocket or Toy Matinee. Their songwriting ability is amazing, there isn't a song on the album that I don't like. Also, Adrian Belew produced two of the tracks on the album, "Flood" and "Liquid".

-Yeah, This guy is cool. ;)

-I believe when a person undergoes the Progversion process, they become a Progvert.
