Sorry about the NDTC but I read in the Kiss review posted by Scott Cook
(Thanks for that review by the way!) that Alice In Chains was there. Does
anyone know if that was a one time thing or what. Kiss will be here in
Dallas on Friday and I was wandering (and now hoping) if AIC will be there
also. If anyone has any information I would greatly appreciate it!!!

Yes, they did it and it was broadcasted last month on MTV. It was OK at
best. Mike Bahr and I got into a big discussion about it offline.
Basically, here are the goods and bads of it.

    Good

    ----
Good to see them live -they don't tour often.
Support for some of their mellow stuff ( Sap, Jar of Flies) I knew they
always had the material to do such a show.
    Sound quality was good.
Show to be put out commercially which is cool because their original deal
was to do 4 albums and from what I understand it was quite a struggle to
get them all together to do this most recent one (self titled album) This
      live album makes 5.

    Bad ---

    ------------------------------

Who knows if they will split up. Layne did a project band thing (Mad Season) and Jerry is in the process of putting out a solo album (I heard one song off of some movie soundtrack.) I would recommend getting Mad Season's album. Some really good stuff.

    > I'm off to piss on my wheaties (whatever that may mean). > Uhhh, ok, man. :D I take it that you don't understand what really means? Usually when you see someone who has been grouchy all day long, you would say that about them. It means that someone must have really pissed them off early in the day. :D

    Hello again!

I can understand where some people might me upset over dubbing commercial cd's because the artists don't receive royalties from it, but there's one band that wouldn't have received my money if it weren't for a dubbed tape.

A few months ago a friend dubbed the Superior cd for me. I wanted to hear them but I thought $19 was too expensive for a cd by a band that I've never heard. Since I got my dubbed copy I loved it so much that I ordered the CD. If I wouldn't have gotten the dub of it first though I never would have bought it.

Bottom line: If you get a dub of a commercial cd and you like it, be ccol about it and get the CD. I don't mean bands like Rush or Kiss or Van whoever they are this week. But bands like Superior, Shadow Gallery and Magellan who aren't muti-millionaires and could use the cash.

    peace,

I've been listening to a Queensryche CD I got from the library, and I really like it. Can someone email ME (not the list) the list of 'must hear' albums for Queenryche? I picked up a Steve Swallow CD used. That guy's great. He doesn't play fast (at least on this disc), but his bass (a 5 string with high 'C') sounds awesome. If you're looking for some easy jazz, this is great stuff. Friday night, my brother and I travelled two hours to see a concert of Bach's complete Brandenburg concerti. (For those of you who think this does not belong on a DT list, they're a lot closer than you might think) This was done on the original insrtumentation, mind you. Bach is much better than I ever gave him credit for. Holding up the bottom for the ensembles was what looked like a six string upright bass, called a Violone. I knew better, and caught up with the musician playing it. The violone is the ancestor of the bass. It has six strings and FRETS made of gut. It is tuned DGCEAD. Guitarists and six string slingers: try this tuning. I fooled around with it a bit, and it makes for some interesting music. Mark Tomko spector@dreamt.org -or- btomko@main.glasscity.net

    >to know what other ones would be good to pick up by Marillion.

My personal favorites by Marillion are all from the Fish era. I would recommend the following:

    1. Clutching At Straws - Fantastic lyrics and musicianship from start to finish. Make sure that you buy the CD as it has the bonus track "Going Under". Arguably their best release.

    2. Misplaced Childhood - Slightly more keyboard oriented than CAT, but a strong concept record. Highly enjoyable.

    3. Fugazi - This one should be available for a fairly low price. There are some GREAT songs on this record (Assassing, Jigsaw)

    4. The Thieving Magpie - This is a 2 disc live record and is basically a best of from the fish days. The recording is of excellent quality. It includes a live performance of Misplaced Childhood. If you can't afford to get all three of the above, pick this up. It is a great way to sample their sound.

If you like the Hogarth era stuff, I would suggest Season's End as your next purchase. It isn't as commercial as Holidays and there are some very good tracks (King of Sunset Town, Uninvited Guest)

    >other than Echolyn (still haven't found Ivanhoe) what other good >discs would someone recommend. I know Matt Rosin has only told me >a bunch of his favs, but I'd like more input (no offense Matt :))

If you like Marillion, check out Enchant's Blueprint Of The World. This sounds very much like a mixture of Marillion and Kansas (vocally) and there are hints that the drummer is of the Peart school of percussion. The record was produced by Steve Rothery of Marillion and he guests on a couple of tracks. I love this record from start to finish and highly recommend it. You might also want to explore Shadow Gallery. Virtuoso keyboard playing and excellent guitar work can be found on Carved In Stone. The vocalist isn't a match for James, but his voice seems to work well on some of the tracks that have a foreboding quality to them. I believe Crystalline Dream may have had limited airplay. I believe there may have been a self-titled first release. Both of these artists are on the Magna Carta label. For further information, email magcart@aol.com. If you like the heavier end of the progressive spectrum, you might also want to check out Conception. Their record Parallel Minds, has a guitar driven, heavy, crunchy sound with fewer keyboards. The songs are melodic and catchy, yet not poppy. The guitarist is competent but not outstanding. If you are looking for John Petrucci II, you won't find it with these guys or any of the other progressive bands I'm afraid. Other releases are The Last Sunset, which I found to be weaker lyrically and In Your Multitude which I have never heard. With respect to Ivanhoe, I only have Symbols of Time. I'm not certain of the title of their first release but I think it may be Visions and Reality. The album is definitely DT influenced, but the songs are not nearly as mature and I find the singer's voice to be aggravating at times. (e.g. singing with excessive volume ala Michael Bolton on the record's ballad By A Feeling). The guitar playing isn't awful on this record, but for a band that everyone raved about, I just don't see what the big draw was. He is miles from where John is. Then again, everyone has to start somewhere. You might also want to look for Lethal's record called Programmed. They are heavy in the Queensryche vein and the singer bares a slight resemblance to Tate in the Warning era. I enjoy this stuff quite a bit. There are two additional releases. One, Your Favorite God, is an EP. The songs on this are similar to those on Programmed although the production (specifically the rhythm guitar sound) reminds slightly of The Black Album by Metallica (sorry Skadz, had to). The other is entitled Poisoned Seeds (I think) and is supposed to have a more 90s (read grungier) feel. I haven't heard this yet so I can't confirm or deny this. Leviathan's Deepest Secrets Beneath is progressive metal with a multitude of time changes and good overall production. However, the singer lacks the LaBrieish range that other bands of the progmetal spectrum have. They have a couple of other releases as well. Fates Warning is another MUST buy. Start with Parallels and Perfect Symmetry if you want the more melodic material or buy Chasing Time as an overview of the band's releases. Finally, I would recommend Crimson Glory. The first disc is self-titled and bares a strong resemblance to Queensryche. The standout track on this disc is Valhalla. You would swear that this was a QR demo. The second record, Transcendence, is also good, with a more melodic and somewhat more commercial sound. The instrumental production isn't quite as good though and I find the bass and drums to be a little light at times. However, songs like Painted Skies and Lady of Winter make this a great listen. There are ample amounts of harmony guitar leads as well. The third release is entitled Strange and Beautiful but I believe that it has been deleted. If anyone in Canada has a copy of this and wants to sell it, please email me pronto!! Your best bet would be to do a Netscape search for progressive-metal in Infoseek and visit some of the pages you pull up. Erik Welty publishes a progressive metal list which I have found to be VERY useful when record shopping, although you might look like a bit of a dick carrying around a file folder with you when you go shopping. :) I did this the first time I DLed a copy of the list.

I'm very happy to hear that actually. I would have though that many of the kids who listen to VH would be stuck in 4/4 mode. :) I was 15 when the first VH record came out and although I liked ELP, old Genesis and Yes, nothing went over better at parties than Running With The Devil. Different tastes for a different time perhaps.

    >the DLR VH boots that I have, there are hardly any lyrics b/c DLR was >too trashed to sing... thats not what I want when I pay $35/ticket.

Point taken. Dave, much like many other rock vocalists of the 70s, did like to overindulge in alcohol frequently (among other substances I suspect). You're quite right in saying that you don't need to spend $35 (in Toronto you are looking at $45-50) to watch someone stumble around and mumble his way through two hours of lyrics.

OK. This is what I propose. All of the American fans can bring their limited edition posters and T-shirts with them and we'll challenge them to a beer drinking contest with the winner getting the spoils. I would be willing to put up my 1979 Alex Lifeson HIWATT guitar head as collateral. :) NOT!!! In all seriousness though, how are you planning on getting there if you go? Are you driving or flying? Second, if any of you in the US would be willing to email me privately with info on how I could get some I&W or Awake shirts, PLEASE DO SO!! You can't get that stuff anywhere here and I would love to have one. Just one!!

He is older and (wiser??). well, I would think since the money hasnt been coming in like it use to maybe he changed a bit??? This is a chance to make some real good money again for Dave.
