The wrath of Adam, after his workload lightens up a little bit. More musings:

Oh well, I guess I'm in the minority, reading Ernst Mayr and all.

Back in '92, my band played a little crappy club gig with a grindcore band.
We closed with "The Trooper." Inspired, they did, too....but it was some
weird sounding shit, man. The bass player just about hung....though I think
it's one of Steve Harris' easier tunes to take on....it ain't "ROTAM" or
    anything....

Yeah, "2112" is the obvious call. "The Fountain of Lamneth is one second
short," and I think it hangs together pretty well, though it IS a little
weird. But has no one here ever heard of "Thick As A Brick?"

No, but I DID go to the show (the first one) she did at the Paramount in
Oakland on the 12th (and just a five minute drive from my digs in Alameda,
no less!). She was awfully good, but I hadn't seen her before....she played
most of the tunes a lot more rubato than I'd have done. Letting a song
breathe is done thing, doing CPR at the end of every phrase is quite another...

    Dear jammers,

Hey there! Just wanted to let you know that we are now accepting checks
for pre-paid admission to the YtseCon III. The pre-paid price is $20 per
person. However, if you pay at the door, it will be $25 per person. I
set up an account for the convention, so you can write your checks out to:

    YtseCon III

    and send it to:

    Jeff Chew
    350 Broadway, suite 703
    New York, NY 10013

When you send the check, please include something that says your name,
e-mail address, phone number (optional), and the number of people you plan
on bringing along (well, it'll be obvious by the amount of the check).

Also, to remind you, we are also now accepting checks for hotel rooms if
you plan on staying at the La Guardia MArriot. It's $100 per room per
night, but you can always split a room with a ytsejammer (it'll probably
be more fun that way anyway). Let me know if you need someone to
split a room with. Send checks to the same address above, and
also make the check out to 'YtseCon III'. However, if you do plan on
reserving a room, I'd prefer if you leave your phone number so I can
    contact you for any reason.

If you need airfare, Rich Worldwide Travel can book you on a flight if you
call at 1-800-431-1130. Just say that you are going to the 'Dream Theater
Convention'. They'll know what you're talking about.

Well, that's all from here! I hope to hear from you, TTYL!

    Yours,
    Jeff =)

Hahaha! Now THAT is a classic Ytsejam quotable! I agree with
you though that singing that high is difficult. Once your throat
becomes fatigued, your tone just dies and then your range disappears.
It's almost like having a hamstring cramp in your throat.
I can get through most of the stuff on I&W and some of the
stuff on Awake. However, the scratch vocal that James uses is very
hard on my throat and I can't hit those notes if I scratch them. I
have noticed that the high passages on Innocence Faded and 6:00 are
sung cleanly. Maybe James has a point where it becomes uncomfortable
    for him too.
My normal range and tone is similar to Geoff Tate around the
Rage For Order and Mindcrime period. I am pleased with that and am
well aware that I'll probably never have the range or vibrato
technique that James does. The operatic training he got from Rosemary
Burns has done wonders for his breathing and his vibrato is damn near
flawless. It almost sounds like a voltage controlled oscillator it's
    so precise!
Actually, I seem to recall a discussion about the Jammers
getting together to do their own renditions of some of the tracks, at
least vocally. I think Brian Wherry might be the only JP on the Jam.
:) Are there any plans to actually do this? I would love to be
    involved in something like that.
If any of you were going to do a take on one of the songs
vocally, which one would you choose? Personally, I would choose To
Live Forever. That's the song I can best emulate.

    Cheers,

    Rick

Whoa there....you really, truly, actually think that Inside Out is heavier
than Awake? No way! It's not even darker. I'd venture to say that Inside Out
is more progressive than Awake, with the exception of Erotomania. Erotomania
is the only song on Awake that makes me think "PROG!!!!". The rest are just
other styles with odd time signatures and exceptional talent, ranging from
new age rock (6:00) to blues (Scarred [intro]) to metal (The Mirror/Lie) to
alternative (parts of Voices). It's still awesome, don't get me wrong...but
not that proggy. Erotomania has the main groove in an odd time and has the
neoclassical stuff in it too (guitar solo).
Inside Out, on the other hand, sounds very proggy (to me). That IO
sound is the only time I've ever heard anything like that...FW has a very
unique sound on that album. They also incorporate odd time signatures and
quite a bit of talent, and to me, that's Prog.

    >2. you dream of the reality you are unaware of
     3. you dream of everything that happened to you that day or something you
were thinking about before you went to bed, only all mixed up.

I've had dreams, then woken up and realized why I dreamt about that.
Like, a few nights ago I dreamt that I was running around killing all these
people (which was a little unnerving), but it was because somebody (Rip, D)
was talking about Duke Nukem 3D before I went to bed. So, I dreamt about that.

I think we exPECTED you to do exactly what you did. We WANTED you to just

    >These days however, I'm refraining from listening to a whole load
    >of CDs because they'd remind me of my girlfriend who just dumped me.

    No thanks. :-)

    >Life's a bitch and then you die.

Celebrate we will, cause life is short but sweet, for certain. (cheer up, man)

    >Yes, but 2112 has to have breaks in order to allow the story
    >to flow smoothly. Remember that after confronting the priests, he is
    >very distraught and collapses from exhaustion into the dream.

Which makes my point..it's one story spread over a few songs.

Wanna know what a good idea is? Listening to music with earplugs in. That
way, when you turn it up loud, you can still FEEL the music (which is why
it's fun to turn it up), but it doesn't hurt your ears. On the subject of
bass drums (which I'm bringing up because i want to, dammit), I like the
Awake sound more than I&W. I&W is a click. Awake is a boom. Bass drums
aren't supposed to kick. They're supposed to boom. Fast double bass lines
sound better as a low rumble (to me) than they do as somebody clicking their
    fingernails on a desk.

I just saw the Pumpkins last Wednesday at the US AIR Arena. I think
this was the eventual last show of the tour due to the keyboard
player's death and the drummer being arrested.
    <<<

The drummer was released on bail and has a court date for July 30. As
far as the tour goes, the dates until July 27, I think, have been
postponed, the rest of the tour will go on as scheduled. I don't mean
to sound heartless, but the keyboard player was a hired hand so to
speak and can be replaced. And the band's attorney's can postpone the
trial for at least a year.

I know it's not hip on *this* list to enjoy bands like the Smashing
Pumpkins, but htey're one of my favorite bands and I hope they don't
cancel the tour, especially since I have a ticket to see them at The
San Jose Arena in August. :)

oh, I will consider it. As long as he keeps on posting to the jam he
deserves it. It is people like you who have your attitude that just laugh
at people getting ripped off in trades that make others think it is ok to
ripoff people. I suppose you have never been ripped off? Because if you
have then you would consider my point of view. I post to the jam once in
awhile about this matter and I haven't done so in months. I just did
because Al posted a message after not being around for months. Then there
were all these "Welcome back Al" instead of "Pay up Al" messages.

He seems to be buddies with a lot of jammers. How come know one says pay

Believe me I have considered it a lost cause. Al Balkewicz is a RIPOFF. I

God! How could I have been so blind as to miss out on that

    to read.
Speaking of totalitarianism, has anyone seen A Clockwork
Orange? This is Stanley Kubrick at his finest. The movie portrays a
futuristic society where gang violence is as bad as it is in today's
inner cities. The main character, Alex, undergoes classical
conditioning to aversive to him any sort of violence or sexual
stimulation that the state deems unacceptable.
Alex is played by Malcolm MacDowell who played the baddy in
    Star Trek:Generations.
Those of you who like the storyline of 2112 should really
    enjoy this.

even bother to buy the one with the red cover. I can't remember what
    it's called.
If you like them, try to rent or buy a copy of their live
video from the Brixton Academy. They are at their quirky best here and
it's a very entertaining tape. The soundtrack of this show is also
available as a legitimate CD release.

    Smell ya later!

    Cheers,

    >Yeah, "2112" is the obvious call. "The Fountain of Lamneth is one second
    >short," and I think it hangs together pretty well, though it IS a little
    >weird. But has no one here ever heard of "Thick As A Brick?"
    >

Heard it, love it. It does have a break in the middle, but since they were
fitting it on an LP I can forgive. My CD has only the one 42 minute track,
even though the back lists it as two twenty-minute ones. Is this true for
    others who have the CD?

    >No, but I DID go to the show (the first one) she did at the Paramount in
    >Oakland on the 12th (and just a five minute drive from my digs in Alameda,
    >no less!). She was awfully good, but I hadn't seen her before....she played
    >most of the tunes a lot more rubato than I'd have done. Letting a song
    >breathe is one thing, doing CPR at the end of every phrase is quite another...

True. Show was neat, but they had to drive to Seattle last night so she didn't
come out to meet more than the few fans right up front. :( And I was wearing
my Ytsejam shirt, too! I coulda gotten her opinion of the connection between
the two of them. Oh well.

And, now, it's time to play SPOT THE LOONY!

It must be that buy over there in Santa Cruz who just booked $500 tickets to fly
out to New York for YtseCon III!!!! Ugh. Now, I hope that the con is saturday
the 12'th in the evening, right? And the rooms are for that night? Otherwise
I'll need to change my tickets. :) I'm gonna arrive at La Guardia at about 9
a.m. on saturday and leave at 4 or so in the afternoon on Sunday. Anyone wanna
do Meet'n'Greet duties for this left coast Jammer?

    >>Anyway, I am about to move next week,
    >>and I have over 600 cd's. I would like

I knoew someone who kept that many in a bookcase. I have just shy of 200 at the
moment, and I found these stackable wooden crates that hold 60 CD's each.
    They're
about $10 a pop, so it's fairly economical, and they don't have those annoying
individual dividers. I found em at Blockbuster Music.

    See y'all later. ;)
