you'll have to excuse that last post.... my cow got a hold of the
computer and sent it before i had a chance to stop her. :)

    >Somebody also mentioned the Alder's high screaming makes the records
    >unlistenable...I disagree. But, that's my opinion on the issue, and I
    >can see how other people wouldn't like it. That's fine if you just
    >don't likw it, but what I really hate is when I'm cranking Fates or DT
    >and other people make fun of me or whatever when Ray or James sing
    >high, they call it hair-band shit or whatever. That's ridiculous,
    >because all it is is ignorance and a product of the ridiculously trendy
    >society we live in. I mean give me a break, these people were wearing
    >Smashing Pumpkins and Phish t-shirts, does this mean those bands have
    >better more talented singers sing they're trendy? Of course not! It's
    >just a different style, and you have to be able to respect
    >both........even though I find it very difficult to respect Billy
    >Corgan :)

heh... if they rag on you for the higher pitched vocals just wait for a
song like "disarm" or "in the arms of sleep" to come on and rag the hell
    right back outta em.

also- i like the Arch FW stuff better than the later stuff... the music
is kind of neo-thrash... and growing up with a lot of 80s metal bands
with considerably bad vocals i have NO problems whatsoever with Arch or
Dominici, i think these guys are great... and if you think they suck for
singing high, i think youre just closed minded... you cant even respect
the ability to hit a high note on key and give them the graditude of
    being talented vocalists.

hey, any old sepultura fans out there? i'm talkin' the Beneath the
Remains and Arise era stuff.. I just dug out an old Sepultura single
and its pretty damn good... i like the rhythym they put into it. still
havent heart Roots yet, mebbe I check it out :)

How many more people have to die in the music industry before people
open their eyes to the danger of drugs. Am I right in thinking that
once you become addicted to heroine you can't live without it, or
Methadone. Why would you do that to yourself? Someone should compile a
list of people in the music industry have died from Drugs, and give it
to any kid who wants to start playing an instrument.
    <<<<

Unfortunately drugs have ALWAYS been a part of rock and roll and they
always will be. Chuck Berry is a heroin addict and has been forever it
seems. Elvis: 'nuff said! Janis Joplin, Hendrix, Jim Morrison, all the
way up to the "new wave" of Drug addicts: Cobain (he'd still be alive
if he wouldn't been wasted at that time), Shannon Hoon, Sublime's
singer. Then there's the next group: Layne Staley (Did ya see him on
Unplugged?) and Scott Wieland should be dead by the end of the decade.
As long as these bands continue to sell, the music industry will look
the other way. When the band stops selling, they just move on to
another band. That's the way it's always been and, unfortunately, will
always be. The only one's that can do anything at all are fellow
    musicians.

Uh, okay, but I thought Al was kinda cool when we met him in the snow
before the infamous Birch Hell show.

Al, consider yourself flamaged. Tsk tsk.

Shall I mention how long it's been since I sent money (or tapes,
and/or a mailer, framkly I forget) to Brian Cox for a copy of the
Rudess/Morgenstern opening shows on the Home for the Holidays tour?
No? Well, then, okay, I won't mention it's been about six months.
After all, mentioning that it's been about a half-year might be
considered ungentlemanly, and we wouldn't want to do such a thing.

Me neither. I'd have hired a Visigoth to do it for me...or a Mongol....
    or a Fremen...or an Aiel...or a Wraeththu....or a Berserker....or an

Ok cool.. there was this guy who said that he had a prog/metal band and if anyone wanted a tape they could email him...his name was Anthony Sciamanna ..idlike to find him ..since im interested..also ..in the theme of Dt's pants and hair ... i think most of you will agree that .you wouldnt like to see the dreamers in baggy ripped bluejeans and grungy shirts and airwalks (even thou i like airwalks) or with short blue or green hair ..it just doesnt go with their style of music ,i mean i like the fact that they used long sleeve shirts on the videos for TTT and Another Day ..,i dont know but ..when i saw the Japan PPV i was kinda shocked that LaBrie had t-shirt on ..so did Petrucci i think ..and also i kinda got a goodlaugh out of watching Sherinian with something that looked like lycra or something..anyway ..clothes shouldt matter .id listen to dt even if they would dress as circus clowns,if their music remains uncompromised..i have to say (sadly) Metallica's looks right now ..kinda suck and i do think it really influenced their sound .and even thou LOad has some pretty cool songs with cool heavy riffs but ..its missing that "metallica" efect.. all of this of course IMHO!

PS:Did anyone else get a kick out of seing the guy who plays Data on St:tng in ID4? also hes in Phenomenom.. that was cool.. Greetings

    Howdy!

Finally back on the jam. I noticed some of you saying that you don't like Ray Alder's vocals... hey, that's fine! I can't understand why you don't like him, but my best friend HATES Ray... thinks his voice is just awful. He happens to be my favorite vocalist in the universe... but that's all opinion. As for them being metal or not.... what does that matter? And are you saying they aren't metal, but DT is? And would it matter then? Naw... Metal is a cheesy stereotype. Fates Warning is definately Prog, but that's the only way I could describe them.

Yes is King of the long song.

In a previous jam someone mentioned Ivory Gates as being about how life sucks, and dreams are a better reality... I'd say that's half right. I've thought it out to a basic simple answer: Dreams are better than reality because you have control, to some extent. Your mind creates everything. I don't think they mean it as totally an escape from reality, because they say we'd take dreams over reality even if the dreams were sorrowful. I think they mean there's something to the purity and extreme power of dreams... the same thing taht makes us cherish a nightmare just like the dream where you win a million dollars. Heh, but for al we know they could have just come up with some cool idea for a song and written away. It's easy to put meaning to words after you have time to think about them. Fact of the matter is, I don't believe Dream Theater or FW had huge concepts behind all their lyrics. Some of them are just art-sy and cool. I think it's likely that Ivory Gates was written as a single song (Likely Quietus) and then expanded upon until it became a long song. They just themed their lyrcs on the original piece and went on that tangeant. Juat my 2 cents. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------- Chris, Khay, K, Bucketbot, etc...

Hello from front yard flooded MD. Some reactions to previous posts: 1. Pat Daugherty said regarding Al B: >I can't believe he has the gaul to return to the list... Well, Pat, if he has the whole country he can do whatever he wants... 2. Anyway, on a brighter note, I see King's X are coming to the area (DC/Baltimore) on the 2nd and 3rd of August. Anyone going? 3a. Rick Terry said regarding Fates: >Ray does have a tendency to jump around a fair bit on No Exit, >and I agree that the vocal melodies are loose at best. For that >reason, my favourite album is Parallels. The vocal melodies are far >better adapted to the instrumental passages and the songs flow better. >Yet, the album following Parallels, Inside Out, seems to suffer from >the same looseness at times although it is an interesting record >instrumentally speaking. I still attribute the lack of vocal melodies to the fact that (from what I have read) No Exit was written with no singer. Ray then had to put in his own melodies, which had to fit the music. I could be wrong... 3b. Rick also said, regarding John Arch: > Of the older material, Perfect Symmetry has better vocal >melodies. And the stuff with Jon Arch I just can't get into at all. I >find his voice to be nasal in the extreme even though he has lots of >range. I hate to get nit-picky, but John Arch's voice is NOT nasally. He actually sings in the exact opposite manner of what would be considered "nasal." Do an experiment: plug your nose like you were going "pu" then try to sing. Sounds like John Arch, right? (well, not as good) but, when you do that, you are ELIMINATING your nasal passage in the act of singing, therefore it is NOT nasal. Therefore, the popular definition of what is considered "nasal" is the exact opposite of reality. If you were singing through your nose, so to speak, you would sound normal.

However, there are no guarantees with talking out of your ass... 4. Simon Asselin said regarding Angra: >They have two albums that I know of, Angels Cry and Holy Land. Either one >of them would be a sure hit with Dream Theater fans and are hugely >recommended along with Superior by people I know and the general internet

    >buzz. Unfortunately, they are not available domestically, so you'll >probably end up paying more than a local CD to get them, but you won't >regret it! I prefer Angel's Cry to Holy land because it is more in the "power metal" genre than Holy Land is. Holy Land is more experimental, and therefore may be more appealing to the prog-loving fans of DT as opposed to the metal-loving fans. >I know someone who has a France edition of the Holy Land album, and it >included an extra live acoustic EP featuring Angels Cry and two other more >folkloric portuguese (or is it spanish?) songs... It is Portuguese, Brazilian dialect. Brazil is a Portuguese-speaking country. See you all later. Maybe on IRC. Maybe not. -- Kevin (kwmadden@usa.pipeline.com) GO PACKERS...GO WINGS!!!

I see what you mean as far as separating them into tracks so you can easily skip to different parts, but IMO keeping it as one track makes it feel as if it were one song.

Maybe in version 0.9 of my CD player program I'll allow to combine tracks as one song. This way those who want it to be separate tracks and if it's that way on the CD, it will appear that way. But for those who want to combine them (like with the last song on Shadow Gallery's CIS CD), you can set that and see it as one track with each individual track being an index that you can jump to by clicking in the Index box.

    A story:

I'm sorta lounging around today because Bertha has kind of blown my cookout plans for the day, and I'm channel surfing. Somehow, I end up watching "NBA Inside Stuff" and they're doing something on Olympic Team Handball (ostensibly because on of the alternates on the U.S. team is John Havlicek's son).

Anyway, I'm not paying much attention to the interview, when suddenly the background music to the piece changes - to "6:00"!

I immediately (well, after the piece was over :)) decided to share this moment with all of you, so I fired up my PC to smack out some e-mail. Windows 95 booted up, it grabbed the CD in the drive and started it up, and guess what started playing...

Yep, I was simulistening to "Awake" on IRC last night, so for the second time in less than 5 minutes, I got an unexpected blast of "6:00"

This could turn out to be an excellent day after all...

    ~ Kevin (kwmadden@usa.pipeline.com) asked: >2. Anyway, on a brighter note, I see King's X are coming to the area=20 >(DC/Baltimore) on the 2nd and 3rd of August. Anyone going?=20

i'll be there, tho i'm not the greatest King's X fan, but i'm dying to get out from in front of this damned computer and see a good band. look for me: i'll be the guy w/ long hair and wearing a YtseJam t-shirt ;)

~ FW vox: since i started listening to FW when Parallels came out, i'm biased towards Alder. yes, his style, including his lisp -which incedentally, which seems to have disappeared on Inside Out- was a hard to get used to. w/ Arch, it just sounds too...80's, which is why i rarely listen to anything before No Exit. the other reason is Mark Zonder isn't on those earlier albums either -yes, i know Zonder wasn't on No Exit.

~ FW as metal: classifying a band as "metal" nowadays is a bad thing cuz they're immediately grouped w/ everything that sounds halfway heavy. when ppl ask me what style FW plays, i tend to say prog-rock/metal. somehow adding the prog in there makes it less cheezE ;) i'd defly say the pre-No Exit stuff is metal w/ touches of prog. it's interesting to listen to those earlier albums and listen for the little hints as to the direction they'd take on future albums.

FW is also hard to classify cuz no one else sounds like them. they're doing something that no other band is doing. i know a few bands are trying but they can't pull it off. it's not easy to do. i've tried it. i agree w/ the person who said that FW has taken metal to a different level. their next album should pound that fact into the ground.

~ indices on the new FW: i say no. i want FW to piss me off! :) i would love to be able to jump to a certain section, put it on repeat and listen over and over. but by doing that i wouldn't be "getting the point". music is art and meant to be looked at as a whole. yes, breaking it down into little pieces sometimes makes understanding or getting something from it easier but to see the entire picture it has to be looked at as a whole (duh).=20

so for art's sake, no indices or separate tracks!

~ DTC (woohoo!): what time does everyone getting on #ytsejam? i stopped by the other day and =D8 ppl were there.
