Exactly my belief on this song. The lyrics that really connected with me
    were in part
    IV. "Quietus"

"Wishing life were made of lasting visions in eternal sleep. And if that
rest were filled with sorrow, still we'd sleep."

I don't think this generally means false hope though, I'm sure we've all
felt our dreams were much better than reality.

As far as the Ivory Gate verses ACoS new and old, and 2112, these are all
great songs. I generally prefer old ACoS because it didn't have as much of
the cheesiness factor, it jammed much better, and the vocals flowed much
better throughout. 2112 is a classic, not much else can be said. I love the
whole thing, and the tale of the hero discovering the guitar and leading a
revolution was neat I guess. Ivory Gate at first sounded to me like a bunch
of Metallica guitar riffs played together with a few slow parts and one
central theme that crawls up (you know, that great melody on the acoustics,
piano, and finally electrics at the end). But, as with all great music, the
more I listened to it the more I liked it, and it is also a classic. Fates
is probably the best band nobody's heard of.

Somebody also mentioned the Alder's high screaming makes the records
unlistenable...I disagree. But, that's my opinion on the issue, and I can
see how other people wouldn't like it. That's fine if you just don't likw
it, but what I really hate is when I'm cranking Fates or DT and other people
make fun of me or whatever when Ray or James sing high, they call it
hair-band shit or whatever. That's ridiculous, because all it is is
ignorance and a product of the ridiculously trendy society we live in. I
mean give me a break, these people were wearing Smashing Pumpkins and Phish
t-shirts, does this mean those bands have better more talented singers sing
they're trendy? Of course not! It's just a different style, and you have to
be able to respect both........even though I find it very difficult to
    respect Billy Corgan :)

    >"Contol Denied".

I probably don't know much more about it than you already do, but I'll tell
you what I know. Apparently, things got all screwy with the band during the
Symbolic tour while they were in Germany (after the North American leg of
the tour) and Chuck found himself alone, litterally. Drummer Gene Hoglan
(who is excellent, btw) left him despite having "endured" two albums with
Chuck. Without his contribution, Death crumbled apart, having no other
"regulars" on which to start over (the guitarist who played on Symbolic did
not tour with Death). IMHO, I would not think that Death could have
    survived Hoglan's departure.

Control Denied is apparently not a "side project", Chuck is reportedly
working full-time on it and it is supposed to be a "power metal" band (I
don't know if this refers to a Angra/Helloween/Blind Guardian sound or a
more heavy/doomy style like Fear Factory/Machine Head/etc...) He is playing
    guitar and *not* on vocals.

I wasn't aware of the B.C. Richards info. Could someone please tell me what
kind of singer he is? Perhaps that would also help to clarify what kind of
    band is Control Denied.

Ray does have a tendency to jump around a fair bit on No Exit,
and I agree that the vocal melodies are loose at best. For that
reason, my favourite album is Parallels. The vocal melodies are far
better adapted to the instrumental passages and the songs flow better.
Yet, the album following Parallels, Inside Out, seems to suffer from
the same looseness at times although it is an interesting record
    instrumentally speaking.
Of the older material, Perfect Symmetry has better vocal
melodies. And the stuff with Jon Arch I just can't get into at all. I
find his voice to be nasal in the extreme even though he has lots of
    range.
Parallels might change your mind about Fates. I picked it up
for $6 CDN in a used shop in Toronto and it's one of the best buys I
    have ever made.

    >Hello, i am a new subscriber, but what is this Ivory Gate of Dreams? i
    >want to get it, and what does IMO mean?????

Ivory Gate of Dreams is a Fates Warning track from the No Exit
album. It is an epic and consists of musical variations around a
central theme. I won't say any more than that since there is already
an extensive dialog on this topic occurring here.
IMO is an abbreviation for In My Opinion. It is also a useless
thing to add to a post as one's writing generally does reflect one's
own opinions. Unless you are under the control of the Moonies or
    something. :)

    >Question, I hate alternative, but most is Rock anyway,s

    >Progressive, i mean listen to there CD;s quite exciting writing. And just
    >because it dont have time changes doesnt mean its progressive, i think
    >progressive is intelligent music, ...any ways thanks and reply

I would interpret progressive music as music that uses
existing musical and lyrical ideologies and attempts to take them to
    the next level of evolution.
I don't know about the Smashing Pumpkins though. I really see
them as just another grunge band with limited musical ability. I can't
stand the singer's voice. To me, it sounds like one of the muppets
with a serious case of hemorrhoids. If you like them though, that's
    great! To each his own!
Actually, this raises an interesting question. Can a band be
lyrically progressive while being grunge oriented musically?
            Any thoughts folks?

    >Can anyone tell me what Angra sounds like?

Angra is a Brazilian melodic/power metal band with a few classical /
brazilian (tribal) and prog influences. They have a very tight and
technical sound, and have very good arrangements. The singer Andre Matos
has a quite wonderful voice with an excellent range which could be compared
to Michael Kiske, Geoff Tate (cliche, I know... :]), Ray Alder or James
Labrie (yes, it's a wide comparison, but it's the same style of high-pitched
singer). He also plays piano and keyboard. The guitarists play amazing
melodic and complex power metal riffs and one of them, Kiko Loureiro, is a
shred-style arpeggio/speed picking virtuoso. Drumming and bass playing is
typical of a power metal band, with lots of double-bass drum lines.

They have two albums that I know of, Angels Cry and Holy Land. Either one
of them would be a sure hit with Dream Theater fans and are hugely
recommended along with Superior by people I know and the general internet
buzz. Unfortunately, they are not available domestically, so you'll
probably end up paying more than a local CD to get them, but you won't
    regret it!

I know someone who has a France edition of the Holy Land album, and it
included an extra live acoustic EP featuring Angels Cry and two other more
folkloric portuguese (or is it spanish?) songs...

    I hope that helped...

yo punks. mad props to the homey who gave out that fat information about king's x. guess who'll be picking up his tickets (15 bucks, all ages, for all who care) during the mac music festival next week? hee hee.

anyone going to the petrucci clinc on the 29th? surprisingly, i have heard nothing about it on the jam, so i was puzzled.

anyone checking out the mac festival this coming week in nyc, should run and see bands such as vernon reid, gov't mule, the screaming headless torsos and henry rollins. all very insane, but hey- there's about 400 other bands too. of course, under the listing for all the bands, no prog bands listed.

good to see prog rock is alive and well in nyc! the one band i had hoped to see, who were the closest to prog we'll get pulled out, so no prog for me. damn you all.

just random news i suppose. see y'all. and to all you jammers on the east coast (which is about 3/4ths of the list it seems), watch your asses with big bad bertha. peace.

I'm sorry, but the vocal melodies for Innocence and Another World suck in the old version (Subcon/TDoE). There's no pattern. Just James wailing away on the same note. I don't know if anyone heard(or cares) that the back up keyboardist for Smashing Pumpkins died of a Heroine OD on Friday morning. The drummer was arrested shortly after on possesion charges, and possible "further" charges. How many more people have to die in the music industry before people open their eyes to the danger of drugs. Am I right in thinking that once you become addicted to heroine you can't live without it, or Methadone. Why would you do that to yourself? Someone should compile a list of people in the music industry have died from Drugs, and give it to any kid who wants to start playing an instrument.

I also think that the original ACOS is better than the new version. I miss the Please don't go's. Has anyone else noticed that everyone's parts have changed except Mike's? RUSH's 2112 is best summed up in these words "Interstellar communism". At least that is my take. As for other long great songs, what about " The fountain of Lamneth"? I think that is the forgotten RUSH epic. Also Echolyn's 28 minute song on Suffocating the bloom, Fanfare for the everyday man( forgive me if I got the name wrong). Another great long song is Pink Floyd's " Shine on you crazy diamonds"

    Hi,

I am planning to go to ProgDay '96, and I hope I get to meet some of you there. This is a great way to discover some prog rock music. Peter is putting a lot of effort into this, so lets go out and support this cause and most importantly...have fun.

    Forwarded message ******************************************************************** ProgDay '96 Update #5 (7/6/96)

    Hello Again!

The first piece of news I have will certainly please a lot of you-- DEUS EX MACHINA have confirmed their performance at ProgDay '96! For those of you who missed them at last year's ProgFest, here's your chance to make up for it!

In other news, it looks as though the ProgDay '95 CD will be pressed in time for ProgDay '96! After meeting with Chris Buzby and Michael Bennett at ProgScape II, we are all in agreement that we should do everything possible to get this CD out. Chris Buzby will be finishing up the mixing in about two weeks. After that it gets sent off to be mastered, then it's off to the manufacturing plant. Again, I can't rave enough about what a fabulous job Chris has done in mixing echolyn's and Discipline's sets! By the way, this will be a limited pressing of 1,000 copies on my own label (which I still need a name for if any of you want to make suggestions).

TICKET INFO: Admission at the gate will be $20 Saturday and $25 Sunday. Advance weekend passes are available for $35 (price good until July 31, 1996). PLEASE NOTE: The physical tickets have not yet been printed--I expect to mail out the advance weekend passes no later than the second week of August. As of July 6, I have sold a grand total of 14 tickets. A big thank you goes out to everyone who has and will order tickets! Send a check or money order to:

Peter Renfro 207 South Elliott Road Chapel Hill, NC 27514

GROUP DISCOUNTS: Please inquire to the above address, or call me at (919) 929-8987.

CHILDREN'S TICKETS: Children under 12 are FREE!!! We are trying to organize some activities for the kids. Squonk Opera will be offering a hands-on workshop with their instruments and stage props. This should be a great way to spend the Labor Day Weekend!

CREDIT CARDS: For those of you who wish to pay by credit card, please contact Scott Teasdale at Grand Rapids Compact Disc. Please note, there will be a $5 processing fee ($40 for those who can't add):

    Telephone: (616) 531-1707 Fax: (616) 531-1778

Scott also carries a pretty good selectin of progressive rock on CD!

HOTEL ACCOMMADATIONS: There is a football game at UNC-Chapel Hill the same weekend as ProgDay. For those of you who need hotel rooms, PLEASE make your reservations now! Both hotels below have rooms available as of July 5, 1996. If you are unable to reserve a room at either of these hotels, please contact me for alternate hotels.

Travel Time Inn: (919) 489-9146 Rooms are $40-$45 a night with 'unlimited' occupancy.

Red Roof Inn: (919) 489-9421 Rooms are $59.99 for 2 double beds.

CAMPING: In a future update (and on the Web Page) I will include information about local campgrounds.

DIRECTIONS TO STORYBOOK FARM: If you are coming from the NORTHEAST, take I-95 to I-85 (Petersburg, VA). Follow I-85 to Durham, NC. In Durham, pick up Highway 15-501 South (this is the highway that Travel Time and Red Roof Inn are on). Follow 15-501 until Highway 54 West Bypass joins it. Stay on Highway 54 West Bypass until you come to the exit sign for Jones Ferry Road. At the stoplight turn left and go under the bridge. Follow this road out for about six miles. Just after you cross the Chatham County Line, Storybook Farm will be on your left (the road sign says Storybook Lane). You know you are getting close when you see the three radio/TV antennas. If you are coming from the WEST or EAST, just get onto I-40 and take the Highway 15-501 South exit and follow the same directions as above. If you are coming by plane, it is best to fly into the Raleigh-Durham Airport (RDU). If you are flying in on Thursday or Friday, let me know in advance and I will *try* to arrange for someone to meet you there.

PROGDAY '96 VOLUNTEERS: It's time to get serious about this volunteering thing! If any of you intend to arrive on Thursday or Friday (or even earlier), please contact me if you want to help in the last minute preparations (i.e. gopher). Here is a general list of volunteer groups--please let me know what you are most interested in doing and we'll start working things out:

    1. Food Prepartion/Handling (perfect for spouses) 2. Ticket Sales 3. Car Parking 4. Security 5. Stagehands 6. Trash Detail/Recycling 7. Personal Gopher

How this works is you'll get to choose hour slots to volunteer for--no minimum hours required and I certainly won't set a maximum :)

To look at all this information in a much nicer format, check out the outstanding webpage at: http://www.vnet.net/users/ctucker/progday/

By the way, why don't you drop a line to ctucker@vnet.net and let him know what a wonderful job he's done on the WebPage!

PROGDAY '95 VIDEO: At this time I will have to stop work on the ProgDay video due to time and money contraints. I do apologize for this, and I hope to have something ready sometime this fall.

Although I didn't plan it this way, it appears that ProgDay will be *the* prog event of the year. I want to thank everyone who has helped make this crazy dream of mine a reality--I definitely couldn't have done all this on my own!

If you have any questions you can fax me at: 919-968-2557, or leave a message at: 919-929-8987. Until next time...
