I see that this turd has returned.

WARNING:Do not trade with this guy at all costs. He will rip you off. He
has owed me tapes since February _1995_. That is well over 1 1/2 years.
Sure he was in an accident and out of commision for a couple of months,
but this 1 1/2 years of dicking me around and I have received no contact
from him in well over 6 months is BS.

Feel free to flame him at will.

    Should I be pissed off?

I can't believe he has the gaul to return to the list...

you should be warned that i haven't really been following this thread
and i'm just doing this to put off work... but please, bear with me a
    bit.

Ivory Gate is actually a reference to a greek myth (or play?), i
believe it's called Antaea or something... i haven't actually read it
but i've been given the gist of it.

there's the hero guy (presumable antaea or antaeus) who i believe goes
to hell and he has to chose a path back.. one is the ivory gate of
dreams, the other is the gate of horn (also mentioned in the song?)

i know i sound vague and underread and stuff, but i guess i am. but
anyway, the ivory gate is far from being something slapped together
with some meaningless lyrics.. i agree with max about ACOS beating you
over the head with the Carpe Diem crap. i saw the movie, and i don't
mind them using it the song but, IMO, the lyrics just lost interest
for the most part when it became movie-based.

however, IMO also, ACOS never flowed all that well, anyway. the older
version flowed much better than the newer one, but there are too many
sudden, jarring sound changes... it could've been done much smoother,
as could the ivory gate, but the composition style is very
different... dream theater obviously wanted it too flow, but i think a
lot of the sudden dynamic changes take away from the song. it doesn't
sound like they were intended, they sound to me like derek just wanted
to use a different sound so he switched, or john switched settings on
    his amp or something.

anyway, i still think all three are awesome. i would rate them the
same way max would, though i rather like the heaviness of the new
    ACOS.

i think the best long songs are Univers Zero's La Faulx and
Mastermind's Triumph of the Will, a couple from Metallica's AJFA, and
Sylvian|Fripp's Darshan, although that's very different.

well, i'll do what i can.

i just received some info on CONTROL DENIED a week ago, actually.
this is, to my understanding, a side-project that chuck has been wanting
to do for several years now. he's always wanted to do a more traditional
metal album and be able to focus on the guitar aspect. he feels
that "symbolic", the last DEATH album, was a good album to leave the
public with in preparation for CONTROL DENIED, as it explores more musical
avenues then any of his other albums. CONTROL DENIED is currently in the
recording/demo stages and is in a more traditional metal vein. it still
has the blazing double bass and heavy riffs, but the vocalist is
a more traditional metal vocalist. this also gives chuck a chance to focus
on and expand upon his guitar playing, which is exciting.

as for DEATH, there is no official word regarding a split. as i understand
it from what i have read and what i have been told, chuck is just
taking a little break from it in order to make sure that CONTROL DENIED
comes to fruition, since he's been wanting to do it for so long.
as far as i know, DEATH has NOT broken up.

DEATH does, of course, have frequent line-up changes, since the center
and core of the band is as always will be chuck. while there
have been rumors about various members leaving the band, it is true that
the toured with a different bassist than the one who performed on
"symbolic" (this is not atypical of DEATH), and i suspect that thsi
might have cause the break-up rumors amonst people who don't
really know what in the fuck they're talking about.

besides, as long as chuck is around, DEATH can never "break up", because
chuck *is* DEATH. the only way it would end is if chuck decided to
end it, but people leaving the line-up doesn't mean shit.

and yeah, you're right, DEATH is verry progressive. actually, chuck is a
big d.t. fan. actaully, in the last interview i read of him, he
mentioned d.t.. there you go, i have content!

i also have a link on my homepage to a DEATH site. it's pretty minimal
in terms of info (i don't know of any really good DEATH sites). go
to my "bands" page (via my "links" page).

    matt.

Yes, the gate of horn is mentioned in the song. I read somewhere (not sure
where...either the Koran or sandman comics) that visions (true dreams)
pass through the gate of horn, and dreams (false or deceitful dreams) pass
    through the gate of dreams.

I think the gist of the song is, life sucks, so people take refuge in
dreams that give them hope. It's false hope, though, so people are
ultimately frustrated and betrayed, and life ends up sucking more. A
typically bleak Fates song in that respect, although I'm sure there are
other levels on which it could be read.

I think I managed to do my first DT conversion today. My bud from work and
I went out to lunch today and since we were in no hurry to go back, we
decided to go into Newbury Comics. He browses for a while and finds something,
but tells me he has trouble buying only 1 CD- since he's a big Rush fan, I
convince him DT is a good choice. I figured I&W would be best for him, but
of course that's the one CD they didn't have. I ended up recommending Awake
since he's heard SDV and a couple of other songs when I play them at work.
So far he loves it. I could've done 2 good deeds today (CD separator thingie
was spelled "Theatre") but I didn't have a pen :)

    Hey there fellow Ytsejammers!!!

Man, have I fallen behind on the jams! It seems as if everyone has abandoned
their college internet accounts and gone home! Surprisingly, I'm not getting
50 bajillion jams in my mailbox each day.

Anyways, since my computer has been broken down for about 1 1/2 months, there
are some issues that I would like to address that I have been unable to
address due to my absence from the jam.

#1 - Scenes From a Memory. IMO, it has it's ups and downs. It's interesting
to hear a few songs from back in the day when Charlie was singing. But
frankly, I could sing better at the helm than he could. He's awful! The
band was great, and I really thought how they opened their radio show
(Distant Echoes) was excellent! Eve (live in Sweden) was outstanding, and
the Awake demos were definitely interesting. 6:00 was pretty much the same.
There are some different lyrics in LSOAD that are pretty neat. And, CIAW is
so cool to listen to! I never realized how important arrangement is. This
version is something to get a hold of. ACOS was okay with Cintron at lead
vox. I'm just not to thrilled hearing others sing in place of James. I can
tolerate Dominici on WDADU, but Labrie just fits the mold better. Lastly,
Autumn Moon, performed (and written?) by Moore, is phenomenal. Even though
it's only 1 minute, it's so beautiful. Maybe one day he'll pick up where he
left off. Anyways, those are my opinions on SFAM if any of you out there in
    Ytse-land care.

#2 - New album. I've been gone for a while, so if you have any info you'd
like to enlighten me with, please e-mail me privately so we don't waste
bandwidth. I'm aware of the possible tracks of the album. Is there any
    other pertinent info?

#3 - I need to thank none other than Ben Laussade. Man, the Dave Matthews
Band rocks! I picked up Crash and UTTAD, and they are both excellent! Too
bad I missed their show in Chicago a couple of weeks ago, and too bad I'm
going to miss them when they come back in September. College sucks already
and I haven't even gone! I just hope that they'll come out to the Boston
area when I'm at school. Which leads me to one more item...

#4 - Ytse-Con III. Will anyone be attending the Ytse-Con and leave or pass
through the Boston area? I'm going to school at M.I.T. in the fall w/o a
car, so I'm looking for transportation to the Con. If not, I'll just take
some public transportation. No big hairy deal.

Anyways, it's nice to be back on the jam and I'll talk to y'all later!

yeah! i thought i was the only other person who liked that better. i
also like how after carpe diem he screams PLEASE DONT GO! the
commercially released ACoS's lyrics seemed more happy-go-lucky than the
original, i'm more compelled to the old ones.

Hahaha! I'm not laughing at you Scott. Ben, I used to work
with a couple of behaviorally aggressive kids who had dyslexic and
aphasic tendencies that sometimes and I can recall several interesting
conversations with them. On one occasion, one of them wanted to go
downtown with me, but his behavior on the previous shift precluded
    that from happening.
When I explained this to him, he took his protest straight to
the director. What started out as "This asshole won't drive me down
there in his car!" became "This car won't drive me down there in his
    asshole!"
Surprise DT Content!! - The kid liked PMU and I taped I&W for
    him.
I guess fans come in all shapes and sizes. 8-| ) >>

Since you have already told me about her, here's a relevant
    quote.

Always trust your first impression! When in doubt, eviscerate!

Whew!! I'm glad I wasn't sitting next to this guy at the show!
I think I would have considered that horrific as opposed to silly.

    >=46or Manowar, please refer to above. Concerning Rush, I'm a complete
    >ignorant. So I didn't include 2112 because I simply don't know it. BTW, I'd

If you are looking for conceptual material, 2112 is probably a
good record to pick up. It doesn't have the time changes of the DT or
FW stuff, but it has very natural transitions and a good storyline. It
deals with a man growing up in a tightly controlled state where a high
council, The Priests of The Temples of Syrinx, control all of the
stimuli which the public are allowed to access. Rock music is not
allowed nor are most of life's other creature comforts.
The protagonist finds a guitar one day and pleads with the
priests to let him make music and share its beauty with the public.
The priests launch into a tirade against him and destroy the
    instrument.
He then dreams of what life might be like in a world that was
not controlled under the iron fisted rule of the cold priests.
Finally, unable to deal with the despair caused by the
contrast of the wondrous dream with the stark reality of life as it
    truly is, he commits suicide.
The story ends with the former rulers of the planet, the Elder
Race, return to take over their world.

This is, of course, the Reader's Digest version. The song is
based on Ayn Rand's book Anthem.
Geddy sings high and loud on this record, and it is a bit of
an adjustment if you haven't heard any of their old material.
Personally, I prefer his higher pitched vocals although I remain a fan
after 23 years of listening to all of their stylistic changes.
Other great records are A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres,
    Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures.
A Farewell to Kings is best known for Closer To The Heart, but
the title track and Xanadu are among the best songs Rush has ever
penned. The last track, Cygnus X-1, is a sci-fi piece about a space
traveler who, during a voyage, is caught by the pull of a black hole
and pulled in. This is one of my favorite Rush tracks and sets the
    stage for Hemispheres.
In Hemispheres, our hero finds himself back in the time of the
ancient Greek Gods Apollo and Dionysus. The two Gods are arguing about
whether wisdom or emotion will prove more fruitful as the building
blocks for a society. During their manipulations, society falls into
decay and terrible wars are fought.
Finally, they listen to our hero's perspective on what they
have done to the world and appoint him Cygnus, Bringer of Balance. He
will act as a moderator of the two extremes.
Permanent Waves had 2 radio singles, The Spirit Of Radio and
Different Strings. My favorite tracks on the record are Freewill and
Natural Science. A great record and really the last album that Geddy
sang in the upper registers on
Moving Pictures is fantastic from start to finish. Tom Sawyer,
Red Barchetta, Limelight and the instrumental YYZ are the best known
tracks, but songs like The Camera Eye, Witch Hunt and Vital Signs are
too good to take a second string position. The songs have lush, but
not pompous production by Terry Brown, as do all of the albums up to
Signals, and Neil's drums have never sounded better. This is a record
that anyone who wants to start a Rush collection MUST buy.
These records cover the recording period from 1976-1980 and
are all excellent. I would suggest that you start with 2112, A
Farewell To Kings and Hemispheres if you want the more conceptual
stuff. If you are looking for shorter songs, take Permanent Waves and
    Moving Pictures first.
This is my favorite period of Rush music and is the most
guitar dominant. Material from 1982 onward is more socially conscious
and introspective lyrically, but also has the keys pushed to the front
of the mix. I like all of it personally, but many Rush fans find that
    it lacks bite.
The two albums I like the least are Presto and Roll The Bones.
While there are some good songs here, the albums were produced by
Rupert Hine who has worked with such mid 80s pop bands as The Fixx.
His production took virtually all of the bite out of the songs in the
studio. They sound far better live and even Geddy has admitted that
the records don't rock as hard as the band had hoped they might.
I apologize for the rambling, but I am a big fan and they have
recorded a great deal of material to wade through on a trial and error
basis, particularly when you are paying for the stuff yourself. I hope
some of my fellow Rush fans in the know weren't too bored by this. :)
I would have replied via e-mail, but I had some other things
to comment on and figured I'd kill multiple birds with one warhead,
    er, stone. :)

    Cheers,

    Rick
