    Hey,

I know you all like Progressive Rock/Metal. I know some of you are
metalheads, jazzfreaks, classicaliens, and other such types, but how many of
you have heard of the great Bad Religion?

I love Bad Religion! As well as DT, Al Dimeola, Ben Harper, Tori and
Orff. Plus plus many others. But If you like in depth political lyrics sung
with catchy melodys over punk rock, Bad Religion is it.

            If you disagree, whatever.

Absolutely NOT. I've seen/heard of several incidents where they are
proven to be playing off of tapes. For example: One time, the
    singer/bassist's mike stand tipped over and the vocals kept going;
another time, he was tuning up while the rest of the band started another
song; and why would the drummer wear a headset if he doesn't sing or
    sample anything??????

Their first album 'Foul Taste Of Freedom' was damn good. The second 'The
Truth Hurts' had decent songs with really a shitty production. Needless
to say, I'm not holding my breath for anything else from them.

    Hiya everyone,

This is a reply to the guy who asked about John Myung playing
"fingerstyle bass". This term is used correctly. John uses three fingers
on his right hand to pluck the strings in a ring-middle-index pattern musc
like throwing a baseball. Playing fingerstyle in this matter allows one to
play faster than with two fingers or with a pick (Les Claypool is a prime
example of three finger bass playing) without loosing the bassiness that
playing with the fingers gives the bass. For an example of the difference
between picking and fingerstyling bass check out David Ellefson's bass
lines on Rust in Peace as compared to John Myungs bass lines onj Images and
words; both lines are incredibly fast and complex but Myung sounds deeper
and fuller while Ellefson has a quicker "kick" and cuts through the mix a
little better due to the severity and timbre of his picking attack. Both
are amazing bassists and are two of my favorites (I am a six-string
bassist) and both have strongly influenced my playing.
As to Megadeth touring with DT I would love it! Megadeth has a
habit of touring with great up and coming bands (ie Stone Temple Pilots,
Korn, Fear Factory, Corrosion of Conformity etc). Both bands are made of
exeptionally talented players who can "shred" rings around most other
professional players out there. In the past Mustaine has been difficult to
get along with but he seems to be stabalizing in the last couple of years.
I saw them in concert while they were supporting Countdown to Extinction
and they were fantastic, they were considerate of the fans and put on a
great show. There was no flash-pots or naked babes that other bands use to
keep a stage presence. The emphasis was on the music and the energy really
came accross; the pit was intense. As to Musitaine calling Queensryche
"music for pussies" I believe Mustaine actually called them "yuppie fag
metal". I never said Mustaine hadn't been insensitive on many occasions
and his scathing wit has gotten him in hot water on several occasions, but
there are MANY band members who trash other bands (for some reason Axl Rose
comes to mind-I hate GNR). The truth of the matter is that Megadeth has
helped to create and lend musical credibility to a fledling style of music
(Killing is my Buisiness... is INFINATLEY more intricate and complex than
Metallica's Kill 'Em All or anything by Slayer, Exodus or Overkill.
Mustaine's lyrics are more challenging and meaningful than Metallica, Fates
warning or I Mother Earth. They are one of the few Progressive Metal bands
(yes they are Progressive-check out anything from Rust in Peace), to have
broken in platinum popularity status while still making complex music.
(Yes, I know Youthanasis is not as complex as Rust..., but the music is
still more complex than many Fates Warning or even Savatage songs.) They
have been creating music for more than 13 years and created some incredible
songs and influenced ALOT of bands including our own Dream Theater. If you
don't like Megadeth that's fine with me but dislike them for their musical
    tastes, not Mustaine's mouthing.

    Cheers!

Well guy, you have discovered something that a few of us have known about
for a while...the R&R hall of fame in Cleveland is a CROCK OF SHIT! It
    REALLY makes me mad too!

Here is a perfect example of the money pinching corporatized music industry
paying people who know nothing about music to make decisions about musical
    appreciation...CHECK THIS OUT:

In the R&R Hall of Fames list of most influential songs/artists, you will
    find that:

Queen LATIFAH made it, but QUEEN did not

RUN DMC's version of "Walk this way" made it, but AEROSMITHS did NOT

And the examples go on and on...Madonna made it, the Who's "Wont get fooled
    again" did not....its pathetic...

It's the DISCO Hall of Fame folks!! And it's sad to see the way things are
in the music industry these days...but it's a fact. Talent means nothing
anymore. Have you noticed on the radio that they only play the somewhat
"good" songs by really bad bands, and they only play the bad songs by really
    good bands?:) hehe

Hey folks. Just a couple of thoughts on these recent threads:

First, the Hall of Fame thread. It was an excellent point that was made
about prog not being recognized in the Hall. But the thing is, prog
rock, by and large, is uncomfortable to listen to. I don't mean this in
a bad way - I rather like that aspect of it. But if something's not easy
to listen to, it doesn't become popular. No popularity, no Hall of
Fame. (No, I can't explain why a band as popular as Yes ain't there.
Maybe it has something to do with U.S. popularity.) Remember, the Hall
is by and large about money, as are most other aspects of the biz. To
attract customers, they must appeal to what the general American or
tourist listens to, which, unfortunately, ain't prog. Oh, well. Maybe
someday there will be a Prog Hall of Fame. I'd go.

About bass playing - lots of people play in different ways. I very
rarely use my thumb on the strings. Most of the time, I anchor my thumb
against the pickup to give myself a little more leverage on the strings.
If I'm playing something particularly fast, I use my ring finger. The
index-middle-ring technique works particularly well for me when playing
fast triplets, for example the verses in "Run to the Hills." Well, those
aren't exactly triplets, more three notes and one rest, but you get the
idea. Anyway, watching JM I got the impression that he uses his fingers
to make what he's doing easiest, meaning with the least movement and
such. Long left-hand pinky stretches mean less left-hand movement.
Using three or four fingers on the right hand means that four eighth
notes fall into a set of four, rather than two sets of two.

    My two nearly-insignificant American coins,
    Chris

I wouldn't be too concerned about the hall. The hall is the biggest
pile of shit on this earth. When they inducted Frank Zappa, they had
Lou Reed do it. Lou Reed spent a lot of time direspecting FZ for
reasons that really don't matter, and Zappa's widow, Gail, was very
upset over this. Plus when Gail tried to get tickets for her and their
four children, the Comittee would only give them one ticket and told
them that if they wanted more it would be $1,500 a ticket. Frank Zappa
was a genius and influenced a ton of bands (including Mike Portnoy),
and to treat his memory like this was disgusting.
It doesn't really surprise me that Yes or DT aren't mentioned.
These are bands that make music that's far to complex for people in the
Hall to comprehend. That's just my opinion except for the Zappa part,
which I got from an article.

I have just bought the latest album by LETHAL called "Your Lonely God".
Although it only contains five songs, it KICKS ASS and is worth buying.
Their first album "Programmed", sounds almost exactly like QUEENSRYCHE's
OPERATION:MINDCRIME, but heavier. The vocalist was a Geoff Tate clone.
Their latest album is even more heavier (with Pantera-like guitar riffs),
and the vocalist has his own style now, while maintaining that Progressive
    Metal high pitch.
Lyrics are Great, Musicians are Great, Singer is Amazing.
Here are the words to "THE PAGE BEFORE":

I suffer in silence, now that my own words betray me
The voice of a holy child with a demon's tongue
I'm filing my thoughts away, Hiding myself away
For I have seen myself laughing through your trusting eyes.

View from the ledge, fate or razor's edge
You know I have taken from you what you've taken from me, this way.

I've never felt the pain, I've never seen the rain
I never crossed that line, but I know there's still time
Although you've seen the sign, your visions were all mine
Your heart was in my hand, trading hours for sand.
There's always a first time, there's always a last time
There's always an encore of the page before.

Controlling a trembling hand, defining your dreams and nightmares
Watching your life played out on an empty page
I know that you have to see, I am your one true savior
I feel all of your thoughts, all of your fear this way...

-- LETHAL have a great future.

This has nothing to do with DT or their music. I just saw the
question "Is anyone going to the IM concert?" in the 'jam, and
I got worried. Skadz and I saw Maiden in their first concert
in the US to promote the X-Factor album, and besides the old
material, the concert really sucked. We can now say that we
saw IM play in a CLUB! Save your bills, if you haven't spent
    them already...

i have solved the greatest riddle of all time. i know the answer to the
question, "what does dt sound like?"

asked yesterday, i looked at the person and replied, "it's like yes on
    steroids."

it fits oh so logically. i was satisfied with the answer.

anyways, i know this has been mentioned a few times here. the prog stuff
that's played during knicks-rangers games (or shall i say, bricks and
shitheads' games, though i am a huge fan of both). last night, while the
shitheads got drubbed by the penguins, somewhere in there, i heard "benny the
bouncer" by elp. i couldn't believe what i was hearing. about the only cool
thing about that game, other than watching marty mcsorley ream people every
    now and then.

    see ya on the boards!
    love always

I agree that there's got to be some sort of skill involved. I've
always preferred Chess-type games to UNO-type games, which is why so many
people play Magic:The Gathering-type games... it's a blend of the two.
I've considered having two or three slots go to the first three people
who can beat me at Magic. However not everyone is into MTG so that's not
entirely fair. I also considered letting people play me at chess. I'm no
Bobby Fischer, but I can hold my own. But then again, think how many
people never got into chess. I don't plan on this being the sort of thing
that can turn political... if I have net judges help out, they will be
the most reclusive, unopinionated, non-particpants I can find. It might
be more fair for me to hold an event judged by locals here that are NOT
on the net. That way even my OWN prejudices (if any) won't interfere.

Well... I'd do this, but I used all the ones I know up in CD
    liners on past releases. :)

Seems too luck-oriented... I think I'll be doing something else. :)
