I was talking to my girlfriend yesterday and she said someone got her a DT
tape for her birthday. She loved it! (I knew she had good taste-she's going
out with me, after all :) She said she especially like "Waiting For Sleep",
but I corrected her. That rules! I didn't even have to convert her!

Here's something that popped up on Reuters during an AOL search - seems the
rumors held the usual mix of bits of truth with some things not quite so
correct (at least if work on the new album is already in progress, as this
    would have it).

    Linda Darling

    NEW YORK--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--March 28, 1996--Atlantic recording group
Genesis, one of the most successful rock bands in the world, are currently
    seeking a vocalist.

This is the first move to recruit a new member since Peter Gabriel left the
group in 1975. For the past 20 years, drummer Phil Collins has been temping
as singer, to great acclaim. Now, however, he has decided to move on in
order to concentrate on his solo projects.

Mike Rutherford -- whose other band, Mike & The Mechanics, are on a sold-out
UK tour, with an album at No. 3 in the charts -- confirmed that this was a
completely amicable parting. "I quite understand Phil's reasons for leaving
-- being in two highly successful outfits is very hard work. When a change
like this comes about, it brings something different, and that's what we've
found with the new direction our music is now taking. The new Genesis
album that Tony and I are working on will be much heavier and darker."

Tony Banks, keyboard player with Genesis since he and Peter Gabriel formed a
songwriting partnership at school in 1966, described Phil's departure as "an
opportunity rather than a problem. Of course we'll miss him. We have had
some fantastic times together. But this gives us a chance to take Genesis
    to the next stage."

Phil Collins commented: "Having been in Genesis for 25 years, I felt it
time to change direction in my musical life. For me now, it will be music
for movies, some jazz projects, and of course my solo career. I wish the
guys in Genesis all the very best in their future. We remain the best of
    friends."

The band, who have sold over 80 million albums so far, have begun work on a
new album, their twentieth, and will be auditioning vocalists in the near
future. They are still considering their options as regards replacing
    Collins with a regular drummer.

I hate them too, and I know Mike Portnoy wasn't to thrilled with the I&W
trigger either...but one question. If he had the trigger on I&W, how did he
manage the ghost notes on LtL? And, if he could do that, why didn't he do it
when he wanted to use ghost notes other places on the album?

I'm a guitarist but I like the ACOS snare. I'm the antithesis. Ha. Anyways, the snare on ACOS is a piccolo(sp?) snare, which is considered by most drummers as better sounding than a standard or soprano snare. Piccolo snares are also usually more expensive than standard snares, from what I've seen in catalogs as I was trying to find the guitar section... :) I think most drummers prefer the snare on ACOS just as most guitarists would prefer the guitar tone on a song that JP uses his Ibanez more than on a song where he used some crappy peavey or something... I REPEAT: I'm NOT a drummer so please be considerate in your 'responses.' :)

I just got back to the 'JAM after a bit of a break to find something really important to me. That's pretty kewl. But anyway-

I really think Mike's sound would be greatly improved by using an even larger snare than the normal 5.5" to 6.5" size. So much of his playing already sounds big, and I feel a deep resonating sanre would be the ideal centerpiece to his kit. Maybe it's just me, but I just crave that John Bonham-esque sound that makes your teeth ratlle. Just my $0.02.

The Dave Matthews Band is definately talented!! I really enjoyed seeing Dave and Tim Reynolds together this past February in Davenport, IA on their little acoustic tour. I'm SUPER excited for the new CD as well as another tour with the entire band.

The new tunes (I've heard about 6 or 7 during the acoustic show) sound great, and with full band on the upcoming CD should be sweet. I haven't heard of the song mentioned on the last Ytsejam, but I do know about a few others. If anyone's interested, the new one by DMB should be out in April sometime. Hey Jammers:

This is pretty wierd, but the other night I had the strangest dream. My best friend and I were at a Dream Theater concert and we were in the front row. When Dream Theater came out every one went crazy and then they broke out like a tuba, trombone and trumpet and proceeded to play a big band version of one of their songs! It was really wierd. THen after the song was over, I told Mike Portnoy how cool it was and he shook my hand. Totally bizarre. Well, later.

Well, since the Portnoy snare thread has been revived, I figured I'd hop in.

Someone said that guitar players seems to like the triggered sound-- well, as a guitarist AND a keyboard/drum programmer, I think triggers can occasionally sound cool, but the I&W snare is terrible. Even when I program drumloops and fills, I always make a point to vary the velocity of the snare hit depending on how it's used. If it's the "grace note" of a flam (to make it sound like hitting the snare with both sticks), or if it's a series of fast x-tuplets, or if it's the off-beat ghost notes in a funk pattern, then they get low velocities-- because if you hit a drum harder or softer, the timbre will obviously sound different. You'd be amazed at how lifelike programmed drums can sound if you pay attention to detail like that, as opposed to just looping a beat, strictly quantized, velocities identical. One velocity for all hits make the snare sound very unnatural and awkward; the same goes for toms and kick drums and cymbals. Every drummer will tell you that. Triggers take away drum DYNAMICS-- and Dream Theater of all bands should know the musical value in dynamics.

Then again, I probably would not have minded so much had Portnoy's trigger of choice been something higher in pitch. The deep snare he uses on I&W is really just shit. But I can't get enough of the soprano snare sound... I think that trend in modern drumming is a great move. I also think Portnoy's Awake sound is one of the best snare sounds I've ever heard. I don't like ACOS's snare, though, the coffee can thing. It's high, but it's just not crisp-- it's matte, not bright, like Awake. No reverb, no color. I blame Prater, as usual.

[Some other REALLY cool snare sounds: Chad Sexton of 311, David of Korn, John Stanier of Helmet, Carter Beauford of DMB, Aaron Comess of Spin Doctors, John Tempesta of White Zombie (and Testament's "Low"), Neil Peart (his recent sound), Dave Abbruzzese late of Pearl Jam.]

One more thing I have to add about Portnoy's drums-- the sound of his cymbals. On Awake (and also I&W a little), I think what makes them sound so damn cool is that you really only hear the HINT of a cymbal. You hear the heavy kick drum hit, but you don't hear that heavy, harsh Lars-like crash cymbal, you hear this really light splash hidden away in the mix. This is more a production thing than Portnoy's doing-- Duane and John are the shit. It's probably a good thing-- with all the cymbal work Portnoy does all over the place, if those cymbals were mixed loud, we'd all be deaf from the tintinnabulation alone.

This is another thing that I agonize over in programming drums: even in the heaviest, fastest drum pattern, the cymbals are always at like Velocity 60 even if the kick is at 127. And I always, ALWAYS, "humanize" the drums (Performer 5.02, throws the timing off by a certain number of ticks; removes the ugly robotic sound of quantization). But of course, it's never the same as a real drummer, fuckups and poor hygiene habits notwithstanding <grin>.

I remember a long while ago, Ben said that he loved Portnoy's drums because the toms had all this attack and tonality, and no ringing. I agree, the Awake toms are really cool-- and the way they're mixed on Awake, it sounds like they're surrounding Portnoy at a 20 foot radius. They sound great on Surround Sound-- too bad the SS I heard them on had no bass.

    Just my 20,000 pesos.
