    Hello everyone,

In Ytsejam digest 1374 on Wednesday, Mar. 27,1996, our transcriptionist pal
    Dave Kobayashi <WildKoba@aol.com> wrote:

    >i have a proposal for you, and i hope i hear results, and good ones

    >miserable in any way, but i always prefer originals to the imitation- that's
    >why i prefer ky jelly over the leading brand). so how about it?

Wow, a public proposal! That was quick! :)

You're not the only person who has written to me privately about this
recently (why you are all asking *me* about this and not Kevin himself, I
have no idea. I guess it's because I did the dubbing project. :), and I've
been talking to Kevin about this myself too. He's now seriously considering
making the older "Santa Fe demos" (the dubbing project demos) available the
same way he has the Chroma Key demos.

Now, hold yer horses... don't go bugging him about it just yet (be good!
<G>). :) Although he is thinking about doing this, he has no concrete plans
on exactly *how* to do it yet (packaging, etc.), so give him some time to
come up with some ideas before sending him your orders. ;) But, he is very
aware now that people want to see this happen and he does intend to do
something about it, if at all feasible.

So, hows about this... if anyone on this list is interested in purchasing a
copy of Kevin's older demos (the dubbing project demos) directly from him,
write me a private e-mail just stating that, "yes, I would be interested in
purchasing said items from the Kevster," and feel free to add any additional
comments about it you'd like to throw in (ideas on distribution, pricing, or
packaging for example), and I'll gather all the e-mail requests & ideas
together and give him the Big Picture in about two weeks. First and
foremost, he really needs to know how many people would be interested in
buying these older demos before he decides to make them available. 'Kay? :)

And please DON'T POST PUBLIC MAIL TO THE LIST ABOUT THIS OR RISK BEING FLAMED
FOR SAYING, "yeah, me too!!!" Only AOLers like WildKoba would do that...

..oh yeah, I'm an AOLer myself. Whoops. ;)

Kevin just mailed off the first 30 or so Chroma Key tapes, so be looking in
    your mailboxes soon!

    Take care everyone,

    Jennifer

I live in PA. I am willing to travel to Maryland, Jersey,

    Message-ID: <199603281815.LAA09860@bud.indirect.com>

Two quick clarifications on my last post about CDs...

Rush "Critical Mass", even if two separate CDs, will be created,
mailed, sent, etc. together in a single package. I won't be separating
the two parts of the show, that would be a logistics nightmare.

Dream Theater "Precious Things" won't be out until late July at
the very earliest. I will be putting together the listing of who already
has reservations for it before classes let out for the summer.. likely
early May. Thus, the contest will be run before then for the final
spots. "Dream Theater Ultimate Trivial Pursuit" seems like the best
choice of all for how to earn the CD. I might have to do a run of 150
just to include all the people who have ordered every disc.

In between Critical Mass and Precious Things will probably be my
Van Halen release, which I figure only some of you will want.. I'll
likely be promoting that over on the VH list. Anyone got the address to
subscribe? I'll make it available here as well, of course, but I know
this is the DT forum first and foremost.

I hope Type O Negative gets a release done this year; I'd love to
release the Type O CD along with the jump in publicity it'll cause.

General info: many have asked me if I'll ever do CDs of Fates
Warning, King's X, Galactic Cowboys. The answer is, I sure hope so. But
at this point I know I couldn't crank 500 of them and still sell. If I
have the ability to produce more small-print-run material like Precious
Things, I'll see what I can arrange. I really dig those three bands, but
I know the truth about their selling power. :(

You'll never guess what happened to me today.

I was in Calculus class and I was surfing the Web. (We each have a
computer in front of us, and I didn't feel like listening to the
lecture.) So naturally, when I first opened Netscape, I checked out my
homepage. I have a sound clip of ACOS on there, and I thought I'd
download it to my computer in the lab so I could listen to it later.
Well, later came sooner than I thought. I clicked on the file, and
Netscape was set up to play the .wav file, not download it to a file. So
through the speakers, my entire class heard ACOS. I tried to stop it
(didn't want to), but the computer locked up. So my lab class of about
30 got a 50 second sample of _A Change of Seasons_. I was hoping someone
would say, "hey, that's Dream Theater", but everyone just kind of
laughed. Sorry I rambled on, but I thought it was kind of funny.

    Fellow Ytsedrummers,

I personally think drum triggers suck when used while recording an
album. It's understandable that sometimes when playing a gig, a decent
acoustic drum sound is hard to achieve. That's about the only excuse for
then using triggers. I think triggers make the raw, acoustic qualities
of the drums too synthetic. If a person is going to use triggers for
recording an album, they might as well just program the drum parts. I also
think the use of triggers in the studio stems from a laziness regarding
tuning, miking, and using effects on the drums(if absolutely necessary).
However, when recording acoustic drums, a maximum effort should be made
to make the drums sound as good as possible. I hate the snare buzz from
the toms on ACOS! That's my only gripe with DT.

I'm a drummer and I don't like the snare sound on ACOS. I think Mike is
falling into a trend in getting one of those annoying piccalo snare drums.
I think there is a bit of novelty (as a drummer) experienced when you play
one of these because they sound so different from a normal 5 1/2" to 6 1/2"
snare. They really cut through the mix. I wouldn't buy one though, it
would just get annoying after a while.

P.S. It could be worse: have you heard the snare sound on Our Lady Peace's
_Naveed_? Ugh! A truly awful CHEAP steel snare drum.

disagree. THey fall in the category of very talented musicians. Their
studio albums take so much away from their live show. Dave's voice takes
a lot to get used to. The music though rocks. I only got into DMB since
    my girlfriend loves them.

    1. Hades. A week or so ago I posted about how
I had sent a check to Black Pumkin Records for
the new Hades disc about three or four months
ago and they had cashed it, but no cd. Anyway,
yesterday, what did I find in my mailbox? THE
NEW HADES!!! Now, that may not excite many
of you, but I know there are at least a few list
members (some choose to call them "jammers"
but I think that sounds lame) that are fans of
Hades. The disc sounds really good, and I
recommend it to anyone who liked Hades or
Non-Fiction or, I guess, anyone who liked the
singer from Watchtower, because Alan Tecchio
also sings for Hades. Much better than his
    performance on "Control and Resistance."
If anyone wants the address for a copy (15
dollars, who knows when you will get it...)
    e-mail me.

    2. Nothing even remotely DT related. Sorry.

Does anyone else agree that maybe, just maybe, Alan Adler shouldn't be on the Jam if he only wants to discuss DT? Sorry, dude - we don't operate that way! We find an issue, band, or person and rip it to shreds. I should know - I've been on both sides.

    Anyone wanna argue religion again?

    Hey everybody in Ytse-land,

I want to say that to anyone who thinks that this should be a DT-only 'Jam in terms of content should really be open to people's opinions on other bands. Granted, DT is by far the greatest band of all time, but I listen to a WIDE variety of music. Whether it be Bach, DT, Biohazard or anything else, it deserves an open mind and that's what I think is a part of the whole "progressive" scene, not how many time changes are in the music or how eloquently the lyrics are written.

To the guy who talked about his CDs: I think a lot of those are cool, too. The one thing I must absolutely recommend is "Gutter Ballet" from Savatage, it is amazing from a prog point of view or any other.
