    > Well, I've relistened to WDADU and think TOWHTSTS with Mr. LaBrie at
    >vocals would KICK ASS! Looks like I'll have to purchase WDATU, hmmmm? Maybe

Just put it this way...TOWHTSTS is one of the songs w/ the worst quality in
WDATU, and LaBrie forgets and sorta mumbles thru the second pre-chorus...and
I still prefer listening to it than the one in WDADU...That song was made
    for James...

As far as drums sounds go, I like Awake the best because it sounds very
'natural', but I think the I&W sound kicks ass in certain parts...
especially that part in the intro to LtL where the key changes and he starts
beating the crap out of the snare and then they go into a keyboard solo...I
think that fake snappiness really fits in well there...as far as ACoS goes,
It doesnt't bother me, but th piccolo snare sound doesn't give enough
OOOOMPH! to the heavy parts... especially the beginning....

No flames, Mr. Edd, just my very own HO.

I've been thinking about this a lot, and I'll try to explain why I have
always disliked that snare sound. Yes, I am a guitarist (can you teach
me the diddly-piss method you spoke of?) but I don't think that has
    anything to do with this.

The snare on ACOS is TUNED to a certain pitch - sorry I don't know
exactly what it is - and this one certain note is then repeated over &
over & over, ad nauseum. For that reason it is very distracting and
takes away from the rest of the band's contribution. It's as if JP
decided to play a loud, clean Bflat on 2 and 4 of every measure (or 3
and 7, or whatever is emphasized in DT's odd measures) and he continued
to do this in every passage, with no regard to the actual key of the
passage. How do you think THAT would sound?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't drums primarily a PERCUSSIVE
instrument? The snare on ACOS is not percussive; it is melodic, in a
    very monotone (and monotonous) way.

I admire Mike Portnoy immensely, and would even say that his incredible
talent drew me into DT more than that of any of the other gods, BUT - I
hate that snare! And I consider its use highly self-indulgent of Mike.
Well, I guess that'll make me a few enemies here, but that's how I
    feel.

Larry, possibly the oldest 'jammer . . .

Hello boys and girls !!! Just some thoughts on recent posts.
     1) The whole ropas thing is this: Ropas is the Spanish word for
clothes. I lost mine willingly in Mexico in the presence of two
lovely women, one of whom will be my wife. They had no clothes on
either, after all we were skinny dipping at 1:30 A.M. in the
Carribean ( Don't try this though, it's Illegal in Mexico. I found
out the hard way, no pun intended ) Are you guys jealous or what?
Mojoman was very jealous. He had to spend the night with just one
pissed off girlfriend, while I was with two!
     2) If Mike Portnoy really wants a great Drum sound for the next
album he should enlist the aid of Mark Zonder from FW. IMHO he has
the best drum sound out there. My snare is a Tama 6.5"X14" birch
shelled drum that kicks ass at all volumes. Just ask Mojoman or the
    Digital boy.
     3) I don't think the version of TTT demo is faster. It's just
arranged differently Ex. Outro solo overlaps vocals.

Well that is my 42,318 cents worth. " Oh and the silly party has
taken Lutenn, Brian what do you make of that? "

Elen sila lumenn omentilmo, Gandalf ( Donde esta tu ropas?

A quick thing about triggers and ghost notes. When I went to a
Mike P. clinic he mentioned how much he hated the triggers. In fact, he
made a point of telling the crowd several times that they were "shoved
down his throat" by the producer (Prater). He also said something that
might be of relevance to the point that someone brought up regarding the
use of ghost notes in LTL. He said that the trigger was so insensitive
that when he would do a snare fill that used ghost notes, often times
there was a weird thing going on with the signal (I'm sure there's a
technical term for it) which resulted in the actual fill sounding
different than he intended it to. Some times the ghost notes would even
get a weird "reverse" effect making the drum part sound, to use his exact
words, "more complicated than it already was."

                                    Richie

P.S. I'm normally not a very insistent person, but if there is somebody
out there in ytseland that is sitting at his or her computer thinking
"Gee, wouldn't it be a neat idea to forward a chain letter/pyramid
scheme/misc bullshit to the jam? I bet they could all benefit from such a
kind-hearted act," may I make a suggestion? DON'T FUCKING DO IT!!! It is
a waste of everybody's time (and in some cases money). And we wonder why
we have 17 jams a day. If these things are accidental postings, fine.
You're forgiven. Just don't do it again. The only thing worse than junk
    mail is junk e-mail.

Look, everyone gets rich by sending out just five dollars to some

everybody just puts up five dollars into a huge pile, then we equally
re-distribute the money... how much does everyone have? 5 friggin'

yeah i remember reading that too... its funny watching paul on vid.
because he'll get really into the stuff, he'll always go "Ok now i'm
gonna do it once more, just faster" then he'll do it and go "ok just a

Speaking of videos, I watched VH's "Right Here: Right Now", for the first time
earlier this week, great video! It has some songs that aren't on the CD. It
also reminded me why VH is one of my
favorite bands to see in the summer. The
video Rip mentioned rocks also, I think "There's Only One Way To Rock" is
on it. In the past week I've also watched the Rush video boot that I mentioned
before, the DT Japan PPV, and Living Colour's "Time Tunnel". I have yet to
watch Sting's "Fields of Gold" video, and The Satch Tapes, the latter will be a
    good pre-concert viewing.

I won't use the "w" word to refer to the Crue, but needless to say I don't like
them. Anyway, I saw the aforementioned album at Best Buy's cut-out bin (along
with Awake), so those interested should check it out.

Okay, screw Letterman. DT should do an ER soundtrack. They could use one
song per episode. Something fast and furious for those two-mile hallways
that the medical team hauls ass down at breakneck speeds to get The
Patient to the East Tower Facility That Can Only Be Reached By This One
    Two-Mile Long Hallway.

DT could also hit the smooth, dulcid tones for the touching moments when
Dr. Louis sees Carter vomiting into the mouth of his girlfriend as his
impatience and anxiety builds to the point where he can't even talk
without knowing whether he "made the sugery-team jello-wrestling elite" or
    some other highly-regarded position.

    (a quiet moment of pondering)

I must admit that I'm extremely intrigued at the chemistry of ER. I'd
argue that it's the most tightly-woven plotline on television. The
innocent-at-heart, unaware-of-his-own-confusion Dr. Carter is fluctuating
between becoming Karl Vuselage, the epitome of why he entered medicine in
the first place - to become a rich, famous surgeon, and Dr. Bentan, his
mentor who has raised him as an empathetic, honest healer of the sick. The
whole thing reminds me of another story about the battle between good and
evil that I saw a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, about Luke
Skywalker and his search for the truth within himself. Darth Vader on one
side and Obi Wan Kenobi on the other - Vuselage and Bentan.

Otherwise, I had been waiting for the Bentan "Truth-Defending Samurai Of
Unyielding Honor" / Ross "Hard Muthafucka Who Ought Not Be Messed With"
faceoff since I started watching the show over last Christmas break. I
keep wondering what I missed during the first season, but luckily I've
caught enough reruns to get the gist of the characters' histories.

(Pondering done. By the way, do you watch ER? It's brilliant.)

    "AARGH!! My vocal, vockkkaaagh!!"

    "Whadda we got here, Carol?"

"Vocalist!! Screamed so loud his throat ruptured!! Vocal chords pretty
    banged up!!"

"That all? Gimme 40 cc's of Erotomania." (more medical jargon the
                                             audience can't possibly follow)

"That's not all, Doug!! All the spotlights shattered from the vibrations!!
    The whole band's sliced up!!"

"Hey, why are you two shouting like that?! I'm leaning over the same body,
less than a foot away from your faces!! You think I can't hear you?!"

"We're doctors. We have to shout. Except for me. I fear nothing. Besides,
this guy's only dying, so everyone just calm down."

"COMIN' THROUGH!! COMIN' THROUGH!! We got a deaf bassist! He was standing
right in front of the vocal monitor when golden throat over there decided
    to go supersonic!"

"Wait! Mark, he's not speaking!! And his innocence is fading fast!!"

"He's the bassist, Susan, he NEVER speaks."

"Hey guys, what can I do to help?"

"Dammit, Carter, don't you know by now that I rule the world and you're a
dying quark on the bacteria from a flea on a dog's ass swimming in a sea
of pigshit? Now get the hell out of here, you're in the way." (whoever
that angry black woman is who won't give Carter the time of day)

"Dr. Kobayashi, we need you in here!!"

"Whazat? Yeah, get the man some crack."

"CRACK?! Are you crazy?? He's all slashed up!! This man needs stitches!!"

"He's in pain? Better make it crack STAT..."

    Hey fellow 'jammers,
For those of you who haven't been on the IRC channel yet, you
don't know what you're missing out on! Besides the regular old chat,
we've got a new game going on (informally entitled Ytse-Quote). It's
fun, it's easy, it's free, and you can win prizes (sometime in the
    future). Here's how it works:

Each game will consist of a certain number of questions.
Each question will be a quote from a Dream Theater song.
No quotes will come from bootlegs or from unreleased material.
Each quote will have one dummy word replacing a real word from the song.
The object is to be the first to guess either the song title, the word
which is supposed to be in the song, or both.
You will receive one point for each song title, and one point for each
       word, guessed correctly.
The winner is (obviously) the person with the most points after the
       specified amount of questions.

    A few rules:

No liners, lyric sheets, or other related material may be used.
If no one guesses a song title or word within a prescribed amount of time,
a question may be declared null and void to prevent such cheating.
The song title must be typed out competely (NO abbreviations allowed).
The song title, as well as the word, must be spelled correctly.
All decisions of the judge (me) are final.

Like I said, when we see a good amount of competition going, we'll start
up a little tournament, so get some practice and join early! It is
easiest to find us in the late evening US time (after 11:00 pm EST).
If you come and a game is in progress, feel free to jump in! The rules
will be explained more thoroughly on the channel.

I'd like to congratulate our first Ytse-Quote winner, Pat Griffin
(Gabbo)! And he complained of a lag. Sheesh! :)

For those of you who've never been on the channel, start up your IRC
client, and change your server to irc.dreamt.org with a port # of 2112.
We're usually on channel #ytsejam, but that may change if demand is high
    enough.

                                                    Looking forward to
                                                       seeing you on IRC!

                                                    Chad Klunck

    Hi, long time no speak!

Just to add a little something to the debate on DTs success in Europe:

    * LATM was the 13th best selling hard rock album of 1993 in Sweden
    * Awake entered the Swedish album chart at 8th position
    * climbed to 4th and stayed there for two weeks. fuckin 4th on the chart!!!
    * ACOS entered at 13th and stayed there for a week
    * ACOS then dropped out of the top20

    * DT easily sold out a 1500+ venue last year in Stockholm (pop 1.300.000)

However NO media coverage except for the national broadcasting network
which has done some reports on them + the 50 min broadcast from their
second 93-gig here (it's on the bootleg Majestic Harmonies)

I'll contact Warner soon and will try to get some more info on the
    success and future plans.

What exactly happens at these events? Does JP lay his guitar down on a couch,
tell it to relax, get it to explain its problems, and then write out a
    prescription?

TV keeps me awake. Conversation keeps me awake. Silence keeps me awake. The
only thing I can fall asleep to is Music. So, I guess Music must be really
    boring :-)

    Very rare ones.

    Hello!

Then why don't you listen to Extreme? These little funky bits on TTT were
cool, but I don't want DT to water their unique band sound with an orchestra.
I love them for being a tight playing band of five excellent performers.
Listen to the cheesy strings on Nothing Else Matters. Enough said. No, just
one more note. Anyone into The Doors? Remember what happened when they had a
lot of guest musicians on The Soft Parade? It wasn't the Doors anymore. The
only good songs were Shaman's Blues and the title song, and these were the
ones without the brass and strings...

    >- A concept album. 'Nuff said.

When I think about what happened to excellent bands like Yes and Genesis when
they did their concept albums back in 1974, I just have to vote NO. No, I
don't like Topographic Oceans and Lamb... ;-) Anyway, DT always had some
loose concept in all of their albums, they never did just a "song collection".

    >- You've heard me say it before-- Three words: Progressive Gangsta Rap! I

If that happens, I also want some brutal death metal stuff on that album!
What about a coverversion of Slayer's Raining Blood, Mike likes it, as we
    all know ;-)

    >- An song where they all switch instruments, a la Mr. Bungle.

John Myung on violin, Derek on guitar, James on drums, Mike on piano and
John Petrucci on bass and singing. Imagine!

    >- Need some more Grand Piano. Not keyboard; full, heavy, stereo Grand

    YES! Love that BIG sound!

    >- More acoustic guitar. Not JP's chorus-effect electric acoustic sound,
    >but Silent Man acoustic. AD showed how awesome they could be acoustically,
    >even if JP said somewhere that he "sucked" at acoustic. Admittedly, that

I thought he DID suck on AD. When you know how incredible he is on electric
guitar, it's weird how hard it seems to be for him to play an acoustic.

Anyway, it was all about the new album. The material the band has written
yet seems to be far away from being radio friendly, when you define radio
friendly with "To Be With You" or whatever. If you define it with PMU,
then it might fit. All of you who heard Raise The Knife on one of Mike's
clinics know what I mean. 12 minutes, many parts, heavy riffs, no real solo
sections for guitar or keyboard, just a long Dream Theater song. It sounds
like LTL pt.2, in a way. If all of the other songs are of that quality, we
get another classic album, be sure.

Speaking of radio friendly songs, I happen to like Another Day (though James
overdoes it sometimes, you know, that "uuuhuuh" on the beginning... I can
understand why some people might find that cheesy.), The Silent Man is great,
but I can't stand Innocence Faded. This chorus with the mega-cheesy
"aaaah"-backing-vocals is so incredibly cheap, for me it's the worst DT song
ever. There are some of you who like this song, so it's of course just my
    opinion...

    That's it for now.

    Steffen
