Hi!

No, I think this more precise sound fits well to his drumming. If he'd have
a BIG snare sound (you know, this AOR-WHAM!), it would sound unbelievable
muddy. Still like Awake best, it's real, precise, and had this bit reverb
that made it sound bigger.
Scott wrote about the snare sounds:
..no, I won't quote that, you're just absolutely right! Good news for
Prater-haters: John and Mike confirmed, that they won't work with Prater
anymore. Basically it was the record company's idea to give Prater another
chance...

OK guys, read the forwarded private message. It could make you a very
happy person. This is not a typical get rich quick scheme. Using the
brain that some people question me having (g), I have determined that this
works if you play by the rules. No matter what, you will make some profit,
considering that the total outlay is only $6.60 (5 $1 bills and 5 $0.32
stamps).
Hello! I've got some awesome news that I think you need to take two
minutes to read if you have ever thought "How could I make some>serious cash
in a hurry???" , or been in serious debt, ready to do
almost anything to get the money needed to pay off those bill
collectors. So grab a snack, a warm cup of coffee, or a glass of your
favorite beverage, get comfortable and listen to this interesting,
exciting find!
Let me start by saying that I FINALLY FOUND IT! That's right! I found
it! And I HATE GET RICH QUICK SCHEMES!! I hate those schemes like
multi-level marketing, mail-order schemes, envelope stuffing scams,
900 number scams... the list goes on forever. I have tried every darn
get rich quick scheme out there over the past 12 years. I somehow got>on
mailing lists for people looking to make money (more like
'desperate stupid people who will try anything for money!'). Well,
when I was a teenager, these claims to 'get me rich quick' sounded
irresistible! I would shell out $14.95 here, $29.95 there, $24.95
here, and another $49.95 there. I had maxed out my new Circuit City
Card AND my Visa...I was desperate for money!! So, I gave them all a
chance but failed at every one of them! Maybe they worked for some
people, but not for me. Eventually, I just tossed that JUNK MAIL in
the trash when I got the mail. I recognized it right away. I can
smell a money scam from a mile away these days, SO I THOUGHT.... I
thought I could sniff out a scam easily. WAS I WRONG!! ....I LOVE
THE INTERNET!!!
I was scanning thru a NEWSGROUP and saw an article stating to GET
CASH FAST!! I thought..."Here on the Internet?? Well, I'll just have
to see what schemes could possibly be on the internet." The article
described a way to MAIL A ONE DOLLAR BILL TO ONLY FIVE PEOPLE AND MAKE
$50, 0000 IN CASH WITHIN 4 WEEKS! Well, the more I thought about it,
the more I became very curious. Why? Because of the way it worked AND
BECAUSE IT WOULD ONLY COST ME FIVE DOLLARS (AND FIVE STAMPS), THAT'S
ALL I EVER PAY....EVER!!
Ok, so the $50,000 in cash was maybe an tough amount to reach, but
it was possible. I knew that I could at least get a return of $1,000
or so. So I did it!! As per the instructions in the article, I mailed
out ('snail mail' for you e-mail fanatics) a single dollar bill to
each of the five people on the list that was contained in the article.
I included a small note, with the dollar, that stated "Please Add Me
To Your List." I then removed the first position name of the five
names listed and moved everyone up one position, and I put my name in
position five of the list. This is how the money starts rolling in!
I then took this revised article now with my name on the list and
REPOSTED IT ON AS MANY NEWSGROUPS AND LOCAL BULLETIN BOARD
MESSAGE AREAS THAT I KNEW. I then waited to watch the money come
in...prepared to maybe receive about $1000 to $1500 in cash or so....
But what a welcome surprise when those envelopes kept coming in!!! I
knew what they were as soon as I saw the return addresses from people
all over the world -Most from the U.S., but some from Canada, even
some from Australia! I tell you, THAT WAS EXCITING!! So how much did
I get in total return? $1000? $5000? Not even!!! I received a total
of $23,343!!! I couldn't believe it!!
I now have a brand new black Acura Integra to speak for, due to
this!! Now after almost 8 months, I am ready to do it again!!! So
maybe it was possible to get $50,000 in cash, I don't know, but IT
COMPLETELY DEPENDS ON YOU, THE INDIVIDUAL! You must follow through
and repost this article everywhere you can think of! The more
postings you achieve will determine how much cash will arrive in your
very own mailbox!! It's just too easy to pass up!!!
Let's review the reasons why you should do this: The only cost
factors are for the five stamps, the 5 envelopes and the 5 one dollar
bills that you send out to the listed names by snail mail (US Postal
Service Mail). Then just simply repost the article (WITH YOUR NAME
ADDED) to all the newsgroups and local BBS's you can. Then sit back
and, (ironically), enjoy walking (you can run if you like! :o ) down
your driveway to your mailbox and scoop up your rewards!! We all have
five dollars to put into such an easy effortless investment with
SPECTACULAR REALISTIC RETURNS OF $15,000 to $25,000 in about 3-5
weeks! So HOLD OFF ON THOSE LOTTERY NUMBERS FOR TODAY,
EAT AT HOME TONIGHT INSTEAD OF TAKEOUT FROM McDONALDS AND INVEST FIVE
DOLLARS IN THIS AMAZING MONEY MAKING SYSTEM NOW!!! YOU CAN'T LOSE!!
So how do you do it exactly, you ask? I have carefully provided
the most detailed, yet straightforward instructions on how to easily
get this underway and get your cash on its way. SO, ARE YOU READY TO
MAKE SOME CASH!!!?? HERE WE GO!!!
*** THE LIST OF NAMES IS AT THE END OF THIS ARTICLE. ***
OK, Read this carefully. Get a printout of this information, if you
like, so you can easily refer to it as often as needed.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Take a sheet of paper and write on it the following: "Please add
my name to your list". This creates a service out of this money
making system and thus making it completely legal. You are not just
randomly sending a dollar to someone, you are paying one dollar for a
legitimate service. Make sure you include your name and address. I
assure you that, again, this is completely legal! For a neat little
twist, also write what slot their name was in: "You were in slot 3",
Just to add a little fun! This is all about having fun and making
money at the same time!
2. Now fold this sheet of paper around a dollar bill ,(no checks or
money orders), and put them into an envelope and send it on its way to
the five people listed. The folding of the paper around the bill will
insure its arrival to its recipient. THIS STEP IS IMPORTANT!!
3. Now listen carefully, here's where you get YOUR MONEY COMING TO
YOUR MAILBOX. Look at the list of five people; remove the first
name from position one and move everyone on the list up slot one on
the list. Position 2 name will now move to the position 1 slot ,
position 3 will now become position 2, 4 will be 3, 5 will be 4. Now
put your name, address, zipcode AND COUNTRY in position 5, the bottom
position on the list.
4. Now upload this updated file to as many newsgroups and local bulletin
boards' message areas & file section as possible. Give a
catchy description of the file so it gets noticed!! Such as: "NEED
FAST CASH?, HERE IT IS!" or "NEED CASH TO PAY OFF YOUR DEBTS??", etc.
And the more uploads, the more money you will make, and of course, the
more money the others on the list will make too. LET'S ALL TAKE CARE
OF EACH OTHER BY BEING HONEST AND BY PUTTING FORTH 120 PERCENT INTO
THIS PROFITABLE & AMAZING SYSTEM!!! You'll reap the benefits, believe
me!!! Set a goal for the number of total uploads you'll post, such as
15-20 postings or more! Always have a goal in mind!!!
If you can UUE encode the file when uploading, that will make it
easier for the people to receive it and have it downloaded to their
hard drive. That way they get a copy of the article right on their
computer without hassles of viewing and then saving the article from
the File menu. Don't alter the file type, leave it as an MS-DOS Text
file. The best test is to be able to view this file using Microsoft's
Notepad for Windows 3.x or WordPad for Windows '95. If the margins
look right without making the screen slide left or right when at the
ends of the sentences, you're in business!
5. If you need help uploading, simply ask the sysop of the BBS, or
"POST" a message on a newsgroup asking how to post a file, tell them
who your Internet provider is and PEOPLE WILL ALWAYS BE GLAD TO HELP.
I would try to describe how to do it but there are simply too many
internet software packages with slightly different yet relatively
simple ways to post or upload a file. Just ask for help or look in
the help section for 'posting'. I do know that for GNN, you simply
select 'POST' then enter a catchy description under the subject box,
choose 'ATTACH', selecting 'UUE' and NOT 'TXT', then choose 'Browse' to go
look for the file. Find your text file CASH.TXT
and click on it and choose 'OK'. Place a one line statement in the
main body section of the message post screen. Something like "Download
this to read how to get cash arriving in your mailbox with no
paybacks!" or whatever. Just make sure it represents its true
feasibility, NOT something like..."Get one million dollars flooding in
your mailbox in two days!" You'll never get ANY responses!
6. And this is the step I like. JUST SIT BACK AND ENJOY LIFE BECAUSE
CASH IS ON ITS THE WAY!! Expect to see a little money start to
trickle in around 2 weeks, but AT ABOUT WEEKS 3 & 4, THE MONEY STORM
WILL HIT YOUR MAILBOX!! All you have to do is take it out of the
mailbox and try not to scream too loud (outside anyway) when you
realize YOU HIT THE BIG TIME AT LAST!!
7. So go PAY OFF YOUR BILLS AND DEBTS and then get that something
special you always wanted or buy that special person in your life (or
the one you want in your life) a gift they'll never forget. ENJOY
LIFE!
8. Now when you get low on this money supply, simply re-activate
this file again; Reposting it in the old places where you originally
posted and possibly some new places you now know of. Don't ever lose
this file, always keep a copy at your reach for when you ever need
cash. THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE TOOL THAT YOU CAN ALWAYS RE-USE TIME AND
TIME AGAIN WHEN CASH IS NEEDED!
9. (This step added by Charles Reiley). Hello, This is exciting
isn't it?! While I'm on the list, just add a note saying "Please
include extra money tips" with your name & E-MAIL address, and I will
(FOR FREE) send you some neat methods to increase the money you will
receive with this plan.
Why?... Why not? I'm not a selfish jerk...I like helping out others.
E-mail just makes it a touch easier and cheaper, too! After I drop
off the list, I can no longer offer you this advice, obviously, but
maybe someone else who gets my tips will offer and simply replace my
name on this step number 9. Good luck and give this plan your all, it
will definitely pay off!
Like Mike said, HAVE FUN WITH IT!!!

I cant remember which member of GnR said it, although i think it
was Slash, said how much he thought some of the Illusions songs were
ruined with all the orchestra they threw in. November Rain became a
whole other song, i'd kinda like to hear that without all the strings,
it'd probably sound pretty cool. And a whole archestra definately does
break up the tight band thing.
But i also think it can be done right and sound reeallly cool, but
you have to find someone who could do it right, which is slim, and most
likely end up with something not too hot. Didnt Steve Vai plan to play
with an orchestra for a Frank Zappa tribute thing or somethin'? Did he
ever get around to doing it? I think that'd be pretty cool because Vai
pretty much works on his own anyway, and a guitar soloing over an
orchestra would sound pretty bitchin'. And i also recall an interview
around the time ALS came out where he said his next album would be fall
9... anyways i saw him live last summer and he sang a little, hes not
that bad a vocalist! He blows Satch (who's bald now?!?!) out of the
sky when it comes to singing. Steve was also the first to get on the 7
string. It was kinda funny because Ibanez released it thinking all the
metal-heads would go nuts, but it was all the death metal guys who
bought them, Morbid Angel and Korn use them, as well as others, and of
course Johnny boy Petrucci.
And one more thing, i check out the newsgroup every once in a
while, the big thing there now is weather or not DT is a "Heavy Metal"
band... it gets pretty pathetic but if youre bored it provides for
some entertainment!

Hello Jammers,
I'd like to address Mape's idea for a library of jammer's CD lists. I
think that part is a great idea, but I don't think the purpose should be
to dub copies of CDs for others, a compilation tape tree or something
would be a good application. I own a lot of material by independent label
bands that I have been given or purchased and I'd rather give it out as
compilation tapes so people can get a taste for a band's music and not
have the album. A lot these groups need your support, sending around dubs
of their albums won't do much to help them.
Ideas?
Later,
Mike

OK!
Extreme does kick major ass. But they're not as consistent as DT in
songwriting; plus I just don't grok with all the political posing. I mean,
really, (IMHO) it gets silly when Cherone's all righteous and
Fight-The-Power and No-More-War, and then suddenly, in comes Nuno's blazing
guitar solo for the next 3 minutes. On the new album, though, it's a
little better: Nuno doesn't even overdub! (Which is kind of cool, I admit,
in its immediacy, but I do like double-tracked guitar breaks.). That is
Nuno's band, and Nuno's band alone-- I don't see how Nuno's solo project
will sound any different than Extreme... except he'll be singing and
playing every damn instrument. Also Nuno rocks JP's world on acoustic
guitar. Midnight Express... awesome.
Back to DT.

> Listen to the cheesy strings on Nothing Else Matters. Enough said.
"Water their sound?" That's not exactly the first description that comes
to mind when talking about orchestral music. I wasn't talking about some
cheesy strings layered in over top of DT's music (like Nothing Else
Matters, you're right)-- I mean like full arrangements, with a huge, rich,
layered sound. And not just slapped on top as icing on the cake (like so
many other orchestral "accompaniments" that you hear in rock music), but
intertwined into the music.
That was always one of the reasons why I dug DT from a keyboard
perspective: they actually incorporate the keys into the song, instead of
just being decoration. If you took out the keys, the songs would be
lacking, even if JP does get the spotlight. In this case, make the
orchestra an integral part of the songs, adding countermelodies, symphonic
percussion, brass, harp, etc. A big production here. (Admittedly, Derek
might not have much to do, unless he manned the piano or some extra
synths.) But I do not consider symphonic music the sort of thing that
would "water down" DT's music, given a good arrangement, instrumentation,
and production. Given those 3 factors, it would sound SO powerful and SO
insanely great.
I can see this happening if DT becomes more successful soon and can
convince the record company that it will be worth it. Or I can see this
happening in like 20 years when they're all old and fat and doing the whole
Pink Floyd/Moody Blues/Eagles thing, charging $115 a ticket and touring
with 2 drummers, 3 keyboardists, and some offstage rhythm guitarists...
bleah. Hope not.
If there's any doubt as to the heaviness of symphonic music, I suggest that
you all go out and buy the "Stargate" film soundtrack, composed by David
Arnold and performed by the kick-ass Sinfonia of London. The movie was
pretty good, not great, but the music-- this is to orchestral music what
heavy metal is to Top 40. Great music, heavy as hell, awesome for
blasting. Good film scores just kick ass... Williams, Elfman, Silvestri.
DT could probably do a mean film soundtrack themselves, some phat sci-fi
movie (not some shit action movie like rock musicians tend to do).
And Mr. Vai, did you use the Anagram Generator at infobahn.com ("Main
Sanitary Nag"), or did you actually sit around making them up yourself?
By the way, when I was talking about snares a few posts ago, of course I
meant piccolo snare, not soprano. That always escapes me.
Scott.

-Hiya everyone,
-This is a reply to the guy who asked about John Myung
-playing "fingerstyle bass". This term is used correctly.
-John uses three fingers on his right hand to pluck the
-strings in a ring-middle-index pattern much like throwing
-a baseball.
Cliff Burton played the same way I think but I'm not sure
if he was 2 or 3 fingers. I always had a hard time even
trying to play with 3 fingers but I did get the hang of it
at one point. I didn't like it, so, now I'm back to my 2
fingers.
-Playing fingerstyle in this matter allows one
-to play faster than with two fingers or with a pick
No it doesn't. Thats an assumption. More fingers will not
give you better speed or allow you to be fast than a pick
player. I know you bring up David later on so I'll bring
him up now. If your saying, someone with 3 fingers can play
FASTER than a person like David Ellefson who uses a pick,
your insane...1)If you've ever listened to Rust In Peace,
you'll KNOW that Ellefson plays faster than any DT song
they have ever written and probably even harder to play. I
mean, listen to David's past work with deth, ESPECIALLY on
Killing is my business (as much as I hate that cd) a 3
fingered player would have to bust his/her ass to play that
speed. I don't want to be slamming bass players but there
are those that are better than others and alot of them to
me could run circles around JM. I'll name example if need
be.
-For an example of the difference
-between picking and fingerstyling bass check out David
-Ellefson's bass lines on Rust in Peace as compared to John
-Myungs bass lines onj Images and words; both lines are
-incredibly fast and complex but Myung sounds deeper and
-fuller
Um, the reason for that is the amps there using and also
the way it was mixed, also, the type of pick that was used.
I wouldn't call I&W extremely fast either. Complexity is
about the only thing I&W is.
-while Ellefson has a quicker "kick" and cuts
-through the mix a little better due to the severity and
-timbre of his picking attack. Both are amazing bassists
-and are two of my favorites (I am a six-string bassist)
-and both have strongly influenced my playing.
Kick? I assume you mean the sound when he hits his strings.
What you've been talking about is the sound thats coming
out of your amp dude. I sound like Steve harris 80% of the
time and I play with my fingers and thats because 90% of
the work from my bass amp and the other 10% is from my
fingers, not anything else.
Regardless of that, it's a combination which makes each
sound. What sounds good with what bass amp or FX unit
etc...it's also personal preference as well.
-As to Megadeth touring with DT I would love it! Megadeth
-has a habit of touring with great up and coming bands (ie
-Stone Temple Pilots,
What tour did they go on? I don't recall any tour with STP
and Megadeth? I think you might be referring to Suicidal
Tendancies.
-Korn, Fear Factory,
Korn...I hope they get their guitars stuck inbetween their
teeth so I don't have to listen to them yell into the
microphone and TRY to play their out of tune guitars.
-Corrosion of -Conformity
GREAT band, I caught the last half of their set when I saw
deth on the Youthinamerica tour...in-fucking-credible.
-In the past
-Mustaine has been difficult to get along with but he seems
-to be stabalizing in the last couple of years.
-I saw them in concert while they were supporting Countdown
-to Extinction and they were fantastic, they were
-considerate of the fans and put on a great show.
Yea, well, you'd be an asshole to get a long with too if
you were coming off years of drug abuse too. To quote "I
was an asshole back then, I'm an asshole now, I know I'm
doing it, I just need to figure out why"-DM
-There was no flash-pots or naked babes that other bands
-use to keep a stage presence. The emphasis was on the
-music and the energy really came accross; the pit was
-intense. As to Musitaine calling Queensryche "music for
-pussies" I believe Mustaine actually called them "yuppie
-fag metal".
yup, he's said all that too.
-I never said Mustaine hadn't been insensitive on many
-occasions and his scathing wit has gotten him in hot water
-on several occasions, but there are MANY band members who
-trash other bands (for some reason Axl Rose comes to
-mind-I hate GNR).
yea but Dave M is respected for a big reason and that is,
he has opinions and he can back them up. If he says
something, he has no problem with backing it up.
-The truth of the matter is that
-Megadeth has helped to create and lend musical credibility
-to a fledling style of music (Killing is my Buisiness...
-is INFINATLEY more intricate and complex than Metallica's
-Kill 'Em All or anything by Slayer, Exodus or Overkill.
Overkill....if deth had continued on the same route that
they did for RIP, those 2 would be touring together. I'm
beginning to like Overkill a bit more than Megadeth in the
listening department. pick up Wrecking your Neck Live, you
won't be disappointed.
-Mustaine's lyrics are more challenging and meaningful than
-Metallica, Fates warning or I Mother Earth.
Those Lyrics are based on personal experience though, not
stories etc...A few of deth's songs are of course based on
stories, Hanger 18 is one of them. I'd say alot of DT's
lyrics are quite deep as well, like on metropolis or Lie
(whatever the hell james means on "and you can tell your
grandfather I said so")
They are one
-of the few Progressive Metal bands (yes they are
-Progressive-check out anything from Rust in Peace), to
-have broken in platinum popularity status while still
-making complex music. (Yes, I know Youthanasis is not as
-complex as Rust..., but the music is still more complex
-than many Fates Warning or even Savatage songs.) They have
-been creating music for more than 13 years and created
-some incredible songs and influenced ALOT of bands
-including our own Dream Theater.
I wouldn't call Megadeth progressive but developing a new
style of music, most definetly. I would agree with you
about your comment of the fates warning songs being less
complex but I can only agree with you on the new material,
not the older stuff. Old Fates Warning is progressive to a
"P". The new stuff is cool but not like the old.
-If you don't like
-Megadeth that's fine with me but dislike them for their
-musical tastes, not Mustaine's mouthing.
You mean the music they play not their tastes, I could care
less what Mustaine digs for tunes.
