    Dear Jammers,

Hi there! I just got off the phone with Derek Sherinian and he wants to
send a really important message to the Japanese ytsejammers. He said
that he wishes to thank all of you Japanese jammers for voting him Fourth
    in the Burrn Magazine Poll.

Derek also says that he and Dream Theater really appreciates everything
that the Ytsejammers have been doing for them over the years and that
they love what we are all doing. Pretty cool!

Anyways, I think that's pretty much it. I'll talk with you guys soon!

    Yours,
    Jeff =)

Well....there seems to be a lot of arguement going into this whole
tuned/not-tuned thing, and I think I have a solution. Here at Rutgers
Univ., where I exist, we tend to lump percussion into two groups:
Melodic and Non-Melodic. I am primarily a timpanist, but I also play
marimba, non-melodic concert percussion, and drumset. Although tuning
is an important factor in playing a drumset or other non melodic
percussion, it just is not approached in the same manner as when
playing timpani. It is the difference between trying to achieve a
louder base tone with weaker partials(like timpani) and having a
fairly evenly balnced set of volumes for the root and partials (like a
cymbal) or a tone lacking almost all of the partials (like a snare)
that really differentiates the type of tuning one wishes to
achieve. This is not to say that pitch is less important (or unimportant)
for non-melodic percussion, it's just different. This is just the way
    I look at it.

Hate to correct your correction, but Saturday Night Live was doing "Not" back in the Dan Akroyd/Jane Curtain days. B & T probably did get it from Anthrax, Tho. I don't claim to know where Anthrax got it from.

Toms are tuned, or at least "tunable"

    >>Since the sound >>produced by a snare drum is very short, it's difficult to really hear a >>definite pitch. > >Play a VERY short note on a piano or a guitar and tell me if you can recognize >it. I can. I don't need time to hear it.

The reason most people can't find the note in a snare hit is that the rattle things add more waves. If you add a few waves on top of one, you get chords. Add more waves, and eventually they start to cancel each other out and combine in weird ways and you get white noise -- no recognizable pitch. Mike's Snare on ACOS has too much pitch, not enough white noise. I agree with that.

    >The physics classes I've taken have finally panned out! Sorry man, but that's >not quite right. Amplitude is independent of frequency. Meaning, the harder >you hit a drum, a tuning fork, a guitar string or anything else, the louder >it's going to be, but it's still going to give you the same pitch. It's just >going to be louder. Whack a tuning fork hard and you get whatever pitch it is. >Just tap it and it's the same pitch, just a lot softer. The same holds true >for a drum head.

Nope, Brian's got the physics down. In drums, a weaker hit will result in a lower pitch as well as a lower amplitude, due to the nature of ther instrument. Analog instruments tend to have funny tendencies like that. ;) In fact, the better digital samples of drums can alter their pitch as well as their volume with velocity. Makes for a more realistic drum sound.

    Bafu!

As someone else said, it was Lion, not White Lion who did the TF theme song. I still have it on tape. :) "Instruments of Destruction!" :)

I hadn't planned on mentioning this, but since there has been SO much talk about Mr.Big on the Jam lately, I figured what the hell....

I guess it's really no big deal, but it was cool for me...Paul Gilbert and Eric Martin (guitarist and vocals) of Mr.Big actually (gulp..here's the part no one will believe) warmed up for my old band once back in 1989! It wasn't an intentional "warm up", but they ended up going on stage before us at the Troubador in Hollywood. It was my first show in Hollywood, and I was with a band called The Riff. Paul had gotten a few guys together to jam just for fun that night, and they went under some wierd name, but HIS name ended up on the Marquee outside right above ours!(i have a photo of it for proof) I was nervous that night BEFORE I knew he was there, but when I found out they were going on stage right before us I just about fainted. Needless to say they played great, and although we were intimidated we still got a nice reception from the crowd. I've had a few similar "brushes with fame" during my actual 8 years playing professionally. We were even personally invited backstage by Bon Jovi when we were on tour in Argentina! It was their first tour down there (mine too), and they were working through the same production agency as us. Anyway, I'll shut up now....

Also, E-man, can you mail me the number of that Manny's music you were telling me about? Ah...here is where the problem arises (Referring to Sec. B, pts. a, b, and c). If anyone would like to see Ytse-Quote(tm) actually develop into more than just a cute little activity to pass the time on IRC, I need some feedback. Right now, my grandiose plan includes a large-scale tournament, with prizes awarded to the winner(s). Unfortunately, no one seems to understand that we can't just up and do it one day.

If you would like to play Ytse-Quote(tm), or you've got no idea what the FUCK we're talking about, e-mail me. If you want to know the rules, I'll help. If you don't know how to access IRC, I'll help. If you have a flat tire, I'll...never mind.

If this is to materialize, I'm gonna need some feedback. Let me know what would be good days and times for you to be on the channel, and we'll do whatever else we need to.

Well, there are two definitions. The first definition of soundboard is the big thing with knobs and sliders and such that the soundguy uses to mix the levels and effects of all the inputs. Inputs refers to all the things that are miked or lined into the board - voices, drums, etc...

The other definition is a bootleg recording that was recorded by running a cable from the line out jack of the board to a line in jack on a tape recorder.

I bring this up, because you didn't really make it clear which one you want defined. Let us know, and let's see if we can agree on an answer.

Tonight was the greatest night of my life. I went to see Al DiMeola live at Lehigh University in PA. It was so absolutely cool. If you care to read, continue, but there will be no DT content here. I arrived at about five o'clock for an eight o'clock show because it was general admission and I wanted the best seat in the house. As I'm sitting there enjoying the three hour wait that ensued, a white Jeep Grand Cherokee stopped in the middle of the road in front of the place. My two friends and I were the only ones there at that time. The driver who I couldn't see because I didn't have my glasses on, yelled out, "Who is playing tonight?!" I obviously yelled back "Al DiMeola!" Then the jeep took off and peeled out around the corner. After about an hour after about ten more people were standing in line, this guy came outside to smoke a cigarette, wearing an Al DiMeola Project jacket. I went up to him and asked him if Al had arrived yet, figuring he was on the crew. He said, "Yeah. Weren't you just out here?" "Umhmm," I replied, "I've been out here for a while now." He then said, "you are the one he asked who is playing tonight. He does that before every gig just to see what people say." Of course at that moment I shit myself in disbelief. I said to him, "Thanks man, I appreciate it," and I walked back to my spot in line. As you could have guessed, I was in the front of the line, so when they finally let us in late after numerous monitor problems they were having during soundcheck, I was the first in. (excuse the run on sentences. Its three in the morning.) I got THE BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE. I was in the front row center, about seven feet away from god, oops, I mean Al. Anyway, when the show started, Al came out, and then the guy who told me about Al in the jeep came out. Obviously, I was very confused. Turns out that the guy I talked to was Gumbi Ortiz, his percussionist. Man, I felt like a dick. Well, no big deal, I was just a few feet away from Al. Holy shit, I came about ten times! After about twenty minutes into the set, he said that he needed another pick, and asked if anyone in the audience wanted the one he was just using. Of course I jumped up and snatched it out of his hand. YES! LIFE IS GOOD! When they had sound problems later in the concert, I told him to just pull the plug and play without it, and he did! Of course the PA let out an astounding bang because of it. He asked if we could hear it, and everyone in the first few rows were screaming, "Sure I can hear it," so he played to us with just the acoustic. It was so fucking cool! When they figured out what the problem was, Al went to start playing, and my friend reminded him that he forgot to plug in after he began to play unsuccessfully. After he ended with Mediterranean Sundance, he signed autographs, and I got my poster signed, and my Orange and Blue and where Have I Known You Before CD covers signed. I then proceeded to wet my pants again! WHAT A NIGHT! If you get the chance to see him- don't miss it. For those of you who do not know who he is, he is the most amazing guitarist on the planet with chops that blow JP out of the water. Don't get me wrong, JP is great, but he even sights him as an influence. If you ever hear him, you'll understand what I mean when I say that there is no one with this man's technical abilities out there. He must be seen.

P.S. Whoever it was arguing about Dave Ellefsen, or whatever his name is from Megacliche, "OPEN YOU EARS!" This man should not be compared to Myung. If you want to talk about talented bassists, maybe a discussion about Clarke, Patitucci, or Manring is in order!

Firstly, I am going to wager that Anthrax got the thole not thing from a Run/DMC song. If anybody ever heard the King of rock, in the beginning of the song, there's this sample of them just saying not. It happens to fall on a drum hit. This is the same Not used in the I am the Man song. If you haven't noticed, the famous Sam Kineson scream is in that song as well as a sample from aMaster Of Puppets from Metalica, and lord knows what else.

-Whoah. Someone else remembers this song.

The whole "not" bit came from Anthrax's EP called pegnikcufecin and there was a song called "I'm The Man" that started out, at least the studio version did, with the drums doin a funky beat and the band yelling "NOT!"...It's a hilarious song and its also to the Jewish tune, Havanageela (I know its misspelled but I'm not Jewish so I really have no clue)

This came out in, 86 I think. I gotta check that but who knows, oh well, little antrax-ology for ya.
