Hey jammers:

I was at the bookstore today and I saw this book in the
psychology section that caught my eye. It was called Dream Theatres of
the Soul. It is a book about dreams, but I figured some of you would be
interested since after all the title does say Dream Theatre. :) In case
any of you are interested in finding this book, the authors name is Jean

Hi jammers,

I can unofficially announce that Mr. Peter Collins (Rush and Queensryche)
will produce the next DT album!!!! Great!
I really like his work on Empire (QR), Hold your Fire, Power windows and
Counterparts (Rush). If Peter Collins can manage to sound Portnoy's snare
like the snare on Empire I guess no one will complain anymore : )
(However I really like the snare on I&W, while I'm a drummer).

Well I'm from europe (holland actally) and I've heard DT once on the radio here
('Another Day' of course) in a program that was taken off the air because the lady
who presented it played to much heavy stuff ('Another Day' right!) in her show. So
the popularity of prog. is definitly NOT due to radio play!

American band very often state that european fans are more loyal to bands and less
subject to trends and stuff. Sadly enough I think this is changing big time. DT is
very popular here, concerts usually sold out in a couple of hours. A reason for
the popularity of prog bands in holland might be that dutch people are usually
rather obstinate and like obstinate people. Prog band are often made up
off obstinate people (DT surely is) so there might be a connection there.

Im a talking nonsense? Flame me all you want, I'm cold anyway!

XWindows is Unix's version of DOS's Windows 3.1. It is totally different from Win 3.1 (i.e. it's not a copy, that's just an analogy.) So no, you probably can't use thet majesty symbol pointer thingie. I don't know much about XWindows, but I'm assuming the cursor is used for the Unix windows, right? There's no way that I know of to change cursors in DOS, and if there was, I doubt you could use a UNIX cursor.

Meaning, the harder you hit a drum, a tuning fork, a guitar string or anything else, the louder it's going to be, but it's still going to give you the same pitch. It's just going to be louder. Whack a tuning fork hard and you get whatever pitch it is. Just tap it and it's the same pitch, just a lot softer. The same holds true for a drum head."

Yes...you are correct sir! However, the musical psychology class I took a few years back when I was in school (what a bird course!) says that we tend to perceive amplitude as a modifier of pitch. It is proven that more amplitude fools the untrained listener to believe the pitch is higher than the same note played quieter.

Hello everybody!!

Yesterday I went in Milan to see Mike and John's clinic, and it was REALLY WONDERFUL!! It was their last date, I think, and one of the few they did together, so I had the privilege of seeing them onstage together!

They started jamming together with an Italian bassist, who was really cool, and did some nice job. They started jamming on Little Wing by Jimi Hendriks, then they started some great rock-funky jam. Both John and Mike had the chance to show their abilities and the result was truly awesome. Then Mike had its clinic. He kept the spoken lesson quite short, as there were about 400 people and not all of them were drummers. He explained some of his fills and played Erotomania with a DAT, the middle part of Metropolis (just the drum part), he played along with a drum machine, he played an incredible solo, and he played Raise the Knife. He played along with an instrumental DAT with no vocals, but I liked the song very much. I can't wait for the new album...

Then John came; he explained some exercises and played along with a sequencer, doing some really beautiful solos, including the Etude from Chopin, that really took my breath away! (I play the piano, so.... how does he do that?!) Then John played along with another new song, that was very different from Raise the Knife. It was about 6 minutes long, but it was quite ear-friendly, easy to listen to, with a catchy chorus that said something like "Where are you going"; I think it would be quite a radio-friendly tune, also because it's not as complicated as most of DT's song. I liked that very much.

The only thing about those two new songs, the keyboards were very low and sometimes I didn't even hear them; and absolutely no key solos. Was it connected with the DAT mixing, or was it that Derek wants to remain in the mix? Someone told me that yesterday John (or Mike?) said that the main difference between Kevin and Derek was that Derek liked to play more accompaniment parts rather than soloing. I hope this isn't true, because I play keyboards, and of course I like hearing keyboards! Anyone who has heard some new demos know more?

Finally they went back on stage and did another great jam, and then I managed to have John's photograph signed!

Sorry for the long post, but I'm still excited!!

Ok, drum head physical non-believers, pretend you have a long, thin drum head -- we'll call it a "string." Ok? Tie that string pretty tightly between two fixed points. Ok? Now bang on the string with a drum stick, or pluck it with a pick or something. Whoa! That string is shaking all over the place! Now, pluck the string again, but MUCH harder than the first time. The string will be vibrating with much greater amplitude, yes, but at the instant the string was plucked this time, the tension in the string was increased, thus increasing the pitch of the note produced. If any of you guitarists have tuners, you know that if you pick a note really hard, it's a little sharper than the "same note" picked at a regular velocity. Yes, this pitch increase is tiny, and it only really occurs at the instant of excitation of the string (or drum head, or whatever oscillating medium....). That's why I was wondering how Larry could recognize the pitch of the snare drum, yet not any differences thereof. I was kinda kidding, anyway.

I'm a lover, not a fighter.

Brian

ps- I still think it's silly to call someone self-indulgent because of the way that person's snare drum sounds. So is Cindy Crawford self-indulgent because of that mole? Ok, I'll stop..... :)

pps- No, I didn't actually strike another creature because of its self-indulgentness. I just dealt with it. :)

I was gonna get one just to have it and to see if it was digitally cleaned up at all, but I didnt does anyone have the (USA) re-release of WDADU, and does it sound any better than the original????

Um, excuse me? I think you should hear some Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, Paco DeLucia (Check out Friday Night in San Francisco), Assad Brothers, and Andres Segovia. Unless you're talking about a strictly acoustic player going electric. Even then, the transition is not that difficult. And your "bleah!" reference? I take it you don't like acoustics. Granted, they usually don't sound good with distortion, but that's really not what they're for anyway.

If you know how to play one, then you know how to play the other. Even though they might feel different the skills for playing each is the same. However, a typing keyboard and a synth keyboard require different skills for their use. I think of acoustics and electrics like a glass of iced tea and a glass of Pepsi. They both do the same thing (quench your thirst) and involve the same physical process (swallowing, digesting) even though they taste different.
