Damn, when you live from dusk till dawn, you have a lot of time
    to see movie premieres... :)

They definitely should have had Dream Theater do the soundtrack
for Mission Impossible. I think they've proven they can do it. The poppy
MI theme they had was acceptable, but inferior.

As for the movie itself, it had a lot of hype to live up to, and
it couldn't possibly. It's a good movie in its own right, but not THAT
good, not IMHO as good as Twister (which was only above average), not
even as good as some of the stuff from earlier this year. The writing
wasn't bad though... you really were guessing until right near the end,
when Ethan (Cruise) puts it all together.

But the real news here is ID4! I saw the trailer for it before
the film, and holy shit, this movie looks intense. If it's even one iota
as good as the preview, it's the movie of the year hands down. ID4 looks
like a groundbreaking film that may well be compared to Star Wars... at
least until the new SW films arrive in 2 years. Can't wait till July 3...

            Take it easy everyone!

OK, here's a question. Someone (was it you, Mirth Mobile?) once tried to convince me that live endings to PMU have more beats or something than the studio version. I just don't hear it. What I hear is a much more accentuated ending, stronger drum hits and such, but I don't think there are any extra beats in there. What's up with that?

All of 'em, and they all rock. Try to get your hands on the electric version of The Silent Man if you can. In the immortal words of Augie, "The Electric Version of The Silent Man Rules!" (Jack T., what's MLA form for quoting IRC, do you know?)

Wait, maybe I misunderstood you. They've played all of Awake and I&W. WDADU, on the other hand, they've shied away from.

I don't own Symbolic because I heard that SD was not on That's certainly not hard to do. I'm not too crazy about vocals in any form of music (especially opera) and I've gotten to the point where the vocals barely register any more. So, if any of you out there think Death fans thrive on the growling vocals, think again!!!!

    > though. I am curious if any 'jammers have rocked to the bands Sadus, Cynic, I haven't heard any of the other bands you mentioned, but I love Cynic's "Focus." Sean Reinert is just a drumming prodigy. The guy's got so much talent, and his playing keeps switching from a jazz feel to a metal feel. I love it!!!! The only reason I got into Death was because I was looking for more of his stuff (I bought "Symbolic" by accident, became a Hoglan fan, and eventually bought "Human", which features Reinert). I recommend both albums to any drummer, especially if you like to be awed by dazzling double-bass- and cymbal-work.

I hear what you're saying (I think) about typos and grammatical mistakes being a pain in the ass to read through. But it's not like all these errors are typed by people who are deliberately ignoring all spelling and grammatical conventions. A lot of times, it's just a mistake. When it is deliberate, it's usually because the poster is in a hurry or too lazy to type everything and wants to abbreviate, or because the poster is just drunk (or stoned) out of his/her mind (grin). In either case, I think the errors are justified.

IMO, he should get it straight by working by himself, or as a duo with a member of your band (the angry drummer, maybe?), like the bassist, with preferably a metronome. Not jamming on your songs, but very elementary rhythmic exercices. I experienced an out-of-rhythm guitarist years ago. We tried to correct it during rehearsals. Needless to say, it didn't work. We had to part ways with him. Good luck anyway.

Hi there its me again (can I hear some "oh no"s out there?),

While we're talking about tags (see the death metal thread) here, I thought I'd try to throw this thread in (I was thinking about this way before Charlie mentioned it) the jam:

    W H A T I S P R O G ????? (Mojo, don't say anything...)

What criteria do you or would you use to define a band as being prog? Here are some ideas to getcha started:

    - having a synth or other non-rock-conventional instruments; - doing weird rhythmics and/or chords; - long songs; - jazzy influences; - being or sounding technically outstanding.

Please note that I wish to make a SURVEY out of this (closing June 30th), so answer me if possible privately.

Hope you follow, because I find the subject interesting. I mean, we all say "prog" like we breathe, but do we really think about what it means?

Hey all, I've recently taken on the responsibility of booking and promoting my friend's band, and I wanted to point all ytsejammers in the direction of their temporary web site. This is by no means the final product, mind you... the band is in the middle of a name change and everything is pretty much on hold until they decide on a new name. This site is something I just threw together quickly in order to showcase some audio clips. So anyway, if you'd be so kind, please check out the site and download the song clips. I have a feeling their sound will appeal to a lot of DT fans, although they probably wouldn't be considered progressive for the most part (the song "Rain" contains some parts in 6/8 and 7/8). I won't try to compare their sound to other bands, because I don't want to color anyone's opinion from the start. Here's the URL. Send me some e-mail afterwards and let me know whatcha think!
