I bought the new King's X and it is not Dogman! Which is great, the
vocals of old have returned. I can't really decide where I would rank Ear
Candy with their other cds but it is a lot better than Dogman.
[flame mode off]
The cd that has really surprised me is Def Leppard's Slang. This album is
really good (IMHO or course). I may rank it above Hysteria. It is leagues
above Adrenalize.

Hey. I forget who it was that had this problem, but I have a solution.
Take him out to a blues club or a jazz club. Get him sauced, and find a
nice young lady who's willing to dance slow with him. If he can't find
the groove then, he's hopeless. :)

Hey you all,I've been seeing Trevor Rabin's name pop up on here a few
times.I'm a huge YES fan,and over the years seen Trevor play 4 times in
concert. For one show"Talk" I was front row right in his face. It's hard
to walk away and say he is not talented. As for not being with Yes
anymore,he just stepped down to do other stuff. As of now he is working
on movie soundtracks:I believe he worked on Twister, and might even be
uncredited here.He plans on re-releasing his solo stuff, and also wants
to put out a live C.D. from his "Can't Look Away"tour.Besides that he
has worked with several performers including Tina Turner and Michael
Jackoff. Till later-just

IMO, excellent advice. I have always said that keeping good time
cannot be taught, it is an innate skill, however, if someone is
borderline they can improve vastly by using a metronome of practicing
with a good drummer. I have played in bands with app. 35-40 musicians,
and only 2 had tempo problems - and guess what? - we had to let them
go, too. It just couldn't be corrected.
Hey all you Fates Warning fans, is "Chasing Time" a good disc for a
Fates-rookie to buy? I see that it's a compilation, and includes some
songs I've heard mentioned on the 'jam - should I get this or another
CD? (Columbia House has a 2 for 1 deal this month, and I'm getting
another copy of "Awake", so thought I'd get a free FW too).
Thanks in advance,
Larry

I'm not so sure. The vowel sounds aren't as pronounced as I'd expect a
wah-wah to sound. Also the sound isn't quite as creamy as I'd expect for
a wah. It sounds much more "grainy". I can't think of any talkbox
recordings (probably because I never listened to Peter Frampton, although
I'm told he's talkbox guy) except for "No Respect" by Extreme. The ACoS
passage sounds more like No Respect than Voodoo Chile. The only thing
that seems different is that the ACoS passage is higher notes. Also, I
remember hearing a NY area band, The Other Half, and the guitarist had
a talk box. I remember it sounding kind of like a wah, but it had a
different character. He didn't do any of those talk fx, but he just
messed around with the sound of his distortion; it wasn't as pronounced
a use of the box as the talking thing.

You ain't kidding. I was taking lessons with Alex Skolnick for a little
while. I would walk in humbly while he was working on his country riffs
or sometimes a jazz thing. We'd jam a bit to illustrate the use of some
new thing he showed me that day, and it's just apparent that he rips!!!
Nice guy too. It's a shame I haven't heard much of his stuff. I've only
heard his track on "Guitars that Rule the World" with Les Claypool, I think.
> good examples of Vinnie Coaluita's playing? I'm very interested in him.
The only examples of Vinnie Colaiuta's playing that I know of are with Sting.
Try "Ten Summoner's Tales", especially "Seven Days", which I believe is in
5/4 with some neat fills by Vinnie. I like "I Was Brought To My Senses" off
"Mercury Falling" too.

C'mon, Jack. Cut the crap. Metallica's Black album was
nothing but a bunch of fucking singles. The best tune on there was "Struggle
Within" and NOBODY without the album heard that song because all they knew was
"Sandman", "NEM", "Wherever I May Roam" and that other ploding, slow tune they
happened to make a video for. Get it? All video releases....MTV fodder. And
just because "Ten" wasn't popular where you live until 1992 or whatever date
you set on your calendar doesn't mean Pearl Jam wasn't getting lots of
attention elsewhere. Nirvana sold out at the Univ. of Ill. in Jan. of 1991
because people had heard their shit and loved it. As for Metallica driving
their producer crazy in the studio (yes I've seen "A yr. & 1/2...").....your
point would be..? ???? I'd like to think they drove Bob Rock crazy because
they weren't as completely sold on the radio bullshit they were recording as
he was. Until this thread came up, I never met a Metallica fan who liked the
Black album. I guess one man's vomit is another man's banquet.

I love the way people respond to arguments on this list. If you make any
generalization, don't put "IMHO", make figurative comments, etc. people beat
the shit out of you as if they've never heard of language. Then if you're
extremely precise, you'll get inverted reactions of "nitpicker", etc. I swear,
some people reply to things just to hear themselves type. (Kinda like I'm
doing now, though I hope a points been carried).
Anyway, the Chicago Trib. gave King's X'x latest 2.5 stars calling it a
"relaxed and poignant album." They continue saying "thier tradmark
spirituality remains at the forefront, while Pinnick waxes nostalgic.
(However) it's not an especially ausipicous follow-up to the cocky 'Dogman'".

Chris Oates....just read your post regarding how the Metallica/grunge thing
worked the other way when you graduated high school. I could happen. Colleges
have been known to "be ahead of the curve" for new music since the early 80s.
Not that college crowds were way into metal, but REM made big splashes on
campuses and college radio before MTV (BTW that happened with "Fall on Me"
from Document in 1987). So that could be why I had heard lots of PJ and
Nirvana before most others. Also, since Chicago is the #3 market in the world,
radio stations here get a lot of music before releases. I know "Sandman" was
played well before the album came out. I guess a lot of that whole argument
comes down to environment....right place right time, etc. I still think the
Black album sucked biggie, though. LATER-

Hiya,
DT played Space Dye Vest live? (You said the played all of Awake).
I just don't think DT or DS (Derek) would want to play a song that was sooo
totally Moore's. Although SDV was the one song I wanted to hear most when
I saw them live in Kansas City MO a year and a half ago. But then, I
thought that Derek Sherinian WAS Kevin Moore with a haircut!

King's X _Earcandy_
Overall:
This album is a more relaxed King's X album. It sounds closest to _Faith,
Hope, Love_ and _Out of the Silent Planet_. The production is much better
than Dogman. It doesn't have that "raw" feel. Lyrics are introspective
and honest. I'm very pleased with the album, except for a few songs where
the bass and the drums doesn't sound right for me.
"Train"
This is a good song..rather short...my initial reaction was that the bass
drum is too loud, but I have got used to it.
"Thinking and Wondering"
One of the slowest song on the album. The bass sounds too resounding.
Not a song you would expect from KX.
"Sometimes"
This is the single released to the radio stations. It is a
"radio-friendly" song, but this ain't a 3-5 power chord song. The lyrics
are repitious: "Sometimes, I want to..."
"A Box"
This song has a nice relaxing feel to it. The chorus is a little
repititous, but I like it.
"Looking for Love"
Heaviest song on the album...nowhere near the heaviness of Dogman.
Repitious chorus. Lyrics seem to describe a hard religious experience.
"Mississippi Moon"
My favorite song at the moment. Ty Tabor does lead vocals...nice vocal
harmonies followed by Ty's unique guitarwork.
"67"
I don't really like this song. It starts off similar to "Business" off
Dogman.
"Lies in the Sand"
Somber tune like "Flies and Blue Skies" I like it. Ty uses nice guitar
tones with his e-bow.
"Run"
Another song dealing with an oppresive religious experience...probably
written by Doug. Chorus: "I had to run, I had to hide, in a world
outside..."
"Fathers"
Second favorite tune. This song has an emotional effect on me which is
hard to describe. Lyrics start off: "My brother's on crack, my sister's
a wreck..." Then the great chorus comes in "Everyone of us loves
everyone of us. Everyone of us loves everyone." Cool bass sound.
"American Cheese"
Jerry Gaskill does lead vox...the song is kinda wierd, but I'm sure it
will grow on me.
"Picture"
Great song. Doug has a soothing voice...reminds me of Darius Rucker of
Hootie. The song slowly fades with dreamy instrumentation. I love that
part.
"Life going by"
Ty does lead vox...beatlesque sounding. Great introspective lyrics and
chorus.
KX album ranking:
Faith, Hope, Love
Gretchen goes to Nebraska
Out of the Silent Planet
self-titled
Dogman
Earcandy will probably be above or below OOTSP.
Walter.

>- long songs;
>- jazzy influences;

I don't think that sythns are necessary to prog (although the ceratinly
help). There are ceratin bands that are very proggy that don't have keys
namely Damn the Machine, Fates Warning, I Mother Earth, Megadeth (yes they
are dammit ;-), they have all the charactaristics of prog on most of their
albums, esp Rust in Peace).
Jazzy influences are very important to most prog, but I think that any
strange style of music can be fused witgh rock to form prog (ever hear of
the Hellecasters-Country prog!). Marty Friedman's middle eastern
influences, JP's occasional classical influences, Fates Warning Flamanco
guitar all progress the music in new directions.
long songs certyainly are a charactaristic of most prog bands, but I don't
see why there couldn't be a three minute prog song.
Has anyone heard of vanessa Mae the violin player? Man, what a fantastic
album! It's like industrial/dance/classical! She could do a totally
intense duet with DT that would rock the house. Check this girl out!
Cheers!

Yup. Last night. (While putting myself thru school, I work at a local
grocery, and it's traditional to bring in some music to jam to while stocking
shelves on a swing shift.) Anyway, I brought a pile of stuff to work, and
wound up working with another guy who just got back to town from his college.
Started with Enchant--A Blueprint of the World. "What's Enchant?" "Kinda
like Rush." We listen to the first track, and he tells me "I might listen
to Rush, but not those wannabes." Sigh. OK, try some DT (I know, I should'a
done that first. Sue me.) I put in my brand-spanking-new copy of WDATU.
He headbangs for a bit, and when James starts singing, he says "Holy shit!
This is worse than the last stuff. Sounds like Metallica with Pavarotti (sp?)
singing!" Double sigh.
Anyway, I asked him what he usually listened to, since he didn't like my
stuff. . . . "Rap, usually. But I like R&B, too." AUUGH! Another
DT-non-convert, for sure.
