As far as I can tell, Yngwie Malmsteen and Swedish Erotica are Sweden's only
two exports. (just kidding). Yngwie is possibly one of the most influential
guitar players of our time. The only guy who might have spawned more clones
than him is Eddie Van Halen. I'll admit, some of his recent music totally
sucks, but that doesn't take away from the fact that he is a top notch guitar
    player.

Here I go with the Top 10 Favorite Guitarists. No particular rankings/order.

    1. Nuno Bettencourt
    2. JP, of course
    3. Tuck Andress
    4. Jimi Hendrix
    5. Edward Van Halen
    6. Steve Vai
    7. Joe Satriani
    8. Michael Hedges
    9. For "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" (the album), not any live performances,
            John Frusciante
    10. This one's kind of like cheating. Larry Carlton and whoever played
guitar on Steely Dan's "The Royal Scam".

Hello everyone, it's BABS. Now if I remember correctly when everyone was

Now I believe one of my guesses was Metropolis Part II. So tell me, did I

These guys are awesome! I have Michael Hedge's live CD...which is just
him playing guitar and singing. It is great mellow music...killer
versions or All Along The Watchtower and Come Together. I also have "The
Larry Carlton Collection" CD on the GRP label....very good stuff.

On another note, I finally read the liner notes to Savatage's "Dead Winter
Dead" and it gave me a whole new impression of the album. I like it so
much better now!!! Did anybody notice in the thank you's a guy by the
name of Derek Sherimian? Is this our keyboard player, or somebody else?

    Okay get those flamethrowers ready:

    1. Yngwie may be an "embarrassment" to Swedes, but you can't touch his guitar
playing. Just ask John Petrucci, who once described his own playing as,
"I sounded like Yngwie, only not as good," back in the pre-WDADU days.

    2. Top 10 guitarists - if you don't like it, fuck you - if you've got something
better to talk about while we're in the off-season, then talk about it. If
you don't like them, then it is my pleasure to introduce you to the "return"
key - a marvelous device that takes you past the things you wish to skip.

        1. Steve Morse
            2. Steve Vai
            3. Joe Satriani
            4. Shawn Lane
            5. Paul Gilbert
            6. Michael Hedges
            7. John Petrucci
            8. John McLaughlin
            9. Ty Tabor
           10. Richie Kotzen

I'm not ranking these men on their musical abilities per se, rather on th
their influence on me. I'd also like to recognize the nonguitar-
            compositional influencers:
Frank Zappa (he would've been a guitar inflence if I had any
                            idea what he was doing)
Michael Manring - everyone get "Thonk" NOW!!!!!
the rest of Dream Theater - for being a BAND, rather than a
                            bunch of soloists
Apt. Q258 (Jeff Sipe) - his drumming is SOOO tight, he boggles
the mind on a 5-PIECE KIT!
                    Medeski, Martin, and Wood
                    Col. Bruce Hampton (retired)

If this was boring to you - just remember your friend, the return key.

I'd also like reiterate my position that RAP IS MUSIC! It's just challenges
our definitions so much that we're not sure how to deal with it. It DOES take
practice to rap and to spin turntables. Try it, try it, Sam-I-am. You just
might like green eggs and ham.

Please feel free to flame me at my address, rather than taking up space on the
    Jam with bad vibes.

    Hi Jammers

Just coming out of my shell to spread a little news to the South Florida
jammers out there. A friend of mine left a message for me saying that
Mike Portnoy will be making an appearance in Sarasota, Fl on Saturday,
June 8. I don't know any details yet, but for those interested, e-mail me

I finally found LatM in the imports section at Sam Goody. I bought that and
the Silent Man single. I nwould have listened to them more than twice if my
CD player didn't suck so much.

I know the CD's aren't defective because they play just fine in my portable.
My so called GOOD Cd player makes the songs skip to later parts in the song
without my conscent. I think that the laser is having a hard time moving
back and forth on its track, because when I touched it(not the lense, the
unit) it worked fine for a while.

    For example:

CD player: "I was told there's a miracle for/etropolis watches and
    thoughtfully smiles"

Me: "WHY DID YOU DO THAT? PLEASE!! PLEASE WORK YOU PIECE OF SHIT!!!!"

I need answers before the batteries in my portable run out.

    HELP!!

    Later,
    Cory

Four-tracks to buy.....I would recommend a Tascam over a Fostex (correct
name?) just because they've been making 'em a lot longer. I am also in the hunt
for a four-track so I've been doing some research. The 07 is the lowest end to
buy if you want bouncing capability (able to expand from four tracks to eight
(?)--I'm still a novice with the technology/terms so corrections welcome). The
best BUY from Tascam is the 424 mxII ( think it's "mx", the rest I know is
correct). At the local Guitar Center (Clark St. in Chicago) this model is only
$100 more than the 07 ($500 v. $400). You get electronic controls, greater LED
readout, 3-band eq for each input and auxilliary inputs. Basically, enough
extra features to spend the extra $100-$150.

I hope more people respond to your query 'cause I wanna learn more, too.
(HAIRBALL where the hell are you when we need ya!!!). Happy hunting.

    Hey everybody:

Just thought I'd let you know that I got an advance copy of Metallica
load(work at a music store). If I was Siskel and Ebert, I would give it two
thumbs up!!! It's alot more lyric driven and more melodic, kinda like the
black album. If any die hard Metallica fan is looking for the new album to
be more like Kill em All and stuff like that, I do not think they'll like it.
Overall, I think it's a pretty solid album. It really kicks if you have a
    good stereo!!!!

I for one will exclaim my approval for such a colorful album cover and
insert booklet. For once a band decided to go all out with the hues of the
known spectrum. And let's not forget about the actual disc. My bet is that
one day there will be art galleries with nothing but arty cds hanging on
    the walls. :)

    > But, nothing KX puts out is bad. This is one talented band.

Ya got that right. Do they ever, you know, tour? Someone told me they
caught King's X in a club after seeing a poster for the show that same
day. They did a super-extended version of "Moanjam." Just kept moanin' and
    jammin' and mojomannin' and...

    > Not nearly as heavy as Dogman, but definitely KX. Fans of older KX will
    > like it - fans of only Dogman may not. This is not a heavy metal record
    > by any stretch. Best live band I have ever seen. Everybody sings and
    > everybody can play the hell out of his instrument. Buy this.

Aha. So they DO tour... I second that last bit. I think I listened to that
album for three solid days after purchasing it. My cd-player is a
hatch-top (as opposed to the toaster kind, sliding drawer, whatever), and
when I went to actually OPEN the cd-player, the top popped open and the
disc was suddenly gone. After closer inspection I saw that the cd was
stuck on the rotating mechanism on the lid. Maybe a few more days and it
    would have fused... A King's X-clusive cd-player.

Otherwise, seems we got some damn big people on this list. Damon's
suggestion that Ytsecon turn into a riot doesn't sound like such a fun
idea anymore with all these 6'4" 250-lb. ytsegladiators running around...

    Hi.
I've got a few questions to ask of you Ytsejammers.

First of all, are there any Jammers in Las Vegas? BBlade? Are you
still in the land of the livin'? I asked a long time ago, but maybe somebody
subscribed in the time since then.

Second of all, does anyone want to give me about $15,000 so I can
get a really f*ckin' huge drumkit?

Third of all, and this is for all the Ytse-Drummers out there:

What exactly is Mike doin' during the beginning of the Scarred
outro. Y'know....the part with the bell. Is there some elusive pattern to
that or is Mike just doing a non-repeating bell-frenzy just to piss me off?
A few days ago I drummed along to the entirety of Awake, and that's the only
part that threw me off. Playing fine for 65 minutes then being lost for 16
or so measures isn't good for the temper. Well, MY temper.

Fourth of all, does anyone want to give me about $15,000 so I can
get a really f*ckin' huge drumkit?

            <grin> <beg> <drool> MONEY MONEY MONEY!

    And I listen openly.
    Ben Laussade
