Shit! Somehow I got switched over to the Metallica/Hockey mailing list.
I used to be on a Dream Theater list, but something strange happened.
<<<
This kind of shit is really starting to piss me off! Dream Theater
hasn't put out new material in almost a year; and it'll probably be
another nine months till the next one (if they stick to the Feb. 97
date). In the meantime, there are other things we are into as well as
DT. If we went by the logic of "this should be DT ONLY!" then I guess
we should discontinue the Jam until the new disc is ready for release.
At this time, someone can review it, and then we can discontinue the
Jam again until tour dates are announced, then stop the jam until they
start their tour. Since they usually play the same set every show,
we'll have someone review the show an then we'll discontinue the Jam
until the next disc comes out. Sounds pretty stupid, don't it!
Also, the Metallica list completely sucks Blue Whale's Dad. The guy who
runs that thing is a Fucking Idiot!

You forgot "IMO".

>(but I never really followed them b4....
Name a musical act who isn't involved in trends, whether directly or indirectly.
Even indirectly, groups sometimes take a reactionary stance, whether people
like it or not.
> I COULD HAVE predicted that they would cut their hair 3 years ago...
I could have predicted that too...I could have also predicted that they would
bathe,
sleep, and eat meals on a regular basis.
>.and I probably could have wrote a bunch of tunes and said 'this is what new
>Metallica is gonna sound like."
Probably not. Since the next album (after "Load") is due in about 18 months,
why
don't you give it a shot?
>Metallica has become the most predicatable group ever...and It's actually kind
of
>ironic...cause, everytime the group wins awards....you see Lars Ulrich come to
>accept the award and waste 10 minutes on how they struggled for years and no
>one recognized their musical integrity
Most award acceptance speeches are limited to 30 seconds to a minute,
maximum. And that's for the Oscars. I don't think DT would ever mind winning a
Grammy.
>...and now finally they are accepted...(and the funny thing, is that they had
to sell
>their souls in order to get recognized for their integrity (which really
doesn't exist))
They aren't completely accepted: I don't hear them on "light rock", "easy
listening",
or as bumpers for talk shows. I also don't see a Robert Johnson situation
transpiring.
>>Obviously they are more concerned with record sales than musical integrity.
You also forgot "IMO".
>> IMHO they've lost it, there will be no more Damage Inc.
Nope. And no Battery, Puppets, etc. either. Let's see, "Master Of Puppets" was
released 10 years ago. Bands go through tremendous change in the span of a
year (i.e. DT), let alone a decade.
>The new Def Leppard Album rocks more than that Metallica Single!!
In your opinion.
>OK, I guess I'm on the rag today or something - just waiting for the
>new DT CD and more DTC!
Don't hold your breath.
>The new Metallica is alright. I just hear them holding back
>way too much in parts. I mean I can totally see them breaking out
>in to some amazing heavy stuff at points in the song and they just
>don't. I really think they are targetting the radio now instead of
>the fans who have been with them for 10 years and more.
Listen to the whole album before you make judgment. As far as "targeting", I
think the band writes for themselves first, then the fans. If a band writes
strictly
for the fans, things could get pretty stagnant. Let the fans write their own
friggin'
music...
> A friend said something to me that scared the shit out of me. He said he
>heard the album was supposedly "grungy." This is even scarier. I dunno, I
just
>wanna hear AJFA or MoP again, instead of the stuff from the black
>album, but I just guess that might not be possible anymore. Well,
>two more weeks and we find out.
I would never make an informed decision strictly on the basis of hearsay. Like
you
said, 2 more weeks. Then, let the real criticism begin.
>so, in other words, if you haven't heard the new song yet (and some of you
have),
>you will be soon. i haven't heard it yet myself. i'm curious to hear it,
especially
>after seeing their new haircuts and james hetfield's 90210-esque sideburns.
yuck.
Yeah, Derek must be a terrible keyboardist too, with his short hair. James has
had
sideburns since after "Garage Days Re-revisited" in 1987. Let me reiterate:
Since
when does image mean more than music; style over substance?
I hope none of the quoted 'Jammers think I'm flaming them: I'm not. The
album's
not out yet, and it's narrow-minded to judge a whole album on the strength of
the
first single, IMO. I also wanted to show the opposing side's argument
(obviously,
I'm pro-Metallica). After enduring through all this garbage about Pantera
(IMO), I felt
it was necessary to post about Metallica.

Dream Theater appeared in the Island Ear before, but it was a really big

Hi Jammers!
Awhile back Mike Bahr posted a message for people to help him
gather some of the new Star Wars Figures. I'm in need of 3
SW figures: Lando Calrissian, Boba Fett (with the half circles
on the back on his hand) NOT the full circle (I have that one)
& Ben K. (with the full photo of him on the back on the package)
I Have the photo from his waist up. If anyone can find these
figures in the stores & doesn't mind picking them up for me
I would appreciate it.

this here's Colter again. I saw some things recently on the list that I thought
I could throw in my two cents on:
the Tori/DT connection - I've noticed that both acts attract similar types of
people. Musicians and otherwise musically-intellectual people are attracted to t
the lyrical and musical inventiveness, creativity, and originality of DT and
Tori. Also, I've noticed a preponderance of Goth fans for both, perhaps due to
the images and underlying pain present in the musics and lyrics. To me, both
have an abstract quality that I just can't put my finger on...maybe a
"harmonic aroma", as Frank Zappa might say. Oh yeah, I almost forgot - Geeks!
Both attract geeks, musical and not. I can say this because Tori once crowned
herself "Queen of the Geeks" or something to that effect. I know I and most of
my friends probably fall under the epithet - but then most people who seek the
musical inventiveness, creativity, and originality of DT and Tori are the type
of people who just don't fit in with the mainstream. We're not content to have
MTV or radio feed us our musical tastes.
on a related note - Hair! Somebody said something about Metallica cutting their
hair, and I thought to myself in my Emporer voice "now the circle is complete,
and your journey to the Dark Side...etc" Has anybody else kept up with the
recent haircuts? Steve Vai, Joe Satriani (bald!), George Lynch, Jason Bieler
(Saigon Kick), and several other members of various bands have recently shorn
their locks. What does it mean - everyone's going grunge? I don't think so -
any of you out there with long hair know that it's an incredible pain in the
ass!!! I remember Steve saying that it's very freeing to just get up in the
morning and go nad not worry about it. I think the artists descended from the
music formerly known as metal realize that the image that you HAD to have in
the 80's is no longer necessary, especially since those bands (with the
exception of Metallica) are so far out of the mainstream now that they don't
have to worry - the people who are still listening care more about the music.
Oh yeah, how could I forget Eddie Van Halen, who was probably the first to
show that cutting the hair was OK (Ed will always be the trailblazer).
Sorry this is so long, but these are hard times for the Rock. Maybe someday
KNAC will return to the airwaves and it will all be better. Hell, I live in
Arkansas and I still feel the pain. Carry On,

The question was raised recently why there is so much sudden discussion
of Metallica. I have a possible solution.
As I see it, there are four types of Dream Theater fans, and they can be
categorized generally into one of the following four groups. First,
there is the type of fan who got into DT because they're heavy - the
Balls and Chunkers. These fans generally cite Metallica, Anthrax,
Slayer, Pantera, etc. in their list of favorite bands. The second group
of fans was first attracted to DT because of their technical abilities.
These fans speak endlessly about Rush, Yes, Ryche, and others. The third
group is composed of fans who are a combination of the first two groups.
(I include myself here - big fan of Rush and Anthrax.) The fourth group
are people like one of my neighbors, who happened to hear "Silent Man" or
"Another Day" soemtime, fell in love with it, and eventually let her
neighbor play The Mirror/Lie after TSM. :) These people generally like
Mariah Carey and other such nonthreatening pop.
I hypothesize that at least half of us are members of that third group,
drawn to Dream Theater both for the riffs in PMU and The Mirror, and for
the instrumental fireworks in the middle of Metropolis. We like
Metallica and have been waiting somewhat anxiously to hear this new
stuff. In this downtime of Dream Theater news and events, this is about
as realted to DTC as a thread is likely to get. Factor in Metallica's
obvious influence on John P. and Mike, and I think we've got a serious
thread going here.
Of course, I could be totally off base with that.
On a not entirely, but almost completely, unrelated topic, I've reminded
myself of the HftH shows - particularly the cover medley. The thought
occured to me that John, John, and Mike could survive as a three piece.
Granted, I don't know who would sing, or if they would need vocals at
all, but could you imagine something like a mega-clinic featuring those
three? I grew up on mainly non-keys guitar rock - old VH, metal, et al.,
and watching those three jam seemed so pure to me. Maybe that's why I've
always enjoyed playing in trios. Aw, who knows. I think I'm dangerously
close to rambling at this point, so I'll wrap up by asking you all what
you think of that Four Types of Fans theory.
Thunderstorms rock! Second one of the year tonight!

Oh, that's too bad. You don't care about metallica! Many of us
want to know about their new cd, to decide whether to buy it or not. Since
so many people hate them, here is an excerpt for GAS:

Wow, tied with KING'S X! Wow, nobody likes em eh? I'm sure in a

for a while.

Well, I heard it this weekend and it was _quite_ restrained and straight
forward. Sad but true. (Sorry, had to do it.) The only thing I kept thinking
was that it could have been any band playing that song. And, to make matters
worse, I heard a review of the album by someone in England who attended a

Hey everyone,
Its been a LONG time since I have posted. I have been very busy with
school, supervising an Internet business, and parenting. I practically
have three lives squished into one stress ball!! :) :) ahhhahahahahahah!!!
Anyway, I just heard Metallica's new single last night and I have to
say that I like it A LOT! It fucking kicked ass! I mean it sounded heavy
and all, but it also sounded MATURE. They have definitely moved ahead in
their songwriting. In my own opinion, I think a Dream Theater fan would
enjoy this new Metallica MUCH more than their Lightning or Puppets days
(not to say that they weren't a kick-ass band back then either). Its
just that I hear all these jammers posting "its not like Metallica or its
not like the old Metallica or its sounds like selling out".
Well, In my honest opinion, if their new stuff sounded like the old Kill
'Em All stuff or even the Justice stuff, THAT would be selling out because
they started that shit years ago and about 10,000 bands followed their lead.
Now, EVRYONE in the metal scene sounds the same (a FEW exceptions,
though). That's probably one of the reasons why the "Banger's Ball" got
taken off because everyone became Metallica wanna-be's.
What I'm trying to say is that Metal needs a newm fresh start and thank
the Lord for Metallica because I feel like they're gonna revolutionize
metal AGAIN on JUNE 4th with "LOAD". As for these jammers who think
that it sounded "commercial" or "sold'out" or whatever, I say pay no
attention to them, because these guys seem like the kinda numb-nuts who
fucking mosh at Dream Theater shows and get in the way of my view of John
Petrucci! :) :) :)
