    Hiyis

Just a few quick thoughts I'd like to share with you, and maybe a few questions...

    1. Dream Theater, *please* tour Australia (specifically Brisbane)!!! 2. Rush, *please* tour Australia (specifically Brisbane)!!! 3. Queensryche, *please* tour Australia (specifically Brisbane)!!! 4. Iron Maiden, *please* tour Australia again (specifically Brisbane)!!!

I'm thinking of getting a Yes album. Which should I start off with?

I have now been a Pink Floyd fan for 3 days...

Can anyone tell me who wrote the lyrics for the songs on 'Rage for Order' by Queensryche? I can't find the credits anywhere...

And who wrote the lyrics for the Fly By Night and Caress of Steel albums? Just Neil? 'I Think I'm Going Bald' doesn't sound quite like a Neil Peart song (not really up there with the 2112's and the like), but I may be mistaken...

    That's all for now...

    Nigel

MAN, RUSH KICKED ASS THE OTHER NIGHT!!!!!!! I tell you, that friggin' drum solo and 2112 made it worth the ticket price. The rest was REALLY good, too. The seats were mighty good, too. All in all, on killer of a show. If you dig Rush, go see the show. If you think TfE is okay, go see the show, the new stuff is REAL good live. Later all.

it is a beautiful thing when DT is so highly praised as talent that they are played at a B-ball game. i can't imagine a better song for something like that. secondly, i keep hearing about Ytsejam t-shit\rts - hey, get me one! where can i find one of these gems? and last, i thought i was the only one who liked 80's rock, and i am not kidding. i remember being like 7 or 8, and songs like "oh sherry" and the like were so beautiful to me, and everyone else my age was into MC hammer, paula abdul, and shit like that. it seems i am not alone. how cool is that? steve perry has such a beautiful voice. i think i need to go buy a few new discs. -lunitaria PS-how is the new yes album????? _________________________________ "i had to hear your wonderous stories..."- YES

    Hi there!

I just recovered from the 128 jams I found in my m-box when I returned from a while (only a month) off the net. Without further talk, here's a transcription (just slightly edited) of an interview I did with Neil Peart a while ago (around the release of TFE). Part of it is published here in Sweden in the magazine STEREO and the complete thing will be published on http://www.slitz.se/stereo next week. It's copyrighted, but I thought I could share it all with you. The subjects vary a lot for different reasons.

    -------------------------------------------------------

What's the main advantage of being in a trio?

    - The freedom to play a larger role, because as a drummer I do like to be busy, mentally and physically. I like to be busy all the time and never be bored, and never have to just keep time. I always like to be challenged by coming up with new things, and challenge myself to make a part interesting or different, keeping dynamics and textural changes going through the song. These are all the things I enjoy doing because I wouldn't want to be just a time-keeping drummer, although I can appreciate someone else playing a simple, beautiful style. But for me I'm more restless, I need more action. So that's what I like, to have all the freedom that I want.

You have expanded a lot on the format.

    - Sure, we've tried everything and those are the things that trigger us to get deeper into other sounds. We used the keyboards, other kinds of guitars and percussion instruments, to keep the sound growing. Because there were times when we were feeling a little bit up against the wall sonically, we wanted to have more texture and richness, so we actually have talked a few times over the years about adding a fourth member, but in every case we went back on ourselves and just said: ok, we will put more into it rather than getting someone else. The nice thing of course being a three-piece is that we have fewer arguments, which is important.

How do you manage to do it all by yourselves?

    - That's the big challenge, and a lot of work with that is in getting all the technology to work. We like to trigger it all manually so we don't have tapes or sequencers just running that we play to. We actually play all those parts, Geddy and Alex plays the foot-pedals, I'll trigger a keyboard with my drum pad. We're actually playing all of the things that happen live in a direct way, its all triggered manually or pedally. So throghout the course of a show there's quite a lot of work, but at the same time in the same way that I described my drumming being active to keep me interested, it means that none of us is never just floating, none of us is ever having an easy ride during a show. There's so much work to reproduce that stuff live, it makes the challenge greater and consequently it makes it more interesting.

How do you challenge yourselves evolving as you do from album to album?

    - I made a major change this year, since we had enough time off. I went to work with a drum teacher by the name of Fred Gruber and completely rebuild my whole style of playing. I went back to traditional grip, changed the drums I play, the way I set them up, the end of the sticks that I use, the heads that I use, the way I move my hands and feet, everything. I spent a year and a half practising every single day, to build this new style so I would have something fresh, actually so I would have a lot of fresh things, to contribute to our music on this record. I played on this record in a completely new way, after 30 years.

This must come as a shock to most musicians who are familiar with your work.

    - It just proves that it's never over. Even after 30 years you should still be getting better, and when I felt myself getting a little bit stiff - I didn't like the direction my playing was going, it was getting more precise but more rigid, more stiff - so I just had to take steps to change that. So I decided to just start all over. It seemed like the right thing to do and it became a beautiful challenge that took me into a lot of ares of drumming that I hadn't explored before, or took me into familiar areas in a different way. So it definitely paid off, it was a chance I had to take.

Did the experiences with big bands in doing the Buddy Rich thing get you to do this?

    - It was more of an education and being exposed to a whole other style of music in a very deep way, and dealing with all these other drummers and seeing how they did it. It opened my eyes to new things, but everything that I went through was apart from that. I happened to meet my teacher through the process of doing that but the course of study that I did didnt have anything directly to do with big band music. It was more the restlessness, the thing that drove me to do the Buddy Rich-thing, that made me start all over, work with a teacher and rebuild it all from the beginning.

There's been some hassle about a new tribute album that's coming out, can you tell me anything about that?

    - No. It's not a tribute album at all, and I don't care about it, I don't wanna fight it, I don't wanna help it. These people just keep putting out these cover albums, and the only reason they do it is to make money. Tribute albums have completely changed in the last couple of years to where they aren't tributes anymore, they're just people cashing in on other peoples work. And they're just a bunch of bar-bands doing it, it's not like they're musicians paying tribute to Rush in any way.

Will you now do the fourth live album on this tour?

    - Yes, in fact we recorded most of last tour and we certainly want to be recording this time too. We managed to collect some really good stuff of improvisational versions of songs, last tour particularly we started opening up our arrangements to allow for more of that. And we'll continue to do that on this tour, so we should have live versions that are well worth capturing.

    Will you tour europe?

    - There's only one of me and there are only 365 days of the year. It's just impossible to do everything everybody wants us to. We do what we can. I think it's just gonna be a fairly minimal tour of the States and Canada, so that's all.

What's this "brought to you by the letter..." about this time around?

    - That's just a little joke we put in. It comes from the childrens show Sesame Street, and at the end of that they always put "brought to you..." so we started doing it on Power Windows, since four of the songs started with the letter m, and then we just kept doing it. We used R-R-R-R this time, because we were walking around the studio talking in scottish all day, so we put the rolling r:s in there as a tribute to our little scottish entertainment. Just a joke.

I've read about your bicycle trips, what can you tell me about those?

    - I've traveled quite a bit by bicycle throgh the years. All over China, West Africa, around Central Europe quite a lot, over the Rocky Mountains here, the Pyrenees and the Alps a couple of times. Its just a great way to get away from everything, all you have to worry about is turning the pedals. It reduces life to a really simple equation, especially traveling in West Africa, all you worry about is keep moving and finding water. And for most of us in life we never have to worry about finding water, so I find it refreshing to have my life brought down to that basic level where I'm worrying about finding some rice to eat and finding some water to drink. It's a really healthy set of values to get in touch with, I think more people could do it, getting in touch with real life and how hard it can be sometimes.

Can you tell me of some things that have happened on these trips?

    - I have a book coming out next month in Canada that tells all about my trip through Kamerun. It tells of some of the magic that West Africa has and some of the terrible things that can happen, soldiers pointing guns at you, nasty parts of that life. But the good sides always weigh up, the people are so wonderful in the countryside and the scenery of course is spectacular. It's well worth doing, but there's a lot of hardship, there's disease, bad food, bad water, all of the things that traveling demands. But it's a price you have to pay, doing a little suffering and having a little fear and sickness to get these experiences. Its not bad for you.

Well, we haven't had enough mindless blather lately. This somehow disturbs me. Not enough people have threatened to leave the jam in the past few days. This also disturbs me. I wish the jam would get unpopular again, like it used to be. I liked it better when I had it all to myself. I could get a front-row seat with no poseurs in my way...wait a minute. This is not being done for my benefit? As the immortal, or perhaps quite mortal, Eric AK once sang, "This is Reality." Hmm, what really bothers me is when someone sends an off topic message to the jam and then defends it by implying intended humor. BLOW ME! COCKSUCKERS! Whew. I feel better now. Did you ever wonder why people get so hot about receiving an unsolicited jam? Like the delete button is merely a whim of some programmer somewhere. Anyway, on to your regularly scheduled lives...

Hrm. I'd hate to think of Metropolis though as that song every High School uses to open a game. Queen wrote enough of those. :) It's pretty kewl though, cuz that's a nifty introduction song. It shoulda been at the first of I&W.

Well, I don't consider it nostalgia to listen to 80's stuff. 70's stuff maybe. I hated 70's music anyway. I'm one of the biggest 80's freaks on the jam, I'll wager. I can throw in the soundtrack to "St Elmo's Fire" in the cassette player anyday and proceed down the road with a good buzz. Gratuitous bands of the 80's: Journey, Asia, REO Speedwagon, Foreigner, Twisted Sister, Iron Maiden, Bon Jovi, Weird Al Yankovich (Woo! Woo!), etc., etc., etc...

Good music will always be good music. I listen to Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, and Chopin every once in a while. Good music never dies, but hypocritical people who say it does will. :)

hey Jammers, someone asked who the top 8 were in Bass Player's Readers Pole. i was gonna refer everyone to www.bassplayer.com but it seems they're stuck on last month's (really this month's) issue.

    1. Flea 2. Steve Bailey 3. Tony Levin 4. Alain Caron 5. John Patitucci 6. Dave LaRue 7. John Entwistle 8. Paul McCartney 9. John Myung 10. Mike Gordon 10. Me'Shell NdegeOcello 10. Jason Newsted

John was #7 last year, and i'll take part of the blame for this year's low showing cuz i didn't hound everyone to vote (skool n stuff *coughjanestarcough* ;) but still, #9 isn't bad for not having released anything recently. anyway, CONGRATS JOHN! :)
