well i just picked up the trans-siberian orchestra, i'm listening to it now
for the first time... this one incredible disc, jon oliva never ceases to
amaze me. its a very lush and orchestrated christmas cd, which goes to
support the name well. even if you dont technically celebrate christmas, if
you're a savatage fan you'll still want to hear this..
another cd, which was released last year, is gary hoey's ho ho hoey.. in
relation to TSO this is quite less of an emotionally powerful cd, but its
simply a fun guitar driven disc of well known christmas tunes. hoey did
everything himself, no other musicians were used nor harmed in the recording
of this disc :)
to all that pick these up, enjoy
~Rip

Rush was on today at 7:30. Yup, that's right you missed it, right along with

I agree with you 100%, Chris! I've been playing for 4 years,
now. Not a long time by most standards, never taken any courses. I
taught myself out of Metallica and Nirvana tablature books, and have
cracked a theory book maybe three times. This stuff has no meaning
to me, and I don't see how it will help me write anything, or play
anything any better. It will only help me do it faster, maybe, and
give me a nifty tool to impress any Berklee student by versing the
words "Lydian Dominant Scale," or "That was a really nice Eb maj+b13
you used in measure 125." Frankly, it serves no purpose but to give
the "gifted" players a stick up theiir butt to make me think that
they know something that I don't and that I must learn or I will
never be as cool as they are.

So he (and his colleagues) dump on Rush and praise music that is easier for them to understand. (They also scream at the idea that rock music should progress instead of wallowing in the primitivism of punk and old-fashioned hippie folk-rock.)

My feeling >is that, because of it's scope, it's always been a different sort of song, >lyrically, than anything else in the DT cannon. There's an obvious reason >for that, of course... "Learning to Live" might be my favorite Dream Theater song. It's a masterpiece. Music is more difficult to discuss aesthetically than writing, but I think that the music is more uplifting (as well as complex) than any of their songs I can think of now (with the possible exceptions of "Another Day" and surrounded). Lyrically, it is extremely powerful, romantic and upbeat (even if there's an element of sadness), which is another reason why I think it's one of their best. John Myung might be my favorite lyricist in the band ("Lifting Shadows Off a Dream" is pretty good as well). Now regarding "the analytical, objective look at the world" and "the dynamism needed to attack the problems in the world on an ongoing basis:" I disagree that those two things are necessarily in conflict. One can be objective and still be passionate. I might be misunderstanding "dynamism" here, but if you mean what I think you mean, they can (and do) co-exist. If you've read _The Fountainhead_ and _Atlas Shrugged_, you should know what I'm talking about.
>I just was kicking it around as I was watching the >Joyce vs. Rand discussion...thinking that this is actually a good >demographic for precisely that discussion. You mean the list is a good demographic for that discussion? I don't know about that. They're probably skipping right over all of this and cursing us off for taking up so much bandwidth. Did you mean something else by demographic? In the slim chance that anyone cares what I think and isn't tired of what I have to say, I can explain how I think Dream Theater relates to Ayn Rand's aesthetic theories to anyone who e-mails me privately. And I have now corrected this week's quote in my signature file; it had an error before which I just noticed.

"The issue of freedom vs. statism--or individual rights vs. government controls, or capitalism vs. socialism--_is_ the basic issue of political philosophy. It is _the_ root, _the_ start, _the_ fundamental which is involved in every specific measure, by which all else is determined, by the side of which all other considerations are trivia. It is the basic--and, today, the only--issue by which a candidate must be judged: freedom vs. statism." Ayn Rand, _The Objectivist Newsletter_

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** new since last update * new in last two updates ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
** Two shipments went out this week, one on Wednesday, one on Thursday. The ** Thursday shipment was to correct an order that I put an unnecessary hold ** on. In all, there were 10 orders filled this week.
** I finally heard back from the order that was misdirected from the first ** shipment. The shirt has now arrived, and so far every order that should ** be accounted for by now has been.
* The XXL shirts are now sold out, and the XXXL shirts have been sold out * since last week. There are still three Medium shirts, 19 Large, and 92 * XL remaining.
* I did manage to make the money to make the final payment in time for the * shirts. From this point on, the shirts will be going towards paying back * my loan for the downpayment. Thanks again to everyone who has ordered, * and all of you who plan to.
The Ytsejam shirt page has been updated once again. It has a direct scan of the front and backs of the shirts, so you can see what they *really* look like, and not just what they are *supposed* to look like. Check it out at:
http://www.cclabs.missouri.edu/~c675311/ytsejam/
I would just like to take this chance to thank everyone who has been so supportive of the shirts... It's nice to know that my work on this project is appriciated.
Well, the sales at YtseCon III went fairly well, thank you to everyone who bought a shirt. I've sold something like 70 shirts in all, which is a good start. I'm hoping that orders will pick up again soon, now that the Con has come and gone and things have calmed down a bit.
I have the shirts in my possession now, they are sitting in three big boxes that take up too much space in my tiny dorm room. :) They all came out exceptionally well, better than I expected, in fact. Process jobs (printing color graphics one color at a time) are notorious for severely distorting the graphic, but in this case, it came out very true to the original.
The shirts were premiered at YtseCon III in New York, and everyone I talked to seems very happy with them.
I have added another section to the WWW page for the shirts. It's a compilation of all the comments I have recieved, or that have been posted to the jam. You can check this out and see how opinions are running.
I opened a checking account in Columbia to better handle the orders I'm recieving and also get them out without incident or delay. So far things are working well.
======= Details =======
The Ytsejam shirts are two sided prints. The front of the shirt features a *full color* raytraced graphic from Chris Hailey in Washington. The graphic is a beautifully done scene with the Majesty logo floating behind a group of marble columns on a tile floor with a wide view of space visible behind.
The back of the shirt is in a solid light blue color. The majority of the design is a huge Majesty logo, framed by the Dream Theater title at the top, the mailing list address on the sides and "Ytsejam" at the bottom. Below that is "Internet Mailing List" between two more Majesty logos.
The current lot of shirts is 217 (they printed up more than I asked for, but I'm not complaining). If those run out, and demand is high enough, I may run another with a slightly different design.
You can check out all of the details, as well as a preview of the shirts at: http://www.cclabs.missouri.edu/~c675311/ytsejam/
Please note: Due to some legal issues, the University will no longer allow me to keep this commercial advertisement on their server. To sidestep this issue, Chris Merlo was kind enough to put the page up on his account. Please go to the URL above and follow the link to the new site.
======= Pricing =======
The cost of the shirts is $16 each. The shirt is damn close to concert quality, so $16 is a steal (last Dream Theater concert I was at charged $23 for a shirt!). If you require a size larger than XL, please let me know ASAP so I can get those orders in. There is an additional $1 charge for each size increase (ie. XXL = $17). If you are picking the shirt up from me directly the $16 price stands. If you can't get the shirt in person, you can order one through the mail for $20 to cover shipping.
I spoke with the people at the post office and I've decided to set the shipping prices outside the USA at $9, for a total of $25. I realize this is damn expensive for a tshirt, and I'm sorry. If individual prices are signifigantly less expensive, I will gladly return a check for the balance.
The rundown: M, L or XL shirt, picked up: $16 M, L or XL shirt, mailed in the US: $20 M, L or XL shirt, mailed outside the US: $25 XXL add $1 XXXL add $2
============ Availability ============
Size: Sold: Reserved: Remaining: Total: ----- ----- --------- ---------- ------ M 2 0 3 5 L 20 0 19 39 XL 55 0 92 147 XXL 22 0 0 22 XXXL 4 0 0 4 ------ ----- --------- ---------- ------ Totals 103 0 114 217
======== Ordering ========
The shirts are open to mail ordering now. Mail orders will be shipped out every Wednesday via Priority Mail for US orders, and airmail for all others. Checks and money orders will be cashed before the order goes out, most likely on Monday. So far, mail orders have gone well, the only problem I have had has been with the bank, not the post office, so don't worry about your orders. All US orders are insured for the amount paid for the shirts and shipping, and insurance on airmail depends on the country and other aspects.
To order, send a check or money order for the proper US dollar amount (see pricing above) to:
Pat Griffin 537A Hudson Hall 1202 E. Rollins St. Columbia, MO 65201
Make them payable to Pat Griffin, and remember this in US dollars.
Be sure to include: Your name. Email address. Mailing address. Phone number. Quantity of shirts you want to order. The size of each. Whether this order is for pickup for mail order.
I will keep you up to date on the status of the shirts through email.

This is directed towards all of our Swedish YtseJammers out there. Do any of you read the magazine HiFi & Musik? And if so, have any of you run across the issue 1/2 Februari 1994 with Frank Zappa "Zappas basta!" on the cover?
If any of you have, let me know. There's a funny little thing about that issue.
DTC: I notice on Mike Portnoy's Rising Power album (for those of you who don't know, it's a band he was in when he was 16), there appears to be a photo of Mike's mug-shot. Anyone know if he was arrested on July 6, 1984? Or maybe the photo is phoney?
Several weeks ago, someone (I forget who) posted their interpretation of A Mind Beside Itself as being about someone suffering from schitzophrenia. I'm surprised no one ever commented on this post (unless I just missed it). I thought that interpretation was very well thought out and applicable. So whoever was responsible for that post, bravo to you!
Enough of my babble.

Ok, guys (or gals)
We're all wanting DT content, right? The only problem is, there isn't any. :P Not any of our faults, just nothin happenin'.
OK, about a year and a half ago. (Mebbe around jam 1000 or so, I don't recall), my friend asked me to print out any DT info, good or bad, that came offa the jam. To tell you the truth, even back then there were days and even weeks that nothing was ever printed. He kinda threw it together into what he so "majestically" calls, "The Book of Knowledge." It has an ancient FAQ in it, and stuff. But it also has old threads that were pulled from ancient history. I'm gonna flip through this thing, cuz there's some really cool, (and funny) stuff in there. There's even some of those Metal Edge Questionairre thingies where they ask DT, "If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you bring with you?" Mebbe I'll post some of the to cut the boredom. Remember the old What crap's represented on the album cover threads? heheh Since when is it illegal to bring up stuff like that any more? Everyone's griping about lack of DT content and that we're not having fun anymore, but when someone starts something fun and new, someone always cuts it down. Like the "visual music" thread. That was fun, gave us something to do, and took up no more bandwidth than these damn, "I've got my tix for Birch Creek, Poopstain, NY! who else is going?!?!" posts. So if someone starts a new DT related trend, and it's only entertaining if not informational, don't gripe and skip it if you don't like it.
For all you newbies. I remember on my 3rd or so post a year ago, I asked everyone to name their dream band. In other words, list the people you thought could make the best band, EVER. Even back then, when info was minimal, people griped enuff to where posts like that were banned, even though it cut the boredom and was fun. It gave everyone an idea of what the other people on the jam were like, in respect to their musical admirations, which I, for one, always thought was the 2nd biggest part of this jam: meeting the people on it.
Oh, well, we may never be the influential force that brought about the A Change of Seasons EP ever again, unless this dissention in the ranks is brought back together again. I betcha I get a flame for this, just to prove what I'm talking about. :) It seems like we're all at each other's throats anymore.

you should check out ancient. their new one, "the cainian chronicle", is really good. their earlier stuff, while much harder to find, is much better, though... using things like euphonium... too bad they don't do that anymore! ancient incorporates a lot of quieter stuff also, similar to the really orchestral, atmospheric sections in some of emperor's songs.
a lot of black metal also incorporates female vocals, quite often with beautiful soprano voices. it makes for a much more effective atmosphere.
actually, you should check out some of the black metal online mail-order sites. there's a lot of cool stuff out there that you can't find here in the states. if you like emperor and bathory, you should definitely look around a bit.

Well, it's about time. Either way... what songs are ya looking for? Anything specific? Let me know.. Ok, for those going to the Poughkeepsie show. Would everyone be interested in meeting before the show around 5 o'clock behind in the parking lot behind the Chance and grabbing some food before the show? If interested, either e-mail me or DreamNDay (DreamNDay@dreamt.org).
