Subject: Several Odd Musings
Being new, please forgive if any of these are retreads.
I ordered my tickets to the Birch Hill show. I purchased an extra just in case
someone is in need. I will be staying in Parsippany (my old stomping
grounds). I am renting a car and can provide rides for some folks in the North
Jersey area.
I regularly search the stores for DT stuff. I see alot of stuff on the shelves
that I already have. If anyone needs these items, let me know and I can pick
them up for you

All these posts about 80's metal started me reminiscing about my guitar heros
from the 80's. Not including the obvious, like EVH, here are a few:
Akira Takasaki - Loudness
Warren DeMartini - Ratt
Adrian Vandenberg - Vandenberg
Randy Rhoads - Ozzy
Steve Vai was in a band called Alcatrazz. He played on the album Disturbing
the Peace in '85. Graham Bonnett who sang on Since Your Were Gone by Rainbow
and with MSG was on vocals. The music is not bad and the guitar is great. If
you can find this in a bargain bin, I recommend it.
I have a few records from a band called Diamond Head. The best is Borrowed
Time from '82. I would definitely call this Prog-Metal. Longish songs and
many time changes. Mettalica covered the song Am I Evil from this album.
Another recommendation if you can find it.
I picked up FW Parallels. I like it so far. I seem to remember a song called
Through Other Eyes or something that I saw on MTV. What record is that from?
Is it good also? I was reading the liner notes and notices DT spelled Dream
Theatre! Sort of ironic!
I have Savatage's HOTMK and GB. I bought them to hear Criss Oliva. How does
the new stuff compare to this style?
If MP has 3 arms, does that mean he is 3 times better than Rick Allen from Def
Leppard?

no offence or anything, but Johnson is not even in the same league
as Satch, so I feel that a comparison is unfair to both.
Furthermore, I seriously doubt,
even considering my limited theoretical knowledge,
that Joe's repetoire is as limited as you imply.
And even if it were, my admiration for the man would only increase,
because all of his solos sound fresh and unique to my ears.
(if he could do all that with a limited pallette,
just think what he might do with a few lessons!)
and lastly, I find Satch to be vastly superior in innovation,
taste, and skill to Vai. (although Vai is admittedly quite good.)
Seeing them at G3 recently reinforced these opinions.
> "pseudo-jizz-jazz" you're referring to is called putting melody into solos

generally, I would agree that Johnson's compositions are very fine --
I would even go so far as to say that he are the most mature of the three,
in that respect, with Satch close behind and Vai in a distant third.
(Vai is too much fun.)(shut up, we know you can play! jeez!)
however, I would say that it is Satch who takes the proverbial cake
when it come to pure guitar playing.
This opinion was formed watching the final jam at the G3 concert.
Vai would come in on these blues songs and play his typical shred solos,
sounding typically of Vai and nothing of the blues.
then Johnson would come on and play incredible runs --
but almost no melody whatsoever.
And Joe would play the blues. (yes, probably in a minor pentatonic.)
the morel of this forest is:
if you are a jazz player, as I feel Johnson truly is at heart,
don't try to cater to what you think a shred audience wants.
the next time I see him, it will be only if he headlines,
so he can do what he wants, in his own setting.
but Satch still does, and always will, rule.
even if he looks like an alien from a distance. =)

Vince and company... I have to make this clear... Mike Portnoy
doesn't purchase any of my bootlegs, and I imagine he might get in
trouble with management if he did. I clear up this problem conveniently
and efficiently by providing complimentary copies in abundance, or as
requested. One of my policies since day one in this "business" has been
that I will never screw around with the performers... and I will stop if
ever asked to by the bands or management. Not that I'm going around asking
if they want me to, or anything... (smile)... but if they do happen across
the material and it doesn't exactly put a smile on their faces, I'm more
than happy to cease and desist. Just to be clear on all that... I don't
want anyone to think "good Lord, that Mike Bahr is one greedy sonuvabitch,
charging bands money just to hear their own damn stuff!!!" :)

I downloaded those 2 DT ra samples. They are pretty much worthless. I'm
not flaming anybody, but I just thought I'd let everyone know that if you
can't download them you're not missing anything. All you can hear at all
is the drums, and even those are somewhat fuzzy. If you still want to hear
the samples, go to realaudio.com and download 3.0 or else it won't work.
Hey Skadz are you ever going to fix dreamt.org? Just wondering. That
comment about getting a day off and regular updates coming soon have been
there for years. I guess they weren't coming that soon:) Once again not a
flame.
Lots of the majesty demos sound a lot like Fates Warning. I don't think
it's just cause of the singer either. Anybody else think so?

Well, you brought in dahmer, I couldn't resist. Wasn't trying to be nasty,
which is why I ended my message with a smiley.
I just have a fundamental problem with the premise that something being
illegal makes it wrong. There are lots of things that are wrong but legal,
and lots of things that are illegal but not wrong. A lot of laws just
happen to be wrong.

Hi all,
First off, this post has minimal DT content. I just posted it
because I figure there are many musicians on here that use computers
regularly, right?
Anyway--my point. I am looking for a PC program that I could use to
record my guitar and some other things on. I don't mean some little crappy
one like Wave Studio. I mean something that basically turns the PC into a 8
or 16 track mixer/recorder. If anyone out there knows of one that would be
of use to me, please let me know. Thank you.
Oh yeah, does anyone have a decent copy of Raise the Knife? I'd
love to get my hands on this one somehow. Thanks again.
Peace be with you and God bless.

Hi!
I just came in to give you a short review of what I saw
last night.
Vanden Plas and Angra played in Strasbourg and it was INCREDIBLE!!!
Vanden Plas did a really good job. They played songs from their
album Color Temple and their playing was real tight. One hour
of good music.
And then... Angra. I'm still amazed because of the things I
saw there. They are awsome musicians and they can do so much
more than this Helloween kind of stuff they also play sometimes.
I saw their full set first time (2 hours) because on our tour
with them theiy only played 1 hour. There even were some
brasilian touched songs with much percussions in them and so
on. Another great thing was the short guitar solo of Kiko.
It's unbelievable what this man can do with his guitar!
All I can say is... it was awsome!!
If you ever have the chance to see them live, go there!
Thanks.
Bye.
Bernd.

hey everyone,
I'm new around here. Just thought you all should know that. Where would I
go about getting everything DT ever did? I have the mandatory four CD's,
and some of the German and foreign dics, but I want all those demos and -
dare I say - bootlegs. And does anyone know when DT will be touring the
northwest? Anywhere in the NW would be great, I'll fly or drive to the next
state if I have to. I missed them in Portland both times they went through
there, I was in another state, as if that's any good reason to miss the best
band in the universe. Any news would be good news.

Um...I think it's "Mandatory 5" bud. You probably need to get Live
at the Marquee. There's also a video "Live in Tokyo". You can usually find
these in most common CD stores, hopefully.

No dates yet for the NW. There's a few concerts in the New England
area in Dec. but that's all the news for now.

Hello again! I was just skimming over YJ2008 and saw that Jenn posted
about looking up psychological disorders which coincide with DT songs.
Well, I've been taking Intro Psych this semester and we were discussing
dreaming and its different level. The first level, if I remember right,
dealt with Images and Words that you have experienced throughout the day
and how they resurface in dreams. The second thing my professor mentioned
was that the dream you remember when you wake up is the manifested dream
which he nicknamed the Awake dream. It caught me off guard when I heard
it. One of the guys must have a psychology background. Does anyone know
who it may be? See ya.
