I like to refer to WDATU as WDAJU as in when dream and james unite.

The more I think about it, the funnier the GC version of TTT of LiT is.

I'm currently listening to TSO. I would definately recommend it. It's a
big more mellow than I might like, but the HM christmas carols make up for
    it.

Any S. Florida jammers going to the RUSH show at the Coral Sky
Amphitheater in West Palm on Dec 8th? Plus, I just found out last weekend
that Eric Johnson is playing a place called the Carefree Theater also in West
Plam on Dec 1st. With G3 apparently not getting down this far south, I'll
take what I can get. Tickets are still available I believe and I'm happy with
my center section 11th row seat for old EJ. Hope some jammers make it to
either one of these shows. Take care folks.

    HI!

Okay, maybe I'll say more heh. Okay, the real reason I'm writing to the
list this time is because I just wanted to say that I was very impressed
with the IRC thing for this list. Two nights ago I logged in for the first
time ever on there and was greeted by almost everybody there! Thanks! I
was pleasantly surprised to see that some ppl had recognized me from various
posts to this here list and that ppl so cool to me. 8) Also, I logged in
tonight (tuesday night), and had a great time givin a little trivia test to
(forgive me if I can't remember everyone!) Rip, Kevin, william, DreamNDay,
and some others that I can't think of right now. Anyways, thanks and you'll
be seeing more of this Atlanta boy hangin our more often there...see ya!

p.s. ppl here should go hang out also at the Megadiner, where Megadeth's
fan go to chat (well it's been a place for non metalheads too oh well).

Second on the playlist was Steve "In Your Face" Vai.

One word: outrageous. Nevermind the obvious auditory aspects of his
persona, this guy had MOOVES. And he never repeated any of them, not once.
Moove after moove after moove. What a clown. He should release a videotape
detailing his on-stage antics. Playing between his legs, playing with his
mouth (teeth? tongue? who could tell?), simultaneously putting his left
index finger over his lips (shhhh) while cutting off the volume with his
right hand on the volume knob, visualizing a slowly-falling harmonic by
maneuvering his guitar through the air like a plummeting airplane, etc.

He also did a series of grandiose, almost ballet-like poses while holding
chords on the guitar, poses in which he would lift the guitar away from
his body like a sword, like a samurai posing for photographs. I wonder how
many mirrors he has in his studio when he practices.

What really struck me about his style was his freedom of movement while
playing. It was as if he would only put his hands on the guitar when he
had to. He was so loose and free, he was a pleasure to watch. Hands down,
he muted better than any guitarist I've ever seen, and by that I don't
mean playing muted notes. I mean he would get the exact sound he wanted to
get out of one note and completely silence the other five strings. Or if
he had to ring certain notes found on the G and high E strings he would do
so with ONLY his left hand with no help from his right, and the B was
nowhere to be heard. That volume knob might as well have been be attached
to his right pinky, he could cut the licks off instantaneously. All this
mastery while dancing around like a rabid slinky.

"Yeah, we gotta boy by the name'a Jack Butler. Cuts heads every Saturday
night. Jack Butler gone' LIKE you..."
--sample from "Crossroads" ominously blared before "Bad Horsie"

When people posted here saying Mike Keneally did "harmony and keyboard,"
what they forgot to mention was that he did harmony to VAI'S GUITAR. All
those doubled runs on the albums were performed live by Vai and Keneally.
Keneally also did a bit of drumming, a bit of keyboarding, a bit of
singing, and a bit of jumping around with a jester's cap on. The bassist
was a 200+ pound monster who reminded me of the Predator. He played not
only a bass but a bizarre headless bass/keyboard hybrid that looked as if
some demented wizard had cursed the two instruments and fused them
together. The drummer, Mike Mangini, simply rocked. Too bad I'll never get
to hear him play Extreme's material.

Someone I spoke to at the show thought Vai "relied too heavily on the
whammy bar," which makes little sense to me because the whammy bar is
attached to Vai's guitar. It's a permanent fixture. Why this person didn't
also say, "Legg relied too heavily on the second string" or "Mike Mangini
relied to heavily on the snare drum" is beyond me. I wondered why Eric
Johnson even HAD a bar on his tremolo since he didn't use it once the
    whole night. Speaking of Eric....

..but I gotta put in my two cents on this one.

            ENOUGH RIPPING ON SATRIANI!!

I'm sick to death of all these people saying bad things about
Satch's playing. Ten to one you guys can't even come close to what he's doing.
And about comparing him to EJ, or Vai, please! This is what they
did the G3 tour about! They did the tour to show that there is no
competition between the three guys. They all love and respect each other's
music. To say that one is better than another is ludicrous IMHO. There is
a point at which a guitarist becomes ELITE. All these three have that
status; rightfully so. They kick ass, all three of them. Now that's
something that really can't be argued. They're good. Real good.

            'nuff said.

Peace be with you and God bless.

Not a flame, but this is totally a silly thing to say. Each of these
players has his own style... fuck! These three players are responsible for
starting THOUSANDS of guitarists, and are three of the most copied players
in the world. I would NEVER dare to say Satch is mostly Pentatonic in
comparison with EJ. I mean... I've done a lot of EJ licks (from his videos)
and they're almost ALL pentatonic... whereas Satch plays mostly in lydian.
Eric doesn't do much tapping, no, but to say that the fact that Satch and
Vai DO tap puts them behind is also sorta... weird. Eric excels in
alternate picking. Satch excels in legato, groove and melody... Vai does all
of this and more... but they are at the core equals. They can all do lots
    of things the others can't.

I'm told Rush is paid for WM royalties. As far as bars go.... that's news
to me. I hope you're not implying that bars pay a certain amount for each
    cover that's played there.

    Finally:

I need help. Someone or ones who know these bootlegs, PLEASE e mail me and

Comedy Live in Long Island Lords of Sound
    Majestic Harmonies Mind Control
    Wake Up 1.

I would like to know what tracks they have on them and the quality of the

    >agree

Personally I am for taping of shows. If a band feels that they are good
enough to have people come out and hear them play, pay them to play, then
the band should present a quality performance. If a band is worried
about someone picking up their "screw-ups" on tape, then they should
practice more, then the tapes will be good performances. They really
can't do much about the sound quality of the live recording, if they have
a good soundman then you have to hope that the punk knows how to work the
recorder. <grin> When I used to play symphonic and jazz tons of people
were recording us on video. (mostly family members) The screw-ups were
captured as well as the magic moments. As for people making money off of
fans, any fan with half a brain is going to listen to a live performance
before purchasing anything. I'm not going to buy anything which sounds
crappy, and if it is on CD and I can get a tape copy, lots of times I'll
just dub the live (illegitimate) CD. This way the bootleggers don't make
any more money off of the fan.

Just my opinion on the matter while revisiting an old topic.

    Later,

    Mike

Cacophony is the best shred metal band that ever existed. They consisted of
Marty Friedman and Jason Becker on guitars (FUKKIN' BEYOND anything anyone
else has done in shred IMO) Atma Anur and Deen Castronovo on drums for
albums 1 and 2 respectively. The band was destroyed mainly because the guys
wanted to be seen more... without being front men. In Cacophony the singer
tended to suck so hard he would get mocked when he'd cme on stage... and
then the crowd would go wild when he left for an instrumental.

As for Altitudes, I don't belive a tab exists (but if it does, PLEASE let me
know) though Air's tab does. I've learned bits and pieces of Becker tunes,
though I've never had the time to master one all the way through. He's my
favorite guitarist.... he did things JP probably can't do.... when he was 17
years old! (not a knock at JP... he's probably my favorite guitarist that's
    still playing today.)

    Hello Jammers,

Mark Metzger brought up the "fan club CD" idea for Dream Theater, to sort of emulate what Fish has been doing. I brought up this idea about 2 years ago and spoke to some people about it. The band needs to have approval from the record label to do something like this and at this time Dream Theater doesn't have that clause in their record contract. Like I said, this was two years ago, things might have changed. I would think that if the band is cool with it overall and they sell well on the new album, Mr Portnoy might put to have that clause in the band's new contract. Have a fan club record label similar to Marillion's Racket Records established for Dream Theater. Ytsejam Records or something of that nature. Mike Portnoy or anyone else out there with some influence (evoking the muse <grin>) you might want to work on something like this. If I run into Mike outside another concert I'll bring this up.

BTW Fish is releasing a new album in early 1997, Nick Barrett from Porcupine Tree is producing and playing on the album, it should be some incredible prog, those of you that have heard Porcupine Tree should see the possibilities. Nick wants to return Fish to his theatrical and artistic roots.

    Later,
