My first band was ARSENIC. Then I had a band called LEGALLY INSANE,
changed name (and Drummer) to AUREUS, then changed name (and drummer) again
to Room 213. We finnaly have a good drummer (we have had him for a year
    now, though)!

One of the adjectives in your first sentence describing the present
discussion is why Yngwie hasn't been included.

    > Can't we discuss his playing without ignoring his ego?

You mean discuss his playing without ADDRESSING his ego?

Howabout I let him describe himself? Here, I'll address each of your
subjects, but I'll Yngwie provide some of his own answers. These are
    direct quotes.

His playing - fast: "How does a classical pianist or violinist differ in
overall speed from what I do?"

His style - graceful: "Unlike a lot of other guitarists, I don't play
    rubbish."

His strength - omniscience: "I know basically all the music theory there
    is to know."

His weaknesses - envy, lust, wrath, pride, gluttony, and avarice. He's
immune to sloth, just listen to his albums.

decided to become an asshole on me and back out the day
after i ordered the tixs. if anyone needs a ticket, i will
be glad to let it go for the face value of 12.50. as i feel
it would suck to pass off the ticketcrapper charges of
almost 5 bucks a ticket to anyone. obviuosly it is of no use
to me since i have a ticket, and no-one sems to be into them

I bet you all can find it on the King Crimson website if you search hard enough.

Robert Fripp said something like this about bootlegging: there's something special about every concert. Now, if you try to can it, or tape it, for that matter, the aura just won't be there anymore. Ever wondered why the gig you just went to and what sounded so great sounds like shit when you see some clips on the TV or hear it on the radio? It's the aura thing. You can't capture the thought you're thinking in words in its entirety.

I agree with him exactly 50%. I leave the rest for my burning desire for bootlegs. Where're those Motley Crue, Faith No More, Dream Theater and Steve Vai bootlegs, I wonder? Some Cynic and Soundgarden wouldn't hurt either. :-)

The country where I come from is geographically and was until lately politically connected to the former Soviet Union, which many people have been referring to as Russia. I had a buttload of Russian friends, and although none of them, as far as I know, were named Portnoy, I know enough of Russian names as to claim Portnoy is a Russian name, or rather a Russian Jewish name, if you catch my drift. The infamous chessmaster Kortchnoy... You do know of him, don't you? And Derek... Most Armenian names end with an "ian". And take a look at the guy, too. There's no doubt. Gosh, the band is like "druzhba narodov", the friendship of nations, as praised in the Soviet time. I *love* it. :-)

    Gladly,

By saying this I mean that in terms of straight-forward notes and rhythms, ie not making weird sounds or bending harmonics with whammy and whateve. I'd love to see Vai or Satch do an improv solo without their whammy bar, because people often occuse them of using it as a "crutch". Would they be able to play well without it? I think they have enough licks in their vocabulary to do a good job, but live Vai always seems to jump back to it. Also, Johnson is by far the superior at covering wide intervals and the entire fretboard in single lines. This is because most people visualize the fretboard patterns available closest to wherever they are playing, but Johnson jumps around aimlessly and always seems to hit the note he's going for. Check out Camel's Night Out for some brilliant improv in this style.

Moderate, and be subtle at first. The way my friend got his girlfriend away from country music and into prog rock was to hide it in the background. This way, you'll not realize consciously for awhile, but eventually, you may catch yourself tapping your foot to it. Later on, you'll pick up on the words, and eventually find yourself droning along with it. You'll end up liking it whether you like it or not. :)

He used the same trick to get me into DT, too. I was really surprised the other day when I was playing Wait for Sleep (the old folks at the care center love this one) on the piano, and Jen (Matt's gf) started singin along with it. Heheh, this's a cool and unfair trick indeed. :)

Anytime I've tried to straightforwardly tell people, "Check this out!" They seem to not like it as well. Holding a gun to their head and saying "Enjoy or die!" doesn't fare well either. Some people prefer death to listening to different styles of music....

Anyway, try this, you may kill me if it doesn't work...

Also, just got my Dregs of the Internet CD today. Al I can say is: ROCK! Get it! I haven't really heard anyhing on here that I don't like (just about, there is one song I heard that I didn't but don't know the name, the songer sounds like me probably and I hate my voice).

This reminds me....I play drums and I used to be in a band called Blind Justice. We were playing at a sports bar out of our area, and when we got there, the sign said that tonight featured the Blind Jesters. :) Then, with all the noise, we told them the name, and they changed it to Blonde Jesters, so we spoke a little louder and had it corrected. :) Other bands were White Lightning (I was only 15, leave me alone), and Voodoo Child (cover trio).

Hey, kids. I'm trying to make it a regular habit of updating the Dream Theater FAQ twice a month, so there is a new version out as of a few mintues ago. Besides a couple of cosmetic changes (I stole the background from Mesa Boogie, but it looks so damned cool!), there is actually new information! Thanks to Mark "Itchy" Bredius, I have included information about the samples in "The Mirror."

Please check out the FAQ, and let me know if there's anything that's wrong, anything that should be there but isn't, or anything that is there but shouldn't be.

I'm not sure about Kevin Moore.... In I&W it seemed somewhat like a possibility that he was holding to something, but starting in Awake, and ESPECIALLY now in his demo's, it seems as if he's holding Religion (esp. Christianity/Catholicism) in quite a bit of contempt...

Awake --------- "Never been much of a doubting Thomas, but nothing breaks like a broken promise, You tell me 'bout your two-more coming, but once is just enough for me"

Demos ---------- "In the first place get that book out of my face, man, he never tried to call me anyway. Now hanging out with prophets ain't no crime, but I never search for nothing I can't find. Jesus had his own life, I got mine. Just call me hollow"

"Heaven is empty you'll find out it's a wonderful story staring."

    etc...

does anyone know if anything happened (besides his musical tastes changing- and thus leaving the band) to KM betweend I&W and Awake? There is a night/day difference in his outlook on everything between the two albums.... notes from Virginia Tech the desk of Computer EngIneering Jason Brindel & VT a cappella beamup@vt.edu (JUXTAPOSITION) www.vt.edu:10021/B/beamup www.vt.edu:10021/org/juxtap ------------------------------------------------- If there's a pensive fear, a wasted year A man must learn to cope.
