    Hi,

Does anyone have free space on his/her website ? This is why : I recorded 8
files from 8 different progressive metal bands (I recorded it straight from
CD, and encoded the .WAV file into a .RA (RealAudio 3.0) file). The files
are 530 K to 817 K in size, all recorded in Mono 11.025KHz.

The soundclips are from the following bands : Threshold, Eldritch, Damn The
Machine, The Gathering, World Trade, Altura, Lemur Voice and Superior.

I'd like to put them on my own website, but I only have 1 Mb of space. The
total space of the .RA files is about 5 Mb. I'm planning to do some more .RA
    files if anyone is interested.

Please reply per e-mail if you got some free space.

    See ya,

    Aurora

Hey. Ok. First I am as non-musicianish as they get, also female, and I really love and appreciate Dream Theater...I got to go to two J.P. clinics and was really overwhelmed, but learned a lot (chromatic scales, silk shirts, and ...Sega!) and had fun...I am left handed and therefore the right side of my brain is supposedly more dominant, and I learned a little about left brain and right brain and emotion/thought patterns in psych back at Alfred (go Alfred), and e-mail me if you care to discuss that.

I still regret that I missed the Awake release party last year at Muls. Just by a few hours too :( cause I was raised and lived in Wantagh for my life, just moved less than a year ago, but rarely get lost on Queens Blvd these days ;)

So I'll be back in Wantagh next week for the show and right across the street from Muls is the Lighthouse Diner, literally right across the street. If anyone wants to meet there before the show, that would be cool. Not sure which LIRR train I'll catch, so e-mail me if you're going and have ideas. It's debatable about being the best diner on L.I, but it is right there on Sunrise Highway.

Someone said in a previous jam that I think the GC stage dived into the crowd as a finale. Well, at work someone e-mailed me the following on why such an act would be really really stupid, unless you have the loyal fan base that Dream Theater has :) Personally I hope there aren't too many moshers and crowd surfers and such at these Dec. shows cause I want to enjoy the shows and hey "Just Let Me Breathe" <- especially BH ;) Ok:

REPORTING LIVE FROM THE "LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP" DEPARTMENT: German rock star GUNTHER DEITZ crashed to his death when peeved fans refused to catch him in a crowd-diving stunt. Heavy metal idol Deitz died instantly as he smashed into the concrete floor after yelling "Catch me!" He regularly stage-dived as a climax to his show, but fans - annoyed he'd turned up an hour late and then sacked his guitarist -stepped out of his way instead of catching him. As he hit the concrete, a roar went round the packed stadium in Hamburg, Germany. Fan EGOR PROSNECKI, 18, said, "He got what he deserved." Wow. Tough crowd*

(that was on the metaverse.com site or something)

Wow, I should really get to work now. /me is thankful for short work weeks! -Rachel

What do you mean by dry? I am just trying to understand. When someone has differing opinions from me I try to understand why. Maybe I am missing something that could change my opinion!!!!!

The material you are referring to has been released on many bootlegs. That piece came between Lifting Shadows and the Mirror on the Waking Up the World Tour. It is one of those rehearsed jams you were referring to.

Sorry for my ignorant statement. I never realized Yngwie ranked up there with Bach and Mozart. I could of saved a lot of money on classical guitar classes by just listening to my Yngwie records.

    >>ROFL

I know I am showing my ignorance here but what does ROFL mean?

Really my conclusion was based on a comparison with A440, not another guitarist. How could any musician be considered great or whatever when they can't tune their instrument?

Technique to what? Make myself look like a moron? Make myself look like a woman-hater? Make you look at me? Make you look at...you?

    > 1. State the obvious - men and women are different.

I can't speak slowly here. The rate of my communication is determined by your reading speed, which might be really fast. The best I can do to simplify my meaning is to point out lots of obvious things. For instance, you're reading letters right now.

    > 2. Attempt to define a "scientific" reason for these differences.

No, there was nothing scientific about why women don't shred. That was a purely philosophical opinion. This time around my bungling was rooted in psychology. Brushing alone won't keep your adjectives in shape.

    > 3. Translate this "scientific reason" into demonstrable proof of male > superiority.

Male superiority? Why do you assume resistance to feeling is superior to acceptance of feeling? More importantly, when did I state anything close to the idea that reason is more important than instinct? That isn't really possible. In all the things I've posted over xxx months, do you think I would have waited this long to slam women if I'd really hated them all this time? Why would I have wasted so much time holding conversations via e-mail with Airdance The Invisible or Babs The Giggling if I thought they were inferior?

    > 4. Provide a large, sweeping generalization (specifically banned by > Mr. Bahr) as an example of this proof.

Of course. It's what fucking idiots do best.

    > 5. Anticipate negative feedback using an popular straw-man technique > - Nazi symbolism.

There was no straw-man technique last time, I just asked people not to go ballistic. I quote things all the time, yet few people ever actually respond to such quotes. Which doesn't exactly fit in with the present moment.

    > When bestowed this high honor, Mr. Bafu Vai still remained clueless as > to what he may have said that could have been construed as even the > slightest bit offensive to even the most sensitive member of the > opposite sex.

Joe, there's a number of things I could say here, and I can only yank my own reins for so long before I end up blurting out the immense respect I have for your creativity and innovation. Remind me never to go to the Grand Canyon when I'm trying to hide from you.

    > "Sensitive" males all across the list chuckled profusely at the oafish > naivety of Mr. Vai.

Lifestyles ought not be imprisoned in quotations. If jesters were truly fools, no one would pay them heed.

*I agree about what kind of music people are exposed to. I know of very few women who listen to music that isn't mainstream pop culture. However, they are often impressed with some of my favorite music. Part of this has to do with how people select music that they like. I have noticed that some music I can take an instant liking to (Dream Theater, King Crimson, Tori Amos) and some music takes some exposure (Marillion, Classical, Bela Fleck). I grew up listening to classical and classic rock that my dad played, but it's been only recently that I have been able to appreciate it. The great thing about the internet is that exposure is easy to get; maybe we'll se a rebirth of 'underground' music or music that has trouble getting a break with a major record company. *It's been ages since I've posted here. I've been pretty busy with school and stuff. I recently attended one of the best concerts I have ever seen. In a cramped music store, I watched from five feet away as *Greg Howard* showed off his talents on the Chapman Stick. This guy is awesome. After he played for about an hour, I tried out his own Stick, a recent one made of rosewood. My brother and I talked to him for about 45 minutes after the show; he's a really neat guy. If you get the chance to see him, it's worth the trip. *If anyone here is selliong or knows someone who is selling a Stick for less than $1000, hook me up!

This is partially true, but it also needs to be remembered that Steve Harris wrote the majority of Maiden's material. Dickinson is more widely read in literature, while Harris is more knowledgeable in religion and history. This is why songs like "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" were written partly by Dickinson, while stuff like "Number of the Beast" and "The Trooper" were done solely by Harris.

Hi all, I'm a newbie! My name is Bruce and I live in Reading, PA. I'll see you all in Birch Hill. I was there last year for the sardine concert, but I won't pass up any opportunity to see DT again.

I would like to say one thing about Mike and other DT'ers reading the posts. I know for the most part that Mike does read most posts. When I was stupid and on AOL, he left messages occasionally through his sisters account and he would jump in sometimes to clear up stupid things that were being said. I also know that Derek stopped by once or twice and I even remember Myung said HI!

But Mike did say he daily read the posts. As for the other guys or management, I have no idea. But hey, were all family here so let's have some fun and wait patiently for the new CD (which I did hear was supposed to be a double --- please, please!!!!).

Talk to you later and see at Birch Hill. I'll be the one stuck between the short red head guy and the skinny darked haired guy jumping up and down.

Hey all, First of all, as a guitar player of 19 years now, John Petrucci *is* my favorite guitarist at the time. His phrasing, tone, technical ability, AND emotion are probably what most attracts my ears to his playing. He *is* a complete player. People in general tend to judge a guitarist only by his ability to play solos instead of his ability to play rhythms, solos, have good timing, good tone, and showmanship. Personally, I think that some of JP's rhythms are more difficult than his solos. More importantly, they are rich and textured, adding much to overall quality of the song. The same goes for his soloing. He just doesn't practice his scales to some background music (which is an easy habit to get into). He jumps around and tries different things. He isn't the extremes of Yngwie Malmsteen on speed or David Gilmour on ludes. He uses all of his tools to get the job done and to convey the emotion that he is feeling at the time. During the writing process, the first time I hear the rhythm, I improvise the solo based on how I'm feeling. The next time I play it, most of the basic melody remains the same but I might play some parts a little different. Cleaning things up a little but it still is all the emotion that I'm feeling. So, yes, maybe the solo has been practiced (to a certain extent), but it still is emotion. I think that JP does it very much the same. When he plays the solos live, you are expecting them to sound a certain way. He still plays them that way, but with some nuances that reflect his current emotional state. You don't play in Dream Theater if you don't have good timing. Just imagine what Metropolis would sound like if he/they couldn't keep time. There is more to it than knowing the chords and notes. JP plays through the best amps in the world! How can he *not* have excellent tone?? Mesa Boogie rules! Some people may say that JP isn't a great showman. I tend to disagree. He looks like he's having a good time enjoying what he does and appears to be doing it effortlessly. So what? He doesn't play with his teeth or behind his back (old, easy, way overrated), he doesn't throw the guitar around his body (ala Yngwie, Steve Vai), or any of those other cheesy tricks. He *does*: look at the audience and interface with them, move around and not stand there like a statue, smiles, bangs his head, has a good time, and plays the living fuck out of his instrument!!! Well, that's my point of view on John Petrucci! On another note, for you Baltimore/York/Harrisburg jammers, on Friday Nov. 29, 1996 (this Friday), Dio along with Motorhead (remember them?), and Baltimore own progressive metal kings Mystic Force will be playing at the Paradox nightclub in York, PA. I believe it is somewhere off of RT. 30. The phone number for the place is (717) 843-0966. This will be MF's first outing in the area with their new singer. I hear he's a kind of like a cross between Geoff Tate and John Arch with some of the roughness of Dio (or Awake era JLB). Their last singer was really good, I don't expect anything less. Enough for now, see y'all later. Rick Pierpont
